The reasons for Emma's illness and for her decision to allow life in, rather than die, are intertwined and involve the beginnings of her feelings of belonging, of safety and of competence to be in the world. ~ Carol Lee
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Carol Lee
No food will ever hurt you as much as an unhealthy mind. ~ Brittany Burgunder
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Brittany Burgunder
While she is still hospitalised, I take Emma out for strengthening walks, for her muscles and been under-used for a long time. She is sometimes breathless, I notice with concern, and there are other changes in her, either through a nerve her therapy touches, or through her illness, or both, which make her, quite often, disagreeable to be with. ~ Carol Lee
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Carol Lee
I think sometimes making yourself vulnerable before you are ready is exactly what can hold you accountable. Do what you fear. ~ Brittany Burgunder
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Brittany Burgunder
I decided to say something.
It was through an email, an email to my mom confessing that I had a problem with food, that maybe it was an eating disorder, that I wasn't sure what to do or feel. That yes, I had gained weight, and I was scared, and I was constantly thinking about food.
That it was taking over my life. ~ Rachael Rose Steil
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Rachael Rose Steil
Recovery doesn't mean putting your life on hold. Recovery means holding on so you can live your best life. ~ Brittany Burgunder
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Brittany Burgunder
The good news, however, is that, also contrary to popular belief, full and lasting recovery from an eating disorder is possible. ~ Lynn Crilly
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Lynn Crilly
Bear in mind you have a life to live. There is an incredible loss. There is a profound grief. And there is, in the end, after a long time and more work than you ever thought possible, a time when it gets easier. ~ Marya Hornbacher
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Marya Hornbacher
This woman's size protected her
from the hurts of the world
but it also imprisoned her soul.
As the merry-go-round revolved, she ate another French fry,as a silent scream frozen on her face. ~ David W. Earle
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by David W. Earle
The very ironic, almost laughable thing about all of this, is that all the punishment and pain you're inflicting on yourself is an infinitely harder way to accomplish your end goal of looking and feeling good. ~ Callie Bowld
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Callie Bowld
Breaking an addiction is never easy, but it can be done. You are stronger than that red-faced demon screaming in the bathroom. ~ Callie Bowld
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Callie Bowld
Recovery is a verb, not a noun. You have to be an active participant in order to continuously improve. ~ Brittany Burgunder
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Brittany Burgunder
I think we all need to be able to laugh at ourselves every now and then. Otherwise, you'll take yourself so seriously, nothing will ever get through. ~ Callie Bowld
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Callie Bowld
Just because something is familiar, doesn't mean it's safe. And just because something feels safe, doesn't mean it's good for you. ~ Brittany Burgunder
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Brittany Burgunder
Real hope combined with real action has always pulled me through difficult times. Real hope combined with doing nothing has never pulled me through. ~ Jenni Schaefer
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Jenni Schaefer
You have to make peace with food. You have to learn, and program your brain to understand: your body needs food. ~ Callie Bowld
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Callie Bowld
No two eating disorders are the same.
No two individuals are the same.
No two paths to recovery are the same.
But everyone's strength to reach recovery IS the same. ~ Brittany Burgunder
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Brittany Burgunder
I promise no food will ever hurt you as much as a negative mind. ~ Brittany Burgunder
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Brittany Burgunder
It is called a disorder for a reason. Because it makes no rational sense. It's completely counterproductive and, the saddest part, it is also dissatisfying and damaging. ~ Callie Bowld
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Callie Bowld
We take action when we have the honesty to admit that things are still broken, despite our best efforts otherwise. We take action when we hold ourselves continually open to new techniques, remaining resolutely receptive to new sources of support and new feeds of information. We take action when we are willing, in each new moment, to try again. ~ Shannon Cutts
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Shannon Cutts
Why am I here? I'm here because I know I have a binge eating disorder. I want to get help. I want to feel good about myself again and I want people to actually see me for the person I am, not just my body. ~ Megan E. Cassidy
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Megan E. Cassidy
You are not alone.
You are not weak.
You are brass and bold and stronger than this disease.
You are. ~ Callie Bowld
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Callie Bowld
Everyone kept asking me if I wanted to die.
Well, no. No I didn't want to die.
But no one ever asked me if I wanted to live. ~ Brittany Burgunder
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Brittany Burgunder
Did you ever think about boys?' I say, staring up into the dark.
