Anyone? On Snow's visit before the Victory Tour, he challenged me to erase any doubts of my love for Peeta. "Convince me," Snow said. It seems, under that hot pink sky with Peeta's life in limbo, I finally did. And In doing so, I gave him the weapon he needed to break me. ~ Suzanne Collins
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Suzanne Collins
You're not so tough. No tougher than the man whose blood will spill from your veins. ~ Dawn M. Turner
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Dawn M. Turner
So, teaching him only that which she loved, not that which she had been taught, Janet read to Gibbie of Jesus, and talked to him of Jesus, until at length his whole soul was full of the Man, of His doings, of His words, of His thoughts, of His life. Almost before he knew, he was trying to fashion his life after that of the Master.

Janet had no inclination to trouble her own head, or Gibbie's heart, with what men call the plan of salvation. It was enough to her to find that he followed her Master. ~ George MacDonald
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by George MacDonald
No, look, there's a blue box. It's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. It can go anywhere in time and space and sometimes even where it's meant to go. And when it turns up, there's a bloke in it called The Doctor and there will be stuff wrong and he will do his best to sort it out and he will probably succeed 'cause he's awesome. Now sit down, shut up, and watch 'Blink'. ~ Neil Gaiman
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Neil Gaiman
I like all my things to go right."
"That's not how the world works."
"It's how it should work," I say. I like plans that go smoothly. That's the beauty I believe in. Nothing is better than when things go exactly how I expect."
"I know that's what you like," he says, eyes squinting out the sun to peer down at me. "And there's comfort in that, sure. But there's comfort in knowing that when your plans fall apart, you can survive. That the worst thing imaginable can happen, but you can get through it. That's why I like to read horror fiction. It's not about the monsters. It's about the hero surviving them and living to tell the tale. ~ Jenn Bennett
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Jenn Bennett
We all have a central fiction about ourselves, a favored delusion about talent or untapped potential. Most of us hang on to it as if it were a lifesaver, even though the obsession with it is often the very thing that drags us down and prevents us from fulfilling some lesser but more obtainable goal. ~ Stephen McCauley
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Stephen McCauley
The government silenced a lotta those fellas. They even erased some of 'em's memory. They've spent a ton of money on all that alien technology research. It's why the federal deficit's so big. And then there's Elvis. ~ Angela Mullins
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Angela Mullins
From the first she showed a curious sensitivity to what, I suppose, may be called the 'influences' of the place. She said it 'smelled' of ghosts and warlocks. ~ A. Merritt
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by A. Merritt
The writer who position is Christian, and probably also the writer whose position is not, will begin to wonder at this point if there could not be some ugly correlation between our unparalleled prosperity and the stridency of these demands for a literature that shows us the joy of life. He may at least be permitted to ask if these screams for joy would be quite so piercing if joy were really more abundant in our prosperous society. ~ Flannery O'Connor
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Flannery O'Connor
Goodness is funny because it draws you to it while curiously possessing you with the untrammelled desire to turn it into something bad. ~ Sophie Villalobos
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Sophie Villalobos
Honest, hopelessly romantic old-fashioned gentleman seeks lady friend who enjoys elegant dining, dancing and the slow bloom of affection. ~ Claire Cook
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Claire Cook
The sun was bobbing on the horizon, just peeking over. Its light shimmered on the sand behind you, making your body look like it was glowing ... like it had a kind of aura. ~ Lucy Christopher
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Lucy Christopher
One last characteristic of the memoir that is important to recognize is one which also applies to essays, and which Georg Lukacs described as "the process of judging." This may seem problematic to some, since...we connect it with 'judgmental,' often used nowadays as a derogatory word. But the kind of judgment necessary to the good personal essay, or to the memoir, is not that nasty tendency to oversimplify and dismiss other people out of hand but rather the willingness to form and express complex opinions, both positive and negative.

