Sleeping on the Ceiling
It is so peaceful on the ceiling!
It is the Place de la Concorde.
The little crystal chandelier
is off, the fountain is in the dark.
Not a soul is in the park.
Below, where the wallpaper is peeling,
the Jardin des Plantes has locked its gates.
Those photographs are animals.
The mighty flowers and foliage rustle;
under the leaves the insects tunnel.
We must go under the wallpaper
to meet the insect-gladiator,
to battle with a net and trident,
and leave the fountain and the square.
But oh, that we could sleep up there ... ~ Elizabeth Bishop
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Elizabeth Bishop
In those days, long before, a view over the rooftops of Paris was an unaffordable luxury. The apartment he had shared with a mousy young writer from Laon had a view of the Jardin de Luxembourg – if he stuck his head out of the window as far as it would go and twisted it to the left, a smudge of green foliage appeared in the corner of one eye. That had been his best apartment to date. They had decorated it in the 'Bohemian' style of the 1830s : a few volumes of Shakespeare and Victor Hugo, a Phrygian cap, an Algerian hookah, a skull on a broomstick handle (from the brother of a friend, Charles Toubin, who was an intern at one of the big hospitals) and, of course, a window box of geraniums, which was not only pretty but also illegal. (Death by falling window box was always high up the official list of fatalities.) For a proper view of Paris, they visited Henry's painter friends who lived in a warren of attic rooms near the Barriere d'Enfer and called themselves the Water-Drinkers. When the weather was fine and the smell of their own squalor became unbearable, they clambered onto the roof and sat on the gutters and ridges, sketching chimneyscapes, and sending up more smoke from their pipes than the fireplaces below.
Three of the Water-Drinkers had since died of various illnesses known collectively as 'lack of money'. When the last of the three was buried, in the spring of 1844, Henry and the others had found themselves at the graveside without a sou to give a gravedigger. ' ~ Graham Robb
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Graham Robb
Bill de Blasio was swept to the New York mayoralty on the promise of getting Gracie Mansion out from under the thumb of corporate elites. ~ Rick Perlstein
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Rick Perlstein
Books are pleasant, but if by being over-studious we impair our health and spoil our good humour, two of the best things we have, let us give it over. I, for my part, am one of those who think no fruit derived from them can recompense so great a loss. ~ Michel De Montaigne
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Michel De Montaigne
There is an investment of your own life experience in something as innocent as colour. ~ Stephen De Staebler
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Stephen De Staebler
When it comes to attractive females my policy has always been to nod first and ask questions later. ~ Matt De La Pena
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Matt De La Pena
He stabbed into her, driving deeply, repeatedly, iron-hard and demanding. She welcomed the piercing pleasure of his urgency, opening her legs wider, pushing her skirts away and wrapping her legs about him. His thrusts pushed her roughly against the table, but she rose to meet each one, clinging to him at the hip, grinding her own need to match his. Her fingers clawed at his buttocks, gripping him to her, pushing herself against him, devouring him.

The Gentlemen's Club ~ Emmanuelle De Maupassant
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Emmanuelle De Maupassant
A man of genius belongs to no period and no country. He speaks the language of nature, which is always everywhere the same. ~ Michel De Montaigne
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Michel De Montaigne
Course, and were part of his life with Jiro. ~ Edmund De Waal
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Edmund De Waal
Mankind is still embryonic ... [man is] the bud from which something more complicated and more centered than man himself should emerge. ~ Pierre Teilhard De Chardin
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Pierre Teilhard De Chardin
Consider the problem from the point of view of evil, evil being almost always pleasure's true and major charm; considered thus, the crime must appear greater when perpetrated upon a being of your identical sort than when inflicted upon one which is not, and this once established, the delight automatically doubles. ~ Marquis De Sade
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Marquis De Sade
We all teach ... the chemistry of Lavoisier and Gay-Lussac. ~ Marcellin Berthelot
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Marcellin Berthelot
Mathematics has not a foot to stand upon which is not purely metaphysical. ~ Thomas De Quincey
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Thomas De Quincey
My heart pulses with love. I am open to its healing and joyful effects. ~ Amy Leigh Mercree
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Amy Leigh Mercree
The love of study is in us the only lasting passion. All the others quit us in proportion as this miserable machine which holds them approaches its ruins. ~ Baron De Montesquieu
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Baron De Montesquieu
We tend to mix genders when we arrange ourselves around a table for meetings. A sort of accommodation is made by the men for the women: they make space for us. they are ever-so-slightly polite, we are ever-so-slightly grateful. When we stand up at the end of a meeting, we all give ourselves a metaphorical shake that is only partly the relief of having concluded our business: we are all released from the effort of fitting ourselves together.
