The captain put his fingers to his temples as if he had a headache. "So, let me get this straight. Edgar, an immortal, who I assume is as unscrupulous as his sisters, tried to take that bracelet from you…"
"He did take it," she corrected.
"I thought you said Zmey kept him from doing so."
"No. Edgar did snatch it from me at first, but Zmey made him give it back. I guess because King Wennergren gifted it to me. That means no one else is allowed to have it - that is, unless I give it away."
"So it's good that you had Zmey there to help."
"Well….not exactly," she hemmed again.
"Not exactly, again?" Derian's face tightened with frustration. He pressed harder on his temples.
"Zmey protects the bracelet because he has to, but he doesn't care much for me." She hesitated before uttering the next sentence. "He actually tried to kill me."
"What? What! Why? Eena!"
"It's okay, really, I'm fine! Naga protects me from those other dragons."

She grinned with pure satisfaction. "Wild huh? Derian's not going to believe me when I tell him." Eena cocked her head when Ian laughed out loud. "What?" she asked, a note of offense in her voice.
"Of course Derian will believe you. When does anything ever happen to you that isn't unreal?"

She shuttered at the thought of the Braetic stumbling across her in her underclothes.
"Cale," Eena said in another attempt to convince the stranger. Somehow she managed to sidestep Ian's effort to halt her, and she approached the man. "I am not messing around with my protector. I am, and always have been, true and faithful to Derian. It's just……a lot of weird things have happened lately."
The Braetic looked willing to consider a good excuse. "Such as?"
"Well," she started, casting a furtive glance at Ian. He was shaking his head, conveying strong disapproval. She ignored him.
"Okay, well…..I've been fighting these immortals who are bent on using me to break free from an imprisoning gem where they were sentenced to stayed locked up for eternity. They nearly annihilated a world of Viiduns - that's how awful they are! But one of these immortals has control over my necklace, and her brother keeps transporting me and my protector all over Moccobatra in search of pieces to ~ Richelle E. Goodrich
Derian pulled the blanket snug around himself. "This is my added assurance."
Eena wrinkled her nose as if she thought his answer was odder than his actions. "It's your what?"
"If you recall the last time we were here standing in this very spot, you pelted me with neumberries." He held up a single berry before popping it into his mouth. "I doubt you would risk soiling your blanket, so I figure wrapping it around me this way I'm pretty much assured safety from any potential attack."
He winked playfully, and she laughed out loud.
"I'm afraid you don't know me half as well as you think," she announced. Aiming low, she flung a sizable berry at his calf. It hit its mark.
"Whoa, whoa!" He lowered the blanket to cover his legs.
"You can't hide yourself entirely, Derian," she said, aiming for his face. He ducked, raising the blanket like a shield in the process.
Another round of ammunition pelted his ankles before he decided it was time to fight back. Eena found herself bound up in her own blanket, arms wrapped securely at her sides. She laughed nonstop, unable to move within his strong hold. Derian leaned forward until their noses touched, and then he kissed her giggles silent. He kept her in the blanket, snug and close to him, but Eena managed to wriggle an arm free and drape it around his neck, holding his lips in reach. She uttered a quick count in between kisses.
"Seven," she breathed.

"Me?" Edgar gaped at her with a clearly fake look of innocence.
"Yes, you."
"And what about you? When will you stop tormenting him?" Edgar moved past the young queen to approach the unmoving captain. He circled the man as though he were checking out a statue on display
"I'm not tormenting him; why would you say that?"
"You have the poor guy believing you actually intend to marry him." Edgar stopped to fix the captain's collar, raising it up high and stiff around his neck.
"I do intend to marry him." Eena followed her immortal watchdog and folded down the captain's collar, repositioning it as it had been.
"Oh please," Edgar groaned. "You've had two opportunities to do so, and on both occasions you turned him down." Edgar elevated the captain's elbow - adjusting him like a mannequin - leaving it in an awkward position. "The council expressed a desire for you to marry, and you nearly hyperventilated over the mere suggestion. And just recently, due to his own paranoia, Derian all but begged you to marry him. Your refusal couldn't have been more swift or more adamant."
Eena returned the captain's elbow to his side as she retorted, "I'm only seventeen, Edgar! I have no desire to marry anyone right now. But when I am ready, Derian will be my husband."
Edgar took hold of the captain's outreaching arm and shoved it forcefully down. "He will not."

"But if he hadn't influenced you, we would be enjoying a pleasant dinner again, telling stories and laughing. I'm sure that would be the case. You would be happy……and so would I."
Eena chuckled without amusement.
"You have to admit we shared some very enjoyable evenings, didn't we? There's really no reason we can't put this whole mess behind us and start from where we left off." He sounded genuinely serious.
"You forget," she reminded him, "I heard your conversation with the Ghengats. This isn't about Derian, it's about you."
"Alright," he admitted with an acquiescent sigh, "so I'm not everything you'd hoped for. But really, what man can ever live up to any woman's terribly high expectations?"
This got her attention. She almost stood up to face him, but decided it wasn't worth the effort. Leaning forward, she retorted, "Expecting a man to respect you, to be honest with you, and, oh yes, to not be a shameless murderer - I don't think those are overly high expectations!"
He shrugged, casually excusing his faults. "Nobody's perfect."

The room fell quiet. Eena didn't move. Derian could see how her breathing continued smoothly in and out just as before.

