I had come to love the space, and I could see why Lady Anna had too. The orchids were positively glorious. She'd tagged each flower with its proper botanical name, but I favored the pet names she'd given each bloom. For instance, a stunning pink 'Cattleya' was named "Lady Catalina." And a yellow 'Oncidium,' which to me looked like a flock of ladies in fluffy party dresses, was called "Lady Aralia of the Bayou. ~ Sarah Jio
Flora Lewis quotes by Sarah Jio
I was too awestruck to speak. Vines of bright pink flowers danced over a wrought-iron arbor. I recognized them immediately as the very same variety, bougainvillea, that grew in Greenhouse No. 4 at the New York Botanical Garden. Just beyond, two potted trees stood at attention- a lemon, its shiny yellow globes glistening in the sunlight, and what looked like an orange, studded with the tiniest fruit I'd ever seen.
"What is this?" I asked, fascinated.
"A kumquat," she said. "Lady Anna used to pick them for the children." She reached out to pluck one of the tiny oranges from the tree. "Here, try for yourself."
I held it in my hand, admiring its smooth, shiny skin.
I sank my teeth into the flesh of the fruit. Its thin skin disintegrated in my mouth, releasing a burst of sweet and sour that made my eyes shoot open and a smile spread across my face. "Oh, my," I said. "I've never had anything like it."
Mrs. Dilloway nodded. "You should try the clementines, then. They're Persian."
I walked a few paces further, admiring the potted orchids- at least a hundred specimens, so exquisite they looked like Southern belles in hoop skirts. On the far wall were variegated ferns, bleeding hearts, and a lilac tree I could smell from the other end of the room. ~ Sarah Jio
Flora Lewis quotes by Sarah Jio
Democracy may have arisen in the West as the way of striving for the universal aspiration to dignity and freedom, but it isn't alien to the underlying concepts that infuse religion and moral philosophy everywhere. ~ Flora Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by Flora Lewis
We have learned how to do a lot of things. We must try to relearn why. ~ Flora Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by Flora Lewis
Janie ran to my side, where she tugged at the book eagerly as though she'd seen it before. "Flower book," she said, pointing to the cover.
"Where did you find Mummy's book?" Katherine asked, hovering near me.
Cautiously, I revealed the book as I sat on the sofa. "Would you like to look at it with me?" I said, avoiding the question.
Katherine nodded and the boys gathered round as I cracked the spine and thumbed through page after page of beautiful camellias, pressed and glued onto each page, with handwritten notes next to each. On the page that featured the 'Camellia reticulata,' a large, salmon-colored flower, she had written: 'Edward had this one brought in from China. It's fragile. I've given it the garden's best shade.' On the next page, near the 'Camellia sasanqua,' she wrote: 'A christmas gift from Edward and the children. This one will need extra love. It hardly survived the passage from Japan. I will spend the spring nursing it back to health.'
On each page, there were meticulous notes about the care and feeding of the camellias- when she planted them, how often they were watered, fertilized, and pruned. In the right-hand corner of some pages, I noticed an unusual series of numbers.
"What does that mean?" I asked the children.
Nicholas shrugged. "This one was Mummy's favorite," he said, flipping to the last page in the book. I marveled at the pink-tipped white blossoms as my heart began to beat faster. The Middlebury Pink. ~ Sarah Jio
Flora Lewis quotes by Sarah Jio
I placed the tubes of paint on the palette and selected a small canvas. I prepared the palette with an assortment of colors, then closed my eyes, remembering the way the moors had looked when I rode into town with Lord Livingston. He'd been so different on that drive into the village before he left for London. Had that been the side of him that Lady Anna had fallen in love with? I dipped my brush into the black paint and then mixed in some white until I'd created the right shade of gray, then touched the brush to the canvas. I loved the feeling of the paintbrush in my hand. He'd been kind to buy me the art supplies, but I remembered how he'd behaved in the dining room and at other times before that. 'How could he be so cruel, so unfeeling?'
Once I'd painted the clouds, I moved on to the hills, mixing a sage green color for the grass and then dotting the foreground with a bit of lavender to simulate the heather. I stepped back from the canvas and frowned. It needed something else. But what? I looked out the window to the orchard.
