Demons frighten us because we set ourselves up to be frightened. We are overly attached to our reputations and possessions. When we love and desire what we should be rejecting, we are in conflict with our true selves. That's when the negative energies catch us and use our weapons against us. Instead of taking up what we have to defend ourselves, we put our swords in the hands of our enemies and make them attack us. ~ Teresa Giudice
Frightened quotes by Teresa Giudice
We suddenly saw how people reacted in the event of massive social upheaval, and the way that the little problems in your life don't go away. You don't stop being frightened of spiders just because the world's blown up. ~ Simon Pegg
Frightened quotes by Simon Pegg
There are two things in this life people cannot touch", Edward finally said, staring deep into my frightened eyes."Me and my family."

Confused by his statement I glanced up at him,"I'm neither."

"Your right", he confirmed reaching out to clasp my hand again, giving them an admant squeeze.
"You're both.Your a part of me and one day I hope you'll be apart of my family as well. ~ Hoodfabulous
Frightened quotes by Hoodfabulous
Aye," the prince said. "I told the story to Ser Balon, but not all of it. As the children splashed in the pools, Daenerys watched from amongst the orange trees, and a realization came to her. She could not tell the highborn from the low. Naked, they were only children. All innocent, all vulnerable, all deserving of long life, love, protection. "There is your realm," she told her son and heir, "remember them, on everything you do." My own mother said those same words to me when I was old enough to leave the pools. It is an easy thing for a prince to call the spears, but in the end the children pay the price. For their sake, the wise prince will wage non war without good cause, nor any war he cannot hope to win.
"I am not blind, nor deaf. I know that you all believe me weak, frightened, feeble. Your father knew me better. Oberyn was ever the viper. Deadly, dangerous, unpredictable. No man dared tread on him. I was the grass. Pleasant, complaisant, sweet-smelling, swaying with every breeze. Who fears to walk upon the grass? But it is the grass that hides the viper from his enemies and shelters him until he strikes. Your father and I worked more closely than you know...but now he is gone. The question is, can I trust his daughters to serve me in his place? ~ George R.R. Martin
Frightened quotes by George R.R. Martin
Listen, I wanted to say, I don't need your judgment, okay? I have enough to deal with without you contributing, so can we just get on with this so I can get out of here?
But I couldn't form the words. Dr. Johnson viewed me as a child, and somehow, under his contemptuous gaze, I had regressed to one. I was frightened and shy, and it was all I could do to answer his questions and count the seconds until the end of the visit. ~ Jessica Verdi
Frightened quotes by Jessica Verdi
As for the Republicans
how can one regard seriously a frightened, greedy, nostalgic huddle of tradesmen and lucky idlers who shut their eyes to history and science, steel their emotions against decent human sympathy, cling to sordid and provincial ideals exalting sheer acquisitiveness and condoning artificial hardship for the non-materially-shrewd, dwell smugly and sentimentally in a distorted dream-cosmos of outmoded phrases and principles and attitudes based on the bygone agricultural-handicraft world, and revel in (consciously or unconsciously) mendacious assumptions (such as the notion that real liberty is synonymous with the single detail of unrestricted economic license or that a rational planning of resource-distribution would contravene some vague and mystical 'American heritage' ... ) utterly contrary to fact and without the slightest foundation in human experience? Intellectually, the Republican idea deserves the tolerance and respect one gives to the dead. ~ H.P. Lovecraft
Frightened quotes by H.P. Lovecraft
My hands felt electrically charged. My blood was ready to burst from my veins and my heart was beating a manic rhythm. I was frightened out of my wits but I was catching a familiar, addictive adrenaline wave. I was ready to taunt the reaper. ~ Bobby Adair
Frightened quotes by Bobby Adair
It's what's buried deep inside that frightens me because it's broken, like a shattered mirror. ~ Jessica Sorensen
Frightened quotes by Jessica Sorensen
Mother didn't understand that children aren't frightened by stories; that their lives are full of far more frightening things than those contained in fairy tales. ~ Kate Morton
Frightened quotes by Kate Morton
It's good to be a little frightened. It's good to respect your opponent. It keeps you sharp. In the fight game, the head rules the heart. But in the end the heart is the boss. ~ Bryce Courtenay
Frightened quotes by Bryce Courtenay
Children delight in poetry if they are not frightened away by adults' fear of poetry. ~ Mary Crow
Frightened quotes by Mary Crow
