I am apt to think, if we knew what it was to be an angel for one hour, we should return to this world, though it were to sit on the brightest throne in it, with vastly more loathing and reluctance than we would now descend into a loathsome dungeon or sepulchre. ~ George Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
Doth the Reality of sensible things consist in being perceived? or, is it something distinct from their being perceived, and that bears no relation to the mind? ~ George Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
The universities are an absolute wreck right now, because for decades, any graduate student in the humanities who had independent thinking was driven out. There was no way to survive without memorizing all these stupid bromides with this referential bowing to these over-inflated figures like Lacan, Derrida, Foucault, and so on. Basically, it's been a tyranny in the humanities, because the professors who are now my age – who are the baby boomer professors, who made their careers on the back of Foucault and so on – are determined that that survive. So you have a kind of vampirism going on.

So I've been getting letters for 25 years since Sexual Personae was released in 1990, from refugees from the graduate schools. It's been a terrible loss. One of my favorite letters was early on: a woman wrote to me, she was painting houses in St. Louis, she said that she had wanted a career as a literature professor and had gone into the graduate program in comparative literature at Berkeley. And finally, she was forced to drop out because, she said, every time she would express enthusiasm for a work they were studying in the seminar, everyone would look at her as if she had in some way created a terrible error of taste. I thought, 'Oh my God', see that's what's been going on – a pretentious style of superiority to the text.

