Democracy is a continuous, open process of civility.
A democracy can never be "done"; updating democracy can never be over.

Democracy can be nothing else but a continuous process, because we use it to organize our life, and life is nothing but a continuous process.

Democracy can be compared to an operating system or an anti-virus software; if it does not get perpetually updated, it becomes obsolete very fast.

Trusting the updates or the "improvements" of democracy to the elected and the owned mass media is like trusting the updates of an anti-virus program to virus creators; it defeats the purpose of updates or improvements. ~ Haroutioun Bochnakian
Defeats quotes by Haroutioun Bochnakian
The new politicians resembled hyenas and foxes. In both hemispheres, the people quickly forgot. Compassion and rage shared the fate of autumn flowers, upon which settles hoarfrost: they had faded, withered, then died under the weight of rent, prices, inflation, soap operas and talk shows, family life, victories and defeats in stadiums. ~ Filip Florian
Defeats quotes by Filip Florian
Socrates refused to neatly define the self he had in mind, just as Buddha refused to use a word like "God." Their reasons were the same: it defeats the truth to use words, since words imply that you know what you are looking for. Instead, truth is an experience. It cannot be anticipated, any more than one can anticipate, at age five, what it will be like to go to college, get married, have children. Experience is fresh and new (or should be); thus truth is fresh and new. From there, it's a small step to demanding that God be fresh and new. ~ Deepak Chopra
Defeats quotes by Deepak Chopra
Every soul ... comes into the world strengthened by the victories or weakened by the defeats of its' previous life. Its' place in this world as a vessel appointed to honor or dishonor, is determined by its' previous merits or demerits. Its' work in this world determines its' place in the world which is to follow this. ~ Origen
Defeats quotes by Origen
We all know them - the unstructured person whose every action seems aimless and the totally organized person whose every action defeats some purpose. ~ Robert Breault
Defeats quotes by Robert Breault
Many people try to avoid looking back. To be sure, there is a wrong way to look back; it is wrong to look back at past sins and failures and defeats. That can only make you fail even more today. But it is good to look back to see where we have been and what the Lord has done in us and through us. ~ Warren W. Wiersbe
Defeats quotes by Warren W. Wiersbe
Now we've a real intellectual impasse. Our reason, which is supposed to make things more intelligible, seems to be making them less intelligible, and when reason thus defeats its own purpose something has to be changed in the structure of our reason itself. ~ Robert M. Pirsig
Defeats quotes by Robert M. Pirsig
How much better it is that you defeat anger than that it defeats itself! ~ Seneca.
Defeats quotes by Seneca.
You can build the Empire State Building. Train the Prussian army. Elevate the hierarchy of a totalitarian state higher than the throne of the Most High.
But there are still people whose moral superiority defeats your own. ~ Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Defeats quotes by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Pride defeats its own end, by bringing the man who seeks esteem and reverence into contempt. ~ Henry Bolingbroke
Defeats quotes by Henry Bolingbroke
When finally the sky grew ink-black, the trees were visible only as their swaying branches blotted out the stars that crossed in blazing showers, as sometimes they do. The language of the stars, seldom read and heeded less, told beautifully and in silence of all the victories that had ever been won and all the defeats ever suffered. In uncountable lines of light across the widest sphere, the stars spoke of everything notable even down to a leaf blowing rhythmically in the wind. ~ Mark Helprin
Defeats quotes by Mark Helprin
Toombo. Look at the roundness of your belly. Look at the heaviness of your legs!' Toombo looks. 'God makes fat birds and small birds, trees that are wide and trees that are thin, like wattle. He makes big kernels and little kernels. I am a big kernel. One does not argue with God.' The theosophism defeats Otieno; ~ Beryl Markham
Defeats quotes by Beryl Markham
