There are plenty of team players in government who do whatever the leader says. There are too few difficult members, who have complicated minds, unusual perspectives, the toughness to withstand the party-line barrages and a practical interest in producing results. ~ David Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by David Brooks
You do not have to die this certain day.
Death will abide, will pamper your postponement.
I assure you death will wait. Death has
a lot of time. Death can
attend to you tomorrow. Or next week. Death is
just down the street; is most obliging neighbor;
can meet you any moment.
You need not die today.
Stay here–through pout or pain or peskyness.
Stay here. See what the news is going to be tomorrow.
Graves grow no green that you can use.
Remember, green's your color. You are Spring. ~ Gwendolyn Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Gwendolyn Brooks
This nation was built by men who took risks-pioneers who were not afraid of the wilderness, businessmen who were not afraid of failure, scientists who were not afraid of the truth, thinkers who were not afraid of progress, dreamers who were not afraid of action. ~ Brooks Atkinson
Devincent Brooks quotes by Brooks Atkinson
Some decisions cannot be made in advance of the time that will demand them. We cannot always anticipate the way in which things will happen and therefore cannot anticipate what we will do. We must accept that. ~ Terry Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Terry Brooks
You can be a knockout in that dress. But if you only wanted to talk jobs, money, and social standing, then you wouldn't be sexy. Now, the girl who refuses to back down - that is sexy. ~ Kathleen Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Kathleen Brooks
Because of my comedic-influence growing up, Mel Brooks, Jim Carrey, Steve Martin. A lot of Jeff comedic-influences included Charlie Chaplin and physical comedians of the silent-era. What we were able to do together is to show all these major influences but make it into our own comedy. We've seen the stereotypical boy-meets-girl story a hundred thousand times. ~ J. Robert Spencer
Devincent Brooks quotes by J. Robert Spencer
that the wars of the past were slowly being forgotten. Shea believed that one could turn his back on the past and build a new world with the future, never understanding that the future was inextricably tied to the past, an interwoven tapestry of events and ideas that would never be entirely severed. ~ Terry Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Terry Brooks
Just keep taking chances and having fun. ~ Garth Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Garth Brooks
I didn't act in college, per se, because I didn't want an acting degree. I don't know what you do with that degree. When I was 16, I saw 'Usual Suspects,' and I wanted to be a director as well. So I thought I should go to school for directing and producing, something I knew nothing about. ~ Mehcad Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Mehcad Brooks
A person who is interrupted while performing a task takes 50% more time to complete it and make 50% more errors. ~ David Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by David Brooks
Me!" she exclaimed. "Where are Mr. and Mrs. Webb? They were sitting on my head when I fell in." She ~ Walter R. Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Walter R. Brooks
The more games you coach, the more comfortable you feel. ~ Scott Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Scott Brooks
It is not that the French are not profound, but they all express themselves so well that we are led to take their geese for swans. ~ Van Wyck Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Van Wyck Brooks
Her genius derives from the fact that she was capable of the deepest feeling but also of the most discerning and disciplined thought. ~ David Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by David Brooks
A budget matters to Americans who can't afford to see their taxes go up or lose the jobs that would be destroyed in the process. ~ Susan Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Susan Brooks
Tragedy is when I stub my toe. Comedy is when you fall into an open manhole and die. ~ Mel Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Mel Brooks
The dead walk among us. ~ Max Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Max Brooks
I don't like the idea of the black race being diluted out of existence. I like the idea of all of us being here. ~ Gwendolyn Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Gwendolyn Brooks
Those of our writers who have possessed a vivid personal talent have been paralyzed by a want of social background. ~ Van Wyck Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Van Wyck Brooks
Research by Donald A. Redelmeier and Sheldon M. Singh has found that, on average, Oscar winners live nearly four years longer than nominees that don't win. ~ David Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by David Brooks
Christ is a most precious commodity, he is better than rubies or the most costly pearls; and we must part with our old gold, with our shining gold, our old sins, our most shining sins, or we must perish forever. Christ is to be sought and bought with any pains, at any price; we can not buy this gold too dear. He is a jewel more worth than a thousand worlds, as all know who have him. Get him, and get all; miss him and miss all. ~ Thomas Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Thomas Brooks
The feet of the humblest may walk in the field Where the feet of the Holiest trod, This, then, is the marvel to mortals revealed. ~ Phillips Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Phillips Brooks
If we allow ourselves to be misled by the heresy of paraphrase, we run the risk of doing even more violence to the internal order of the poem itself. By taking the paraphrase as our point of stance, we misconceive the function of metaphor and meter. We demand logical coherences where they are sometimes irrelevant, and we fail frequently to see imaginative coherences on levels where they are highly relevant. ~ Cleanth Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Cleanth Brooks
He had never been in love. He had not known what it would feel like. He understood what the term meant, but his life had not allowed for exploring its possibilities. There had been few he had really loved. His parents; Michael. That was it. And that was love of a different kind. Less intense, less hungry. What he felt for Simralin went so far beyond anything manageable that it shocked him. He could tell himself it was because he had found her beautiful in a way that transcended anything he had ever known. But his attraction to her was a response to so much more. To her self-confidence and way of speaking. To her smile and the quirky way she lifted one eyebrow when she was amused. To the way she carried herself. To the way she looked at him. ~ Terry Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Terry Brooks
People of small calibre are always carping. How affected so-and-so is! Don't you think he is silly? He was certainly quite mistaken about this or that. They are bent on showing their own superiority, their knowledge or their prowess or good breeding. ~ Van Wyck Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Van Wyck Brooks
I'll play out the string and leave baseball without a tear. A man can't play games his whole life. ~ Brooks Robinson
Devincent Brooks quotes by Brooks Robinson
Are you afraid someone will hurt them?" I asked.

