The sky lovingly smiles on the earth and her children. ~ Henry Morton Stanley
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Morton Stanley
The more experience and insight I obtain into human nature, the more convinced do I become that the greater portion of a man is purely animal. ~ Henry Morton Stanley
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Morton Stanley
Granted that I know little of my real self, still, I am the best evidence for myself. And though, when I have quitted this world, it will matter nothing to me what people say of me, up to the moment of death we should strive to leave behind us something which can either Comfort, Amuse, Instruct, or Benefit the living; and though I cannot do either, execpt in a small degree, even that little should be given. ~ Henry Morton Stanley
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Morton Stanley
But my estimates, for instance, based upon book information, were simply ridiculous, fanciful images of African attractions were soon dissipated, anticipated pleasures vanished, and all crude ideas began to resolve themselves into shape. ~ Henry Morton Stanley
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Morton Stanley
An insuperable obstacle to rapid transit in Africa is the want of carriers, and as speed was the main object of the Expedition under my command, my duty was to lessen this difficulty as much as possible. ~ Henry Morton Stanley
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Morton Stanley
Dr. David Livingstone left the Island of Zanzibar in March, 1866. ~ Henry Morton Stanley
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Morton Stanley
Religion acts as a moral gardener, to weed out, or suppress, evil tendencies, which, like weeds and nettles, would shoot up spontaneously in the wonderful compost of the garden, if unwatched. ~ Henry Morton Stanley
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Morton Stanley
Stanley must have realized that this postponement would probably be fatal. But while he did not give up, he never for a moment thought of abandoning his African quest [...] Yet Stanley still longed for the security of marriage, and hoped he could find Livingstone and marry Katie. [...] The romantic side of his nature told him that their story ought to end in marriage: the workhouse boy, having distinguished himself beyond all expectations, weds the daughter of the respectable local gentleman, and they live happily ever afterwards in a big house
[...] But Katie had never understood his inner conviction of being chosen for a great task. ~ Tim Jeal
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Tim Jeal
Socialism is a return to primitive conditions. ~ Henry Morton Stanley
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Morton Stanley
He [Stanley] had stated that he longed to do something wonderful for the African tribes along the Congo, and instead, as would become all too apparent, had set them up for a terrible fate. In 1877 he came down the great river as the first European ever to do so, declaring his hope that the Congo should become like `a torch to those who sought to do good'." Instead, it became the torch that attracted the archexploiter King Leopold II of Belgium. ~ Tim Jeal
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Tim Jeal
Sir Thomas More, son of Sir John More, a justice of the King's Bench, was born in 1478, in Milk Street, in the city of London. After his earlier education at St. Anthony's School, in Threadneedle Street, he was placed, as a boy, in the household of Cardinal John Morton, Archbishop of Canterbury and Lord Chancellor. It was not unusual for persons of wealth or influence and sons of good families to be so established together in a relation of patron and client. The youth wore his patron's livery, and added to his state. The patron used, afterwards, his wealth or influence in helping his young client forward in the world. Cardinal Morton had been in earlier days that Bishop of Ely whom Richard III. sent to the Tower; was busy afterwards in hostility to Richard; and was a chief adviser of Henry VII., who in 1486 made him Archbishop of Canterbury, and nine months afterwards Lord Chancellor. Cardinal Morton - of talk at whose table there are recollections in "Utopia" - delighted in the quick wit of young Thomas More. He once said, "Whoever shall live to try it, shall see this child here waiting at table prove a notable and rare man. ~ Thomas More
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Thomas More
You will all be assailed, my dear friends, by the very real temptation to believe that you have been forsaken by God – that your priesthood is in vain, and that the weight of mortal grief and sin is more than you can bear. In the midst of your anguish you will ask of Him a sign, some visible ray of His unchanging light in a world of hideous darkness. I am sorry to say that this visible sign will rarely be given. The burning bush of Moses, the jewel-encrusted dove of Theresa, the Tolle lege of Augustine – these are no longer the style, as in the simpler days of saint and prophet. The light will be interior; you must look for it within ~ Henry Morton Robinson
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Morton Robinson
You will go far in the Church."
"I have no desire to go far. My only ambition is to be a good priest."
"You will be that, of course. Nevertheless, you will go higher. And do you know why?"
"Why?"
"Because," said Orselli, "you are not afraid of worldliness. I do not mean that you are worldly. Far from it. But you have a talent for being all things to all men. ~ Henry Morton Robinson
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Morton Robinson
Behind everything in London is something else, and, behind that, is something else still; and so on through the centuries, so that London as we see her is only the latest manifestation of other Londons, and to lover her is to plunge into ancestor-worship. ~ Henry Vollam Morton
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Vollam Morton
There are millions receiving government payments who have come to consider them as an earned right, who of course find them inadequate, and who are outraged at the slightest suggestion of a critical re-examination of the subject. The political pressure for constant extension and increase of these benefits is almost irresistible. ~ Henry Hazlitt
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Hazlitt
The man who joins with youths stays young in heart and mind. In exchange for the gift of their vitality and eagerness, the mature of man can give guidance and trust, a sympathetic ear and helping hand. ~ Henry Clausen
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Clausen
You need not rest your reputation on the dinners you give. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry David Thoreau
I would not run round a corner to see the world blow up. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry David Thoreau
I will not go so far as to say, with a living poet, that the world knows nothing of its greatest men; but there are forms of greatness, or at least of excellence, which "die and make no sign"; there are martyrs that miss the palm, but not the stake; heroes without the laurel, and conquerors without the triumph. ~ George Augustus Henry Sala
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by George Augustus Henry Sala
Being born in a Christian home does not make you a Christian. ~ E. Stanley Jones
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by E. Stanley Jones
Asking doesn't mean you lack wisdom - it's evidence of wisdom. ~ Andy Stanley
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Andy Stanley
Exaggeration! was ever any virtue attributed to a man without exaggeration? was ever any vice, without infinite exaggeration? Do we not exaggerate ourselves to ourselves, or do we recognize ourselves for the actual men we are? Are we not all great men? Yet what are we actually, to speak of? We live by exaggeration. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry David Thoreau
For good reasons, there are no ties during the Stanley Cup season. Somebody needs to win so the lads can get out to their cottages on the lakes, where all hockey players spend their summers, or so I have been told. ~ George Vecsey
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by George Vecsey
Facts are rarely self-explanatory; their significance, analysis, and interpretation - at least in the foreign policy world - depend on context and relevance. ~ Henry Kissinger
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Kissinger
And in despair I bowed my head; "There is no peace on earth," I said; "For hate is strong, And mocks the song Of peace on earth, good-will to men!" Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: "God is not dead, nor doth he sleep! The Wrong shall fail, the Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men! ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
The artist and his work are not to be separated. The most willfully foolish man cannot stand aloof from his folly, but the deed and the doer together make ever one sober fact. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry David Thoreau
The nineteenth-century clergyman William Barnes preferred wheelsaddle to bicycle and folkwain to omnibus. By the same token forceps would be nipperlings, and pathology would be painlore. Some of his new words recalled the language of Old English poetry: he proposed glee-mote in place of concert, and the wonderful cellar-thane instead of butler. ~ Henry Hitchings
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Hitchings
What is called politics is comparatively something so superficial and inhuman, that practically I have never fairly recognized that it concerns me at all. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry David Thoreau
When they talk of ghosts of the dead who wander in the night with things still undone in life, they approximate my subjective experience of this life. ~ Jack Henry Abbott
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Jack Henry Abbott

Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Oscar Wilde
You know if the U.S. Government wanted to boost the economy there's a simple solution make Black Friday the refund date for your state and federal taxes ~ Stanley Victor Paskavich
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Stanley Victor Paskavich
The Government is a servant and never should be anything but a servant. The moment the people become adjuncts to government, then the law of retribution begins to work, for such a relation is unnatural, immoral, and inhuman. ~ Henry Ford
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Ford
Customer is a very important key factor that every establishment big or small MUST recognize in other to succeed. ~ Abdulazeez Henry Musa
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Abdulazeez Henry Musa
Men go to a fire for entertainment. When I see how eagerly men will run to a fire, whether in warm or in cold weather, by day or by night, dragging an engine at their heels, I'm astonished to perceive how good a purpose the level of excitement is made to serve. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry David Thoreau
the sudden hour that had transformed his life, the hour of his perceiving with a mute inward gasp akin to the low moan of apprehensive passion that a world was left him to conquer and that he might conquer it if he tried. It ~ Henry James
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry James

Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Harper Lee

Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry A. Kissinger
We are not quite sure that the Sermon on the Mount is the Sermon for the mart. We are not
sure, and an unsure place is an unsafe place*
We must go on or go back. We must be more
Christian or less. ~ E. Stanley Jones
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by E. Stanley Jones
For River to discover himself in Rimbaud's life and Miller's prose was simultaneously self-aggrandizing and self-pitying. Tellingly, he was more interested in Miller's book than in Rimbaud's actual writing: he responded to Rimbaud not as a poet, but as a symbol. ~ Gavin Edwards
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Gavin Edwards
My life is like the summer rose
That opens to the morning sky,
But ere the shades of evening close
Is scattered on the ground - to die. ~ Richard Henry Wilde
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Richard Henry Wilde

Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Spencer
God is to me that creative force, behind and in the universe, who manifests Himself as energy, as life, as order, as beauty, as thought, as conscience, as love. ~ Henry Sloane Coffin

You sit at the board and suddenly your heart leaps. Your hand trembles to pick up the piece and move it. But what chess teaches you is that you must sit there calmly and think about whether it's really a good idea and whether there are other, better ideas. ~ Stanley Kubrick
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Stanley Kubrick
Nothing marks the change from the city to the country so much as the absence of grinding noises. The country is never silent. But its sounds are separate, distinct, and as it were, articulate. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
No man in America has ever stood up so persistently and effectively for the dignity of human nature, knowing himself for a man, and the equal of any and all governments. In that sense he was the most American of us all. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Henry David Thoreau
My contributions were many: First clown director, with witty sayings and flashily dressed, now called master of ceremonies. ~ Jelly Roll Morton
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Jelly Roll Morton
If I fall asleep, it is because I am overloaded. I sleep because one hour with Henry contains five years of my life, and one phrase, one caress answers the expectations of a hundred nights. When I hear him laugh, I say, "I have heard Rabelais.". And I swallow his laughter like bread and wine. ~ Anais Nin
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Anais Nin
I do suffer from an associative malady that permits me to justify acquiring almost every book. ~ Henry Hitchens (Browse)

Henry held up his taco- formerly Vlad's- and grinned. " Little known fact, gentlemen. Tacos are the food of genius."
pg248 Henry to Vlad & Joss ~ Heather Brewer
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Heather Brewer
Until we are sure, until we settle the issue of forgiveness once and for all, two things will always be true. First, we will never have much confidence when we petition our heavenly Father. We will always feel that God is holding something against us. Second, we will put others on the same scale we put ourselves on. Since we are always trying to do something to ensure our forgiveness, we will subconsciously pressure others to perform to gain our forgiveness. We will have a tendency to remind others of their failures and their need to make up for them in some way. ~ Charles F. Stanley
Henry Morton Stanley quotes by Charles F. Stanley
