Never before had a woman put such agonizing poetry on canvas as Frida did ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
One of the reasons that I went to Mexico aside from the Maya and the pre-Columbian aspect of it was that I wanted to work with [Diego] Rivera, which I did, on a mural that he was painting at the time. But at some point I realized that I wasn't going to be a political artist, it just wasn't in my repertoire. ~ Michelle Stuart
Diego Rivera quotes by Michelle Stuart
A tour of the Mexico City of Diego Rivera and Frieda Kahlo led by Barbara Kingsolver would be nice. And I certainly wouldn't turn down a tour of Johannes Vermeer's Delft led by Tracey Chevalier. ~ Cathy Marie Buchanan
Diego Rivera quotes by Cathy Marie Buchanan
If I ever loved a woman, the more I loved her, the more I wanted to hurt her. Frida was only the most obvious victim of this disgusting trait. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
Wild Times
Since Mexico accepted communism as a legitimate political party during the 1920's and allowed refugees greater flexibility of thought, it became a haven from persecution. Moreover, living in Mexico was less costly than most countries, the weather was usually sunny and no one objected to the swinging lifestyle that many of the expats engaged in. It was for these reasons that Julio Mella from Cuba, Leon Trotsky from Russia and others sought refuge there. It also attracted many actors, authors and artists from the United States, many of whom were Communist or, at the very least were "Fellow Travelers" and had leftist leanings. Although the stated basic reason for the Communist Party's existence was to improve conditions for the working class, it became a hub for the avant-garde, who felt liberated socially as well as politically. The bohemian enclave of Coyoacán now a part of Mexico City, where Frida Kahlo was born, was located just east of San Angel which at the time was a district of the ever expanding City. It also became the gathering place for personalities such as the American actor Orson Welles, the beautiful actress Dolores del Río, the famous artist Diego Rivera and his soon-to-be-wife, "Frida," who became and is still revered as the illustrious matriarch of Mexico. ~ Hank Bracker
Diego Rivera quotes by Hank Bracker
Through her paintings, she breaks all the taboos of the woman's body and of female sexuality. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
I recommend her to you, not as a husband but as an enthusiastic admirer of her work, acid and tender, hard as steel and delicate and fine as a butterfly's wing, lovable as a beautiful smile, and as profound and cruel as the bitterness of life. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
My cubist paintings are my most Mexican. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
I am an atheist and I consider religions to be a form of collective neurosis. I am not an enemy of the Catholics, as I am not an enemy of the tuberculars, the myopic or the paralytics; you cannot be an enemy of the sick, only their good friend in order to help them cure themselves. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
An artist is above all a human being, profoundly human to the core. If the artist can't feel everything that humanity feels, if the artist isn't capable of loving until he forgets himself and sacrifices himself if necessary, if he won't put down his magic brush and head the fight against the oppressor, then he isn't a great artist. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
I've never believed in God. But I believe in Picasso. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
I know now that he who hopes to be universal in his art must plant in his own soil. Great art is like a tree, which grows in a particular place and has a trunk, leaves, blossoms, boughs, fruit, and roots of its own. The more native art is, the more it belongs to the entire world, because taste is rooted in nature. When art is true, it is one with nature. This is the secret of primitive art and also of the art of the mastersMichelangelo, Czanne, Seurat, and Renoir. The secret of my best work is that it is Mexican. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
You too know that all my eyes see, all I touch with myself, from any distance, is Diego. The caress of fabrics, the color of colors, the wires, the nerves, the pencils, the leaves, the dust, the cells, the war and the sun, everything experienced in the minutes of the non-clocks and the non-calendars and the empty non-glances, is him. ~ Frida Kahlo
Diego Rivera quotes by Frida Kahlo
July 13, 1954 was the most tragic day of my life. I had lost my beloved Frida forever. To late now I realized that the most wonderful part of my life had been my love for Frida. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
Looking back upon my work today, I think the best I have done grew out of things deeply felt, the worst from a pride in mere talent. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
As an artist I have always tried to be faithful to my vision of life, and I have frequently been in conflict with those who wanted me to paint not what I saw but what they wished me to see. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
The first thing I encountered on entering the museum was the earliest steam engine built in England. As I walked on, marveling at each successive mechanical wonder, I realized that I was witnessing the history of machinery, as if on parade, from its primitive beginnings to the present day, in all its complex and astounding elaborations.
