We are spokespersons for our Lord, and advocacy is in our genes. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
I gaped. "You are not seriously that chauvinistic?"
"Hmmm ... " He stroked his chin dramatically. "Maybe not in real life." Hillbilly again. "But as your fake husband ... yes, I think I am."
I eyed him up and down. "I need to call the Guinness Book of Records or Gray's Anatomy or something, because I am standing here looking at the single largest asshole ever known to man. ~ Kristin Walker
Guinness quotes by Kristin Walker
Yes, I was on the cover of 'Vogue,' but girls on the cover of 'Vogue' are the most scared of rejection. Models are the most insecure of them all. Actually, actors and actresses are, and then musicians, and then models! ~ Jasmine Guinness
Guinness quotes by Jasmine Guinness
A person who is keen to shake your hand usually has something up his sleeve. ~ Alec Guinness
Guinness quotes by Alec Guinness

Guinness quotes by Jasmine Guinness
God is the ultimate source of all power. All human power is therefore derived, limited, unstable and transient. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Who is more foolish? The fool or the fool that follows it? ~ Alec Guinness
Guinness quotes by Alec Guinness
Interestingly, God's remedy for Elijah's depression was not a refresher course in theology but food and sleep ... Before God spoke to him at all, Elijah was fed twice and given a good chance to sleep. Only then, and very gently, did God confront him with his error. This is always God's way. Having made us as human beings, He respects our humanness and treats us with integrity. That is, He treats us true to the truth of who we are. It is human beings and not God who have made spirituality impractical. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
I hate the idea of making any of my children into a mini-me. That would be terrible. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
F they'd been working with Alec Guinness, for instance, they wouldn't have known they were born if they'd not towed the line! ~ Alan Bennett
Guinness quotes by Alan Bennett
Since having kids, I am more careful about saving rather than splurging. I used to spend all my money on trainers and high heels that I couldn't walk in. ~ Jasmine Guinness
Guinness quotes by Jasmine Guinness
In the same way, metrics can record the frequency of our church attendance, the regularity of our Bible reading and the exact amount of our tithing, but they can never gauge the genuineness of any of them, or whether they are any better than "the noise of the solemn assemblies" against which the prophets fulminated. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Tallest usable pogo stick ~ Guinness World Records
Guinness quotes by Guinness World Records
An Irishman walks into a pub," she begins and the bar went silent. "The bartender asks him, 'What'll you have?'" Her Irish accent was spot on. "The man says, 'Give me three pints of Guinness, please.' The bartender brings him three pints and the man proceeds to alternately sip one, then the other, then the third until they're gone. He then orders three more.

"The bartender says, 'Sir, no need to order as many at a time. I'll keep an eye on it and when you get low, I'll bring you a fresh one.' The man replies, 'You don't understand. I have two brothers, one in Australia and one in the States. We made a vow to each other that every Saturday night we'd still drink together. So right now, me brothers have three Guinness stouts too, and we're drinking together.'

"The bartender thought this a wonderful tradition and every week the man came in and ordered three beers." January's playing and voice became more solemn, dramatic. "But one week, he ordered only two." The crowd oohed and ahhed. "He slowly drank them," she continued darkly, "and then ordered two more. The bartender looked at him sadly. 'Sir, I know your tradition, and, agh, I'd just like to say that I'm sorry for your loss.'

