Here, thou incestuous, murderous, damned Dane,
Drink off this potion! ~ William Shakespeare
Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
But did not Shakespeare say a man can smile, and smile, and be a villain? ~ Stephen King
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Stephen King
For murder, though it have no tongue, will speak With most miraculous organ. ~ William Shakespeare
Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
Your worm is your only emperor for diet: we fat all creatures else to fat us, and we fat ourselves for maggots: your fat king and your lean beggar is but variable service, two dishes, but to one table: that's the end. ~ William Shakespeare
Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
The undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns. ~ William Shakespeare
Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
What's Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba,
That he should weep for her? ~ William Shakespeare
Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
No place indeed should murder sanctuarize; Revenge should have no bounds. ~ William Shakespeare
Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
There is special providence in the fall of a sparrow. ~ William Shakespeare
Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
Many undoubtedly owe their good fortune to the circumstance that they possess a pleasing smile with which they win hearts. Yet these hearts would do better to beware and to learn from Hamlet's tables that one may smile, and smile, and be a villain. ~ Arthur Schopenhauer
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Arthur Schopenhauer
Suffice it to say I was compelled to create this group in order to find everyone who is, let's say, borrowing liberally from my INESTIMABLE FOLIO OF CANONICAL MASTERPIECES (sorry, I just do that sometimes), and get you all together. It's the least I could do.

I mean, seriously. Those soliloquies in Moby-Dick? Sooo Hamlet and/or Othello, with maybe a little Shylock thrown in. Everyone from Pip in Great Expectations to freakin' Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre mentions my plays, sometimes completely mangling my words in nineteenth-century middle-American dialect for humorous effect (thank you, Sir Clemens). Many people (cough Virginia Woolf cough) just quote me over and over again without attribution. I hear James Joyce even devoted a chapter of his giant novel to something called the "Hamlet theory," though do you have some sort of newfangled English? It looks like gobbledygook to me. The only people who don't seek me out are like Chaucer and Dante and those ancient Greeks. For whatever reason.