'There wasn't room,' she whispers, and her voice is unbelievably sad. 'At first, after Connor, I was just waiting. I was going to get a new boyfriend soon- as soon as I was prettier or better, more perfect. But after a while there was no room for anything else. If I though about kissing or sex, I just started feeling ugly, too awful for anything good. ~ Brenna Yovanoff
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Brenna Yovanoff
You deserve the place you have in this world. Do not let the eating disorder take that from you. ~ Rae Smith
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Rae Smith
Even though the injury has faded, I still see it the way it was right after the accident: raw and red, a jagged lightning bold splitting the symmetry of my face. In this, I suppose I'm like a girl with an eating disorder, who weighs ninety-eight pounds but sees a fat person staring back at her from the mirror. It isn't even a scar to me, really. It's a map of where my life went wrong. ~ Jodi Picoult
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Jodi Picoult
During the investigation evidence of the vulnerability of women in the modelling profession was startling and models are at high risk of eating disorders. ~ Denise Kingsmill, Baroness Kingsmill
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Denise Kingsmill, Baroness Kingsmill
The tattoo artist inflicts pain and I take it. With each breath I count to one again. Each inhale, each exhale, time passes in the smallest of pieces, and pieces still smaller than those.
This is how you count a life. This is how you go through it. Each second of hurt is a second that's already passed, one you never have to go through again. I have counted in pieces that small, when walking from the bed to the fridge seemed an insurmountable goal. I have counted my breaths, my steps, my eye-blinks, my hiccups, the tiny pulse in my thumb. And when I started getting tattooed, two of the things I used to need were gone: to write on myself, and to find irrelevant things to count. A second of intense pain is the most profound thing you can live through. And another, and another, and another, and then you know what it is to feel, and to struggle through that feeling one small agonizing increment at a time, and if you know that, you know what it is to live with mental illness. ~ Stacy Pershall
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Stacy Pershall
Girls developed eating disorders when our culture developed a standard of beauty that they couldn't obtain by being healthy. When unnatural thinness became attractive, girls did unnatural things to be thin. ~ Mary Pipher
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Mary Pipher
I'm a writer. I was just diagnosed with PTSD. This unfortunate diagnosis, I assure you will not stop me. ~ A.K. Kuykendall
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by A.K. Kuykendall
Deception' is the word I most associate with anorexia and the treachery which comes from falsehood. The illness appears inviting. It would seem to offer something to those unwary or unlucky enough to suffer from it - friendship, a get-out, or a haven - when, in fact, it is a trap. ~ Carol Lee
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Carol Lee
I was a very lonely child and it's funy but the first word that comes to my head is "starved". I felt starved of affection, starved of love and I felt that it wasn't OK to ask for it. Maybe there was a sense that if I deserved it, it would be there. There must be something I'd done which meant I didn't deserve it. ~ Carol Lee
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Carol Lee
My reflection followed me mercilessly in mirrors, car doors, shop windows. I lived in a world of circus mirrors, the grotesque distortion of my body looking back at me everywhere. ~ Bethany Pierce
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Bethany Pierce
In more ancient times the life was simpler, but now the discovery of all these different medicines for curing dyspepsia shows that people are suffering from this disease. In this country we know that there are so many kinds of pills and medicines used. We even have those in India now. These things show that not only in America but in all the countries of the world we have to recourse to artificial means for necessary nutrients because people are not aware of right rules of diet. It is better to follow the right rules of diet in the beginning in order to avoid any kind of artificial medicines later on. ~ Virchand Gandhi
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Virchand Gandhi
[ ... ] and in addition to the feeling of being full there was another more terrifying one, as if a hundred appetites were raging out of control within her. She couldn't explain it, but she felt as if everything was in chaos and something awful was going to happen. She had eaten and now something terrible would occur. ~ Steven Levenkron
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Steven Levenkron
I've never had body issues, I've never had an eating disorder. I've never had to go on a diet and that's because of Weight Watchers. ~ Ginnifer Goodwin
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Ginnifer Goodwin
I was struggling with anorexia, and one of the biggest problems with an eating disorder is you don't realize you have it. And you can't heal until you realize there's a problem. ~ Lindsey Stirling
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Lindsey Stirling
This will sound strange, and yet I'm sure it was the point: it was a bit like being high. That, for me, anyway, had always been the attraction of drugs, to stop the brutal round of hypercritical thinking, to escape the ravages of an unoccupied mind cannibalizing itself. ~ Norah Vincent
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Norah Vincent
When faced with choosing between attributing their pain to "being crazy" and having had abusive parents, clients will choose "crazy" most of the time. Dora, a 38-year-old, was profoundly abused by multiple family perpetrators and has grappled with cutting and eating disordered behaviors for most of her life. She poignantly echoed this dilemma in her therapy:
I hate it when we talk about my family as "dysfunctional" or "abusive." Think about what you are asking me to accept - that my parents didn't love me, care about me, or protect me. If I have to choose between "being abused" or "being sick and crazy," it's less painful to see myself as nuts than to imagine my parents as evil. ~ Lisa Ferentz
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Lisa Ferentz
Childhood trauma does not come in one single package. ~ Asa Don Brown
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Asa Don Brown
An eating disorder is serious and it's a disease, and I don't think you can lightly say that someone has a disease unless they're openly telling you that they do. ~ Nicole Richie
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Nicole Richie
Instead of showing visibly distinct alternate identities, the typical DID patient presents a polysymptomatic mixture of dissociative and posttraumatic stressdisorder (PTSD) symptoms that are embedded in a matrix of ostensibly non-trauma-related symptoms (e.g., depression, panic attacks, substance abuse, somatoform symptoms, eating-disordered symptoms). The prominence of these latter, highly familiar symptoms often leads clinicians to diagnose only these comorbid conditions. When this happens, the undiagnosed DID patient may undergo a long and frequently unsuccessful treatment for these other conditions.