If you've a notion of what man's heart is, wouldn't you say that maybe the whole effort of man on earth to build a civilization is simply man's frantic and frightened attempt to hide himself from himself? That there is a part of man that man wants to reject? That man wants to keep from knowing what he is? That he wants to protect himself from seeing that he is something awful? And that this 'awful' part of himself might not be as awful as he thinks, but he finds it too strange and he does not know what to do with it? We talk about what to do with the atom bomb ... But man's heart, his spirit is the deadliest thing in creation. Are not all cultures and civilizations just screens which men have used to divide themselves, to put between that part of themselves which they are afraid of and that part of themselves which they wish, in their deep timidity, to try to preserve? Are not all of man's efforts at order an attempt to still man's fear of himself? ~ Richard Wright
Frightened quotes by Richard Wright
When I was a child and they burned me out of my home, I was frightened and I ran away. Eventually I ran far away. It was to a place called France. Many of you have been there, and many have not. But I must tell you, ladies and gentlemen, in that country I never feared. It was like a fairyland place. ~ Josephine Baker
Frightened quotes by Josephine Baker
I discovered early in life that living frightened me when I was sober. ~ Eugene O'Neill
Frightened quotes by Eugene O'Neill
I think America has dealt with - I mean, this is simplistic, and of course I don't live in America - but the impression I get is that there is not a kind of obligation to dislike those who are better off or be frightened of those who are worse off. ~ Julian Fellowes
Frightened quotes by Julian Fellowes
There are many things you have never done," Rowl responded. "To be frightened of them is of no use to you. ~ Jim Butcher
Frightened quotes by Jim Butcher
Though I no longer liked him or respected him, the thought of his disapproval frightened me. ~ Walter Kirn
Frightened quotes by Walter Kirn
Well,' Frederick had said, 'I will see what can be arranged, Archie. But I will not have the girl frightened or compromised.'
'You sound like a grandfather who has raised fifteen daughters and is now starting on his granddaughters, Freddie,' Lord Archibald had said. 'It is most disconcerting. ~ Mary Balogh
Frightened quotes by Mary Balogh
Nice hair.' Olivier turned to Clara, hoping to break the tension.
'Thank you.' Clara ran her hands through it, making it stand on end as though she'd just had a scare.
'You're right.' Olivier turned to Myrna. 'She looks like a frightened doughboy from the trenches of Vimy. Not many people could carry off that look. Very bold, very new millennium. I salute you.'
Clara narrowed her eyes and glared at Myrna whose smile went from ear to ear. ~ Louise Penny
Frightened quotes by Louise Penny
It's often the most frightened of folk who do the greatest deeds. ~ Richard A. Knaak
Frightened quotes by Richard A. Knaak
It's one of the terrors of old age that your body is not your friend. Or to be out on the street and be frightened of someone because you're not in good shape and can't do anything about it. ~ Israel Horovitz
Frightened quotes by Israel Horovitz
A white van drove slowly - as slowly as only an inexperienced and frightened driver could go
down San Pablo Avenue. It came to a stop at a distance, and Caine found himself hoping it was
trouble. Trouble he could handle. A fight would be a wonderful relief from the tedium. ~ Michael Grant
Frightened quotes by Michael Grant
The mind leaps, and leaps perhaps with a sort of elation, through the immensities of space, but the spirit, frightened and cold, longs to have once more above its head the inverted bowl beyond which may lie whatever paradise its desires may create. ~ Joseph Wood Krutch
Frightened quotes by Joseph Wood Krutch
I was physically revolted by and secretly frightened of those round moronic eyes, the pancake face, and orangeworms hair. ~ Toni Morrison
Frightened quotes by Toni Morrison
Is it unhealthy if you accept it? Not because you're frightened or vulnerable, but because you love them immeasurably. ~ Jodi Ellen Malpas
Frightened quotes by Jodi Ellen Malpas
I'm not frightened by the advent of intelligent machines. It's the sarcastic ones that worry me. ~ Quentin R. Bufogle
Frightened quotes by Quentin R. Bufogle
The Gray Man seemed to be considering. Usually everyone else looked frightened by this point of this conversation, but it was possible the Gray Man didn't have emotions. ~ Maggie Stiefvater
Frightened quotes by Maggie Stiefvater
Why does an apple crumble at the sight of cream? ~ Anthony T. Hincks
Frightened quotes by Anthony T. Hincks
Defense mechanisms protect us. Fortresses isolate us. And far too often we begin with the former and end up constructing the latter. ~ Craig D. Lounsbrough
Frightened quotes by Craig D. Lounsbrough
The first language humans had was gestures. There was nothing primitive about this language that flowed from people's hands, nothing we say now that could not be said in the endless array of movements possible with the fine bones of the fingers and wrists. The gestures were complex and subtle, involving a delicacy of motion that has since been lost completely.