"The man looked on him strangely before it finally dawned on him. 'Oh, me brothers are fine - I just quit drinking. ~ Fisher Amelie
Guinness quotes by Fisher Amelie
Many years ago I sent an old, beloved jacket to a cleaner, the Sycamore Cleaners. It was a leather jacket covered in Guinness and blood and marmalade, one of those jobs ... and it came back with a little note pinned to it, and on the note it said, 'It distresses us to return work which is not perfect.' So that will do for me. That can go on my tombstone. ~ Peter O'Toole
Guinness quotes by Peter O'Toole
Culturally, one of the best arguments we can make is, wait and see. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
The opposite of having faith is having self-pity. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Styling is designing for obsolescence. ~ Alec Guinness
Guinness quotes by Alec Guinness
Nothing terrifies me more than being social. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
Modern life assaults us with an infinite range of things we could do, we would love to do, or some people tell us we should do. But we are not God and we are neither infinite nor eternal. We are quite simply finite. We have only so many years, so much energy, so many gray cells, and so many bank notes in our wallets. 'Life is too short to ... ' eventually shortens to 'life is too short. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
My style is difficult to contain in a sentence; it's ever evolving. Generally I'm drawn to clean cuts and avoid patterns. I tend to choose structure and block colors, but these are all just loose guidelines. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
My husband says he wants to have the best hay field in Britain. I can't wait. ~ Jasmine Guinness
Guinness quotes by Jasmine Guinness
After half a millennium of dominance, the West is being eclipsed in the global era, the United States as the lead society in the West stands on the verge of relative if not absolute decline, and much of the Christian Church in both Europe and North America is in a sorry state of weakness, confusion, unfaithfulness and cultural captivity. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Oh Beer! Oh Hodgson, Guinness, Allsop, Bass! Names that should be on every infant's tongue! Shall days and months and years and centuries pass, And still your merits be unrecked, unsung? ~ Charles Stuart Calverley
Guinness quotes by Charles Stuart Calverley
It is realistic rather than cynical to observe that in a fallen world there are degrees of virtue in relation to what is right, and good and just. These are important in our human judgments of others, even though they may be blown to the winds by the grace of God. To "do good because we know it is good" is different from "doing good only because we know we are seen," and this in turn is different from "doing good only because we are afraid of being thought to be bad," which in turn is different again from "the complete abandonment of any pretense of caring about being good or being seen." The first type of action springs from what we call morality, the second respectability, the third hypocrisy, and the fourth sheer wickedness. This ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
The American 'unum' has been lost since the Sixties. If this continues, there will soon be no unifying American identity and vision to balance the 'pluribus,' and the days of the Republic will be numbered. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
I just am who I am. And then when people label me eccentric or different, I'm kind of astonished because I think, 'This is completely normal. This is just how I am, it's how I've always been.' ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
One overall conclusion is plain: under the weight of the combined impact of exploding pluralism, the expansion of the state, and emerging separationism, the early American settlement, so brilliantly described by Tocqueville, is gone, and gone for good. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
The deep logic of God's truth can be expressed in both stories and arguments, by questions as well as statements, through reason and the imagination, through the four Gospels as well as through the book of Romans. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
We have too many poisons in our diets now, like sugar and caffeine. ~ Jasmine Guinness
Guinness quotes by Jasmine Guinness
The applause of all but very good men is no more than the precise measure of their possible hostility. ~ Alec Guinness
Guinness quotes by Alec Guinness
I never read gossip press. I just read books. And I never switch on the TV anymore. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
What is undeniable is that when comforts and convenience sap our energies and idealism, inactivity secretes sloth in to our minds like a poison in the blood. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Mastering our emotions has nothing to do with asceticism or repression, for the purpose is not to break the emotions or deny them but to "break in" the emotions, making them teachable because they are tamed. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
I do now most heartily desire to live but to exalt Jesus; to live preaching and to die preaching; to preach to perishing sinners till I drop down dead. ~ Henry Grattan Guinness
Guinness quotes by Henry Grattan Guinness