- Guidelines for Treating Dissociative Identity Disorder in Adults, Third Revision, p5 ~ James A. Chu
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by James A. Chu
I keep telling myself that I'm a human being, an imperfect human being who's not made to look like a doll, and that who I am as a person is more important than whether at that moment I have a nice figure. ~ Emma Watson
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Emma Watson
I think I just realized that having a problem - an eating disorder - it's not healthy and you can actually die from that. I realized it's not worth it and you just need to be healthy. ~ Nicole Polizzi
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Nicole Polizzi
We live in a world where most people still subscribe to the belief that shame is a good tool for keeping people in line. Not only is this wrong, but it's dangerous. Shame is highly correlated with addiction, violence, aggression, depression, eating disorders, and bullying. ~ Brene Brown
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Brene Brown
Independence is the luxury of all those people who are too confident, and busy, and popular, and attractive to be just plain old lonely. And make no mistake, lonely is absolutely the worst thing to be. Tell someone that you've got a drink problem, or an eating disorder, or your dad died when you were a kid even, and you can almost see their eyes light up with the sheer fascinating drama and pathos of it all, because you've got an issue, something for them to get involved in, to talk about and analyse and discuss and maybe even cure. But tell someone you're lonely and of course they'll seem sympathetic, but look very carefully and you'll see one hand snaking behind their back, groping for the door handle, ready to make a run for it, as if loneliness itself were contagious. Because being lonely is just so banal, so shaming, so plain and dull and ugly. ~ David Nicholls
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by David Nicholls
You have an eating disorder if diet and food negatively impact your life and add stress where natural calm energy would usually be. ~ Scott Abel
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Scott Abel
I work with a great deal of discipline, although I usually take on more than I can handle and often have to extend due dates. I have always been appalled by bohemianism because of its laziness, disorder, and moral weakness. I understand that this way of living is a response to the fact of human frailty, but it leans too far in one direction. Being a little more buttoned up doesn't mean that you'll get so brittle that you'll break. Nor does it mean that you don't understand tragedy, loss, and, most of all, human limitation.