During the Age of Silence, people communicated more, not less. Basic survival demanded that the hands were almost never still, and so it was only during sleep (and sometimes not even then) that people were not saying something or other. No distinction was made between the gestures of language and the gestures of life. The labor of building a house, say, or preparing a meal was no less an expression than making the sign for I love you or I feel serious. When a hand was used to shield one's face when frightened by a loud noise something was being said, and when fingers were used to pick up what someone else had dropped something was being said; and even when the hands were at rest, that, too, was saying something. Naturally, there were misunderstandings. There were times when a finger might have been lifted to scratch a nose, and if casual eye contact was made with one's lover just then, the lover might accidentally take it to be the gesture, not at all dissimilar, for Now I realize I was wrong to love you. These mistakes were heartbreaking. And yet, because people knew how easily they could happen, because th ~ Nicole Krauss
Frightened quotes by Nicole Krauss
And when the man who commanded a nuclear arsenal and the greatest military in history was frightened, it meant that something other than human intervention was required. That, unfortunately, was part of Zach's job every day now. That was where Nathaniel Cade came in ~ Christopher Farnsworth
Frightened quotes by Christopher Farnsworth
I'm a bit frightened of the idea of a full facelift because, when you look in the mirror, you want to look like yourself. ~ Carol Vorderman
Frightened quotes by Carol Vorderman
It came to Morgan that Nicholas must have been a beaten boy, too, and that meant Grampa Earp was, as well. Which was no surprise, really, when Morg thought about that mean old man. How many sons were in that chain? Morgan wondered, and grief gave way to the pride he'd felt the day his brother Wyatt stood up to his first bully and put an end to a chain of vengeful, frightened, beaten boys. ~ Mary Doria Russell
Frightened quotes by Mary Doria Russell
flight of confusions and disturbances would flutter across her cheeks like frightened birds. ~ Magda Szubanski
Frightened quotes by Magda Szubanski
And then came the nineties, when management, suddenly frightened that they had ceded control to the players, sought to restore baseball's profitability by 'running the game like a business.' ~ John Thorn
Frightened quotes by John Thorn
You cannot know how frightened gods are of pain. There is nothing more foreign to them, and so nothing they ache more deeply to see. ~ Madeline Miller
Frightened quotes by Madeline Miller
Don't be frightened by your beauty, you haven't until now, known you had it, and so you're uncorrupted by it. You can never take any credit for it, or make it your aim. But it would be as much deceit to deny your beauty or tell yourself that what you see is not you. Beauty hovers around you wherever you go, which is why these two poor young men chase after you when you're covered in dirt and dressed in rags. Not beauty of the face or form. Something eternal. This beauty that comes from dresses and jewels is somewhat of an illusion. But even illusion has its place. And that's what parties and dancing are for. ~ Julie Berry
Frightened quotes by Julie Berry
Hatred has its pleasures. It is therefore often the compensation by
which a frightened man reimburses himself for the miseries of Fear. The more he fears, the more he will hate. - Screwtape ~ C.S. Lewis
Frightened quotes by C.S. Lewis
There are some men who are frightened by strong women and some men who are nurtured by them and feel nervous, with weak clinging vines. And I am very much of the latter category. ~ Julian Fellowes
Frightened quotes by Julian Fellowes
Christianity has such a contemptible opinion of human nature that it does not believe a man can tell the truth unless frightened by a belief in god. No lower opinion of the human race has ever been expressed. ~ Robert Green Ingersoll
Frightened quotes by Robert Green Ingersoll
When I asked [my dad why the sky was blue] he said it was because God's a boy. If God were a girl, the sky would be pink.