Henry Ford's so-called "pile of scrap iron" was organized not only with scientific clarity but with impeccable, unpretentious good taste. Relics of the times associated with each machine were displayed beside it. To me, Greenfield Village, inside and out, was a visual feast. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
From seven in the morning until half past one the next morning
that's quite a record time for a visitor to stay at a museum," [Henry Ford] continued. "It proves that you may be even more interested in mechanics than I am. And you almost have to be a fanatic to compete with me. That's certainly something!" he exclaimed, grinning broad approval of our common bond. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
As [William] Valentiner noted in his uncompleted memoirs Remembering Artists, [Diego] Rivera's [Detroit Industry] murals rooted the Detroit Institute of Arts to the many-faceted jewel of its central court because of the harmonious, fertile relationship between "the industrialist" and "the artist." Rivera remarked to Valentiner how especially struck he was that "Edsel had none of the characteristics of the exploiting capitalist, that he had the simplicity and directness of a workman in his won factories and was like one of the best of them." Their relationship was like the murals themselves, a superb expression of pluralism, toleration, and empathy for the other, and of a cosmopolitan sense of all the Americas, not just of the United States of America or Detroit alone. ~ John Dean
Diego Rivera quotes by John Dean
Marx made theory ... Lenin applied it with his sense of large-scale social organization ... And Henry Ford made the work of the socialist state possible. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
You have to trust a TRUE compliment as muc as a critique. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
I did not know it then, but Frida had already become the most important fact in my life. And would continue to be, up to the moment she died, 27 years later. ~ Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Rivera
Depression makes someone blind with all the blessings and drags her down to all stresses and failed promises. But here's the thing, sometimes, she doesn't really need someone who can understand what she's going through, she just needs you to be there. ~ Joena San Diego
Diego Rivera quotes by Joena San Diego
Well, when I was a kid, I grew up in San Diego next to the ocean. The ocean was my friend - my best friend. ~ Robert Ballard
Diego Rivera quotes by Robert Ballard
Eva will be impressed, too. Bet you're counting on that heading into the weekend." Damn right. I would need all the points I could earn when I met up with Eva in San Diego. "She's about to go out of town. And you have to head into the conference room before they get too restless in there. I'll join you as soon as I can." He stood. "Yes, I heard. Your mother's here. Let the wedding insanity begin. Since you're free this weekend, how about we round up some of the usual suspects at my place tonight? It's been a while, and your bachelor days are numbered. Well, technically they're over, but no one else knows that." And he was bound by attorney-client privilege. It took me a beat to decide. "All right. What time?" "Eight-ish." I nodded, then caught Scott's eye. He got ~ Sylvia Day
Diego Rivera quotes by Sylvia Day
You must miss New San Diego. I heard they finally finished the Obama Memorial Bridge. ~ Lee Strauss
Diego Rivera quotes by Lee Strauss
You already made it this far and God is still going to take you way farther. ~ Joena San Diego
Diego Rivera quotes by Joena San Diego
I love hot yoga. I go to a sculpt class with weights. That's really good for the core and it's obviously super hot. I love cardio bar. I'm not a big gym fan, so I like to go to classes. ~ Naya Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Naya Rivera
I hope I will be remembered as a good father and a fair employer. And a good host, of course! ~ Diego Della Valle
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Della Valle
I think that the, Ted Cruz is not even a natural-born citizen, argument will resonate for at least the next few weeks. ~ Geraldo Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Geraldo Rivera
I don't just think regular season. I think playoffs. World Series. That's how I think. ~ Mariano Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Mariano Rivera
Thank you for accepting me as I am, with my virtues and defects. ~ Jenni Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Jenni Rivera