[When asked what can change this]: Rebellion! Rebellion by the grad students. This is what I'm trying to foment. We absolutely need someone to stand ~ Camille Paglia
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Camille Paglia
She understood that some basic decency would keep him from ever attaining a position of power or wealth, and after their move to Berkeley had made peace with her fate. ~ Marco Vassi
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Marco Vassi
Esse est percipi, to be is to be perceived, said good old Berkeley; but, according to most philosophers, he was wrong. Yet, obviously, there are things for which the adage holds. Perception, trivially, to begin with. If elements of conscious awareness
pains, tickles, feelings of heat and cold, sensory qualia of colors, sounds, and the like
have any existence, it must consist in their being perceived by a subject ... This shows, of course, that such experiences are epiphenomenal, at least with respect to the physical world. ~ Zeno Vendler
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Zeno Vendler
I want to direct films, because I am a painter and a sculptor and I've done a lot of writing. ~ Xander Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Xander Berkeley
Few men think; yet all have opinions. ~ George Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
When I came to Berkeley, I met all these Nobel laureates and I got to know that they were regular people. They were very smart and very motivated and worked very hard, but they were still humans, whereas before they were kind of mythical creatures to me. ~ George Smoot
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Smoot
Dear Lord, I've been asked, nay commanded, to thank Thee for the Christmas turkey before us ... a turkey which was no doubt a lively, intelligent bird ... a social being ... capable of actual affection ... nuzzling its young with almost human- like compassion. Anyway, it's dead and we're gonna eat it. Please give our respects to its family ... ~ Berkeley Breathed
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Berkeley Breathed
It isn't that information is exploding, but accessibility is. There's just about as much information this year as there was last year; it's been growing at a steady rate. It's just that now it's so much more accessible because of information technology. The consensus is that a Web crawler could get to a terabyte of publicly accesible HTML. A terabyte is about a million books. the UC Berkeley library has about 8 million books, and the Library of Congress has 20 million books. ~ Hal Varian
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Hal Varian
Quinn Berkeley is unlike anyone I have ever met. He is the eighth wonder of the world. Scrap that-he is my first and only wonder of the world. ~ Monica James
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Monica James
A man needs no arguments to make him discern and approve what is beautiful: it strikes at first sight, and attracts without a reason. And as this beauty is found in the shape and form of corporeal things, so also is there analogous to it a beauty of another kind, an order, a symmetry, and comeliness in the moral world. And as the eye perceiveth the one, so the mind doth by a certain interior sense perceive the other, which sense, talent, or faculty, is ever quickest and purest in the noblest minds. ~ George Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
Human-like species will not exist elsewhere in the universe, unless they live exactly in an earth-like environment. ~ Joey Lawsin
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Joey Lawsin
To me it seems that liberty and virtue were made for each other. If any man wish to enslave his country, nothing is a fitter preparative than vice; and nothing leads to vice so surely as irreligion. ~ George Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
The early 1960s, when I started my graduate studies at UC Berkeley, were a period of experimental supremacy and theoretical impotence. ~ David Gross
Genzel Berkeley quotes by David Gross
Truth is the cry of all, but the game of few. ~ George Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
The biophilia hypothesis is not your run-of-the-mill Berkeley/Al Gore/Eat Your Spinach environmentalism. It does not appeal directly to our sense of stewardship or responsibility. It appeals to a much more base, and common, human proclivity: selfishness. It says, in effect, protect the environment because it will make you happy. For a country like the United States, with the word "happiness" in its founding document, you'd think environmentalists would have latched on to biophilia a long time ago. ~ Eric Weiner
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Eric Weiner
The campus response was now swift and punitive and overwhelming. The days of peaceful sit-ins had ended, even though two buildings were more-or-less peacefully occupied now. The illusion that Stanhope College would be spared the violence of the cities of the mid-sixties and the campuses such as Berkeley Wisconsin and Columbia, to name a few, was exposed. ~ Norman Giddan
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Norman Giddan
If we admit a thing so extraordinary as the creation of this world, it should seem that we admit something strange, and odd, and new to human apprehension, beyond any other miracle whatsoever. ~ George Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
My parents met when they were graduate students at UC Berkeley in the 1960s. They were both active in the civil-rights movement. ~ Kamala Harris
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Kamala Harris
In short, if there were external bodies, it is impossible we should ever come to know it; and if there were not, we might have the very same reasons to think there were that we have now. ~ George Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
My parents are Italian and British. They live in Berkeley now - we all moved there four years ago. ~ Claire Forlani
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Claire Forlani
It's exciting that you've got an entire season to experience 24 hours of highly dramatically charged human experience. It allows for the close inspection of minutiae in behaviour. ~ Xander Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Xander Berkeley
As he walked up past the red and green tennis courts in east Berkeley and saw the swing of the women's hair in the breeze, the crisp strokes that sent the ball over the net like a little bone-white planetoid, it occurred to him that there was still a last chance for a pair of heavenly arms to reach out to him and save him. ~ William T. Vollmann
Genzel Berkeley quotes by William T. Vollmann
HE who says there is no such thing as an honest man, you may be sure is himself a knave. ~ George Bishop Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Bishop Berkeley
What then? Are we only to buy the books that we read? The question has merely to be thus bluntly put, and it answers itself. All impassioned bookmen, except a few who devote their whole lives to reading, have rows of books on their shelves which they have never read, and which they never will read. I know that I have hundreds such. My eye rests on the works of Berkeley in three volumes, with a preface by the Right Honourable Arthur James Balfour. I cannot conceive the circumstances under which I shall ever read Berkeley; but I do not regret having bought him in a good edition, and I would buy him again if I had him not; for when I look at him some of his virtue passes into me; I am the better for him. A certain aroma of philosophy informs my soul, and I am less crude than I should otherwise be. This is not fancy, but fact.

"Taking Berkeley simply as an instance, I will utilise him a little further. I ought to have read Berkeley, you say; just as I ought to have read Spenser, Ben Jonson, George Eliot, Victor Hugo. Not at all. There is no 'ought' about it. If the mass of obtainable first-class literature were, as it was perhaps a century ago, not too large to be assimilated by a man of ordinary limited leisure _in_ his leisure and during the first half of his life, then possibly there might be an 'ought' about it. But the mass has grown unmanageable, even by those robust professional readers who can 'grapple with whole libraries.' And I am not a prof ~ Arnold Bennett
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Arnold Bennett
We are Bay Aryans from Berkeley: prepare to be reengineered in an attractive range of color schemes for your safety and comfort! ~ Charles Stross
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Charles Stross
Colour, Figure, Motion, Extension and the like, considered only so many Sensations in the Mind, are perfectly known, there being nothing in them which is not perceived. But if they are looked on as notes or Images, referred to Things or Archetypes existing without the Mind, then are we involved all in Scepticism. ~ George Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
The term "escalation of commitment" was first coined by Barry Staw, a business professor at the University of California, Berkeley.4 It's defined as a decision-making pattern in which a person - for our purposes, a business leader - continues to support or believe in a strategy even after it has continually failed. Escalation of commitment is often described as the inability to let go, or as an obsessive need to try to succeed even when failure is inevitable. ~ Laurence G. Weinzimmer
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Laurence G. Weinzimmer
A mind is a terrible thing. All this evolution nonsense is making me feel like a complete APE! ~ Berkeley Breathed
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Berkeley Breathed
I grew up in Berkeley and my parents were hippies, obviously, since my name's 'Jorma.' I didn't watch much television growing up because they weren't into it at all. ~ Jorma Taccone
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Jorma Taccone
At the very top state institutions, like UCLA, Berkeley and the University of Texas, however, the trend of downward minority enrollment remains persistent and discouraging. ~ Adam Schiff
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Adam Schiff
Despite what they tell you, there are simply no moral absolutes in a complex world. ~ Berkeley Breathed
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Berkeley Breathed

