Then Chameroy spoke. 'You always put the blame on opium, but as I see it the case of Freneuse is much more complicated. Him, an invalid? No - a character from the tales of Hoffmann! Have you never taken the trouble to look at him carefully? That pallor of decay; the twitching of his bony hands, more Japanese than chrysanthemums; the arabesque profile; that vampiric emaciation - has all of that never given you cause to reflect? In spite of his supple body and his callow face Freneuse is a hundred thousand years old. That man has lived before, in ancient times under the reigns of Heliogabalus, Alexander IV and the last of the Valois. What am I saying? That man is Henri III himself. I have in my library an edition of Ronsard - a rare edition, bound in pigskin with metal trimmings - which contains a portrait of Henri engraved on vellum. One of these nights I will bring the volume here to show you, and you may judge for yourselves. Apart from the ruff, the doublet and the earrings, you would believe that you were looking at the Due de Freneuse. As far as I'm concerned, his presence here inevitably makes me ill - and so long as he is present, there is such an oppression, such a heaviness... ~ Jean Lorrain
Henri Iii quotes by Jean Lorrain
Listening is much more than allowing another to talk while waiting for a chance to respond. Listening is paying full attention to others and welcoming them into our very beings. The beauty of listening is that those who are listened to start feeling accepted, start taking our words more seriously and discovering their true selves. ~ Henri Nouwen
Henri Iii quotes by Henri Nouwen
Let us be French as the Americans are English. ~ Henri Bourassa
Henri Iii quotes by Henri Bourassa
In solitude I get rid of my scaffolding ...
Solitude molds self-righteous people into gentle, caring, forgiving persons who are so deeply convinced of their own great sinfulness and so fully aware of God's even greater mercy that their life itself becomes ministry. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen
Henri Iii quotes by Henri J.M. Nouwen
Photography is a way of shouting, of freeing oneself, not of proving or asserting one's own originality. It's a way of life. ~ Henri Cartier-Bresson
Henri Iii quotes by Henri Cartier-Bresson
Only learn with reservations. An entire life is not enough to unlearn what you naively, submissively, have allowed to be placed in your head---innocent one---without imagiging the consequences. ~ Henri Michaux
Henri Iii quotes by Henri Michaux
Sometimes also he would cast in such wicked thoughts as these; that I must pray to him, or for him: I have thought sometimes of that, Fall down; or, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Matt. iii. 9. ~ John Bunyan
Henri Iii quotes by John Bunyan
Women mostly remember the men who made them laugh, and men - only the women who made them cry. ~ Henri De Regnier
Henri Iii quotes by Henri De Regnier
But, did the Divinity [of Christ] suffer? [ ... ] The holy fathers explained this point through the aforementioned clear example of the red-hot iron, it is the analogy equated for the Divine Nature which became united with the human nature. They explained that when the blacksmith strikes the red-hot iron, the hammer is actually striking both the iron and the fire united with it. The iron alone bends (suffers) whilst the fire is untouched though it bends with the iron. ~ Pope Shenouda III Of Alexandria
Henri Iii quotes by Pope Shenouda III Of Alexandria
It is in this solitude that we discover that being is more important than having, and that we are worth more than the result of our efforts. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen
Henri Iii quotes by Henri J.M. Nouwen
When I did show up next door, at 6:34, it sounded like World War III had erupted in the house. I'd let myself in since no one answered the damn door.
"I can't believe you ate all the ice cream, Daemon!"
I cringed and stopped inside the dining room. There was no way I was going into that kitchen.
"I didn't eat all of it."
"Oh, so it ate itself?" Dee shrieked so loudly I thought I heard the rafters in the ceiling shake. "Did the spoon eat it? Oh wait, I know. The carton ate it."
"Actually, I think the freezer ate it," Daemon responded dryly.
I grinned when I heard what sounded like the empty container hitting what suspiciously sounded like flesh. ~ Jennifer L. Armentrout
Henri Iii quotes by Jennifer L. Armentrout
If there is one vegetable which is God-given, it is the haricot bean. ~ Jean-Henri Fabre
Henri Iii quotes by Jean-Henri Fabre
At bottom there is but one subject of study: the forms and metamorphoses of mind. All other subjects may be reduced to that; all other studies bring us back to this study. ~ Henri Frederic Amiel
Henri Iii quotes by Henri Frederic Amiel
There is within you a lamb and a lion. Spiritual maturity is the ability to let lamb and lion lie down together. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen
Henri Iii quotes by Henri J.M. Nouwen
I truly believe the art's larger than the artist. Who cares about John Steinbeck? I care about the Joad family. ~ Andre Dubus III
Henri Iii quotes by Andre Dubus III

Henri Iii quotes by Sharon Kay Penman

it may be outraged by silence. ~ Henri Frederic Amiel

What Exile from himself can flee?[a] To zones though more and more remote, Still, still pursues, where'er I be, The blight of Life - the Demon Thought.[b] [a] [Compare Horace, Odes, II. xvi. 19, 20. [b] Compare Prior's Solomon, bk. iii. lines 85, 86: 'In the remotest wood and lonely grot Certain to meet that worst of evils - thought.' ~ George Gordon Byron
Henri Iii quotes by George Gordon Byron
There are men who, at the bottom of the ladder, battle to rise; they study, struggle, keep their wits alive and eventually get up to a place where they are received as an equal among respectable intellectuals. Here they find warmth and comfort for their pride, and here the struggle ends, and a death of many years commences. They could have gone on living. ~ Robert Henri
Henri Iii quotes by Robert Henri
The most vital things in the look of a landscape endure only for a moment. Work should be done from memory; memory of that vital moment. ~ Robert Henri
Henri Iii quotes by Robert Henri
It seems dangerous to be a portrait artist who does commissions for clients because everyone wants to be flattered, so they pose in such a way that there's nothing left of truth. ~ Henri Cartier-Bresson
Henri Iii quotes by Henri Cartier-Bresson
The growth and development of the soul is more important than power and glory. ~ Henri Frederic Amiel