She lifted her fork, paused for a moment, seemed to be considering. "No," she said. "Well … I don't know. I guess it's other people. I worry that if I let them out of my sight, other people will see us and think I'm doing something wrong. I feel like it doesn't matter what I think; that if other people think I'm doing something dangerous, then it's dangerous. I suppose I can't quite tell where my own anxieties end and other people's begin. I don't know if I'm afraid for my kids, or if I'm afraid other people will be afraid and will judge me for my lack of fear. ~ Kim Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Kim Brooks
If I had to fault President [Barack] Obama, I would say that sometimes governs like a visitor from a morally superior civilization. ~ David Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by David Brooks
She was not someone's sister, she was not someone's child. She was Dolores and Dolores was the good guys. ~ Bruce Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Bruce Brooks
Pray for powers equal to your tasks. ~ Phillips Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Phillips Brooks
The key factor separating geniuses from the merely accomplished is not a divine spark. It's not I.Q., a generally bad predictor of success, even in realms like chess. Instead, it's deliberate practice. Top performers spend more hours (many more hours) rigorously practicing their craft. ~ David Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by David Brooks
Though true repentance is never too late, yet late repentance is seldom true. ~ Thomas Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Thomas Brooks
I also try to surround myself with people I love - make a family out of the company. So I tend to use the same people over and over. There's a sort of Mel Brooks Repertory Company. ~ Mel Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Mel Brooks
It is God's world still. It has been given to man not absolutely, but in trust, that man may work out in it the will of God; given-may we not say?-just as a father gives a child a corner of his great garden, and says, "There, that is yours; now cultivate it." ~ Phillips Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Phillips Brooks
If you think you can organize your own salvation you are magnifying the very sin that keeps you from it. ~ David Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by David Brooks
He means that even though there is a mathematical possibility that dinosaurs and humans coexist, that possible reality would collapse because the likelihood is so astronomically small. ~ Liana Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Liana Brooks
It did not even occur to David to consult Ruti herself about this, or any other matter. Had he done so, he would have been most surprised by the result. He did not realize it, but his love for his daughter marched hand in hand with a kind of contempt for her. He saw his daughter as a kind-hearteed, dutiful, but vaguely pitiable soul. David, like many people, had made the mistake of confusing "meek" with "weak. ~ Geraldine Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Geraldine Brooks
Australians say 'pissed off.' Pissed means drunk. Piss is alcohol. To take the piss
that means to send someone up, make fun of them. ~ Geraldine Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Geraldine Brooks
All the women who actually drove were mature professionals who had international drivers' licenses they'd acquired overseas. Many ~ Geraldine Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Geraldine Brooks
Brooks wanted to abandon the traditional, linear, dump-and-chase style of hockey that had held sway in North America forever. He wanted to attack the vaunted Russians with their own game, skating with them and weaving with them, stride for high-flying stride. He wanted to play physical, un-yielding hockey to be sure, but he also wanted fast, skilled players who would flourish on the Olympic ice sheet (which is 15 feet wider than NHL rinks) and be able to move and keep possession of the puck and be in such phenomenal condition that they would be the fresher team at the end. ~ Wayne Coffey
Devincent Brooks quotes by Wayne Coffey
Vengeance is one of life's great motivators. ~ K.S. Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by K.S. Brooks
MASS INCREASES

The final paradox of relativity is the increase in mass due to motion. Mass increase has been observed experimentally in particle accelerators, with increases as great as 3000% for particles traveling at over 99.9% the speed of light. How can the mass of an object get bigger just because it's moving?

Intuitive explanation. As we saw in Chapter 2, mass means inertia - i.e., resistance to acceleration. If you push something and it doesn't respond much, then by definition it has a large mass or inertia. Now we just saw that pushing on something that is traveling at close to the speed of light has little effect on its speed because the underlying fields are already moving almost as fast as they can. Thus its resistance to acceleration has become greater and this means its mass has increased. Mass increase is just another way of saying that fields can't propagate faster than c. ~ Rodney A. Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Rodney A. Brooks
I admire wit, but I have no real liking for it. It has been too often employed against me. ~ Charles Stephen Brooks
Devincent Brooks quotes by Charles Stephen Brooks
I want to kick-start your imagination and let you discover the places it can take you. ~ Terry Brooks
