Gansett Island quotes by Frank McCourt
Mathematics catalogues everything that is not self-contradictory; within that vast inventory, physics is an island of structures rich enough to contain their own beholders. ~ Greg Egan
Gansett Island quotes by Greg Egan

Cole grasped a handful of vials and syringes with one hand and dumped them on the island in front of me. They rolled and whirled in misshapen circles on the counter surface. "Here are our options."
My ears rang. "We have more than one?"
"Three, precisely," Cole said. He pointed to each in turn. "That one makes you a wolf. That one makes me a wolf. That one gives us both seizures. ~ Maggie Stiefvater
Gansett Island quotes by Maggie Stiefvater
Not that I was incapable of friendship. 'Don't be shy', the teachers coaxed. I was not shy, only extremely choosy. And Denise shone like a diamond. If you had to ask me to define paradise, I would have said a desert island which Denise could visit, on a boat. ~ Anneli Rufus
Gansett Island quotes by Anneli Rufus
I have dreamt that all my teeth fell out but my tongue lived to tell the tale
pg. 65// A Coney Island of the Mind ~ Lawrence Ferlinghetti
Gansett Island quotes by Lawrence Ferlinghetti
Have I gotten everything right? I doubt it. Not even the great Daniel Defoe did that; in Robinson Crusoe, our hero strips naked, swims out to the ship he has recently escaped....and then fills up his pockets with items he will need to stay alive on his desert island. ~ Stephen King
Gansett Island quotes by Stephen King
I could have spoken from Rhode Island where I have been staying ... But I felt that, in speaking from the house of Lincoln, of Jackson, and of Wilson, my words would better convey both the sadness I feel in the action I was compelled today to make and the firmness with which I intend to pursue this course until the orders of the federal court at Little Rock can be executed without unlawful interference. (On sending troops to enforce integration in Little Rock AR High School) ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower
Gansett Island quotes by Dwight D. Eisenhower
Voyaging great distances
through forests, from island to island, across plains and into the mountains
is all about finding ourselves. ~ Tim Lebbon
Gansett Island quotes by Tim Lebbon
From Arawaks he later met on Hispaniola (the island of the Dominican Republic and Haiti) he learned of other people to the south, whom the Spanish called the Cariba or Caniba, from which we get the words "Caribbean" and "cannibal. ~ Lincoln Paine
Gansett Island quotes by Lincoln Paine
I'd been awake for thirty-six hours and driving for ten. Restless weeks, sleepless nights, and the decision stole into me like a thief. I never planned to go back to North Carolina- I'd buried it- but I blinked and found my hands on the wheel, Manhattan a sinking island to the north. I wore a week-old beard and three day denim, felt stretched by an edginess that bordered on pain, but no one here would fail to recognize me. That's what home was all about, for good or bad. ~ John Hart
Gansett Island quotes by John Hart
Our town was christened Buyan, after the legend of a Slavic island that appeared, and disappeared, at will. That would later seem an eerie, and disconcerting, premonition. ~ A.B. Shepherd
Gansett Island quotes by A.B. Shepherd
An armchair is always an armchair, to the modern child, never a ship, never a desert island. The pattern on the wall are patterns; not characters whose faces change at dusk ... The trouble is, the children have no imagination. They are sweet, and have carefree, honest eyes; but they have not any magic in their day. The magic has all gone ... ~ Daphne Du Maurier
Gansett Island quotes by Daphne Du Maurier
[T.J.] If she had gotten sick, the only thing I could have done was watch her suffer. Bury her next to Mick when she died. I didn't know if I could make it without her. The sound of her voice, her smile, her– those were the things that made living on the island bearable. I held her a little tighter and thought if she woke up I might tell her that. She didn't though. She sighed in her sleep, and eventually I drifted off. ~ Tracey Garvis Graves
Gansett Island quotes by Tracey Garvis Graves
Our knowledge is a little island in a great ocean of nonknowledge. ~ Isaac Bashevis Singer
Gansett Island quotes by Isaac Bashevis Singer
Many years ago a friend assured me that we are all islands. Once in a while, another island travels along with us for a short stretch, and then it goes away, it slips off to some other place, and we never see each other again. Life is nothing more than a system of good-byes. Of releases. Of mutilations. The truth is we are incapable of giving anyone what they really need. ~ Luis Eduardo Reyes
Gansett Island quotes by Luis Eduardo Reyes
Nonfiction writers are second-class citizens, the Ellis Island of literature. We just can't quite get in. And yes, it pisses me off. ~ William Styron
Gansett Island quotes by William Styron
The three most celebrated doctors on the island have been to see me. One sniffed at what I spat, the second tapped where I spat from, and the third sounded me and listened as I spat. The first said I was dead, the second that I was dying and the third that I'm going to die. ~ Frederic Chopin
Gansett Island quotes by Frederic Chopin
A self does not amount to much, but no self is an island; each exists in a fabric of relations that is now more complex and mobile than ever before. ~ Jean Francois Lyotard
Gansett Island quotes by Jean Francois Lyotard
I'm warning you. I'm going to get waxy. D'you see? You're not wanted. Understand? We are going to have fun on this island. Understand? We are going to have fun on this island! So don't try it on, my poor misguided boy, or else
Simon found he was looking into a vast mouth. There was blackness within, a blackness that spread. ~ William Golding
Gansett Island quotes by William Golding
Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation
Delivered on December 8, 1941
Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Senate, and of the House of Representatives:
Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.
Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.
It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American shi ~ Franklin D. Roosevelt
Gansett Island quotes by Franklin D. Roosevelt
He was an island of sanity in a household of anything-goes chaos. I never felt like I didn't fit in when he was around, because we were our own group. He and I. ~ Kate Brauning
Gansett Island quotes by Kate Brauning
Cat," said Peterkin, turning his head a little on one side, "I love you. ~ R.M. Ballantyne
Gansett Island quotes by R.M. Ballantyne
But of course, no family is an island unto itself. It is always part of a larger culture: a community. ~ Richard C. Morais
Gansett Island quotes by Richard C. Morais
Hope and courage and risk dwell inside of us on an uncharted island and if we learn to look for it and tap into it, our possibilities are endless. ~ Katie Kacvinsky
Gansett Island quotes by Katie Kacvinsky
Later, the child climbs down from her mother's knee and clambers up onto Tom. He holds her wordlessly, trying to imprint everything about her: the smell of her hair, the softness of her skin, the shape of her tiny fingers, the sound of her breath as she puts her face so close to his.
The island swims away from them, fading into an ever more miniature version of itself, until it is just a flash of memory, held differently, imperfectly by each passenger. Tom watches Isabel, waits for her to return his glance, longs for her to give him one of the old smiles that used to remind him of Janus Light – a fixed, reliable point in the world, which meant he was never lost. But the flame has gone out – her face seems uninhabited now. ~ M. L. Stedman - The Light Between Oceans
Gansett Island quotes by M. L. Stedman - The Light Between Oceans
Or I would be the rain itself, wreathing over the island, mingling in the quiet of moist places, filling its pores with its saturated breaths. And I would be the wind, whispering through the tangled woods, running airy fingers over the island's face, tingling in the chill of concealed places, sighing secrets in the dawn. And I would be the light, flinging over the island, covering it with flash and shadow, shining on rocks and pools, softening to a touch in the glow of dusk. If I were the rain and wind and light, I would encircle the island like the sky surrounding earth, flood through it like a heart driven pulse, shine from inside it like a star in flames, burn away to blackness in the closed eyes of its night. There are so many ways I could love this island, if I were the rain. ~ Richard Nelson
Gansett Island quotes by Richard Nelson
I've always felt England was a great place for a comic to work. It's an island and the audience can't run very far. ~ Bob Hope
Gansett Island quotes by Bob Hope
What is New York? A straightforward answer: seven million people crushed onto an island originally settled by the Dutch. But it's more than that. These are seven million who were, mainly, not even born here. ~ Bill Buford
Gansett Island quotes by Bill Buford
He could read two books to my one, but he preferred the magic of his own inventions. He could add and subtract faster than lightning, but he preferred his own twilight world, a world where babies slept, waiting to be gathered like morning lilies. He was slowly talking himself to sleep and taking me with him, but in the quietness of his foggy island there rose the faded image of gray house with sad brown doors. ~ Harper Lee
Gansett Island quotes by Harper Lee
I called this island Bad Humored Island, as we were in a bad humor. ~ John Bakeless
Gansett Island quotes by John Bakeless
