Was she conscious of her talent? Hardly. If asked about her cooking, Grandma would look down at her hands which some glorious instinct sent on journeys to be gloved in flour, or to plumb disencumbered turkeys, wrist-deep in search of their animal souls. Her gray eyes blinked from spectacles warped by forty years of oven blasts and blinded with strewing of pepper and sage, so she sometimes flung cornstarch over steaks, amazingly tender, succulent steaks! And sometimes dropped apricots into meat loaves, cross-pollinated meats, herbs, fruits, vegetables with no prejudice, no tolerance for recipe or formula, save that at the final moment of delivery, mouths watered, blood thundered in response. Her hands then, like the hands of Great-grandma before her, were Grandma's mystery, delight, and life. She looked at them in astonishment, but let them live their life in the way they must absolutely lead it. ~ Ray Bradbury
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Ray Bradbury
We believed in our grandmother's cooking more fervently than we believed in God. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Jonathan Safran Foer
I grew up in Harlem. My grandmother was one of the best cooks around, but the first thing she did on Sunday mornings when she started cooking a daylong meal was to take a big block of lard from the back of the refrigerator and throw it into the pan. I know how Hispanics buy their food, and it is not always nutritious. ~ Richard Carmona
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Richard Carmona
I associate so many fond memories with food. On that damp evening, along in a tiny restaurant smelling of mildew and lobster, I was 1,600 miles from everyone I knew and loved. After one bite of the pie, I closed my eyes, and taste transported me back to the warm, familiar comfort of my grandmother's kitchen. She always had a pie sitting on the kitchen counter, ready to serve, and a fresh pot of coffee brewing. ~ Debi Tolbert Duggar
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Debi Tolbert Duggar
There is a tradition in Southern cooking of recipes handed down for generations. And when I make my grandmother's strawberry pie - she is gone on now - I feel her right with me. ~ Kimberly Schlapman
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Kimberly Schlapman
The trip to Ireland ... ' her father was saying.
'Is to determine his legitimacy,' Wyndham confirmed. And then, with a morbidly jolly expression, he continued, 'It's going to be quite a party. Even my grandmother is going. ~ Julia Quinn
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Julia Quinn
Are you from Hapsburg?"
He seemed to think about it for a second or two, then gave a small nod.
"I thought I recognized the accent."
The scowl was back full force. "You are an expert on accents?" He managed to sound sarcastic.
"No. My Uncle Otto was from Hapsburg."
He blinked again, and the scowl wilted around the edges. "You are not German." He sounded very sure.
"My father's family is; from Baden-Baden on the edge of the Black Forest but Uncle Otto was from Hamburg.
"You said only your uncle had the accent."
"By the time I came along, most of the family, except for my grandmother, had been in this country so long there was no accent, but Uncle Otto never lost his."
"He's dead now." Olaf made it half question, half statement.
I nodded.
"How did he die?"
"Grandma Blake says Aunt Gertrude nagged him to death."
His lips twitched. "Women are tyrants if a man allows it." His voice was a touch softer now. ~ Laurell K. Hamilton
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Laurell K. Hamilton
Mira Levenson. Aged twelve. Looks, long dark shiny hair, dark brown eyes (almost black), brown skin. Beautiful. Favorite colour, copper orange, I think. Personality, clever, bright, serious, shy, funny without realizing it, holds back her thoughts, mystery girl, arty. What I've noticed: she's stronger than she thinks she is; she doesn't speak much ay school. What I know: she's got a loud laugh (when she lets it out). Her best friend is Millie Lockhart. She doesn't need Millie as much as she thinks she does. Her grandmother is dying and she loves her. She started talking in Pat Print's class. I know she doesn't know how much I think of her, how much I miss her if she's not around. What I think she thinks about me is that I'm a bit of a joker, but I'm deadly serious.