I give lectures on globalization. I have lived on three continents. I have no quarrel with a global consciousness. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
The account in the gospel of John says three times that Jesus was angry. One of the words used is the Greek term for "furious indignation" - the word used by Aeschylus to describe war horses rearing up on their hind legs, snorting through their nostrils, and charging into battle. This was the reaction of Jesus of Nazareth when face to face with a loved one's death. The world that God created good and beautiful and whole was now broken and in ruins. In moments Jesus was going to do something, but his first response was outrage - instinctive, blazing outrage. Clearly, death was even worse in his eyes than in ours. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
President Obama, by the way, has set a Guinness World Record as the fastest person to get a million Twitter followers. Obama now has as many followers as the Republicans have presidential candidates. ~ Conan O'Brien
Guinness quotes by Conan O'Brien
Memories are like mercury. Every time you sort of try to get near them, they slip out of your hand like a bar of soap. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
I knew nothing about my mum's family. Her parents were dead by the time she was 14. She was brought up by two aunts, and she only ever met one uncle. ~ Jasmine Guinness
Guinness quotes by Jasmine Guinness
above all the temptation to think that God is no more certain than our best arguments for him. As C. S. Lewis admitted, I have found that nothing is more dangerous to one's own faith than the work of an apologist. No doctrine of that Faith seems to me so spectral, so unreal as one that I have just successfully defended in a public debate. For a moment, you see, it has seemed to rest on oneself: as a result, when you go away from that debate, it seems no stronger than that weak pillar. That is why we apologists take our lives in our own hands and can be saved only by falling back continually from the web of our own arguments . . . from Christian apologetics into Christ Himself. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
When I think my hair needs a bit of help, I just glue another bit onto my head. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
To follow Jesus is to pay the cost of discipleship, and then to die to ourselves, to our own interests, our own agendas and reputations. It is to pick up our crosses and count the cost of losing all that contradicts his will and his way - including our reputations before the world, and our standing with the people and in the communities that we once held dear. It is to live before one audience, the audience of One, and therefore to die to all other conflicting opinions and assessments. There is no room here for such contemporary ideas as the looking-glass self, and no consideration here for trivial contemporary obsessions such as one's legacy. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Calling is more than purely cultural, but it is also more than purely personal. Discover the meaning of calling and you discover the heart of the gospel itself. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
We've got to make greedy banks pass on interest rate cuts in full, and we've got to see rents coming down. ~ Jasmine Guinness
Guinness quotes by Jasmine Guinness
If you go into a relationship when you're 16, you've got no baggage. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
You are just landmark stupid, aren't you? Has Guinness called yet about that world record? ~ Rachel Caine
Guinness quotes by Rachel Caine
If the manifest of ingredients on the bottle had been legible, it would have read something like this: Water, blackstrap molasses, imported habanero peppers, salt, garlic, ginger, tomato puree, axle grease, real hickory smoke, snuff, butts of clove cigarettes, Guinness Stout fermentation dregs, uranium mill tailings, muffler cores, monosodium glutamate, nitrates, nitrites, nitrotes and nitrutes, nutrites, natrotes, powdered pork nose hairs, dynamite, activated charcoal, match-heads, used pipe cleaners, tar, nicotine, single-malt whiskey, smoked beef lymph nodes, autumn leaves, red fuming nitric acid, bituminous coal, fallout, printer's ink, laundry starch, drain cleaner, blue chrysotile asbestos, carrageenan, BHA, BHT, and natural flavorings. ~ Neal Stephenson
Guinness quotes by Neal Stephenson
The Christian church in the U.S. is still strong numerically, but it has lost its decisive influence both in American public life and in American culture as a whole, especially in the major elite institutions of society. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
People talk about me as if I am the sole inheritor of the Guinness family fortune and worth masses, but I have hundreds of cousins. ~ Jasmine Guinness
Guinness quotes by Jasmine Guinness
A marriage is a solemn affair. The tempest of emotions and the myriad of arrangements are giddying, and when one is faced with these, clothing seems to be the last of one's priorities. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
I'm obviously not an advocate of Christian America or a simplistic view of America as 'a city on a hill.' ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Her green eyes meet mine in the Guinness mirror behind the bar and it feels like all the air has been sucked out of the room. I've never slept with this girl, but she was the first I remember wanting.