'What about sunrise and sunset?' I'd asked.
Dad had looked dumbfounded. 'You kids. You think too much.'
It frightened me how shallow the gene pool was that Liam and I were wading in. ~ Julie Anne Peters
Frightened quotes by Julie Anne Peters
When two human beings divided by hostility are both, at the same time, mystified - no, frightened - by the same apparition, there is a bond that springs up between them, and they find themselves united in the most unexpected way. United in their humanity - that is the only way I can describe it. We parted almost as friends. ~ Alice Munro
Frightened quotes by Alice Munro
No matter how lonely you get or how many birth announcements you receive, the trick is not to get frightened. There's nothing wrong with being alone. ~ Wendy Wasserstein
Frightened quotes by Wendy Wasserstein
We're frightened of what makes us different. ~ Anne Rice
Frightened quotes by Anne Rice
How many times have you tried to talk to someone about something that matters to you, tried to get them to see it the way you do? And how many of those times have ended with you feeling bitter, resenting them for making you feel like your pain doesn't have any substance after all?

Like when you've split up with someone, and you try to communicate the way you feel, because you need to say the words, need to feel that somebody understands just how pissed off and frightened you feel. The problem is, they never do. "Plenty more fish in the sea," they'll say, or "You're better off without them," or "Do you want some of these potato chips?" They never really understand, because they haven't been there, every day, every hour. They don't know the way things have been, the way that it's made you, the way it has structured your world. They'll never realise that someone who makes you feel bad may be the person you need most in the world. They don't understand the history, the background, don't know the pillars of memory that hold you up. Ultimately, they don't know you well enough, and they never can. Everyone's alone in their world, because everybody's life is different. You can send people letters, and show them photos, but they can never come to visit where you live.

Unless you love them. And then they can burn it down. ~ Michael Marshall Smith
Frightened quotes by Michael Marshall Smith
When it over, I want to say:all my life
I was a bride married to amazement.
I was a bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.
When it's over, I don't want to wonder
if I have made of my life something particular, and real.
I don't want to find myself sighing and frightened,
or full of argument.
I don't want to end up simply having visited this world.
from When the death comes ~ Mary Oliver
Frightened quotes by Mary Oliver
And there were other rocks that were like animals, creeping, horrible animals, putting out their tongues, and others were like words I could not say, and others like dead people lying on the grass. I went on among them, though they frightened me, and my heart was full of wicked song they put into it; and I wanted to make faces and twist myself about the way they did, and I went on and on a long way till at last I liked the rocks and they didn't frighten me any more ~ Arthur Machen
Frightened quotes by Arthur Machen
I am much better employed from every point of view, when I live solely for my own satisfaction, than when I begin to worry about the world. The world frightens me, and a frightened man is no good for anything. ~ George Gissing
Frightened quotes by George Gissing
A child is not frightened at the thought of being patiently transmuted into an old man. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Frightened quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
We are not designed to deal with the many stress-inducing situations of the twenty-first century. For most of human history, the stressors we faced were mainly physical, like running away from wild animals. Now they are almost entirely psychological. When was the last time you were frightened by a lion? The things that cause us stress in our modern world are the ones that go inside our heads. ~ Jed Diamond
Frightened quotes by Jed Diamond
And when it seemed as though the mists were hiding a fathomless abyss, Lipa and her mother who were born in poverty and prepared to live so till the end, giving up to others everything except their frightened, gentle souls, may have fancied for a minute perhaps that in the vast, mysterious world, among the endless series of lives, they, too, counted for something ... ~ Anton Chekhov
Frightened quotes by Anton Chekhov