Learn from each one of your defeats; your losses must be as close to you as your victories. ~ Ashot Nadanian
Defeats quotes by Ashot Nadanian
When your youth goes, your beauty will go with it, and then you will suddenly discover that there are no triumphs left for you, or have to content yourself with those mean triumphs that the memory of your past will make more bitter than defeats. ~ Oscar Wilde
Defeats quotes by Oscar Wilde
I have no interest in anybody's life that way so it defeats me why people go to that length to pry. ~ John Byrne
Defeats quotes by John Byrne
The warrior of light knows that everything around him - his victories, his defeats, his enthusiasm and his despondency - form part of his Good Fight. ~ Paulo Coelho
Defeats quotes by Paulo Coelho
Ka is a wheel; its one purpose is to turn. The spin of ka always brings us back to the same place, to face and reface our mistakes and defeats until we can learn from them. When we learn from the past, the wheel continues to move forward, towards growth and evolution. When we don't, the wheel spins backward, and we are given another chance. If once more we squander the opportunity, the wheel continues its rotation towards devolution, or destruction. ~ Robin Furth
Defeats quotes by Robin Furth
Saga of Tristan and Danika. The battles and the victories. The defeats and the triumphs. The tragedies and the trials. Somewhere in the middle, I had him tearing up, ~ R.K. Lilley
Defeats quotes by R.K. Lilley
There are some defeats more triumphant than victories. ~ Michel De Montaigne
Defeats quotes by Michel De Montaigne
We believe half-instinctively that evil always defeats itself in the long run. Pacifism is founded largely on this belief. Don't resist evil, and it will somehow destroy itself. But why should it? What evidence is there that it does ... unless conquered from the outside by military force? ~ George Orwell
Defeats quotes by George Orwell
The evasion of responsibility is the major cause of most peoples frustrations and defeats. ~ Ayn Rand
Defeats quotes by Ayn Rand
The lowest form of war is To attack Cities. Siege warfare Is a last resort ... The Skillful Strategist Defeats the enemy Without doing battle, Captures the city Without laying siege, Overthrows the enemy state Without protracted war.34 ~ Henry Kissinger
Defeats quotes by Henry Kissinger
It's about bums on seats. If nobody wants to listen to what you are doing, it kind of defeats the purpose really, doesn't it? ~ James Grant
Defeats quotes by James Grant
Because after having overcome the defeats - and we always overcome them - we feel much more euphoria and confidence. In the silence of our hearts, we know we are worthy of the miracle of life. Each day, each hour, is part of the Good Combat. We begin to live with enthusiasm and pleasure. Very intense and unexpected suffering begins passing faster than apparently tolerable suffering: that drags on for years, eroding our soul without us noticing what is happening - until one day we can no longer free ourselves of the bitterness, and it accompanies us for the rest of our lives. ~ Paulo Coelho
Defeats quotes by Paulo Coelho
Risks can lead to great victories or defeats. Even if you are defeated, the lesson will be valuable for the next stage of life. ~ Lailah GiftyAkita
Defeats quotes by Lailah GiftyAkita
Life is not all about profundity. Life is about little things that piss you off, little triumphs, little defeats. So, you can't spend all your time being profound. ~ Timothy Spall
Defeats quotes by Timothy Spall
Were you to read the British press today, you would learn that the British Empire never forgets its defeats. ~ Robert Trout
Defeats quotes by Robert Trout
It is in general more profitable to reckon up our defeats than to boast of our attainments. ~ Thomas Carlyle
Defeats quotes by Thomas Carlyle
A history of literature, unlike history as such, ought to list only victories, for its defeats are no victory for anyone. ~ Julien Gracq
Defeats quotes by Julien Gracq
you learn more from defeats than you do from victories ~ Alex Ferguson
Defeats quotes by Alex Ferguson
Sometimes defeats are the best outcomes. To react to adversity is a quality. ~ Alex Ferguson
Defeats quotes by Alex Ferguson
The prosaic fact of the universe's existence alone defeats both the pragmatist and the romantic. ~ Stephen King
Defeats quotes by Stephen King
