Numeracy: 1. The art of putting numbers to things, that is, assigning amounts to variables in order that practical decisions may be reach. 2. That aspect of education (beyond mere literacy) which takes account of quantitative aspects of reality. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
A finite world can support only a finite population; therefore, population growth must eventually equal zero. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
In the specific case of abortion, the matter is particularly easy in that no woman wants a late abortion. Once abortion was made legal, the age of the aborted fetus went down. The slope slipped in the other direction. If we legalize RU-486 and other similar new drugs, the age will fall to one week or less and start approaching zero. The slippery slope will slide in the other direction. The only reason we have late abortions is because we make early abortion difficult. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
You'll never know everything about the person you've chosen to marry. But the more information you have before entering into this commitment, the less chance you will be confronted with unfulfillable expectations. ~ Jerry Hardin
Hardin quotes by Jerry Hardin
We see only what we have names for. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
The rational man finds that his share of the cost of the wastes he discharges into the commons is less than the cost of purifying his wastes before releasing them. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
The morality of an act is a function of the state of the system at the time it is performed. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
I have decided that the hot, burning, inescapable pain is the worst. This pain comes when you finally begin to relax, you finally breathe, thinking that some issue is yesterday's problem, when in fact it's today's problem, tomorrow's problem, and the problem of every day after that. This pain comes when you pour everything into something, into someone, and they betray you so completely - so seemingly on a whim - that the pain crushes you and you feel as if you're barely breathing, barely holding on to that small fraction of whatever is left inside of you begging you to go on, to not give up.
-Tessa ~ Anna Todd
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd
You aren't my type, just the way that I am not yours. But that's why we are good for each other - we are so different, yet we're the same. You told me once that I bring out the worst in you. Well, you bring out the best in me. I know you feel it, too, Tessa. And yes, I didn't date, until you. You make me want to date, you make me want to be better. I want you to think I am worthy of you; I want you to want me the way I do you. I want to fight with you, even scream at each other until one of us admits we are wrong. I want to make you laugh, and listen to you ramble about classic novels. I just . . . I need you. I know I am cruel at times . . . well, all the time, but that's only because I don't know how else to be." His voice becomes a half whisper, his eyes wild. "This has been me for so long, I have never wanted to be any other way. Until now, until you." - Hardin ~ Anna Todd
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd
Freedom in a commons brings ruin to all. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
Let's go inside. The trees are swaying back and forth. I think that is my cue I've had way too much to drink. ~ Anna Todd
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd
Never give up, Never surrender!!!!!
If you think you can't, then you must, if you must, then you can..Tony Robbins ~ Paula V. Hardin
Hardin quotes by Paula V. Hardin
Hardin, as he sat at the foot of the table, speculated idly as to just what it was that made physical scientists such poor administrators. It might be merely that they were too used to inflexible fact and far too unused to pliable people. ~ Isaac Asimov
Hardin quotes by Isaac Asimov
The mathematics of biological reproduction is logically identical with the mathematics of usury. Money earns interest, animals have babies. In ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
The only kind of coercion I recommend is mutual coercion, mutually agreed upon by the majority of the people affected. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
It takes five years for a willing person's mind to change. Have patience with yourself and others when treading in an area protected by a taboo. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
Just please stay. I am begging you and I don't beg, Theresa. ~ Anna Todd

Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
It'll be an unholy muddle, that's for sure," he was saying. "Me and Hardin and Baker all with our claws out for the same seat. The thing will have to be done carefully or we'll end up with out tidy little Whig house divided."
"Why don't you take turns?"
"It's worth thinking about, but no matter how much you'd like politics to be a cotillion it just naturally wants to be a dirt fight. ~ Stephen Harrigan
Hardin quotes by Stephen Harrigan
I wanted to be a psychological engineer, but we lacked the facilities, so I did the next best thing - I went into politics. It's practically the same thing. ~ Isaac Asimov
Hardin quotes by Isaac Asimov
Of course, a positive growth rate might be taken as evidence that a population is below its optimum. ~ Garrett Hardin