I am more than well aware of those things and I feel very strongly, but on the other hand I like to run ten miles and return to a spotless well-ordered room, and I like my shirts heavily starched. When I used to go on a long run on Sunday morning when I lived on the Upper West Side, I would pass thousands and thousands of people in restaurants eating . . . (I won't say this word, because I hate it so much, but it rhymes with hunch, and it's a disgusting meal that is supposed to be both breakfast and lunch). There they were - having slept for five hours while I was doing calisthenics and running - unshaven (the women too), bleary eyed, surrounded by newspapers scattered as if in a hamster cage, smoking noxious French cigarettes, and drinking Bloody Marys while they ate huge quantities of fat. They looked to me like a movie version of South American bandits. I would never want to be like that. I prefer to live like a British soldier. ~ Mark Helprin
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Mark Helprin
I have a history of eating disorders but, as a mother, you think of being an example to your child. I'm so much more balanced than I was. ~ Geri Halliwell
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Geri Halliwell
There may not be any romance to mental illness but who needs romance when the preferable route is agency? The prevailing conversation around mental health issues is agency and the lack thereof on the part of the mentally ill. But what do you do if you're a paid-up member of the mentally ill populace in question? Do you curl up into a ball and give up? No, you look for solutions. Ultimately, it's about keeping despair at bay and sometimes simple things like running, taking up a hobby, doing charity work, painting or, in my case, writing can be a galvanizing part of the recovery process. Keeping the brain and the body active can give life a semblance of pleasure and hope. This is what writing has done for me. I took every traumatic element of my condition and channelled it into something useful. ~ Diriye Osman
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Diriye Osman
My disorder thrives in isolation -
my recovery grows in authentic communication. ~ Christina Sophia Pearson
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Christina Sophia Pearson
It is a visual temper tantrum. You are making an ineffective statement about this and that, a grotesque, self-defeating mockery of cultural standards of beauty, societal misogyny. It is a blow to your parents, at whom you are pissed. ~ Marya Hornbacher
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Marya Hornbacher
When clients relinquish symptoms, succeed in achieving a personal goal, or make healthier choices for themselves, subsequently many will feel anxious, guilty, or depressed. That is, when clients make progress in treatment and get better, new therapists understandably are excited. But sometimes they will also be dismayed as they watch the client sabotage her success by gaining back unwanted weight or missing the next session after an important breakthrough and deep sharing with the therapist. Thus, loyalty and allegiance to symptoms - maladaptive behaviors originally developed to manage the "bad" or painfully frustrating aspects of parents - are not maladaptive to insecurely attached children. Such loyalty preserves "object ties," or the connection to the "good" or loving aspects of the parent. Attachment fears of being left alone, helpless, or unwanted can be activated if clients disengage from the symptoms that represent these internalized "bad" objects (for example, if the client resolves an eating disorder or terminates a problematic relationship with a controlling/jealous partner). The goal of the interpersonal process approach is to help clients modify these early maladaptive schemas or internal working models by providing them with experiential or in vivo re-learning (that is, a "corrective emotional experience"). Through this real-life experience with the therapist, clients learn that, at least sometimes, some relationships can be different and do not have to follow th ~ Edward Teyber
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Edward Teyber
In some ways, coming to terms with myself and working toward recovery has been like saying "I love you" to someone but keeping a loaded gun hidden in your back pocket, just in case that person pisses you off enough. ~ Kiera Van Gelder
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Kiera Van Gelder
Being thin created intense anxiety that I wouldn't be able to maintain that weight for life, and I couldn't. ~ Jenni Schaefer
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Jenni Schaefer
Because of media portrayals, clinicians may believe that dissociative identity disorder presents with dramatic, florid alternate identities with obvious state transitions (switching). These florid presentations occur in only about 5% of patients with dissociative identity disorder.(20) How ever, the vast majority of these patients have subtle presentations characterized by a mixture of dissociative and PTSD symptoms embedded with other symptoms, such as post-traumatic depression, substance abuse, somatoform symptoms, eating disorders, and self-destructive and impulsive behaviors.(2,10) ~ Bethany L. Brand
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Bethany L. Brand
I again invoke my favorite analogy for eating disorders: abusive lovers. And what do you do when someone is in an abusive relationship? You don't allow visitation rights, weekly dates. You don't put them in the vicinity of or let the abuser flirt with them. You keep them the fuck away. ~ Kelsey Osgood
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Kelsey Osgood
But who am I if I'm not Janie the bulimic? Bulimia has become so much a part of me that I can't remember what it felt like not to purge. It's been this secret that I have hidden from my parents and my friends (well, except for Nancy) and the rest of the world. It's the way I can let off the pressure of always feeling like I'm not smart enough, I'm not thin enough, not pretty enough, not funny enough, just plain not enough enough. ~ Sarah Darer Littman
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Sarah Darer Littman
You can arrange your schedule so you have enough time to eat. The place and teh food should be appropriate. Tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are. Tell me where you eat, and I will tell you who you are. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Thich Nhat Hanh
A bulimic person's shame may lead her to try to hide not only her eating-disorder behaviors but also her basic needs and yearnings. She may wish that her needs and desires did not exist and may try to act as if she does not need or want anything or anyone. When that attempt inevitably fails, she may wish that others could magically read her mind and respond to her needs and wants without her having to ask for anything. To avoid the shame of expressing her needs and desires, she turns to food, rather than relationships, for comfort. ~ Sheila M. Reindl
Eating Disorder Recovery quotes by Sheila M. Reindl
I want everyone that has been abused by someone in their childhood to know that you can get past it. Having DID is not the end of the world; it's the beginning of your new life. DID allows the victim of exceptional abuse the ability to "forget" the abuse and continue living. Without it, I may have gone crazy as a teen and spent my life in a as a teen and spent my life in a psychiatric hospital. ~ Dauna Cole
