Yet entertainment
as I define it, pleasure and all
remains the only sure means we have of bridging, or at least of feeling as if we have bridged, the gulf of consciousness that separates each of us from everybody else. The best response to those who would cheapen and exploit it is not to disparage or repudiate but to reclaim entertainment as a job fit for artists and for audiences, a two-way exchange of attention, experience, and the universal hunger for connection. ~ Michael Chabon
Fedorenko Art quotes by Michael Chabon
That dead feeling, but you're still breathing. ~ Christina Strigas
Fedorenko Art quotes by Christina Strigas
The first 10 years of my professional life had only to do with running away from my father. He was a wonderful cabinet-maker, and me being the eldest son, I had to take over his shop, his profession and so on and so on. I tried to escape by going to art school and then going on to industrial design and then interior design. ~ Peter Zumthor
Fedorenko Art quotes by Peter Zumthor
The most glorious works of art, the ones that bring the purest joy – perhaps they need not be touched or known, but seen only with the heart. ~ Michelle Cuevas
Fedorenko Art quotes by Michelle Cuevas
The art of governing consists simply of being honest, exercising common sense, following principle, and doing what is right and just. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Fedorenko Art quotes by Thomas Jefferson
O woman! woman! thou shouldest have few sins of thine own to answer for! Thou art the author of such a book of follies in a man that it would need the tears of all the angels to blot the record out. ~ Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton
Fedorenko Art quotes by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton
There is a dialectic between common humanity and particular ways of being human. ~ Howard Morphy
Fedorenko Art quotes by Howard Morphy
I'm going to punch words in your ear holes. ~ Christy Leigh Stewart
Fedorenko Art quotes by Christy Leigh Stewart
Has it ever happened, you've seen a striking film, beautifully written and acted and photographed, that you walk out of the theater glad to be a human being and you say to yourself I hope they make a lot of money from that? I hope the actors, I hope the director earns a million dollars for what they've done, what they've given me tonight? And you go back and see the movie again and you're happy to be a tiny part of the system that is rewarding those people with every ticket ... the actors I see on the screen, they'll get twenty cents of this very dollar I'm paying now; they'll be able to buy an ice cream cone any flavor they want from their share of my ticket alone. Glorious moments in art in books and films and dance, they're delicious because we see ourselves in glory's mirror. ~ Richard Bach
Fedorenko Art quotes by Richard Bach
I found the Taj Mahal as the most appropriate example of artistically expressed love. ~ Suman Pokhrel
Fedorenko Art quotes by Suman Pokhrel
In making tactical dispositions, the highest pitch you can attain is to conceal them ~ Sun Tzu
Fedorenko Art quotes by Sun Tzu
If you want to work on your art, work on your life. ~ Anton Chekhov
Fedorenko Art quotes by Anton Chekhov
With thee goes
Thy husband, him to follow thou art bound;
Where he abides, think there thy native soil. ~ John Milton
Fedorenko Art quotes by John Milton
There's no art to find the mind's construction in the face. ~ William Shakespeare
Fedorenko Art quotes by William Shakespeare
Most men seem to live for themselves, without much or any regard for thy glory, or for the good of others;
They earnestly desire and eagerly pursue the riches, honor, and pleasures of this life, as if they supposed that wealth, greatness, merriment, could make their immortal souls happy;
But, alas, what false delusive dreams are these!