- Hardin ~ Anna Todd (Author Of After)
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd (Author Of After)
An attack on values is inevitably seen as an act of subversion. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
Life is not about hoarding wealth but about spreading it around. God can act to see to it that the creation is nourished, but he uses us humans to see to it that our fellow humans have their needs met. We live in a world where the poor are daily reminders that we too have an obligation to meet, not only to ourselves but also to one another. In order to do this we, like Jesus, need to eschew three things: comfort, safety and security. ~ Michael Hardin
Hardin quotes by Michael Hardin
Even more interesting is that with all these millions of "fortuitous" colors, it appears that particularity is so rampant that any object we identify as, say, "blue" shares almost nothing in common with any other object we might identify as the same color. We tend to
think that color operates like crayons. We use one crayon to fill in a tree, a bird, jacket, and a roof. But it appears that the same color can be served by very different microstructures. For example, what we see as simple blue can be produced by incandescnce, transitions, vibrations, refraction, scattering, diffraction, etc. As Hardin points out, the "same blue" found in the sky, water, a rainbow, a beetle, a sapphire, the star Sirius, and a television dot results from very different microstructures. This may be a tough swallow for some Platonists who hope for a uniform basis for each color, but it should be a joy for those who seek to honor our God of the details. Like the true particularity of the persons of the Trinity, creation boasts in real individuality too. ~ Douglas M. Jones III
Hardin quotes by Douglas M. Jones III
I do believe everyone on this earth is an artist - some people more than others. But I do believe we are all artists in a certain way. We all have unique abilities. There are people who are meant to make it their life, and that is a different kind of person who would choose to be on that path. ~ Melora Hardin
Hardin quotes by Melora Hardin
A coldly rationalist individualist can deny that he has any obligation to make sacrifices for the future. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
Shock therapy has arguably created a large block of politicized people ready to vote for someone, perhaps a militarist, a quasifascist, or an old-style Communist, to undo the transitional order that has harmed them. ~ Russell Hardin
Hardin quotes by Russell Hardin
If you ever find someone who truly and consistently cares about what happens to you, someone who loves you unconditionally, someone who would take a bullet for you without giving it a second thought, then you need to cling to that person like paint on a wall. It's very unlikely you'll ever run across anyone like that again. ~ Jude Hardin
Hardin quotes by Jude Hardin
I feel like I have an amazing support team, between my husband and my nanny and my parents, who are very involved with my kids. I also have an incredible creative team with my manager, agent and publicist. ~ Melora Hardin
Hardin quotes by Melora Hardin
I would say I grew up listening a lot to Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland and Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. I grew up listening to those because my parents were kind of into folk music. ~ Melora Hardin
Hardin quotes by Melora Hardin
Indeed, our particular concept of private property, which deters us from exhausting the positive resources of the earth, favors pollution. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
A bullet to the front of the head demonstrates good marksmanship. A bullet to the back of the head demonstrates good judgement. ~ John Wesley Hardin
Hardin quotes by John Wesley Hardin
Sometimes I just want to drown out the world around me, and music and reading are the only things that do that for me. ~ Anna Todd
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd
Fundamentalists are panicked by the apparent disintegration of the family, the disappearance of certainty and the decay of morality. Fear leads them to ask, if we cannot trust the Bible, what can we trust? ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
Economists (and others) who are satisfied with nature-free equations develop a dangerous hubris about the potency of our species ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
I think back to what Landon said about heartbreak, that if you don't love the person, they can't break your heart. Hardin repeatedly breaks my heart, even when I don't think there are any more pieces to break.
And I love him. I love Hardin. ~ Anna Todd
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd
Throughout history, human exploitation of the earth has produced this progression: colonize-destroy-move on. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
I didn't know there could be someone like Tessa. I had no clue that this obnoxious blonde was walking around waiting to turn my entire life upside down by driving me absolutely insane and making me love her more than I love breathing. ~ Anna Todd
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd
Those who nod sagely and quote the tragedy of the commons in relation to environmental problems from pollution of the atmosphere to poaching of national parks tend to forget that Garrett Hardin revised his conclusions many times over thirty years. He recognized, most importantly, that anarchy did not prevail on the common pastures of midieval England in the way he had described [in his 1968 essay in 'Science']. The commoners--usually a limited number of people with defined rights in law--organized themselves to ensure it did not. The pastures were protected from ruin by the tradition of 'stinting,' which limited each herdsman to a fixed number of animals. 'A managed commons, though it may have other defects, is not automatically subject to the tragic fate of the unmanaged commons,' wrote Hardin, though he was still clearly unhappy with commoning arrangements. As with all forms of socialism, of which he regarded commoning as an early kind, Hardin said the flaw in the system lay in the quality of the management. The problem was alays how to prevent the managers from furthering their own interests. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Who guards the guardians?