Harper Gray. ~ Trish Doller
Guinness quotes by Trish Doller
Part of being a conscious human being, is having an intention. And if you put an intention into whatever you do, it's definitely going to be more satisfying in the end ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
Augustine says that you don't understand a nation by the throw weight of its military or the strength of its research universities or the size of its population, but by looking at what it loves in common. To assess a nation, you look at the health and strength of its ideals. And there's no question that the common love in America is freedom. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Once again, just because I prefer Guinness to lemonade that doesn't mean I am not particular about the temperature at which the Guinness is served; and I believe Paul would have told Calvin to take his dark Irish beer out of the fridge, to let it come up to room temperature and taste its full flavour. ~ N. T. Wright
Guinness quotes by N. T. Wright
I was given a thick paperback copy of the 'Guinness Book of Records' when I was 11 years old, and I read it gluttonously, cover to cover, paying special lip-smacking attention to all the incredibly gruesome chapters about the violence of human history. ~ Russell Smith
Guinness quotes by Russell Smith
People tend to assume that I come from a long line of castle-dwelling gentry and am made of money. ~ Jasmine Guinness
Guinness quotes by Jasmine Guinness
I shrivel up every time someone mentions Star Wars to me. ~ Alec Guinness
Guinness quotes by Alec Guinness
The original Guinness Brewery in Dublin has a 9,000-year lease on its property at a perpetual rate of 45 pounds per year--one of the best bargains in Irish commercial history! ~ Rashers Tierney
Guinness quotes by Rashers Tierney
I always dress scruffily, but at weekends I live in muddy Wellies. ~ Jasmine Guinness
Guinness quotes by Jasmine Guinness
The truth is this: We always have sure and sufficient reasons for knowing why we can trust God, but do not always know what God is doing and why. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
It [ non-Euclidean geometry ] would be ranked among the most famous achievements of the entire [nineteenth] century, but up to 1860 the interest was rather slight. ~ Ivor Grattan-Guinness
Guinness quotes by Ivor Grattan-Guinness
Once commonly called "atomism," the genealogy of atheism can be traced all the way back through the Enlightenment to Roman poets such as Lucretius and his poem De Rerum Natura, and behind that to Greek philosophers such as Epicurus and Democritus and their philosophy of atomism. It was precisely such a philosophy that contributed to the classical world a strong sense of fate and the futility of both life and human purpose. And it also provided the dark setting against which the brilliance of the hope of the good news of Jesus shone by contrast - as soon it will once again. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
The logic behind this drive to deception and self-deception is simple. If sin is the claim to "the right to myself," it includes the claim to "the right to my view of things." And since we are each finite, "my view of things" is necessarily restricted and simply cannot see the full picture. We therefore turn a blind eye to all other ways of seeing things that do not fit ours, and especially to God's view of things. As theologian N. T. Wright points out, trees behave as trees, rocks as rocks and the seas as the seas, but "Only humans, it seems, have the capacity to live as something other than what they are."27 ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Followers of Jesus who count the cost and are willing to take up their crosses after him must have broad shoulders. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
To come to faith on the basis of experience alone is unwise, though not so foolish as to reject faith altogether because of lack of experience ... the quality of a Christian's experience depends on the quality of his faith, just as the quality of his faith depends in turn on the quality of his understanding of God's truth. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Love is agony, isn't it? I've been involved with someone for some time now, but it's all so complicated. It's never straightforward is it? You meet someone, you fall in love, it's the most wonderful thing ever but ... There's always something that's not quite right about love, isn't there? ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
[Adapted and condensed Valedictorian speech:]

I'm going to ask that you seriously consider modeling your life, not in the manner of the Dalai Lama or Jesus - though I'm sure they're helpful - but something a bit more hands-on, Carassius auratus auratus, commonly known as the domestic goldfish. People make fun of the goldfish. People don't think twice about swallowing it. Jonas Ornata III, Princeton class of '42, appears in the Guinness Book of World Records for swallowing the greatest number of goldfish in a fifteen-minute interval, a cruel total of thirty-nine. In his defense, though, I don't think Jonas understood the glory of the goldfish, that they have magnificent lessons to teach us. If you live like a goldfish, you can survive the harshest, most thwarting of circumstances. You can live through hardships that make your cohorts - the guppy, the neon tetra - go belly-up at the first sign of trouble. There was an infamous incident described in a journal published by the Goldfish Society of America - a sadistic five-year-old girl threw hers to the carpet, stepped on it, not once but twice - luckily she'd done it on a shag carpet and thus her heel didn't quite come down fully on the fish. After thirty harrowing seconds she tossed it back into its tank. It went on to live another forty-seven years. They can live in ice-covered ponds in the dead of winter. Bowls that haven't seen soap in a year. And they don't die from neglect, not immediately. They hold on for thre ~ Marisha Pessl