If the charm of memoir is that we, the readers, see the author struggling to understand her past, then we must also see the author trying out opinions she may later shoot down, only to try out others as she takes a position about the meaning of her story. The memoirist need not necessarily know what she thinks about her subject but she must be trying to find out; she may never arrive at a definitive verdict, but she must be willing to share her intellectual and emotional quest for answers. Without this attempt to make a judgment, the voice lacks interest, the stories, becalmed in the doldrums of neutrality, become neither fiction nor memoir, and the reader loses respect for the writer who claims the privilege of being the hero in her own story without meeting her responsibility to pursue meaning. Self revelation without analysis or understanding becomes merely an embarrassment to both reader and writer. ~ Judith Barrington
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Judith Barrington
Nicotine addicted, persecuted, her day is a maddening circle of tea and biscuits, baking, smoking, the necessary fiction of the housewife. ~ James Claffey
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by James Claffey
A great novel is concerned primarily with the interior lives of its characters as they respond to the inconvenient narratives that fate imposes on them. Movie adaptations of these monumental fictions often fail because they become mere exercises in interior decoration. ~ Richard Schickel
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Richard Schickel
Both men were pictures of the kind of grief that cauterizes open wounds in memory and turns them into black scars. ~ B.V. Lawson
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by B.V. Lawson
We're a bundle of incompatible parts, and we make up stories about ourselves to disguise the fact. The mental unity of the individual is a fiction. There is simply, in the human machine, a multitude of loosely linked behaviour systems which take control of the body and participate in a common delusion of being one single self ~ David Lodge
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by David Lodge
Fiction and non-fiction are only different techniques of story telling. For reasons I do not fully understand, fiction dances out of me. Non-fiction is wrenched out by the aching, broken world I wake up to every morning. ~ Arundhati Roy
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Arundhati Roy
The best fiction is far more true than any journalism. ~ William Faulkner
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by William Faulkner
Don't let the whys have it. Don't let them take advantage of you. They'll crush your heart and steal your peace and mess with your mind and wrap around you so tight you won't be able to breathe. Don't le the whys ruin your life, child. Every time they try to sneak up, push them aside and move forward. ~ Amy Matayo
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Amy Matayo
You didn't win. You didn't win the overall battle. I did, because I am making the choice to forgive you and let go of your wicked ways. I am walking to the light. As I walk to the light to cleanse my soul, I want you to know that all I ever wanted you to do was to… ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
When all the details fit in perfectly, something is probably wrong with the story. ~ Charles Baxter
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Charles Baxter
Whether I like it or not, most of my images of what various historical periods feel, smell, or sound like were acquired well before I set foot in any history class. They came from Margaret Mitchell, from Anya Seton, from M.M. Kaye, and a host of other authors, in their crackly plastic library bindings. Whether historians acknowledge it or not, scholarly history's illegitimate cousin, the historical novel, plays a profound role in shaping widely held conceptions of historical realities. ~ Lauren Willig
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Lauren Willig
Cam shook his head. 'Do you ever listen to how much crazy shit comes out of your mouth?'
'Nope.' I hooked my fingers into his waistband and pulled him closer. 'Nobody does. That's why I remain undiagnosed.' ~ Lisa Henry
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Lisa Henry
We believe that nonfiction should contain only information that's true. Journalists and nonfiction author can't know what a person thinks or feels or believes---they only know what the person says and writes and does. If an author tells you someone's inner thoughts, move that book to the fiction shelf. ~ Bill Dedman
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Bill Dedman
People don't like us, my dear. The idea that someone who can play with their emotions, who can "mystically" get them to do certain things, makes them uncomfortable. What they do not realize - and what you must realize - is that manipulating is at the core of our social interaction. (...) Think about it. What is a man doing when he seeks the affection of a young lady? Why, he is trying to manipulate her to regard him favorably. What happens when two old friends sit down for a drink? They tell stories, trying to impress each other. Life as a human being is about posturing and influence. This isn't a bad thing, in fact, we depend upon it. These interactions teach us how to respond to others. ~ Brandon Sanderson
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Brandon Sanderson
Why do Second Amendment advocates assume every time a well-meaning legislator suggests common-sense gun control legislation, politicians must be coming for our guns? ~ Mark M. Bello
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Mark M. Bello
I'm not afraid of dying. I'm afraid I'll never get a chance to live! ~ A.A. Bell
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by A.A. Bell
These words on the screen represented her latest project, an attempt at a series of commercial, discreetly feminist crime novels. She had read all of Agatha Christie at eleven years old, and later lots of Chandler and James M.Cain. There seemed no reason why she shouldn't try writing something in between, but she was discovering once again that reading and writing were not the same-you couldn't just soak it up then squeeze it out again. She found herself unable to think of a name for her detective, let alone a cohesive original plot, and even her pseudonym was poor: Emma T. Wilde? She wondered if she was doomed to be one of those people who spend their lives trying things. She had tried being in a band, writing plays and children's books, she had tried acting and getting a job in publishing. Perhaps crime fiction was just another failed project to place alongside trapeze, Buddhism and Spanish. She used the computer's word counter feature. Thirty-five words, including the title page and her rotten pseudonym. Emma groaned, released the hydraulic lever on the side of her office chair and sank a little closer to the carpet. ~ David Nicholls
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by David Nicholls
In the first 27 years of my life, I never had written a single non-technical word. I went to engineering college and went to business school. I never knew I could write fiction of any form. ~ Karan Bajaj
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Karan Bajaj
I think fiction lends itself to messiness rather than the ideal, and plays well with the ironies surrounding what happens versus what should happen. And yes, I suppose I was interested in that story in the gap between memory itself, the real business of being alive, and the imagination. ~ Colm Toibin
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Colm Toibin
I had worked in fiction a lot before I started making documentaries, but when I was around 32 or 33-years-old I suddenly got so fed up with the world of fiction, which is so money-centered. ~ Pirjo Honkasalo
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Pirjo Honkasalo
Science fiction has done a really good job of scaring us into thinking that computers shouldn't get too smart, because as soon as they get really smart, they're going to take over the world and kill us, or something like that. But why would they do that? ~ Luis Von Ahn
Dystpoia Fiction quotes by Luis Von Ahn