Genzel Berkeley quotes by Simon Singh
They hired a PhD student from the statistics department at the University of California at Berkeley to help them, but he quit after they asked him to study the market for pork belly futures. "It turned out that he was a vegetarian," said Jamie. "He had a problem with capitalism in general, but the pork bellies pushed him over the edge. ~ Michael Lewis
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Michael Lewis
I became a clown when these docs came to the house in Berkeley and asked me to come cheer up kids. I'd just had my third spinal fusion and I was looking for something to take my mind off the pain I was in. ~ Wavy Gravy
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Wavy Gravy
It won't happen anytime soon, don't worry," Berkeley says, amused. "We still have two albums left on our contract, and like I said before, the band's a big business - it supports a lot of people - we're not going anywhere."

"Well, that's a relief. You scared me. I was about to ask if you wouldn't mind autographing my bra so I'd have something to remember you by."

He takes his time responding, his eyes slowly looking me up and down. "But you're not wearing a bra," he finally points out. ~ Katie Delahanty
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Katie Delahanty
In San Francisco, most of the older activists, especially at Berkeley, were very hostile towards punks. The music, certainly, wasn't nice and mellow for them, and neither was our look or our attitude. While in Vancouver, the two most important early punk bands, D.O.A. and the Subhumans, were both managed by former yippie activists, who saw this as a logical extension of what they were already doing. ~ Jello Biafra
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Jello Biafra
If nothing is serious anymore, then there's nothing to satirize. ~ Berkeley Breathed
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Berkeley Breathed
...I began pulling out old pictures and yearbooks from our Los Angeles high schools and UC Berkeley. Suddenly there we were, thousands of trim-haired, neatly-dressed, conservative-looking youngsters, with perky, forced smiles, encased in identical inch by inch-and-a-quarter boxes for our children to snicker at. Only they did not snicker.
"Mom, this isn't the 60s, is it? ~ Elise Frances Miller
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Elise Frances Miller
disability rights and to demand full access. Ed Roberts and others at the University of California Berkeley in the 1960s forced the university to admit them, to provide access to classes and other activities, and to provide the support ~ Julie K. Silver
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Julie K. Silver
My filmmaking style of remixing came out of necessity. When I was a film theory student at UC Berkeley in the early 1990s, there were no film production facilities. The only way I learned to tell stories on film was by re-cutting and splicing together celluloid of old movies, early animated films, home films, sound slug - anything I could get my hands on. ~ Elisa Kreisinger
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Elisa Kreisinger
this is a girl who did drugs, who fucked her high school teacher, who chose Berkeley over Stanford. Maybe she really could be one of us. ~ Jeffrey Toobin
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Jeffrey Toobin
Westward the course of empire takes its way; The four first acts already past, A fifth shall close the drama with the day: Time's noblest offspring is the last. ~ George Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
Bloom County was set in a tidy, rural environment probably because of Harper Lee's 'To Kill a Mockingbird.' ~ Berkeley Breathed
Genzel Berkeley quotes by Berkeley Breathed
I imagine that thinking is the great desideratum of the present age; and the cause of whatever is done amiss may justly be reckoned the general neglect of education in those who need it most, the people of fashion. What can be expected where those who have the most influence have the least sense, and those who are sure to be followed set the worst examples? ~ George Berkeley
Genzel Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
If you are bored with Berkeley, you are bored with life. ~ Clark Kerr
