Do what feels right to you, in whatever circumstance you find yourself in, even if it seems improbable or even impossible. And have faith. Everything else will follow. ~ Virginia Boecker
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Virginia Boecker
I circle around them, my sword pointed in their direction. "Hermes Trismegistus. Ostanes the Persian. Olympiodorous of Thebes---"
I stop, feeling like an idiot. These necromancers and the ridiculous names they give themselves. They're always trying to outdo one another.
"You five," I said instead. "By the authority of King Malcolm of Anglia, I am commanded to arrest you for the crime of witchcraft. ~ Virginia Boecker
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Virginia Boecker
Elizabeth was counting on Marco to keep cousin Mary occupied until after the board meeting was over. A piece of cheese might catch a mouse, but an afternoon alone with a muscular masseur would ensnare her cousin far more effectively. And afterwards, while Mary lay sated and sleeping upon a massage table, wiser heads could determine the company's future. There were times, Elizabeth thought, when success in business demanded utter ruthlessness. ~ Barbara Taylor Bradford
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Barbara Taylor Bradford
Life may look to be made up of incredible coincidences. One problem. I don't believe in coincidences. I believe in twists of fate. ~ Tania Elizabeth
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Tania Elizabeth
Oh, don't get me started! I love fantasy, I read it for pleasure, even after all these years. Pat McKillip, Ursula Le Guin and John Crowley are probably my favorite writers in the field, in addition to all the writers in the Endicott Studio group - but there are many others I also admire. In children's fantasy, I'm particularly keen on Philip Pullman, Donna Jo Napoli, David Almond and Jane Yolen - though my favorite novels recently were Midori Snyder's Hannah's Garden, Holly Black's Tithe, and Neil Gaiman's Coraline.

I read a lot of mainstream fiction as well - I particularly love Alice Hoffman, A.S. Byatt, Sara Maitland, Sarah Waters, Sebastian Faulks, and Elizabeth Knox. There's also a great deal of magical fiction by Native American authors being published these days - Louise Erdrich's Antelope Wife, Alfredo Vea Jr.'s Maravilla, Linda Hogan's Power, and Susan Power's Grass Dancer are a few recent favorites.

I'm a big fan of Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Charles Dickens, and Anthony Trollope - I re-read Jane Austen's novels in particular every year.Other fantasists say they read Tolkien every year, but for me it's Austen. I adore biographies, particularly biographies of artists and writers (and particularly those written by Michael Holroyd). And I love books that explore the philosophical side of art, such as Lewis Hyde's The Gift, Carolyn Heilbrun's Writing a Woman's Life, or David Abram's Spell of the Sensuous.

(from a 2002 interview) ~ Terri Windling
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Terri Windling
But she was old, and old women do tend to get pushed aside at big gatherings - even when they have footed the bill for that gathering. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
I knew the things happening in my life would eventually define my future, and I guess I hoped no matter what occurred those things wouldn't ultimately define me. ~ S.R. Grey
Elizabeth Grey quotes by S.R. Grey
His gaze held hers, and his voice was tender and rough. "Love me, Elizabeth."
Elizabeth felt a tremor run through her entire body, but she looked at him without flinching. "I do. ~ Judith McNaught
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Judith McNaught
The picture of helpless indolence she calls herself
sublimely helpless and impotent
I had done living I thought
Was ever life so like death before? My face was so close against the tombstones,
that there seemed no room for tears. ~ Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
I-I don't usually go around throwing rocks at people's windows. Or saying that I've wanted to kiss you since your first day at work, when you wanted to know why we had three codes for fish sandwiches when we only sold one kind. ~ Elizabeth Scott
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Scott
And our task is harder even than that," he said, "for we also have to invoke the grey fumes without denying the palpitating breath of roses. We have to give glimpses of a world that sometimes seems to work like a machine bent on some inexorable but inscrutable task, with all of us caught in its coils, cogs meshing always with the absurd, frantic pistons pushing away at the futile."