Grandmother Cooking quotes by Sita Brahmachari
I find myself getting so upset because I was never able to be a good mother for my daughter or a good grandmother for my granddaughter because I was always so sick. I only hope that I can live long enough to see my granddaughter graduate. ~ Dorothy Moore
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Dorothy Moore
Time is the only magic, he said, "And Marids swim through time like the sea. Think: if you hurt yourself, and I bandage it, and after weeks and weeks it gets well and there's no scar, that's not magic at all. But if you hurt yourself and I touch you and it heals in a moment, you'd call me magic before your skin closed. It's not magic to cook a feast, roasting and baking and frying for hours, but if you blink and it's steaming in front of you, it's a spell. If you work for what you want and save for it and plan it out just as precisely as you possibly can, it's not even surprising if you get it on the other side of a month or a year. But if you snap your fingers and it happens as soon as you want t, every wizard will want to know you socially. If you life straight through a hundred years and watch yourself unfold at one second per second, one hour per hour, that's just being alive. If you go faster, you're a time traveler. If you jump over your unfolding and see how it all comes out, that's fate. But's all healing and cooking and planning and living, just the same. The only difference is time. ~ Catherynne M. Valente
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Catherynne M. Valente
Tabasco sauce is to bachelor cooking what forgiveness is to sin. ~ P. J. O'Rourke
Grandmother Cooking quotes by P. J. O'Rourke
I love eating shabu-shabu in Japan - a kind of beef hotpot. But if you're talking about authentic, traditional food, then Italian cooking is one of the best in the world. ~ Andrea Bocelli
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Andrea Bocelli
I am now a mother and a grandmother, and I do not recall that I have ever ignored the claims of the nomadic button and the ceaseless call for sympathy, and the greatest demand on time and patience. My children and their children have been my closest thought, but from the first days of dawning individuality, I have longed unceasingly to make pictures of people ... to make likenesses that are biographies, to bring out in each photograph the essential temperament that is called, soul, humanity. ~ Gertrude Kasebier
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Gertrude Kasebier
My dear grandmother (who was a psychic in her own right and very well known in Kansas City, Missouri) used to say if you find someone who doesn't like animals, children, or music . . . run. ~ Sylvia Browne
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Sylvia Browne
So, where are the robots? We've been told for 40 years already that they're coming soon. Very soon they'll be doing everything for us. They'll be cooking, cleaning, buying things, shopping, building. But they aren't here. Meanwhile, we have illegal immigrants doing all the work, but we don't have any robots. ~ Hod Lipson
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Hod Lipson
By nature, I'm very care-taking. There's something really beautiful about cooking for someone and feeding them. ~ Eric Balfour
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Eric Balfour
My grandmother is a little Cuban woman who cooks all day and speaks Spanish. Your grandmother watches pay-per-view porn."
"She used to watch the Weather Channel, but she said there wasn't enough action."
-Ranger and Stephanie ~ Janet Evanovich
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Janet Evanovich
Breakfast cereals that come in the same colors as polyester leisure suits make oversleeping a virtue. ~ Fran Lebowitz
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Fran Lebowitz
She looked at the produce stalls, a row of jewels in a case, the colors more subtle in the winter, a Pantone display consisting only of greens, without the raspberries and plums of summer, the pumpkins of autumn. But if anything, the lack of variation allowed her mind to slow and settle, to see the small differences between the almost-greens and creamy whites of a cabbage and a cauliflower, to wake up the senses that had grown lazy and satisfied with the abundance of the previous eight months. Winter was a chromatic palate-cleanser, and she had always greeted it with the pleasure of a tart lemon sorbet, served in a chilled silver bowl between courses. ~ Erica Bauermeister
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Erica Bauermeister
An hour with your grandchildren can make you feel young again. Anything longer than that, and you start to age quickly. ~ Gene Perret
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Gene Perret
When I met Rachel Robinson for the first time, she is a regal woman, and she was like a grandmother in that first meeting. ~ Chadwick Boseman
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Chadwick Boseman
All millionaires love a baked apple. ~ Ronald Firbank
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Ronald Firbank
When I drew nigh the nameless city I knew it was accursed. I was travelling in a parched and terrible valley under the moon, and afar I saw it protruding uncannily above the sands as parts of a corpse may protrude from an ill-made grave. Fear spoke from the age-worn stones of this hoary survivor of the deluge, this great-grandmother of the eldest pyramid; and a viewless aura repelled me and bade me retreat from antique and sinister secrets that no man should see, and no man else had ever dared to see. ~ H.P. Lovecraft
Grandmother Cooking quotes by H.P. Lovecraft
Food, like anything else, lives in the physical world and obeys the laws of physics. When you whisk together some oil and a little bit of lemon juice - or, in other words, make mayonnaise - you are using the principles of physics and chemistry. Understanding how those principles affect cooking lets you cook better. ~ Nathan Myhrvold
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Nathan Myhrvold