"True," Derian assured him. "Absolutely the correct etiquette - to her face. However, well ... When I first met Firekeeper, less than a year ago, her relationships with animals fell into pretty much two categories: those you ate and those you befriended. I remember that she thought we were pretty clever for bringing horses along so we wouldn't need to hunt our meat. It took me a while to show her they had other uses. ~ Jane Lindskold

"All I'm trying to say is that if you hadn't used those powers in the first place, Gemdorin would never have known about them, the dragon's heart would never have been uncovered, and consequently you would never have had to abuse those powers to defeat him. Then we wouldn't be in this predicament right now."

Recognizing Ian's voice, Eena turned to find him approaching her from behind. He was entirely clad in body armor and gauntlets, cradling an open-faced helmet in one arm. Painted on his chest plate was a flaming, gold sword. From his side hung a leather sheath, a golden hilt peeking from the top.
"I'm glad you're back. You are going to stay and watch us play, aren't you?" He looked hopeful she'd say yes.
Eena smiled brightly. "I didn't know you were talented enough to be on a dueling team. Nice sword," she teased.
Ian blushed a degree. "Thanks. They call us the Savage Warriors!" He rasped their team name in a semi-ferocious voice. "Jerin's team captain."
She laughed at the showy designation. "And who's your challenger today?"
"The Dragon Slayers - Derian's team."
Eena's face fell. "Derian is playing?" She groaned internally, knowing she should've guessed as much. This was starting to look like another setup. ~ Richelle E. Goodrich
I've worn Niki's pants for two days now. I thought a third day in the same clothes might be pushing it."
Ian shrugged with indifference. "It might send Derian through the roof, but it doesn't bother me. Wear what you want to wear."
Eena wrinkled her nose at him. "Do you really feel that way or are you trying to appear more laissez-faire than Derian?"
"More laissez-faire?"
"Yes. That's a real word."
"Two words actually," he grinned. "Laissez faire et laissez passer, le monde va de lui même!" He coated the words with a heavy French accent. Eena gawked at him.
"Since when do you speak French?"
"I don't." Ian chuckled. "But I did do some research in world history the year I followed you around on Earth. Physics was a joke, but history - that I found fascinating."
Slapping a hand against her chest, Eena exclaimed, "I can't believe it! Unbeknownst to me, Ian actually studied something in high school other than the library's collection of sci-fi paperbacks!"
He grimaced at her exaggerated performance before defending his preferred choice of reading material. "Hey, popular literature is a valuable and enlightening form of world history. You would know that if you read a book or two."
She ignored his reproach and asked with curiosity, "What exactly did you say?"
"In French?"
"Duh, yes."
"Don't 'duh' me, you could easily have been referring to ~ Richelle E. Goodrich
What secrets?" Eena blurted out.
Kira answered the question by defensively listing them out on her fingers. "How about the fact that Derian was coming for you in a few short days, or the fact that Gemdorin was forcing you to search for some magic gem we were all unaware existed. How about the knowledge of your unusual powers that you stupidly used to infect the Ghengats, which was also a secret you kept to yourself until it was discovered by Gemdorin, making it too late for us to do anything about preventing you from being beaten half to death! You hide things as if you think your abilities are so superior to what the rest of us can possibly contribute!"
Eena shook her head adamantly. "That's not what I think…"
"It's how you behave. It's how you come across to everyone. Your selfish actions speak a helluva lot louder than your hollow words or your foolish intentions."
The young queen felt a rise of tears burn her eyes. "My intentions are not foolish. All I ever meant to do was protect those around me."
"By keeping us in the dark? That's not protection, girl. That's neglect."
Eena sniffled as fresh waterworks ran down her cheeks. Her face twisted up, confused. "People get hurt when they're involved in my problems."
"In our problems."
"No! My problems!" she insisted.
Kira threw up her arms. "There you go being all selfish again!"

I'll tell you what," she said, prepared to make a deal. "Let's see how your 'diplomacy' would profit us. If you can give me a decent solution to a pretend situation, I'll agree to have you accompany me instead of Shanks. Although, I don't know how wise it is to leave a Viidun captain on the Kemeniroc in your absence."
Derian agreed to the test. "Okay, what's your question?"
She thought hard for a moment; her eyes scrunching in concentration, lips pulled down to one side. Then, as a crooked grin spread across her lips, she set up an imagined scenario.
"Pretend we're down on the planet with this King Wennergren when he graciously offers to walk us through his cherished garden. While we're there he begs me to touch his favorite, award-winning flower, hoping my powers will make it thrive and blossom. But for some strange reason it doesn't respond to me the way plants do on our world. Instead of thriving, the flower withers and dies right before his shocked and furious eyes. Now pretend he's easily offended and has a horrible temper…"
Derian cut it. "You have no idea what his temperament is like."
"I know. That's not the point." Her eyes scolded him for interrupting. "Just pretend that he becomes outraged by my actions, assuming that I purposefully destroyed his prized plant. The angry king orders both of us to be seized and thrown into his deep, dark, inescapable dungeon. But, somehow we manage to dodge his line of soldiers a ~ Richelle E. Goodrich
Eena turned aside, breathing shallowly as her mind raced with questions. She was glad he couldn't read the confusion that swooped her up like a passing tornado. Was it even possible to genuinely love more than one man?
Yes. Oh, yes.
She knew it because her heart irrefutably felt it. She loved Derian; it was true. She wasn't trying to convince herself of it, no matter what Edgar said. She yearned deeply for her captain.
But she loved Ian too. She always had. Only she purposefully, appropriately, had set those feelings aside when he made the decision to pursue Angelle.
But Angelle was gone now.