Hardin observed, crucially, that a successful managed common depended on limiting the numbers of commoners, limiting access, and having penalties that deterred.

None of Hardin's requirements for a successfully managed common is fulfilled by high-seas fishery regimes ~ Charles Clover
Hardin quotes by Charles Clover
We change and we discover who we really are." – Noah ~ Anna Todd (Author Of After)
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd (Author Of After)

Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
In a finite world this means that the per capita share of the world's goods must steadily decrease. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
You... You make me want to be good, for you... ~ Anna Todd
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd

Hardin quotes by J. West Hardin
The only thing we can really count on in this uncertain world is human unreliability itself. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
Using the commons as a cesspool does not harm the general public under frontier conditions, because there is no public, the same behavior in a metropolis is unbearable. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
Lucy stood on her tiptoes and kissed John Hardin on the cheek and pulled him tightly against her. She put his forehead against hers and smiled at him until he blushed. Then, Lucy stepped back, looked at the coffin, and played to the crowd. Who gave my secret away It's just what I always wanted and I can't wait to try it on ~ Pat Conroy
Hardin quotes by Pat Conroy
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights describes the family as the natural and fundamental unit of society. It follows that any choice and decision with regard to the size of the family must irrevocably rest with the family itself, and cannot be made by anyone else. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
Moreover, the practical recommendations deduced from ecological principles threaten the vested interests of commerce; it is hardly surprising that the financial and political power created by these investments should be used sometimes to suppress environmental impact studies. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
In a competitive world of limited resources, total freedom of individual action is intolerable ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
I really believe that every character comes from the well of the artist. ~ Melora Hardin
Hardin quotes by Melora Hardin
Hardin wouldn't run. ~ Johnny Cash
Hardin quotes by Johnny Cash
Sometimes it's faith that people hold on to. Sometimes, if you're lucky enough, you can confide in someone else and trust them to pull you out of the pain before you dwell in it for too long. Pain is one of those hideous places that, once visited, you have to fight your way out, and even when you think you have escaped it, you find that it has permanently marked you. If you're like me, you don't have anyone to depend on, no one to take your hand and assure you that you'll make it through this hell. Instead, you have to lace up your boots, grab your own hand, and pull yourself out. ~ Anna Todd
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd
Malthus has been buried many times, and Malthusian scarcity with him. But as Garrett Hardin remarked, anyone who has to be reburied so often cannot be entirely dead. ~ Herman E. Daly
Hardin quotes by Herman E. Daly
Why are ecologists and environmentalists so feared and hated? This is because in part what they have to say is new to the general public, and the new is always alarming. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
It is a mistake to think that we can control the breeding of mankind in the long run by an appeal to conscience. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
There was so many things I should have said, could have said, and sure as hell would have said if I had known my days in heaven were numbered.
Had I know that I would be cast out so soon, I would have worshipped her the way she deserves. ~ Anna Todd
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd
No one should be able to enter a wilderness by mechanical means. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
You aren't some conquest of mine - you're everything to me! You're my breath, my pain, my heart, my life! ~ Anna Todd
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd
Hardin lived in a world he manipulated day to day, you never knew when a piece of information might have a use. Life was a jigsaw puzzle someone had kicked apart on the day Hardin was born and he was still putting it back together a piece at a time. ~ William Gay
Hardin quotes by William Gay
Close your eyes. Grab a hand. And jump! Your destiny is waiting for you at the bottom! ~ B.M. Hardin
Hardin quotes by B.M. Hardin
Thou shalt not transgress the carrying capacity ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
Freedom to breed will bring ruin to all. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
the only person worth trusting...entirely...is you~ ~ B.M. Hardin
Hardin quotes by B.M. Hardin
Religious reasons, which is no reason. I notice Skeptic had a review of Dennett's book, Darwin's Dangerous Idea. Religious reasons amount to what Dennett terms "skyhooks." Do you believe in skyhooks? I don't. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
Continuity is at the heart of conservatism: ecology serves that heart. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
If persons in the untreated ... group die at any time in the study interval, they are reported ... In the treated group, however, deaths which occur before completion of the treatment are rejected from the data, since these patients do not then meet the criteria ... of the term 'treated'. The longer it takes for completion of the treatment, ... the worse the error ... ~ Hardin B. Jones
Hardin quotes by Hardin B. Jones
Society does not need more children; but it does need more loved children. Quite literally, we cannot afford unloved children - but we pay heavily for them every day. There should not be the slightest communal concern when a woman elects to destroy the life of her thousandth-of-an-ounce embryo. But all society should rise up in alarm when it hears that a baby that is not wanted is about to be born. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
I have a tape recorder, and I just sing into it. I like to write that way. Sometimes I'll just get melodic ideas, and then I'll go home and sit down and add the lyrics. Or sometimes I'll get a lyric idea that I love. Usually it's pretty combined. Usually I get some kind of a lyrical concept and a melody and work with that. ~ Melora Hardin
Hardin quotes by Melora Hardin
Why do you think it is stupid to go to windows instead of to doors?"