Serves: 2 Cooking time: 30 minutes Ingredients: 4 overripe bananas, mashed 2 tablespoons coconut oil ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder ½ teaspoon allspice 2 tablespoons maple syrup ~ Amelia Sanders
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Amelia Sanders
Having a chronic illness, Molly thought, was like being invaded. Her grandmother back in Michigan used to tell about the day one of their cows got loose and wandered into the parlor, and the awful time they had getting her out. That was exactly what Molly's arthritis was like: as if some big old cow had got into her house and wouldn't go away. It just sat there, taking up space in her life and making everything more difficult, mooing loudly from time to time and making cow pies, and all she could do really was edge around it and put up with it.

When other people first became aware of the cow, they expressed concern and anxiety. They suggested strategies for getting the animal out of Molly's parlor: remedies and doctors and procedures, some mainstream and some New Age. They related anecdotes of friends who had removed their own cows in one way or another. But after a while they had exhausted their suggestions. Then they usually began to pretend that the cow wasn't there, and they preferred for Molly to go along with the pretense. ~ Alison Lurie
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Alison Lurie
She smiled at me sadly and gripped my hand. She had realized she had no need to hide from me what I had guessed straight away, that she had had a slight stroke. ~ Marcel Proust
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Marcel Proust
I'd walk over my own grandmother to re-elect Richard Nixon. ~ Charles Colson
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Charles Colson
Don't go thinking you can bounce me all over the ground just because I look like somebody's grandmother," the woman said dryly. "Some grandchildren need more raising than others, and I supply it," she grinned, showing very white teeth. -- Esa Bell, Shang Wildcat ~ Tamora Pierce
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Tamora Pierce
Number theorists are like lotus-eaters
having once tasted of this food they can never give it up. ~ Leopold Kronecker
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Leopold Kronecker
I feel fortunate to be part of the cooking community. We learn from each other. ~ Marcus Samuelsson
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Marcus Samuelsson
Pursue Meaning, Not Happiness

Feeling happy is like feeling warm. It's a state of being that feels good. It might sound counterintuitive but focusing directly on pursuing happiness isn't always the best approach to increasing it. This parallels the idea that focusing on reducing anxiety isn't always the best way to decrease it.
What's an alternative to focusing on increasing your happiness? A better idea is focusing on pursuing things that feel meaningful. I'm not necessarily suggesting Mother Teresa-type activities. What gives you a sense of meaning could be anything from cooking for your friends to puttering away on projects in your garage.
Pursuing meaning rather than happiness helps you feel calmer when you're not feeling happy in a particular moment. It smooths out the emotional bumps that come with mistakes, failures, and disappointments. There's research showing that stress tends to be harmful only if you believe that it's harmful and that you can't cope with it. It's easier to believe in your capacity to cope with stress if the stress is part of the bigger picture of building a meaningful life.
Experiment: What makes for a meaningful life from your perspective? Skip over what you think you should answer and identify what's actually true for you. ~ Alice Boyes
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Alice Boyes
Julia Bliss Flaherty, as Ivy now realized, was of the same stripe. Pinned down and obliged to justify herself, she would explain her actions in terms of some altruistic plan. And she might even believe it. But it wasn't that at all. She was like Ivy's grandmother. If you paid fealty to her, she would favor you, and your reputation and power would grow among all the others who did likewise. ~ Neal Stephenson
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Neal Stephenson
One thing that improved my cooking skills was being a poor student in California ... If you don't have much money, you have to learn to cook. ~ Diane Mott Davidson
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Diane Mott Davidson
Ah yes, you like to cook, don't you?
well, i used to. you need real dedication. fresh ingredients, a discerning palate, an eye for presentation. it's not a modern art. good cooking has hardly evolved since the nineteenth century. ~ Haruki Murakami
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Haruki Murakami
One of the biggest challenges in the past for me in working on the networks was that audiences have grown accustomed to television being something that keeps you company-background music, something that you have on while you're flipping through a magazine, cooking dinner, talking on the phone, putting the kids to bed. ~ Aaron Sorkin
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Aaron Sorkin
He ducked his head and started walking. "Go away."