And then there are the titles. The Sound and the Fury? Mine. Infinite Jest? Mine. Proust, Nabokov, Steinbeck, and Agatha Christie all have titles that are me-inspired. Brave New World? Not just the title, but half the plot has to do with my work. Even Edgar Allan Poe named a character after my Tempest's Prospero (though, not surprisingly, things didn't turn out well for him!). I'm like the star to every wandering bark, the arrow of every compass, the buzzard to every haw ~ Sarah Schmelling
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Sarah Schmelling
Why is it that we honor the Great Thieves of Whitehall, for Acts that in Whitechapel would merit hanging? Why admire one sort of Thief, and despise the other? I suggest, 'tis because of the Scale of the Crime.
What we of the Mobility love to watch, is any of the Great Motrices, Greed, Lust, Revenge, taken out of all measure, brought quite past the scale of the ev'ryday world, approaching what we always knew were the true Dimensions of Desire. Let Antony lose the world for Cleopatra, to be sure,
not Dick his Day's Wages, at the Tavern. ~ Thomas Pynchon
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Thomas Pynchon
No risk is too great if the potential reward is revenge. ~ Paul Platt
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Paul Platt
When you focus on revenge, you're uploading only negativity to your system. You should focus on moving forward and enjoy the little things in life. For we know, that innocent smile of yours is a big obstacle in the eyes of the haters. ~ Fasela Oosterwolde
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Fasela Oosterwolde
Kris was in black running shorts and a tight gray T-shirt constructed from some sort of magical material that clung to his muscles and triggered a gush of epinephrine while her amygdala attempted to reconcile two conflicting signals from her prefrontal cortex: attraction and revenge. "All ~ Sarah Strohmeyer
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Sarah Strohmeyer
It was horrible and senseless, and I now felt the sudden need to drink scotch, brood, and read Edgar Allen Poe or the ending to Hamlet. Maybe I would top it all off with some YouTube videos of drowning kittens while listening to Radiohead. ~ Penny Reid
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Penny Reid
Oft have I heard that grief softens the mind,
And makes it fearful and degenerate;
Think therefore on revenge and cease to weep. ~ William Shakespeare
Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
If it were evenly distributed," said Rodman, "the example of justice in the world might lead at last to a sane world policy. As it is, there is world despair and fury over the selfish fortune of a few, and all behave irrationally in revenge. ~ Isaac Asimov
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Isaac Asimov
This is Glesca ... Any time you're confused, take a wee minute to remind yourself of that inescapable fact: this is Glesca. We don't do subtle, we don't do nuanced, we don't do conspiracy. We do pish-heid bampot bludgeoning his girlfriend to death in a fit of paranoid rage induced by forty-eight hours straight on the batter. We do coked-up neds jumping on a guy's heid outside a nightclub because he looked at them funny. We do drug-dealing gangster rockets shooting other drug-dealing gangster rockets as comeback for something almost identical a fortnight ago. We do bam-on-bam. We do tit-for-tat, score-settling, feuds, jealousy, petty revenge. We do straightforward. We do obvious. We do cannaemisswhodunit. When you hear hoofbeats on Sauchiehall Street, it's gaunny be a horse, no' a zebra ... '. ~ Christopher Brookmyre
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Christopher Brookmyre
I could hardly get to sleep for dreaming of revenge. ~ Ralph Ellison
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Ralph Ellison
To forgive is indeed the best form of self-interest since anger, resentment, and revenge are corrosive of that summum bonum, the greatest good. ~ Desmond Tutu
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Desmond Tutu
Our knowledge will take its revenge on us, just as ignorance exacted its revenge during the Middle Ages. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
For the taking of revenge, a man locks himself up alone and thinks. His stomach must be empty for his head to be full. Vengeance comes a little from the heart and a lot from the mind; one must take oneself apart from the noise of men and of things, even from what resembles them; only the voices of bells and of thunder are allowed. Let the room in which you meditate be dark, narrow and warm. ~ Xavier Forneret
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Xavier Forneret
Love doesn't please itself by seeking revenge. Love sacrifices itself for the good of others. ~ Kerrelyn Sparks
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Kerrelyn Sparks
It is human nature to seek revenge in the face of relentless suffering. You can't expect an unhealthy person to think logically. ~ Izzeldin Abuelaish
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Izzeldin Abuelaish
I think he's going down, ... It's gonna be the 'Revenge for O.J. ' ~ Nelly
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Nelly
Some people, he says, they hide themselves away from the eyes of the world. They hunker down and shiver. They find four walls high enough to put between them and everything else. Those people, to them the world is a frightful place. See, you and me, we're different. When we are called on to move, we move. It don't matter the cause or the distance. Revenge or ministration, reason or folly - it's all the same to us. ~ Alden Bell
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Alden Bell
What, then, can Shakespearean tragedy, on this brief view, tell us about human time in an eternal world? It offers imagery of crisis, of futures equivocally offered, by prediction and by action, as actualities; as a confrontation of human time with other orders, and the disastrous attempt to impose limited designs upon the time of the world. What emerges from Hamlet is--after much futile, illusory action--the need of patience and readiness. The 'bloody period' of Othello is the end of a life ruined by unseasonable curiosity. The millennial ending of Macbeth, the broken apocalypse of Lear, are false endings, human periods in an eternal world. They are researches into death in an age too late for apocalypse, too critical for prophecy; an age more aware that its fictions are themselves models of the human design on the world. But it was still an age which felt the human need for ends consonant with the past, the kind of end Othello tries to achieve by his final speech; complete, concordant. As usual, Shakespeare allows him his tock; but he will not pretend that the clock does not go forward. The human perpetuity which Spenser set against our imagery of the end is represented here also by the kingly announcements of Malcolm, the election of Fortinbras, the bleak resolution of Edgar.

In apocalypse there are two orders of time, and the earthly runs to a stop; the cry of woe to the inhabitants of the earth means the end of their time; henceforth 'time shall be no more.' I ~ Frank Kermode
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Frank Kermode
I had been weakened and I had been hurt, but I would never quit. I would be strong once again and I would fight, not because I was the Protector and not out of revenge or hatred, but out of honor, because that's what Willy would do. ~ M.R. Merrick
Hamlet Revenge quotes by M.R. Merrick
That's the thing about hatred, it can become rancid, and it'll turn into poison if you keep it bottled too long. Hatred will eat through any container and seep into the groundwater of a soul. Revenge is never enough to expel it because it keeps bubbling up anew. What you don't realize–can't really–is that by that time, it's all you are. You don't have the hate in you. The hate is you. When that wine is consumed, you won't ever be able to rid yourself of it. Can't vomit it up or spit it out. It'd be as impossible as escaping yourself. ~ Michael J. Sullivan
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Michael J. Sullivan
Hamlet' dwarfs 'Hamilton' - it dwarfs pretty much everything - but there's a revealing similarity between them. Shakespeare's longest play leaves its audience in the dark about some basic and seemingly crucial facts. It's not as if the Bard forgot, in the course of all those words, to tell us whether Hamlet was crazy or only pretending: He wanted us to wonder. He forces us to work on a puzzle that has no definite answer. And this mysteriousness is one reason why we find the play irresistible.