Henri Iii quotes by Henri Cartier-Bresson
I have never taken a photograph without one thought in my head to amuse myself. ~ Jacques-Henri Lartigue
Henri Iii quotes by Jacques-Henri Lartigue
It was a powerful thing, that laugh. He only did it once, but his eyes remained shaped like it. Something inside her did a complicated tug. Oh no! she thought. But then she calmed herself. Richard C. Gansey III has a nice mouth. Now I know he has nice eyes when he ~ Maggie Stiefvater
Henri Iii quotes by Maggie Stiefvater
Accepting that we have weaknesses becomes a strength. ~ Joseph M. Marshall III
Henri Iii quotes by Joseph M. Marshall III
But Karl Menninger did not accept any of these answers as the right one. His answer was "diagnosis." The first and most important task of any healer is making the right diagnosis. Without an accurate diagnosis, subsequent treatment has little effect. Or, to say it better, diagnosis is the beginning of treatment. For Karl Menninger, speaking to a group of future psychiatrists, this obviously meant that the most attention should be paid to learning the diagnostic skills of the profession. But when we take the word diagnosis in its most original and profound meaning of knowing through and through (gnosis = knowledge; dia = through and through), we can see that the first and most important aspect of all healing is an interested effort to know the patients fully, in all their joys and pains, pleasures and sorrows, ups and downs, highs and lows, which have given shape and form to their life and have led them through the years to their present situation. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen
Henri Iii quotes by Henri J.M. Nouwen
When we give generously, with an abundance mentality, what we give away will multiply. ~ Henri Nouwen
Henri Iii quotes by Henri Nouwen
The wrought-iron gate squeaked as Lucas opened it. He lowered the rented bike down the stone steps and onto the sidewalk. To his right was the most famous Globe Hotel in Paris, disguised under another name. In front of the entrance five Curukians sat on mopeds. Lu-cas and his eighteen-month-old friend then shot out across the street and through the invisible beam of an-other security camera.
He rode diagonally across the place de la Concorde and headed toward the river. It seemed only natural. The motorcycles trailed him. He pedaled fast across the Alex-andre III bridge and zipped past Les Invalides hospital. He tried to turn left at the Rodin Museum, but Goper rode next to him, blocking his escape. ~ Paul Aertker
Henri Iii quotes by Paul Aertker
If there was a simple formula for success and it was easy to follow, everyone would be doing it. ~ Edward Johnson, III
Henri Iii quotes by Edward Johnson, III

Henri Iii quotes by Henri Bergson
To drive out the darkness, bring in the light. ~ Henri Bergson
Henri Iii quotes by Henri Bergson
Art when really understood is the province of every human being. It is simply a question of doing things, anything, well. It is not an outside, extra thing. ~ Robert Henri
Henri Iii quotes by Robert Henri
Benedict Arnold was appointed to the rank of general in the Continental Army by George Washington during the American War of Independence. It was up to him to protect the fortifications at West Point, New York, which in 1802 became the U.S. Military Academy. Arnold however planned to surrender his command to the British forces. When his treasonous act was discovered Arnold fled down the Hudson River to the British sloop-of-war Vulture, avoiding capture by the forces of George Washington, who had previously been alerted to the plot. Arnold was hailed a hero by the British, who gave him a commission in the British Army as brigadier general. In the winter of 1782, after the war, he moved to London with his wife where he was received as a hero by King George III. In the United States his name "Benedict Arnold" became synonyms for the words "TRAITOR & TREASON."
Cohorting with a foreign power to overthrow the government or purposely aiding the enemy is an act of Treason! ~ Hank Bracker
Henri Iii quotes by Hank Bracker
Everything which is, is thought, but not conscious and individual thought. The human intelligence is but the consciousness of being. It is what I have formulated before: Everything is a symbol of a symbol, and a symbol of what? of mind. ~ Henri Frederic Amiel
Henri Iii quotes by Henri Frederic Amiel

The splendors of earth do not simply lie in their roles as human resources, supports of culture, or stimulators of experience. ~ Holmes Rolston III
Henri Iii quotes by Holmes Rolston III
Every time I take a step in the direction of generosity, I know that I am moving from fear to love. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen
Henri Iii quotes by Henri J.M. Nouwen
Hospitality is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place. It is not to bring men and women over to our side, but to offer freedom not disturbed by dividing lines. It is not to lead our neighbor into a corner where there are no alternatives left, but to open a wide spectrum of options for choice and commitment. It is not an educated intimidation with good books, good stories, and good works, but the liberation of fearful hearts so that words can find roots and bear ample fruit ... .The paradox of hospitality is that it wants to create emptiness, not a fearful emptiness, but a friendly emptiness where strangers can enter and discover themselves as created free ... .not a subtle invitation to adopt the life style of the host, but the gift of a chance for the guest to find his own. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen
Henri Iii quotes by Henri J.M. Nouwen
In just the same way the thousands of successive positions of a runner are contracted into one sole symbolic attitude, which our eye perceives, which art reproduces, and which becomes for everyone the image of a man who runs. ~ Henri Bergson
Henri Iii quotes by Henri Bergson