"I don't know why I was worried," Hunter said from behind him. "Considering you only seem to know how to run and hide."

Gabriel swung around and hit him.

Or he tried to. Hunter had some serious military training, and he deflected the blow easily.

But Gabriel was no stranger to fighting dirty. He caught Hunter with a solid punch to the stomach.

Hunter got him in the jaw.

And then they were fighting in earnest.

Christ, it felt fantastic to drive his fist into something. Especially when Hunter fought back with enough force to really make it worth it. Enough force that Gabriel started to wonder if this would turn into a test of endurance.

Enough force that Gabriel started to wonder if he could win.

His back slammed into the concrete wall of the mall. Breath rushed out of his lungs. He braced against the wall to throw Hunter off, getting enough leverage to shove the other boy to the ground. He followed him down to pin him there.

"Whoa, hold up," Hunter said, breathless. He made his hands into a T. "If I tear my clothes, my grandmother will shit a brick."

Gabriel stared down at him, unsure whether to let him go.

Then he caught the glint of light on steel under Hunter's jacket.

"You are one crazy bastard. You really did come armed."

"Sure."

"You had a gun and you still f ~ Brigid Kemmerer
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Brigid Kemmerer
My job has changed over the years, 22 years roughly I've been cooking professionally. When I was younger, I aspired to be the star player. Now, it's more I like to sit in the dugout and make sure the team wins the game. ~ Wylie Dufresne
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Wylie Dufresne
Hockey and cooking are similar in so many ways, especially if you are a player-coach, the guy in charge on the ice, a role I would closely relate to that of a chef in the kitchen - they are both contact sports.

You've gotta keep your head up, keep moving and communicate well. Even though you might be the leader in the kitchen or on the ice, you need to understand that that you're part of a working machine and that machine stops working if one of the pieces isn't working in unison with the others. I learned from a very young age the importance of being part of this team dynamic and how hard work can take you to so many different places.

(Chef Duane Keller) ~ Chris Hill
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Chris Hill
Heidi loudly wailed, Oh I want to go home. What the poor snowhopper will do without me? Grandmother is waiting for me everyday. Poor Thistlefinch gets blows if Peter gets no cheese, and I must see the sun again when he says good-night to the mountains. How the eagle would screech if he saw all the people here in Frankfurt. ~ Johanna Spyri
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Johanna Spyri
Regret [10w]
Regret's like a microwave
cooking you from the inside out. ~ Beryl Dov
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Beryl Dov
The proliferation of support groups suggests to me that too many Americans are growing up in homes that do not contain a grandmother. A home without a grandmother is like an egg without salt ... The emotionally satisfying discussions that take place in Chronic Pain Outreach and Depression Resources are simply updated versions of the grandmotherly practice of hanging crepe. We could eliminate much of the isolation that support groups exist to fill and save the "traditional family" that everybody is so worried about if more couples took their aging parents to live with them. ~ Florence King
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Florence King
You can't, if you can't feel it, if it never
Rises from the soul, and sways
The heart of every single hearer,
With deepest power, in simple ways.
You'll sit forever, gluing things together,
Cooking up a stew from other's scraps,
Blowing on a miserable fire,
Made from your heap of dying ash.
Let apes and children praise your art,
If their admiration's to your taste,
But you'll never speak from heart to heart,
Unless it rises up from your heart's space. ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Grandmother Cooking quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
If you're cooking for someone important - whether it's your boss or a date - never try a new recipe and a new ingredient at the same time. ~ Marcus Samuelsson