'Hamilton' is riddled with question marks. The first act begins with a question, and so does the second. The entire relationship between Hamilton and Burr is based on a mutual and explicit lack of comprehension: 'I will never understand you,' says Hamilton, and Burr wonders, 'What it is like in his shoes?'

Again and again, Lin distinguishes characters by what they wish they knew. 'What'd I miss?' asks Jefferson in the song that introduces him. 'Would that be enough?' asks Eliza in the song that defines her. 'Why do you write like you're running out of time?' asks everybody in a song that marvels at Hamilton's drive, and all but declares that there's no way to explain it. 'Hamilton', like 'Hamlet', gives an audience the chance to watch a bunch of conspicuously intelligent and well-spoken characters fill the stage with 'words, words, words,' only to discover, again and again, the limits to what they can comprehend. ~ Lin-Manuel Miranda
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Lin-Manuel Miranda
i've always admired the last words of condemned men, the epitome of false bravado and i've often thought that that would not be a bad way to end, to go down snarling screaming for revenge, if not in this life then in the next, swearing vegeance in another time place dimension great ~ Raegan Butcher
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Raegan Butcher
What is a man, If his chief good and market of his time Be but to sleep and feed? A beast, no more: ~ William Shakespeare
Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
He who seeks revenge should dig two graves. ~ Mick Haines
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Mick Haines
Women are always anxious to urge bachelors to matrimony; is it from charity, or revenge ?. ~ Louis Gustave Vapereau
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Louis Gustave Vapereau
He was digging in his garden--digging, too, in his own mind, laboriously turning up the substance of his thought. Death--and he drove in his spade once, and again, and yet again. And all our yesterdays have lighted fools they way to dusty death. A convincing thunder rumbled through the words. He lifted another spadeful of earth. Why had Linda died? Why had she been allowed to become gradually less than human and at last... He shuddered. A good kissing carrion. He planted his foot on his spade and stamped it fiercely into the tough ground. As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods; they kills us for their sport. Thunder again; words that proclaimed themselves true--truer somehow than truth itself. And yet that same Gloucester had called them ever-gentle gods. Besides, thy best of rest is sleep, and that thou oft provok'st; yet grossly fear'st thy death which is no more. No more than sleep. Sleep. Perchance to dream. His spade struck against a stone; he stooped to pick it up. For in that sleep of death, what dreams...? ~ Aldous Huxley
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Aldous Huxley
Concealing himself from his father's wrath, behind the barn with wick turned low and his face two inches from the rough sawtooth page, Young Crawford had read of these atrocities in Beadle's Dime Library and fantasized about "calling out" the brutal old man who had sired him, "throwing down" on him with the "hogleg" he wore high on his hip, and blasting him into hell; after which he would go "on the scout," separating high-interest banks and arrogant railroad barons from their soiled coin and distributing it among their victims, or failing that into his own pockets and saddle pouches and living the "high Life" in saloons and "dance halls" where beautiful women in brief costumes admired his straight legs and square jaw and told him of the men who had "ruined" them (he knew not just how, only that the act was disgraceful and its effects permanent), whereupon he sought the blackguards out and deprived them of their lives. There was usually profit involved; invariably the men were thieves who lived in close proximity to their "ill-gotten booty," and didn't it say somewhere in Scripture that robbing a thief was no sin? If it didn't, it should have. ~ Loren D. Estleman
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Loren D. Estleman
Just like me. Just like so many others. Tragedies may change who we are, may alter the paths we take, sometimes drastically. But we can still continue on, continue living for tomorrow. Tomorrow is always worth fighting for." Mach Derune, A Time for Revenge, The End of Old Ways series ~ A.W.Chrystalis
Hamlet Revenge quotes by A.W.Chrystalis
Why don't clouds fall, since everything else does? Because gravity is less than the strength of the air that keeps them up there. Clever, right? Yes, but one day they fall as rain. That is my revenge. ~ Clarice Lispector
Hamlet Revenge quotes by Clarice Lispector
Clarence Darrow, one of history's greatest lawyers, once noted "There is no such thing as justice, in or out of court." Perhaps because justice is a flawed concept that ultimately comes down to the decision of twelve people. People with their own experiences, prejudices, feelings about what defines right and wrong. Which is why, when the system fails us, we must go out and seek our own justice. ~ Emily Thorne