One is not a great one because one defeats or harms other living beings. One is so called because one refrains from defeating or harming other living beings. ~ Gautama Buddha
Defeats quotes by Gautama Buddha
I do not have it in for relativism. In many respects I find it a fascinating, even attractive, alternative. It engenders epistemological humility, defeats an arrogant pomposity in belief, even promotes a sort of democratic ideal in matters of knowledge. Perhaps its most comforting feature is that it requires no hard work at all in the matter of justifying beliefs. ~ David L. Wolfe
Defeats quotes by David L. Wolfe
That was what he wanted to tell his audience at Cambridge. He divided classical satirists into two classes - fierce men starving in garrets, and renouncing popularity and circulation to dwell in tubs, and calm good-livers "who tell amusingly the kind of truth that no one has ever denied." But for the present century the right spirit, he believed, was self-satire, the ability to see humor in the constant small defeats of life, and "the power to be startled by nothing, however extravagant." The subject, in the end, turned out to be more relevant than it had seemed, as anyone could have told who had heard Eddie and Wilfred laughing together. ~ Penelope Fitzgerald
Defeats quotes by Penelope Fitzgerald
You see, we may encounter many defeats, but we must not be defeated. It may even be necessary to encounter the defeat, so that we can know who we are. So that we can see, oh, that happened, and I rose. I did get knocked down flat in front of the whole world, and I rose. I didn't run away – I rose right where I'd been knocked down. And then that's how you get to know yourself. You say, hmm, I can get up! I have enough of life in me to make somebody jealous enough to want to knock me down. I have so much courage in me that I have the effrontery, the incredible gall to stand up. That's it. That's how you get to know who you are. ~ Maya Angelou
Defeats quotes by Maya Angelou
You want much from life, and life will give you much, but there are things it won't give you, and victory today is one of them. This will be one defeat; more will follow. Victories will follow too. You are not in this life to count up victories and defeats. You are in it to love and be loved. You are loved with your head down. You will be loved whether you finish or not. ~ Matthew Thomas
Defeats quotes by Matthew Thomas
Every life viewed from the inside is a series of defeats. ~ George Orwell
Defeats quotes by George Orwell
To try to fashion something from suffering, to relish our triumphs, and to endure defeats without resentment: all that is compatible with the faith of a heretic. ~ Walter Kaufmann
Defeats quotes by Walter Kaufmann
Aeschylus and Plato are remembered today long after the triumphs of Imperial Athens are gone. Dante outlived the ambitions of thirteenth century Florence. Goethe stands serenely above the politics of Germany, and I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over cities, we too will be remembered not for victories or defeats in battle or in politics, but for our contribution to the human spirit. ~ John F. Kennedy
Defeats quotes by John F. Kennedy
Running keeps me at a physical peak and sharpens my senses. It makes me touch and see and hear as if for the first time. Through it I get through the first barrier to true emotions, the lack of integration with the body. Into it I escape from the pettiness and triviality of everyday life. And, once inside, stop the daily pendulum perpetually oscillating between distraction and boredom...It is the swing from boredom to anxiety, from depression to worry, that exhausts and defeats us. The sure knowledge that we can be much more than we are frustrates us. ~ George Sheehan
Defeats quotes by George Sheehan
Although my speaking will reflect the grace and mercy I've been offered and humbly accepted, I don't have to say much because words only go so far. At the end of the day, it will not be the year of my birth or the year of my death that will matter; it will be that hyphen in the midst of it all that will display how I lived my life; will tell a full and complete story; will say more than my mouth could utter.

My actions, my trials, my triumphs, my defeats, my victories - my life will preach louder than an auditory testimony ever could.