Guinness quotes by Marisha Pessl
I can't tell you how much we laughed on the set to have Alec Guinness in a scene with a big, furry dog that's flying a space ship. ~ Mark Hamill
Guinness quotes by Mark Hamill
Writing is a funny thing. It's not like you're working on a schedule. It comes in fits and starts. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
God is his own best apologist. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Fashion is not just about trends. It's about political history. You can trace it from the ancient Romans to probably until the '80s, and you can see defining moments that were due either to revolutions or changes in politics. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
Human beings all mimic each other. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
I've been really upset sometimes when I've been misquoted. And it's the one thing they use in big print. Or it's taken out of context. Thoughts are fluid and words are sticky. That's the thing. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
Negative freedom is freedom from - freedom from oppression, whether it's a colonial power or addiction to alcohol oppressing you. You need to be freed from negative freedom. Positive freedom is freedom for, freedom to be. And that's what's routinely ignored today. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
For all of us, the time is short and the span of life is brief On top of that, our real human problem, the Stoic philosopher Seneca said in a direct rebuke to the modern illusion, is not just that life is short but that we waste so much of it-so that life ceases for us "just when we are getting ready for it."35
But ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
The faithfulness principle (of the conservative) and the flexibility principle (of the liberal) are two sides of the same coin. They are both necessary if Christians are to follow their instructions and remain simultaneously "in" the world but not "of" it. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
People always assume I don't need to work for money, but my divorce settlement was not as much as it's always reported to be. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
What we do every St. Patty's day, which is wear green and drink a lot of Guinness. And maybe cry a little bit and laugh, and everyone will have to sing a song. That's how every funeral, christening, and wedding ends up in Ireland. Everyone ends up having to sing a song by the end of it. ~ Saoirse Ronan
Guinness quotes by Saoirse Ronan
I was fortunate enough to win a Super Bowl before retiring, and in fact I retired immediately after winning the Super Bowl. I went out on top, and intend to come out of the Guinness Pro Challenge on top, too. ~ Jerome Bettis
Guinness quotes by Jerome Bettis
In 1916, President Wilson drafted the speech in which he declared, "It shall not lie with the American people to dictate to another what their government shall be." His Secretary of State Robert Lansing wrote in the margin: "Haiti, S Domingo, Nicaragua, Panama."6 That ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Needless to say, the dynamic of the resurrection and a God who cannot be buried for long is the dynamic of a child's jack-in-the-box writ large in golden cosmic letters. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Beyond any question, the way the American founders consistently linked faith and freedom, republicanism and religion, was not only deliberate and thoughtful, it was also surprising and anything but routine. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
Everyone thought I was going to fall down on my shoes and I kept saying, 'Well if I do I'll just get up!' ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
Christian advocacy always goes wrong when we become the focus of our efforts, rather than the Lord. For when we are the focus, we subtly come to believe that God is no more certain than our defense of him. Argue and defend God well, and the world of faith appears unshakable. Defend him badly, and doubts creep in or crash down on top of us. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
I can't understand it when people are closed-minded. I mean, boy, have I made mistakes and been very wrong. I can't tell you the amounts of times I've been let down, but I still try to see the best in people. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
I don't do event dressing, because every day is an event. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
I'd quite like to have one place where I stay put. And I don't like living in cities all the time. In order to have ideas, you have to have some peace and quiet. ~ Daphne Guinness
Guinness quotes by Daphne Guinness
The belief seems to be spreading that intellectuals are no wiser as mentors, and no worthier as exemplars, than the witch doctors or priests of old. I share that skepticism. A dozen people picked at random on the street are at heart as likely to offer sensible views on moral and political matters as a cross-section of the intelligentsia. But I would go further. One of the principal lessons of our tragic century, which has seen so many millions of innocent lives sacrificed to improve the lot of humanity, is - beware intellectuals.3 ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
In working out our callings, we are to perform for one audience, the audience of One. ~ Os Guinness
Guinness quotes by Os Guinness
I think children of divorced parents do grow up quicker. You just do. ~ Jasmine Guinness
Guinness quotes by Jasmine Guinness