When I'm single, I'm this fabulous, independent, confident woman, and then I get involved with one disastrous man after another and I turn into this needy, insecure, fearful girl who becomes frightened of her own shadow. ~ Jane Green
Frightened quotes by Jane Green
I guess I forgot about being frightened because it felt good to finally be in the adventure. ~ William Ritter
Frightened quotes by William Ritter
It frightened me, how close violence is to the civilized surface of a human being. It wasn't the violence itself that was the worry, it was the amount of effort they'd gone to conceal it. A Homo sapiens was a primitive hunter who had woken each day with the knowledge he could kill. And now, the equivalent knowledge was only that he would wake up and buy something. ~ Matt Haig
Frightened quotes by Matt Haig
May all beings everywhere plagued with sufferings of body and mind quickly be freed from their illnesses. May those frightened cease to be afraid, and may those bound be free. May the powerless find power, and may people think of befriending each other. May those who find themselves in trackless, fearful wilderness- the children, the aged, the unprotected- be guarded by beneficent celestials, and may they swiftly attain Buddhahood. ~ Gautama Buddha
Frightened quotes by Gautama Buddha
He drew some relief from knowing that she was happy doing whatever the hell it was she did. Sometimes it seemed to him she was the only happy person he knew, and that frightened him so badly it made him want to curl up and die. ~ Arlene Hunt
Frightened quotes by Arlene Hunt
To make an Army work you have to have every man in it fitted into a fear ladder ... The Army functions best when you're frightened of the man above you, and contemptuous of your subordinates. ~ Norman Mailer
Frightened quotes by Norman Mailer
My father in the film - which we probably haven't seen in previous movies, and in British Asian movies you could probably count on one hand - he says exactly why, actually why he's frightened for his daughter. He came to this country, England, and had a bit of a crappy time. ~ Parminder Nagra
Frightened quotes by Parminder Nagra
What to say? That I would have loved to make the trip but was busy staying out of the mental hospital? It's so humiliating - so degrading. If I knew I wouldn't get caught, I'd love to lie about it - invent an acceptable cancer, that recurs and vanishes, that people could understand - that wouldn't make them frightened and uncomfortable. ~ Andrew Solomon
Frightened quotes by Andrew Solomon
Whatever happens to a baby contributes to the emotional and perceptual map of the world that its developing brain creates. As my colleague Bruce Perry explains it, the brain is formed in a "use-dependent manner."5 This is another way of describing neuroplasticity, the relatively recent discovery that neurons that "fire together, wire together." When a circuit fires repeatedly, it can become a default setting - the response most likely to occur. If you feel safe and loved, your brain becomes specialized in exploration, play, and cooperation; if you are frightened and unwanted, it specializes in managing feelings of fear and abandonment. As infants and ~ Bessel A. Van Der Kolk
Frightened quotes by Bessel A. Van Der Kolk
We could endlessly reminisce, live in the past to an unhealthy degree, then politely kill each other some winter night before bedtime, stirring poison into our cups of whiskey-spiked chamomile tea, wearing party hats. Then, nervous about our double homicide, we could lie in bed together, holding hands again, frightened and waiting, still wondering, after all these years, if we even believed in our own souls. ~ Timothy Schaffert
Frightened quotes by Timothy Schaffert
Once, I was afraid of these walls, frightened by such beauty. But I see the cracks now. It's like the day of the bombing, when I realized Silvers were not invincible. Then it was an explosion - now a few bullets have shattered diamondglass, revealing fear and paranoia beneath. Silvers fleeing from Reds - lions running from mice. The king and queen oppose each other, the court has their own alliances, and Cal - the perfect prince, the good soldier - is a torturous, terrible enemy. Anyone can betray anyone. ~ Victoria Aveyard
Frightened quotes by Victoria Aveyard
I'm always frightened away by movies that lower the bar on our endeavor to learn more about the crazy weird creatures that we are. ~ Jason Ritter
Frightened quotes by Jason Ritter
Looking at the horizon again, I saw a lone figure coming toward me, but I wasn't frightened because I was sure it was my mother. As I got closer to the figure, I could see that it wasn't my mother, but still I wasn't frightened because I could see that it was a woman. ~ Jamaica Kincaid