I am working on the person I want to remember. ~ Elissa Gabrielle
Defeats quotes by Elissa Gabrielle
We are all wounded. But wounds are necessary for his healing light to enter into our beings. Without wounds and failure and frustrations and defeats, there will be no opening for his brilliance to tickle in and invade our lives. Failures in life are courses with very high tuition fees, so I don't cut classes and miss my lessons: on humility, on patience, on hope, on asking others for help, on listening to God, on trying again and again and again. ~ Bo Sanchez
Defeats quotes by Bo Sanchez
Historically, it is traditional and habitual for us to be inadequately prepared. This is the combined result of a number factors, the character of which is only indicated: democracy, which tends to make everyone believe that he knows it all; the preponderance, inherent in democracy, of people whose real interest is in their own welfare as individuals; the glorification of our own victories in war and the corresponding ignorance of our defeats - and disgraces - and of their basic causes; the inability of the average individual to understand the cause and effect not only in foreign but domestic affairs, as well as his lack of interest in such matters. Added to these elements is the manner in which our representative form of government has developed as to put a premium on mediocrity and to emphasize the defects of the electorate already mentioned ~ Ernest J. King
Defeats quotes by Ernest J. King
There's a victory, and defeat; the first and best of victories, the lowest and worst of defeats which each man gains or sustains at the hands not of another, but of himself. ~ Plato
Defeats quotes by Plato
It is a symbol evoking a reality that touches the depths of the person ... the light of goodness that vanquishes evil, of love that overcomes hatred, of life that defeats death. ~ Pope Benedict XVI
Defeats quotes by Pope Benedict XVI
Cannabis never killed anybody and it's use is widespread. You cant stop it. The law defeats itself because all the efforts to stop drugs coming in only drives up the prices and then gangsters move in to push the drugs. If they legalised there wouldn't be gangsters and huge profits ... The police are gradually decriminalising the possession of cannabis because they realise there's not much point prosecuting ~ James Pickles
Defeats quotes by James Pickles
In any form of art designed to appeal to large numbers of people, ... [t]he rich man is usually 'bad', and his machinations are invariably frustrated.:; 'Good poor man defeats bad rich man' is an accepted formula. ~ George Orwell
Defeats quotes by George Orwell
Conserving fuel is fine, and it was great in the past. The problem is that the drivers don't have to do it. It's all done electronically. You sit there, and it saves fuel for you, and that defeats the purpose. ~ Jacques Villeneuve
Defeats quotes by Jacques Villeneuve
Sometimes I wonder about depression, is it the fear of life or the fear of death?"

"Depression is the fear of senses and thoughts, only the prolonged passion can beat it, be it.. passion for life, life after death, or anything else which is something.. in particular!"

"But depression is not a fear, it gives you courage to end your life or to live hopelessly."

"Ending one's life is the easiest way to end a battle. Going with the flow is not an achievement, though. But leading a life with all of its fortunes, aspirations, ambitions, defeats, losses, and misfortunes is the real courage.. Only because you are eligible to live, you are granted the grace of life… You have it, you can manage it; that's the secret people refuse to believe. ~ Noha Alaa El-Din
Defeats quotes by Noha Alaa El-Din
Life consists Of propositions about life. The human Revery is a solitude in which We compose these propositions, torn by dreams, By the terrible incantations of defeats And by the fear that the defeats and the dreams are one. The whole race is a poet that writes down The eccentric propositions of its fate. ~ Wallace Stevens
Defeats quotes by Wallace Stevens
Lies erase. Lies are power. Power to be had by you. Truth is relative, no? Power defeats truth, paper, scissors. Are you faux real? ~ David David Katzman
Defeats quotes by David David Katzman
Apart from such considerations - which as predictions are of little avail and less consolation - there remains the fact that the crisis of our time and its central experience have brought forth an entirely new form of government which as a potentiality and an ever-present danger is only too likely to stay with us from now on, just as other forms of government which came about at different historical moments and rested on different fundamental experiences have stayed with mankind regardless of temporary defeats - monarchies, and republics, tyrannies, dictatorships and despotism. ~ Hannah Arendt
Defeats quotes by Hannah Arendt
I believe it is the inability of beginning writers to achieve at least a certain degree of detachment from their writing that defeats so many of them before they even get started. Without this distancing, any criticism of your writing will seem devastating, even incapacitating, whereas with the proper amount of detachment it will seem merely cruel and unusual punishment. ~ Patrick F. McManus
Defeats quotes by Patrick F. McManus
Today's patience can transform yesterday's discouragements into tomorrow's discoveries. Today's purposes can turn yesterday's defeats into tomorrow's determination. ~ William Arthur Ward
Defeats quotes by William Arthur Ward
I think that the worst unpleasantness of age is not its final fact ... but the tediousness of preparation, the accumulating number of defeats. ~ Freya Stark
Defeats quotes by Freya Stark
The presence of even a single poor child on the street means a million defeats for mankind. ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Defeats quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
Wherever the ignorant triumphs, over there the greatest defeats are on the way! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Defeats quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
I believe that it isn't victories but defeats that promote nationalism. ~ Orhan Pamuk
Defeats quotes by Orhan Pamuk
I am a series of small victories and large defeats. ~ Charles Bukowski
Defeats quotes by Charles Bukowski
In the silence of consciousness I asked myself:
why did I reject my life? And I answer
Die Erde überwältigt mich:
the earth defeats me. ~ Louise Gluck
Defeats quotes by Louise Gluck
The good news is, shame has a kryptonite. Shame cannot survive under the power of love. Love defeats shame, every time.