When men speak in these meetings, women relax; when women speak, men grow tense. I have the impression that they never know what a woman is going to say, whereas they are reasonably sure what a man will address himself to and how he will do it. So are the women; for them, too, men tend to be predictable. Women listen to women with a different kind of attention, and part of it may be loyalty to our gender; we want all of us to do well, as if we have the esprit de corps of subalterns among generals. ~ Anne Truitt
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Anne Truitt
We seldom repent of speaking little, very often of speaking too much: a vulgar and trite maxim, which all the world knows and, but which all the world does not practice ~ Jean De La Bruyere
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Jean De La Bruyere
The American women are very pretty and have great simplicity of character, and the extreme neatness of their appearance is truly delightful: cleanliness is everywhere even more studiously attended to here than in England. ~ Marquis De Lafayette
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Marquis De Lafayette
Imagine a person with a gift of ridicule [He might say] First that a negative quantity has no logarithm; secondly that a negative quantity has no square root; thirdly that the first non-existent is to the second as the circumference of a circle is to the diameter. ~ Augustus De Morgan
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Augustus De Morgan
Hillary Clinton made a campaign stop in Las Vegas yesterday. She said she wants citizenship for undocumented immigrants. But after seeing Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo yesterday, immigrants said, 'You know what, we're good. We're gonna head back now. We had enough.' ~ Jimmy Fallon
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Jimmy Fallon
I wondered whether any woman could be happy with a man who says 'folderol'. ~ Peter De Vries
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Peter De Vries

Disappointment and feebleness imprint upon us a cowardly and valetudinarian virtue. ~ Michel De Montaigne
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Michel De Montaigne
The reason we do not let our friends see the very bottom of our hearts is not so much distrust of them as distrust of ourselves. ~ Francois De La Rochefoucauld
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Francois De La Rochefoucauld
Nothing is more usual than the sight of old people who yearn for retirement: and nothing is so rare than those who have retired and do not regret it. ~ Charles De Saint-Evremond
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Charles De Saint-Evremond
I am obliged to confess that I do not regard the abolition of slavery as a means of warding off the struggle of the two races in the Southern states. The Negroes may long remain slaves without complaining; but if they are once raised to the level of freemen, they will soon revolt at being deprived of almost all their civil rights; and as they cannot become the equals of the whites, they will speedily show themselves as enemies. ~ Alexis De Tocqueville
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Alexis De Tocqueville
A good design is not a democratic consensus. ~ Edward De Bono
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Edward De Bono
The cold is waiting to ooze through the soles of your shoes. Maggot-damp, this city is festering: home to hollow faces of grey flesh. They stare from windows unclean, into the sun never reaches: dismal lives lived in dismal constriction. ~ Emmanuelle De Maupassant
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Emmanuelle De Maupassant
Ever since the Tim Burton Batman of 1989, it has been de rigueur in movies to focus on the freaky alienation aspect of the superhero's life: This is how talented people make movies for 14-year-olds while retaining their self-respect. ~ David Edelstein
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by David Edelstein
Our innate imbalances are further aggravated by practical demands. Our jobs make relentless calls on a narrow band of our faculties, reducing our chances of achieving rounded personalities and leaving us to suspect (often in the gathering darkness of a Sunday evening) that much of who we are, or could be, has gone unexplored. Society ends up containing a range of unbalanced groups, each hungering to sate its particular psychological deficiency, forming the backdrop against which our frequently heated conflicts about what is beautiful plays themselves out. ~ Alain De Botton
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Alain De Botton
While I live with my family in South Florida, I enjoy visiting New York and always appreciate seeing so many Univision fans. ~ Raul De Molina
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Raul De Molina
When all shall fail us, then God will take care of us, and then all will not fail us since we shall have God. ~ Francis De Sales
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Francis De Sales
At the present time there still exist many doctrines which choose to leave in the shadow certain troubling aspects of a too complex situation. But their attempt to lie to us is in vain. Cowardice does not pay. Those reasonable metaphysics, those consoling ethics with which they would like to entice us only accentuate the disorder from which we suffer. ~ Simone De Beauvoir
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by Simone De Beauvoir
And as they walked along he sang "Tol-de-ri-de-oh!" at every step, he felt so gay. ~ L. Frank Baum
Guardapolvos De Jardin quotes by L. Frank Baum