"And yet," he added, his voice now only a murmur which seemed to be a part of the rustling of the withered bushes and the passing noises of the road, "we may also at times suggest a slight faltering in the grinding of the machine, or the brief opening of an unknown vista suggesting that the machine is not all that there is. ~ Mark Valentine
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Mark Valentine
Measure your worth by the dedication to your path, not by your successes or failures." Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic ~ Joanna Penn
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Joanna Penn
He had learned in the past four years to speak only when he knew that which he was speaking about. Moreover, he had learned that silence can sometimes relax a listener into thinking that one might be intelligent. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
If everyone is thinking alike, someone isn't thinking. ~ Elizabeth George
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth George
The passion for being for ever with one's fellows, and the fear of being left for a few hours alone, is to me wholly incomprehensible. I can entertain myself quite well for weeks together, hardly aware, except for the pervading peace, that I have been alone at all. ~ Elizabeth Von Arnim
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Von Arnim
The sky was aquamarine, stroked with clouds. She could smell the grass, and taste the scent of small, crushed flowers. She looked back up over her forehead at the grey-black wall towering behind her, and wondered if the castle had ever been attacked on days like this. Did the sky seem so limitless, the waters of the straits so fresh and clean, the flowers so bright and fragrant, when men fought and screamed, hacked and staggered and fell and watched their blood mat the grass? Mists and dusk, rain and lowering cloud seemed the better background; clothes to cover the shame of battle. ~ Anonymous
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Anonymous
That is a failing indeed!" cried Elizabeth. "Implacable resentment is a shade in a character. But you have chosen your fault well. I really cannot laugh at it. You are safe from me." "There is, I believe, in every disposition a tendency to some particular evil - a natural defect, which not even the best education can overcome." "And your defect is to hate everybody." "And yours," he replied with a smile, "is willfully to misunderstand them." "Do ~ Jane Austen
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Jane Austen
A fish and a bird may indeed fall in love, but where shall they live? ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
The only thing he could come up with was the story of Joseph and Mary and the flight into Egypt - a boyhood memory, because Grey hadn't been to church in years. Joseph had always seemed like an odd duck, taking care of a woman who was carrying somebody else's baby. But Grey was beginning to see the sense in it, how a person could become attached just by being wanted. ~ Justin Cronin
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Justin Cronin
You'll lose your audience and then where will we be? We have future gray-eyed babies to feed, you know. ~ Julia Quinn
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Julia Quinn
Success is a great deodorant. It takes away all your past smells. ~ Elizabeth Taylor
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Taylor
Thoreau has been my companion for some days past, it having struck me as
more appropriate to bring him out to a pond than to read him, as was
hitherto my habit, on Sunday mornings in the garden. He is a person who
loves the open air, and will refuse to give you much pleasure if you try
to read him amid the pomp and circumstance of upholstery; but out in the
sun, and especially by this pond, he is delightful, and we spend the
happiest hours together, he making statements, and I either agreeing
heartily, or just laughing and reserving my opinion till I shall have
more ripely considered the thing. ~ Elizabeth Von Arnim
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Von Arnim
Obedience is the primary object of all sound education. ~ Elizabeth Missing Sewell
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Missing Sewell
He who seeks pleasure with reference to himself, not others, will ever find that pleasure is only another name for discontent. ~ Letitia Elizabeth Landon
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Letitia Elizabeth Landon
The past is important. It is the past that helps make us who we are. ~ Elizabeth Morgan
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Morgan
Ever notice how really smart people enjoy making silly jokes? ~ Elizabeth Chandler
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Chandler
What a pity every child couldn't learn to read under a willow tree ... ~ Elizabeth George Speare
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth George Speare
A late arrival had the impression of lots of loud people unnecessarily grouped within a smoke-blue space between two mirrors gorged with reflections. Because, I suppose, Cynthia wished to be the youngest in the room, the women she used to invite, married or single, were, at the best, in their precarious forties; some of them would bring from their homes, in dark taxis, intact vestiges of good looks, which, however, they lost as the party progressed. It has always amazed me - the capacity sociable weekend revelers have of finding almost at once, by a purely empiric but very precise method, a common denominator of drunkenness, to which everybody loyally sticks before descending, all together, to the next level. The rich friendliness of the matrons was marked by tomboyish overtones, while the fixed inward look of amiably tight men was like a sacrilegious parody of pregnancy. Although some of the guests were connected in one way or another with the arts, there was no inspired talk, no wreathed, elbow-propped heads, and of course no flute girls. From some vantage point where she had been sitting in a stranded mermaid pose on the pale carpet with one or two younger fellows, Cynthia, her face varnished with a film of beaming sweat, would creep up on her knees, a proffered plate of nuts in one hand, and crisply tap with the other the athletic leg of Cochran or Corcoran, an art dealer, ensconced, on a pearl-grey sofa, between two flushed, happily disintegrating ladies.

At a ~ Vladimir Nabokov
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Vladimir Nabokov
We don't think of being bound to the oath as a sacrifice, but as an honor. It is an honor to use our powers to better this world. ~ Elizabeth Lim
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Lim
The only people who are not in awe of Emerson's powerful voice and well-nigh superhuman strength are the members of his own family. He is aware of this, and often complains about it; so from time to time I like to put on a little show of being intimidated. 'Proceed, my dear,' I said apologetically. ~ Elizabeth Peters
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Peters
Shibui: a kind of beauty that only time can reveal. Shibui was the subtle beauty of grey and brown moss on an old rock. And the taste of an old wine which recalled a ripening of grapes and the perfect balance of sun, wind and rain - that too was shibui. Drisana's face radiated shibui - 'radiate' was not quite the right word - her face revealed the grain of her character and her life's experiences as if it were a piece of ivory painstakingly and beautifully carved by time. ~ David Zindell
Elizabeth Grey quotes by David Zindell
Dream-canals and heard a phantom song pealing high between vaporous grey wave-lapped walls. ~ Kenneth Grahame
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Kenneth Grahame
To unwind after training, I love to have a long hot soak in the bath, then veg out on the sofa with a box set. I'm a box-set junkie! I absolutely love 'Grey's Anatomy.' ~ Jessica Ennis
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Jessica Ennis
I'm not a particularly shiny, happy person. I'm fairly cynical, and that's what draws me to comedy. ~ Elizabeth Banks
Elizabeth Grey quotes by Elizabeth Banks