Love says that no matter what you did which may have caused guilt, you are loved. You are lovable. You are love itself. That is the truth. And because of that, you have nothing to be ashamed of. ~ Stephen Lovegrove
Defeats quotes by Stephen Lovegrove
[Abusers] blame the world - circumstances, other people - for their defeats, misfortune, misconduct, and failures. The abuser firmly believes that his life is swayed by currents and persons over which he has no influence whatsoever (he has an external locus of control).

But there are even subtler variants of this psychological defense mechanism. Not infrequently an abuser will say: "I made a mistake because I am stupid", implying that his deficiencies and inadequacy are things he cannot help having and cannot change. This is also an alloplastic defense because it abrogates responsibility.

Many abusers exclaim: "I misbehaved because I completely lost my temper." On the surface, this appears to be an autoplastic defense with the abuser assuming responsibility for his misconduct. But it could be interpreted as an alloplastic defense, depending on whether the abuser believes that he can control his temper. ~ Sam Vaknin
Defeats quotes by Sam Vaknin
I always disagree, however, when people end up saying that we can only combat Communism, Fascism or what not if we develop an equal fanaticism. It appears to me that one defeats the fanatic precisely by not being a fanatic oneself, but on the contrary by using one's intelligence. ~ George Orwell
Defeats quotes by George Orwell
Wisdom grows along with age. When we are young we feel we can conquer anything. As we age we realize it's a journey, with all its victories and defeats, sorrows and joys, that matter the most. ~ Donna Fletcher
Defeats quotes by Donna Fletcher
Will power defeats all powers ~ Aftab Alam
Defeats quotes by Aftab Alam
Since this often seems to come up in discussions of the radical style, I'll mention one other gleaning from my voyages. Beware of Identity politics. I'll rephrase that: have nothing to do with identity politics. I remember very well the first time I heard the saying "The Personal Is Political." It began as a sort of reaction to defeats and downturns that followed 1968: a consolation prize, as you might say, for people who had missed that year. I knew in my bones that a truly Bad Idea had entered the discourse. Nor was I wrong. People began to stand up at meetings and orate about how they 'felt', not about what or how they thought, and about who they were rather than what (if anything) they had done or stood for. It became the replication in even less interesting form of the narcissism of the small difference, because each identity group begat its sub-groups and "specificities." This tendency has often been satirised - the overweight caucus of the Cherokee transgender disabled lesbian faction demands a hearing on its needs - but never satirised enough. You have to have seen it really happen. From a way of being radical it very swiftly became a way of being reactionary; the Clarence Thomas hearings demonstrated this to all but the most dense and boring and selfish, but then, it was the dense and boring and selfish who had always seen identity politics as their big chance.