Frightened quotes by Jamaica Kincaid
Frightened that you'll be overcome by yourself? That a gentle monster inside of you might take over and never let go? ~ Jonathan Friesen
Frightened quotes by Jonathan Friesen
I'm frightened all the time. But I never let it stop me. Never! ~ Georgia O'Keeffe
Frightened quotes by Georgia O'Keeffe
Down the long and silent street,
The dawn, with silver-sandaled feet,
Crept like a frightened girl. ~ Oscar Wilde
Frightened quotes by Oscar Wilde
Awful to think she was a disapproving mother. Awful to wonder-had she always frightened Amy? Is that why the girl had grown up so fearful, always ducking her head? It was bewildering to Isablle. Bewildering that you could harm a child without even knowing, thinking all the while you were being careful, conscientious. But it was a terrible feeling. More terrible than having Avery Clark forget to come to her house. Knowing that her child had grown up frightened. Except it was cockeyed, all backwards, because, thought Isabelle, glancing back at her daughter, I've been frightened of you. ~ Elizabeth Strout
Frightened quotes by Elizabeth Strout
The fatuous idea that a person can be holy by himself denies God the pleasure of saving sinners. God must therefore first take the sledge-hammer of the Law in His fists and smash the beast of self-righteousness and its brood of self-confidence, self wisdom, and self-help. When the conscience has been thoroughly frightened by the Law it welcomes the Gospel of grace with its message of a Savior Who came-not to break the bruised reed nor to quench the smoking flax-but to preach glad tidings to the poor, to heal the broken-hearted, and to grant forgiveness of sins to all the captives. ~ Martin Luther
Frightened quotes by Martin Luther
It's not the innocent young things that need gentle handling
it's the ones that have been frightened and hurt. ~ Dorothy L. Sayers
Frightened quotes by Dorothy L. Sayers
The best way to prevent this is to have a night-light where your cockatiel will be sleeping. This will ensure that your cockatiel feels safe and doesn't become injured when he becomes frightened in the middle of the night. If you do find your cockatiel having night freight simply turn the nearest light on and allow them to see that everything is ok. ~ Juan Alvarez
Frightened quotes by Juan Alvarez
Does something amuse you?' asked Uncle Montague.
'I was merely reminding myself, Uncle, that I am getting too old to be so easily frightened by stories.'
'Really?' said Uncle Montague with a worrying degree of doubt in his voice. 'You think there is an age at which you might become immune to fear? ~ Chris Priestley
Frightened quotes by Chris Priestley
Fear wasn't the problem, she could deal with nerves, it was the excitement welling up in her that frightened her most. The unfamiliar emotion was too strong. Too needy. Too everything she was unprepared to deal with. ~ Christine Feehan
Frightened quotes by Christine Feehan
In the jumbled, fragmented memories I carry from my childhood there are probably nearly as many dreams as images from waking life. I thought of one which might have been my earliest remembered nightmare. I was probably about four years old - I don't think I'd started school yet - when I woke up screaming. The image I retained of the dream, the thing which had frightened me so, was an ugly, clown-like doll made of soft red and cream-coloured rubber. When you squeezed it, bulbous eyes popped out on stalks and the mouth opened in a gaping scream. As I recall it now, it was disturbingly ugly, not really an appropriate toy for a very young child, but it had been mine when I was younger, at least until I'd bitten its nose off, at which point it had been taken away from me. At the time when I had the dream I hadn't seen it for a year or more - I don't think I consciously remembered it until its sudden looming appearance in a dream had frightened me awake.

When I told my mother about the dream, she was puzzled.

'But what's scary about that? You were never scared of that doll.'

I shook my head, meaning that the doll I'd owned - and barely remembered - had never scared me. 'But it was very scary,' I said, meaning that the reappearance of it in my dream had been terrifying.

My mother looked at me, baffled. 'But it's not scary,' she said gently. I'm sure she was trying to make me feel better, and thought this reasonable statement would help. ~ Lisa Tuttle
Frightened quotes by Lisa Tuttle
There are no fates I cannot change, but this fate is one I cannot change without you. You are my strength, Rain. You are the courage I've always lacked."