The Middlebury Pink. 'Who took the page from Lady Anna's book? Lord Livingston?' I dabbed my brush into the brown paint and created the structure of the tree. Next I dotted the branches with its heart-shaped leaves and large, white, saucer-size blossoms with pink tips. ~ Sarah Jio
Flora Lewis quotes by Sarah Jio
Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things. ~ Flora Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by Flora Lewis
There were the days of so-called free love ... but it didn't take long to discover that love is not free. Sooner or later it exacts its price. ~ Flora Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by Flora Lewis
If you make the same guess often enough it ceases to be a guess and becomes a Scientific Fact. This is the inductive method. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
Look on the bright side," said Simon, "If they need a human sacrifice, you can always offer me. I'm not sure the rest of you qualify anyway. ~ Cassandra Clare
Flora Lewis quotes by Cassandra Clare
Factors Influencing Us as Empaths
There are a number of factors affecting how we pick up energy from other people:
●Receiving
Our sensitivity as receivers will factor into how much energy we pick up.
●Sending
Some people transmit their energy more strongly than others, and the depth of the emotions that they are experiencing will also turn up the volume that they are sending out.
●Awareness
The unaware person may be just as sensitive as the aware person. The latter will understand why they have mood swings; the former will not.
●Bloodline
Blood relatives will affect us regardless of where in the world we are and whether we are thinking about them or not. The link between sender and receiver is often stronger where there is a blood connection. Often, empath children may process the emotions of their parents or siblings long into adulthood.
●Emotional Connection
Friends and acquaintances will impact us primarily based on the strength of the emotional connection we have to them, largely without regard to physical proximity. The stronger the emotional connection is, the less important the physical proximity is. Having worked from home for many years with teams spread all over the country, I have picked up energy from managers and teammates regardless of location.
●Physical Proximity
Neighbors and strangers will influence us based on physical proximity. This is true for the people living in our neighborhood and the ~ Trevor N. Lewis, Abbigayle McKinney
Flora Lewis quotes by Trevor N. Lewis, Abbigayle McKinney
So young a child ought to know which way she's going, even if she doesn't know her own name! ~ Lewis Carroll
Flora Lewis quotes by Lewis Carroll
Now it may surprise you to learn that in His efforts to get permanent possession of a soul, He relies on the troughs even more than on the peaks; some of His special favourites have gone through longer and deeper throughs than anyone else. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
bottle that reads, "Drink me. ~ Lewis Carroll
Flora Lewis quotes by Lewis Carroll
In Wonderland, though she knew she had but to open them again, and all would change to dull reality
the grass would be only rustling in the wind, and the pool rippling to the waving of the reeds
the rattling teacups would ~ Lewis Carroll
Flora Lewis quotes by Lewis Carroll
But progress means getting nearer to the place where you want to be. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
And for all I can tell, the only difference is that what many see we call a real thing, and what only one sees we call a dream. But things that many see may have no taste or moment in them at all, and things that are shown only to one may be spears and water-spouts of truth from the very depth of truth. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
When you go to church you are really listening-in to the secret wireless from out friends: that is why the enemy is so anxious to prevent us from going. He does it by playing on our conceit and laziness and intellectual snobbery. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
I came from a big family. As a matter of fact, I never got to sleep alone until I was married. ~ Lewis Grizzard
Flora Lewis quotes by Lewis Grizzard
The philosophers of industrialism, from Bacon to Bentham, from Smith to Marx, insisted that the improvement of man's condition was the highest requirement of morality. But in what did the improvement consist? The answer seemed so obvious to them that they did not bother to justify it: the expansion and fulfillment of the material wants of man, and the spread of these benefits, from the few who had once preempted them, to the many who had so long lived on the scraps Dives had thrown into the gutter. ~ Lewis Mumford
Flora Lewis quotes by Lewis Mumford
I don't have a formal home recording studio, but I can record tracks on my computer upstairs in my office. ~ Huey Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by Huey Lewis
Fear and, to a lesser extent, greed are what make money move. ~ Michael Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by Michael Lewis
Aslan didn't tell Pole what would happen. He only told her what to do. That fellow will be the death of us once he's up, I shouldn't wonder. But that doesn't let us off following the signs. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
Once a King in Narnia, always a King in Narnia. But don't go trying to use the same route twice. Indeed, don't try to get there at all. It'll happen when you're not looking for it. And don't talk too much about it even among yourselves. And don't mention it to anyone else unless you find that they've had adventures of the same sort themselves. What's that? How will you know? Oh, you'll know all right. Odd things, they say-even their looks-will let the secret out. Keep your eyes open. Bless me, what do they teach them at these schools.