Anyway, what you swiftly realise if you peek over the wall of your own immediate neighbourhood or envi ~ Christopher Hitchens
Defeats quotes by Christopher Hitchens
On a man's journey, everything has its place. Our failures, heartbreaks, defeats, and victories; our wounds, dreams, and passions; our stops and our starts-all have a place in our story, and all have a place in our transformation from shadow men to real men. Everything has meaning, and everything belongs. ~ Richard Rohr
Defeats quotes by Richard Rohr
Indeed is it not the case that in this matter of sanctification our tendency is always to start with ourselves, instead of starting with God? I have got this sin that is worrying me and always getting me down, this sin that defeats me, and my tendency is to say, 'What can be done about this sin, this problem of mine. How can I get rid of this thing? How can I get peace?' I start with myself and my problem, and as certainly as I do that when I am considering this doctrine of sanctification, I am sure, in some shape or form, to end by regarding God as merely an agency who is there to help me solve my problems. And this is a totally unscriptural approach to the almighty ever blessed God. ~ D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Defeats quotes by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
You are the best only till someone defeats you. ~ Sipendr
Defeats quotes by Sipendr
Some defeats are more satisfying than victories. ~ Chandrapal Khasiya
Defeats quotes by Chandrapal Khasiya
I do take defeats well. However, I don't just leave them at that. I take time to analyze why I was defeated and make sure I don't make the same mistakes again. I think it is important to learn from one's mistakes. ~ Rain
Defeats quotes by Rain
A passionately lived life is not always comfortable. Going for it involves being open to all of life - the joys, the sorrows, the mundane as well and the magic, the splendid victories, the most abject defeats. You might even stop closing your eyes during the scary parts of the movie. ~ Nicholas Lore
Defeats quotes by Nicholas Lore
As soon as you concern yourself with the "good" and "bad" of your fellows, you create an opening in your heart for maliciousness to enter. Testing, competing with, and criticizing others weakens and defeats you. ~ Morihei Ueshiba
Defeats quotes by Morihei Ueshiba
Jesus did not dispute [Satan] ... our Lord quoted Scripture, and that's one thing the devil can't stand! The Scripture defeats him every time. ~ Billy Graham
Defeats quotes by Billy Graham
I am the sum of all the words I've said to you,
I am the sum of all the things I've done to you.
I'm the sum of all my right decisions and all my mistakes,
all my triumphs and all my defeats,
I'm all the moments I dared
and all those I was scared,
all the ugliness I created
and all the beauty I destroyed. ~ Angelos Michalopoulos
Defeats quotes by Angelos Michalopoulos
I also know that every person faces adversity in life. Abraham Lincoln held this seat in Congress in one term. But few faced as many defeats in his personal, business and public life as he did, ~ Aaron Schock
Defeats quotes by Aaron Schock
They who shared none of my defeats should take no pride in celebrating my successes. ~ Adhish Mazumder
Defeats quotes by Adhish Mazumder
It is you who are unpoetical," replied the poet Syme. "If what you say of clerks is true, they can only be as prosaic as your poetry. The rare, strange thing is to hit the mark; the gross, obvious thing is to miss it. We feel it is epical when man with one wild arrow strikes a distant bird. Is it not also epical when man with one wild engine strikes a distant station? Chaos is dull; because in chaos the train might indeed go anywhere, to Baker Street or to Bagdad. But man is a magician, and his whole magic is in this, that he does say Victoria, and lo! it is Victoria. No, take your books of mere poetry and prose; let me read a time table, with tears of pride. Take your Byron, who commemorates the defeats of man; give me Bradshaw, who commemorates his victories. Give me Bradshaw, I say! ~ G.K. Chesterton
Defeats quotes by G.K. Chesterton
You can't work three hours a week and make $100,000. Get rich quick doesn't work. Crock pot mentality always defeats microwave mentality! ~ Dave Ramsey
Defeats quotes by Dave Ramsey
If you see yourself in a favorable light, if your image of yourself is pleasant, if this visual concept of yourself cannot be shaken by temporary defeats, then you have reached the goal achieved by the most fortunate. Not everyone reaches this mental state; in fact, many people do not even believe it is possible. Happiness and peace of mind are a matter of consciousness. We must create the inner-harmony we desire. This type of awareness is not an accident, it comes from study and an understanding that we are truly creative. ~ Bob Proctor
Defeats quotes by Bob Proctor
Sadly the very thing that strikes us as obvious always defeats our thinking about it in more penetrating ways: just as the Romans said that "the good is the enemy of the better," so too "the self-evident is the enemy of the very process of clarification or understanding," not to mention the enemy of the "transcendent or ultimate." ~ Kenny Smith
Defeats quotes by Kenny Smith
The experiences, the lessons, and the defeats,
They were all necessary for me to be me,