"Because you advertise what you're trying to hide, silly. If I have a secret, I don't put tape over my mouth and let everyone know I have a secret. I talk just as much as usual, only about something else. Didn't you ever read any of the sayings of Salvor Hardin? He was our first Mayor, you know."

"Yes, I know."

"Well, he used to say that only a lie that wasn't ashamed of itself could possibly succeed. He also said that nothing had to be true, but everything had to sound true. Well, when you come in through a window, it's a lie that's ashamed of itself and it doesn't sound true."

"Then what would you have done?"

"If I had wanted to see my father on top secret business, I would have made his acquaintance openly and seen him about all sorts of strictly legitimate things. And then when everyone knew all about you and connected you with my father as a matter of course, you could be as top secret as you wanted and nobody would ever think of questioning it. ~ Isaac Asimov
Hardin quotes by Isaac Asimov
You know when you play Pictionary and someone draws a state? My biggest fear is that I'm not gonna know what state it is. I'm so bad at geography. ~ Melora Hardin
Hardin quotes by Melora Hardin
It is remarkable, Hardin, how the religion of science has grabbed hold. ~ Isaac Asimov
Hardin quotes by Isaac Asimov
We needed to be able to stand alone before we could stand together, and I'm so thankful that we made it through the darkness, the fighting, the pain, and emerged hand in hand, stronger than ever. ~ Anna Todd
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd
Hardin is like a drug; each time I take the tiniest bit of him, I crave more and more. He consumes my thoughts and invades my dreams. ~ Anna Todd
Hardin quotes by Anna Todd
To say that we mutually agree to coercion is not to say that we are required to enjoy it, or even to pretend we enjoy it. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
But as population became denser, the natural chemical and biological recycling processes became overloaded, calling for a redefinition of property rights. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
Beginning in 1940, ... questionable grades of (low) malignancy were classed as cancer ... the proportion of 'cancer' cures ... increased rapidly ... ~ Hardin B. Jones
Hardin quotes by Hardin B. Jones
The other bodyguard, Hardin, grinned, showing his crooked teeth. "Sidewinder. Like the snake." The room was silent, waiting for his point. "You know what they used to call the Green Berets when we were active?"
Ty tried hard not to roll his eyes. Behind him, Kelly answered wryly, "Snake Eaters."
Both security men chuckled. "Best watch out, Sidewinders. Don't want to get eaten."
Nick barked a laugh. "I appreciate the offer, Hoss, but I got someone taking care of me already."
Hardin squared his shoulders, his face growing ruddy.
"Don't worry, you'll find that someone special," Kelly assured him, his voice sincere. ~ Abigail Roux
Hardin quotes by Abigail Roux
The likelihood of treatment (of any one patient) increases with the length of time since the origin of the disease ... Those cases in which the neoplastic process progresses slowly ... are more likely to be transferred to the 'treated' category than to remain in the 'untreated' ... ~ Hardin B. Jones
Hardin quotes by Hardin B. Jones
Many times, I've been broken. Often used and abused. Many trials go unspoken. Often leaving me sad and confused. But Lord if you put your hands on me, And grant me just a touch of your Peace. I know that I can win this race, With the help of your mercy and grace. Lord fix me, I'm broken, and I need to move on. ~ B.M. Hardin
Hardin quotes by B.M. Hardin
You can never do merely one thing. The law applies to any action that changes something in a complex system. The point is that an action taken to alleviate a problem will trigger several effects, some of which may offset or even negate the one intended. ~ Garrett Hardin
Hardin quotes by Garrett Hardin
I love being a mommy, and I love being an artist, and I love being a singer and an actress and making a movie - all that stuff I feel very passionate about, so I have a lot of energy for it. ~ Melora Hardin