[Historian] Kevin Starr has written that "the San Diego free speech battles revealed the depths of reaction possible in the threatened middle- and lower-middle classes of California." He argues that vigilantes were recruited from an anxious petty bourgeoisie, "who were uncertain and insecure in what they had gained or thought they had gained by coming to California." As in late Weimar Germany, "the oligarchy, which is to say, the upper-middle and upper classes, loathed and feared the [Industrial Workers of the World]; but oligarchs did not take to the streets as vigilantes. They did, however, encourage the lower-middle classes to do such work. ~ Justin Akers Chacon
Diego Rivera quotes by Justin Akers Chacon
How am I supposed to be this honest? I know you're not a Magic 8 Ball. You're just some lady that wrote a book. I fall asleep with that book in my arms because words protect hearts and I've got this ache in my chest that won't go away. I read Raging Flower and now I dream of raised fists and solidarity marches led by matriarchs fueled by café con leche where I can march alongside cigar-smoking doñas and Black Power dykes and all the world's weirdos and no one is left out. And no one is living a lie. ~ Gabby Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Gabby Rivera
I got two older brothers and two younger sisters, and we grew up in the country, and we were a little feral. So as long as the car didn't end up in the rhubarb and you didn't get caught for doing whatever you were doing, you were fine. ~ Diego Klattenhoff
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Klattenhoff
I used to stand on the corner in San Diego with poems sticking out of my hip pocket, asking people if there was a place where I could read poems. The audience is half of the poem. ~ Juan Felipe Herrera
Diego Rivera quotes by Juan Felipe Herrera
I speak of the human heart, not a logic puzzle." -Diego de Gama ~ Julia DeBarrioz
Diego Rivera quotes by Julia DeBarrioz
Messi I think is like me, he is the best in the world along with Ronaldinho. ~ Diego Maradona
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Maradona
Chris and I told the story of how we met in American Sniper.
Briefly, I was living in Long Beach at the time. A girlfriend wanted to go down to San Diego--nearly a two-hour drive--to check out some bars and relax. I almost didn't go; it was a long drive and I was tired.
But I went. We ended up in a bar in Coronado, where I found myself drinking Scotch and offering sarcastic comebacks to an admittedly good-looking but obnoxious young man hitting on me.
The man's friend came over and interrupted us, joking that I was abusing his friend.
Now this was a handsome man. A bit over six feet, solidly built, he had a warm smile and broad shoulders to go with a sweet Texas accent and an easygoing, aw-shucks manner that instantly melted my cynical heart.
His name was Chris Kyle. ~ Taya Kyle
Diego Rivera quotes by Taya Kyle
One thing about these storms, we know how disruptive things can be when we depend on the system to keep working. What would happen if the terrorists do it? Knock down the power, destroy bridges, cut the water supply? ~ Geraldo Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Geraldo Rivera
Definitely directing is the thing I like the most because this is where everything you know can be used. It's the most personal process ever. It's the most demanding one, but again, rewarding. ~ Diego Luna
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Luna
His anger seemed out of proportion to the crime. Men. Give them an orgasm and they want ... well, probably more orgasms. ~ Kate Meader
Diego Rivera quotes by Kate Meader
You just said that you decapitated the major cartels," one of the senators says.
"Exactly," Keller says. "And what was the result? An increase in drug exports into the United States. In modeling the war against terrorists, we've been following the wrong model. Terrorists are reluctant to take over the top spots of their dead comrades - but the profits from drug trafficking are so great that there is always someone willing to step up. So all we've really done is to create job vacancies worth killing for."
The other major strategy of interdiction - the effort to prevent drugs from coming across the border - also hasn't worked, he explains to them. The agency estimates that, at best, they seize about 15 percent of the illicit drugs coming across the border, even though, in their business plans, the cartels plan for a 30 percent loss.