He gave a choked laugh, and tears glittered in his eyes. "If I am your courage, then why does this idea of yours leave me so frightened? ~ C.L. Wilson
Frightened quotes by C.L. Wilson
To be frank with you, Melchior, I have almost the same feeling since I read your explanation. - - It fell at my feet during the first vacation days. I was startled. I fastened the door and flew through the flaming lines as a frightened owl flies through a burning wood - - I believe I read most of it with my eyes shut. ~ Frank Wedekind
Frightened quotes by Frank Wedekind
The King of Crows raked his fingers across the dark until it bled. He licked the blood from his fingers with a forked tongue. "People will believe anything, you know. You only need them to be frightened enough. ~ Libba Bray
Frightened quotes by Libba Bray
I am not frightened of speaking my mind. I don't have fear in that regard. ~ Jade Jagger
Frightened quotes by Jade Jagger
I always think incipent miracles surround us, waiting only to see if our faith is strong enough. We won't have to understand it; it will just work, like a beating heart, like love. Really, no matter how frightened and discouraged I may become about the future, I look forward to it. In spite of everything I see all around me every day, I have a shaky assurance that everything will turn out fine. I don't think I'm the only one. Why else would the phrase "everything's all right" ease a deep and troubled place in so many of us? We just don't know, we never know so much, yet we have such faith. We hold our hands over our hurts and lean forward, full of yearning and forgiveness. It is how we keep on, this kind of hope. ~ Elizabeth Berg
Frightened quotes by Elizabeth Berg
In short, the man displayed a constant and insurmountable impulse to wrap himself in a covering, to make himself, so to speak, a case which would isolate him and protect him from external influences. Reality irritated him, frightened him, kept him in continual agitation, and, perhaps to justify his timidity, his aversion for the actual, he always praised the past and what had never existed; and even the classical languages which he taught were in reality for him goloshes and umbrellas in which he sheltered himself from real life. ~ Anton Chekhov
Frightened quotes by Anton Chekhov
I think that the exactitude of the photograph has a sort of compelling nature based in its power to duplicate life. But to me the real power of photography is based in death: the fact that somehow it can enliven that which is not there in a kind of stultifying frightened way, because it seems to me that part of one's life is made up of a constant confrontation with one's own death. ~ Barbara Kruger
Frightened quotes by Barbara Kruger
Brave doesn't mean 'fearless,' you know. It means doing the right thing even if you're frightened. ~ Shane Gericke
Frightened quotes by Shane Gericke
Zionism is a subject that all but a few are either too ignorant or too frightened to tackle and expose, but it must be made public and the web dismantled if global tyranny is to be avoided in the very near future. ~ David Icke
Frightened quotes by David Icke
Over and over, we are broken on the shore of life. Our stubborn egos are knocked around, and our frightened hearts are broken open - not once, and not in predictable patterns, but in surprising ways and for as long as we live. ~ Elizabeth Lesser
Frightened quotes by Elizabeth Lesser
Stop your whining. If you are frightened, be silent. Whining is for prey. It attracts predators. And you are not prey. ~ Robin Hobb
Frightened quotes by Robin Hobb
I'm an extremely wealthy man. I own the sky. I have invested all my capital in the sun. I'm not bad-tempered, as you seem to imagine, nor do I bear grudges. But like all wealthy men, I'm a little frightened of losing my fortune. ~ Halldor Laxness
Frightened quotes by Halldor Laxness
He takes a deep breath, and opens the door. In my other life I used to know people like that
they're frightened by the sound of wind through the leaves, they can't bear cockroaches, not to mention policemen, lawyers, even dentists. And yet when the dragon bursts into the clearing, opens its mouth and spits fire, they stand up to them. Calm, cool as an angel. ~ Jose Eduardo Agualusa
Frightened quotes by Jose Eduardo Agualusa
She tried to recall quarrels she'd had with men. Young men: lovers. But none had been anything like this, provoked by something so innocent and trivial. None had been so one-sided. None had left her feeling so frightened and helpless. So alone. ~ Anonymous
Frightened quotes by Anonymous
Those foxes were wild, though. Wild, frightened, ready to run. Claws and teeth and matted fur. Sometimes that was Ayla. Most times it was not. ~ Nina Varela
Frightened quotes by Nina Varela
I think what you can't see is always what you should be frightened of. ~ Marianne Wiggins
Frightened quotes by Marianne Wiggins
The choice to avoid risk is the choice to avoid living, and to avoid living is one of the greatest risk of all. ~ Craig D. Lounsbrough
Frightened quotes by Craig D. Lounsbrough
I knew all of the childhood prayers I uttered on my knees at the side of my bed. Many years of Sunday-school attendance had etched certain Psalms and rote prayers into the fibers of my brain. However, somewhere deep inside of me, I had the secret belief that I did not know how to pray, and that frightened me. ~ Iyanla Vanzant
Frightened quotes by Iyanla Vanzant
I can attempt to stay on the fence. However, the problem is that the fence is a figment of my fear not a reality of my journey. ~ Craig D. Lounsbrough
Frightened quotes by Craig D. Lounsbrough
A child's (or an adult's) nervous system may detect danger or a threat to life when the child enters a new environment or meets a strange person. Cognitively, there is no reason for them to be frightened. But often, even if they understand this, their bodies betray them. Sometimes this betrayal is private; only they are aware that their hearts are beating fast and contracting with such force that they start to sway. For others, the responses are more overt. They may tremble. Their faces may flush, or perspiration may pour from their hands and forehead. Still others may become pale and dizzy and feel precipitously faint. ~ Stephen W. Porges
Frightened quotes by Stephen W. Porges
We have come to a parting of the ways,I suppose",said Anne thoughtfully."we had to come to it,do you think,Diana, that being grown up is really as nice as we used to imagine it would be when we were children?"