-The Professor ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
Books are slow. They require time; they are written slowly, published slowly, and read slowly. ~ Lewis Buzbee
Flora Lewis quotes by Lewis Buzbee
More than once in the days that followed [Eustace] attempted to write it for them on the sand. But this never succeeded. In the first place Eustace (never having read the right books) had no idea how to tell a story straight. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
He first teaches us the power of always trying again. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
The great thing is to be found at one's post as a child of God, living each day as though it were our last, but planning as though the world might last a hundred years. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
That's because Narnia was a Christian allegory pretending to be a fantasy series, you asshole," said one of the other boys. "C.S. Lewis never went through any doors. He didn't know how it worked. He wanted to tell a story, and he'd probably heard about kids like us, and he made shit up. ~ Seanan McGuire
Flora Lewis quotes by Seanan McGuire
And above all, you must be asking which door is the true one; not which pleases you best by its paint and panelling…the question should never be: 'Do I like that kind of service?' but 'Are these doctrines true: Is holiness there? Does my conscience move me towards this? Is my reluctance to move to this door due to my pride, or my mere taste, or my personal dislike for this particular door-keeper? ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
Besides being complicated, reality, in my experience, is usually odd. It is not neat, not obvious, not what you expect. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
At present we are on the outside of the world, the wrong side of the door. We discern the freshness and purity of morning, but they do not make us fresh and pure. We cannot mingle with the splendours we see. But all the leaves of the New Testament are rustling with the rumour that it will not always be so. Some day, God willing, we shall get in. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
MOST PEOPLE have no knowledge or understanding of the psychological changes of captivity. Social judgment of chronically traumatized people therefore tends to be extremely harsh. ~ Judith Lewis Herman
Flora Lewis quotes by Judith Lewis Herman
I love you Huey was the note I read, but there's a strange pair of shoes underneath the bed. ~ Huey Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by Huey Lewis
Everything dead and still inside of me came alive, and he did what he always did: ignited me. And, fuck yes, I wanted to burn. Let me burn with this man. ~ R.J. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by R.J. Lewis
I'm the only person in my entire extended family that plays an instrument or sings, really. Which is kind of weird. I don't know where I got it from. ~ Ryan Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by Ryan Lewis
I hope I do not offend God by making my Communions in the frame of mind I have been describing. The command, after all, was Take, eat: not Take, understand. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
It was not an esthetic room. Though Frank Shallard might have come to admire pictures, great music, civilized furniture, he had been trained to regard them as worldly, and to content himself with art which 'presented a message,' to regard 'Les Miserables' as superior because the bishop was a kind man, and 'The Scarlet Letter' as a poor book because the heroine was sinful and the author didn't mind. ~ Sinclair Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by Sinclair Lewis
A great yellow circle above the cornfield had slipped out from behind some clouds. The moon. It was the first moon Flora had ever seen. Her heart filled with the beauty of it, and she made a promise to herself. I will be prepared. And I won't live forever inside this pen. ~ Chris Kurtz
Flora Lewis quotes by Chris Kurtz
I was allowed to play at philosophy no longer. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
When we Westerners call people 'natives' we implicitly take the colour out of our perception of them. We see them as wild animals infesting the country in which we happen to come across them, as part of the local flora and fauna and not as men of like passions with ourselves. So long as we think of them as 'natives' we may exterminate them or, as is more likely to-day, domesticate them and honestly (perhaps not altogether mistakenly) believe that we are improving the breed, but we do not begin to understand them. ~ Arnold Joseph Toynbee
Flora Lewis quotes by Arnold Joseph Toynbee
The retirement age for Greek jobs classified as "arduous" is as early as fifty-five for men and fifty for women. As this is also the moment when the state begins to shovel out generous pensions, more than six hundred Greek professions somehow managed to get themselves classified as arduous: hairdressers, radio announcers, writers, musicians, and on and on and on. ~ Michael Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by Michael Lewis
Progress means getting nearer to the place you want to be. And if you have taken a wrong turning, then to go forward does not get you any nearer.
If you are on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; and in that case the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive man. ~ C.S. Lewis
Flora Lewis quotes by C.S. Lewis
Don't you mind," said Puddleglum. "There are no accidents. Our guide is Aslan; and he was there when the giant king caused the letters to be cut, and he knew already all things that would come of them; including this. ~ C.S. Lewis