"Why can't we do better than that?" a senator asks.
"Because your predecessors passed NAFTA," Keller says. "Three-quarters of the drugs come in on tractor-trailer trucks through legal crossings - San Diego, Laredo, El Paso - the busiest commercial crossings in the world. Thousands of trucks every day, and if we thoroughly searched every truck and car, we'd shut down commerce. ~ Don Winslow
Diego Rivera quotes by Don Winslow
I'm so happy with 'The Blacklist.' Give me more people to shoot and throw them off buildings. ~ Diego Klattenhoff
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Klattenhoff
The boom for luxury goods is unending. There are people who never have to worry about whether they can afford something they like. In one part of the world or another there will always be someone with money to spend on luxury. ~ Diego Della Valle
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Della Valle
The problem is that they are all stars at Madrid. You need someone to carry the water to the well. ~ Diego Maradona
Diego Rivera quotes by Diego Maradona
Didn't you," he asked, "have me
exorcised?"
"Me?" My own voice rocketed up about ten octaves. "Me? Jesse, of course not. I would never do that. I mean, you know I would never do something like that. That kid Jack did it. Your girlfriend Maria made him do it. She was trying to get rid of you. She told Jack you were bothering me, and he didn't know any better, so he exorcised you, and then Felix Diego threw me off the porch roof, and Jesse, they found your body, I mean your bones, and I saw them and I threw up all over the side of the house, and Spike really misses you and I was just thinking, you know, if you wanted to come back, you could, because that's why I've got this rope, so we can find our way back. ~ Meg Cabot
Diego Rivera quotes by Meg Cabot
After about 15 minutes, you feel that you're winning them over. ~ Chita Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Chita Rivera
Basic SEAL training is six months of long, torturous runs in the soft sand, midnight swims in the cold water off San Diego, obstacles courses, unending calisthenics, days without sleep and always being cold, wet and miserable. ~ William H. McRaven
Diego Rivera quotes by William H. McRaven
The number of times I have fallen down is the number of times I have gotten up. ~ Jenni Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Jenni Rivera
Be brave, America. Be soft. Remember to twist the value sometimes and release all the pressure inside. What you've been through doesn't have to be what you are or who you become. ~ Gabby Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Gabby Rivera
I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters particularly to not let their children go out wearing hoodies. ~ Geraldo Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by Geraldo Rivera
Failing should be mandatory in life, but life is so wonderful that failing IS in fact mandatory in life!. Failure makes our heart beat faster and sheds light on our reasoning, it makes us feel alive, puts us to the test, and potentiates us... after making it through failure, we emerge bigger, stronger, better. ~ AnaMaria Rivera
Diego Rivera quotes by AnaMaria Rivera
Hickock whistled and rolled his eyes. "Wow!" he said, and then, summoning his talent for something very like total recall, he began an account of the long ride
the approximately ten thousand miles he and Smith had covered in the past six weeks. He talked for an hour and twenty-five minutes
from two-fifty to four-fifteen
and told, while Nye attempted to list them, of highways and hotels, motels, rivers, towns, and cities, a chorus of entwining names: Apache, El Paso, Corpus Christi, Santillo, San Luis Potosi, Acapulco, San Diego, Dallas, Omaha, Sweetwater, Stillwater, Tenville Junction, Tallahassee, Needles, Miami, Hotel Nuevo Waldorf, Somerset Hotel, Hotel Simone, Arrowhead Motel, Cherokee Motel, and many, many more. He gave them the name of the man in Mexico to whom he'd sold his own 1940 Chevrolet, and confessed that he had stolen a newer model in Iowa. ~ Truman Capote
Diego Rivera quotes by Truman Capote
We see parts of each other, and we put them together. But if I want to see you in totality, you need to move away; we need space between us. Across the street, I can see all of you at once, but then I also see this huge vista of space surrounding you, coming in and compressing you. ~ Diego Giacometti