"I don't know-there are SOME nice things about it,"answered Diana, again caressing her ring with that little smile which always had the effect of making Anne feel suddenly left out and inexperienced."But there are so many puzzling things, too.Sometimes I feel as if being grown-up just frightened me-and then I would give anything to be a little girl again. ~ L.M. Montgomery
Frightened quotes by L.M. Montgomery
For eight years I was an inmate in a state asylum for the insane. During those years I passed through such unbearable terror that I deteriorated into a wild, frightened creature intent only on survival. And I survived. I was raped by orderlies, gnawed on by rats and poisoned by tainted food. I was chained in padded cells, strapped into strait-jackets and half-drowned in ice baths. And I survived. The asylum itself was a steel trap, and I was not released from its jaws alive and victorious. I crawled out mutilated, whimpering and terribly alone. But I did survive. ~ Frances Farmer
Frightened quotes by Frances Farmer
You can't work at a relationship; you can't control it. You have to be lucky and go through your life. If you are not lucky you have to be prepared for some degree of suffering. That's why most relationships are very difficult and have some degree of pain. People stay together because of inertia, they don't have the energy. Because they are frightened of being lonely, or they have children. ~ Woody Allen
Frightened quotes by Woody Allen
In historical terms women, black people in general, were very attracted to very bright-colored clothing. Most people are frightened by color anyway...They just are. In this culture quiet colors are considered elegant. Civilized Western people wouldn't buy bloodred sheets or dishes. There may be something more to it than what I am suggesting. But the slave population had no access even to what color there was, because they wore slave clothes, hand-me-downs, work clothes made out of burlap and sacking. For them a colored dress would be luxurious; it wouldn't matter whether it was rich or poor cloth . . . just to have a red or a yellow dress. I stripped Beloved of color so that there are only the small moments when Sethe runs amok buying ribbons and bows, enjoying herself the way children enjoy that kind of color. The whole business of color was why slavery was able to last such a long time. It wasn't as though you had a class of convicts who could dress themselves up and pass themselves off. No, these were people marked because of their skin color, as well as other features. So color is a signifying mark. Baby Suggs dreams of color and says, "Bring me a little lavender." It is a kind of luxury. We are so inundated with color and visuals. I just wanted to pull it back so that one could feel that hunger and that delight. ~ Toni Morrison
Frightened quotes by Toni Morrison
I wonder what Lena is doing now. I always wonder what Lena is doing. Rachel, too: both my girls, my beautiful, big-eyed girls. But I worry about Rachel less. Rachel was always harder than Lena, somehow. More defiant, more stubborn, less feeling . Even as a girl, she frightened me - fierce and fiery-eyed, with a temper like my father's once was.
But Lena . . . little darling Lena, with her tangle of dark hair and her flushed, chubby cheeks. She used to rescue spiders from the pavement to keep them from getting squashed; quiet, thoughtful Lena, with the sweetest lisp to break your heart. To break my heart: my wild, uncured, erratic, incomprehensible heart. I wonder whether her front teeth still overlap; whether she still confuses the words pretzel and pencil occasionally; whether the wispy brown hair grew straight and long, or began to curl.
I wonder whether she believes the lies they told her. ~ Lauren Oliver