And how miserable ere long will those be that sleep in them, for all out happiness consists in loving thee and being holy as thou art holy. ~ Arthur Bennett
Fedorenko Art quotes by Arthur Bennett
Blind hope. Blind hope is all we have. There's a Greek tragedy called Prometheus Bound; Prometheus is the [titan] that gave humans fire. He's chained to a rock and bemoaning his fate and saying, "I gave you everything. By giving you fire, I gave you blind hope. By giving you a little light that kept you warm at night, I let you believe that this was all going to be okay." For me, that's what art has been. Music and books, it's an act of hope to make them, and it's an act of hope to listen to them. That hope will be dashed, you will say goodbye. ~ Torquil Campbell
Fedorenko Art quotes by Torquil Campbell
Spartans, stoics, heroes, saints and gods use short and positive speech. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Fedorenko Art quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
The only enemy of art is taste. ~ Thomas Hoving
Fedorenko Art quotes by Thomas Hoving
Seventies macho was both a look – moustache, jeans, leather jacket – and an attitude – cool, heartless, virile – that were reactions against the old-style homosexuality of too much art and too much emotion. ~ Christopher Bram
Fedorenko Art quotes by Christopher Bram
Henry James was our master of periphrasis
the fine art of saying as little as possible in the greatest number of words. ~ Edward Abbey
Fedorenko Art quotes by Edward Abbey
The artist had captured a moment that went on suggesting other moments in the mind of the beholder. This, Timmon told me, was what every painter, every singer, every craftsman sought to create. ~ Jim Grimsley
Fedorenko Art quotes by Jim Grimsley
The artist must manage to make posterity believe that he never existed. ~ Gustave Flaubert
Fedorenko Art quotes by Gustave Flaubert
What can I do but force myself to remember? Try to imprint what I know on my soul, a thing that has no surface, no sides, no pages, no form of any kind. Carry it so deeply in the pockets of my existence that when I open my eyes and look down at my new hands with their thumbs that are able to close tightly around their fingers, I will already know. I will already see. ~ Garth Stein
Fedorenko Art quotes by Garth Stein
Twelve years ago I left Boston and New York, and moved east and west at the same time. East, to a little village in Devon, England, a town I've been familiar with for years, since my friends Brian and Wendy Froud and Alan Lee all live there. It had long been my dream to live in England, so I finally bought a little old cottage over there. But I decided, both for visa and health reasons, living there half the year would be better than trying to cope with cold, wet Dartmoor winters. At that point, Beth Meacham had moved out to Arizona, and I discovered how wonderful the Southwest is, particularly in the wintertime. Now I spend every winter-spring in Tucson and every summer-autumn in England. Both places strongly affect my writing and my painting. They're very opposite landscapes, and each has a very different mythic history. In Tucson, the population is a mix of Native Americans, Mexican Americans, and Euro-Americans of various immigrant backgrounds - so the folklore of the place is a mix of all those things, as well as the music and the architecture. The desert has its own colors, light, and rhythms. In Devon, by contrast, it's all Celtic and green and leafy, and the color palette of the place comes straight out of old English paintings - which is more familiar to me, growing up loving the Pre-Raphaelites and England's 'Golden Age' illustrators. I've learned to love an entirely different palette in Arizona, where the starkness of the desert is offset by the brilliance of t ~ Terri Windling
Fedorenko Art quotes by Terri Windling
But my brother will never let me change the world if I don't stand up to him. IT'll just keep happening, over and over, until there's no art left inside me. It won't ever stop unless I make it stop. ~ Eric Bell
Fedorenko Art quotes by Eric Bell
Art is a mirror of time, it must reflect a moment. ~ Unarine Ramaru
Fedorenko Art quotes by Unarine Ramaru
How much distance should there be between art and artist? I'd say no more than a lifetime. ~ Jarod Kintz
Fedorenko Art quotes by Jarod Kintz
Here is how to sit through small openings of your father's first art films, surrounded by surly foreign cigarette smoke and conversations so pretentious you literally cannot believe them, you're sure you have misheard them. ~ David Foster Wallace
Fedorenko Art quotes by David Foster Wallace
In art it is hard to say anything as good as saying nothing. ~ Ludwig Wittgenstein
Fedorenko Art quotes by Ludwig Wittgenstein
Art does not
belong to all times; it is determined, on the contrary, by its period, and expresses, says Marx, the
privileged values of the ruling classes. ~ Albert Camus