took me a while being blind before i could see,
had to crawl on my knees before i stood on my feet,
once i stood on my feet i found out i had wings,
the flight is amazing, i felt like a king,
and when no one is listening, i found out i can sing,
what happy times and thoughts does it bring,
whatever it takes just make sure you are free,
free to live, and grow like a tree,
The people you love are the branches you need,
its not about the type, the color, or breed,
Live life with ambition, ambition indeed,
Thats what it took, and thats what i need. ~ Michael Perez
Defeats quotes by Michael Perez
The enormous condescension of posterity was the magnificent phrase employed by E. P. Thompson to remind us that we must never belittle the past popular struggles and victories (as well as defeats) that we are inclined to take for granted. ~ Christopher Hitchens
Defeats quotes by Christopher Hitchens
Trust always defeats every rebellion ~ Sunday Adelaja
Defeats quotes by Sunday Adelaja
That Hegelian dialectics should provide a wonderful instrument for always being right, because they permit the interpretations of all defeats as the beginning of victory, is obvious. One of the most beautiful examples of this kind of sophistry occurred after 1933 when the German Communists for nearly two years refused to recognize that Hitler's victory had been a defeat for the German Communist Party. ~ Hannah Arendt
Defeats quotes by Hannah Arendt
Your words, your schedule, your choices, your obedience, the way you savor your victories and the way you swallow your defeats all help to define your life. It is this definition that your children rely on most as they seek to chart their own future. ~ Tim Kimmel
Defeats quotes by Tim Kimmel
One repeated the same old mistakes. Each of us has a blind spot in his thinking that defeats him time and again against all teaching and experience and pain. ~ Ernest Hebert
Defeats quotes by Ernest Hebert
Then rang the war chime, the clang of steel on steel loud over Leavenheath, and there came into my heart again the longing to wipe out the memory of old defeats, and I gripped my axe and shield and waited for my turn to come. ~ Charles W. Whistler
Defeats quotes by Charles W. Whistler
The Masonic fraternity tramples upon our rights, defeats the administration of justice, and bids defiance to every government which it cannot control. ~ Millard Fillmore
Defeats quotes by Millard Fillmore
The defeats, failures of the European proletariat in the mediocre positivism with which timid union bureaucrats and bland parliamentary teams cultivates a... lazy spirit in the masses. A proletariat without more of an ideal of than the reduction of work hours and a salary raise of the few cents will never be capable of grand historic entreprise. ~ José Carlos Mariátegui
Defeats quotes by José Carlos Mariátegui
The original castle back in Edinburgh was the seat of Scottish nationalism. It symbolized everything to the diehard believers. Despite all the changes and defeats they endured, the castle stood solid at the center of their capital. They waited for generations for the Scottish nation to be properly reborn after their Bonnie Prince was lost. There were times when the cause seemed impossible, or even cursed; they regained their independence from the English only to lose it again right away with the formation of Federal Europe. ~ Peter F. Hamilton
Defeats quotes by Peter F. Hamilton
Do we not see that we are inarticulate? That is what defeats us. It is our inability to communicate to another how we are locked within ourselves, unable to say the simplest thing of importance to one another, any of us, even the most valuable, that makes our lives like those of a litter of kittens in a wood-pile. ~ William Carlos Williams
Defeats quotes by William Carlos Williams
Daydreaming defeats practice; those of us who browse TV while working out will never reach the top ranks. Paying full attention seems to boost the mind's processing speed, strengthen synaptic connections, and expand or create neural networks for what we are practicing. ~ Daniel Goleman
Defeats quotes by Daniel Goleman
Twenty aspirin, a little slit alongside the veins of the arm, maybe even a bad half hour standing on a roof: We've all had those. And somewhat more dangerous things, like putting a gun in your mouth. But you put it there, you taste it, it's cold and greasy, your finger is on the trigger, and you find that a whole world lies between this moment and the moment you've been planning, when you'll pull the trigger. That world defeats you. You put the gun back in the drawer. You'll have to find another way. ~ Susanna Kaysen
Defeats quotes by Susanna Kaysen
Oh ... why not?' he smiled. "This valley is a pleasant spot for meditation. I like New England ... it is here that I have experienced some of my greatest successes - and several notable defeats. Defeat, you know, is not such a bad thing, if there's not too much of it ... it makes for humility, and humility makes for caution, therefore for safety.' ("Trace") ~ Jerome Bixby
Defeats quotes by Jerome Bixby
Without defeats, how do you really know who the hell you are? If you never had to stand up to something - to get up, to be knocked down, and to get up again - life can walk over you wearing football cleats. But each time you do get up, you're bigger, taller, finer, more beautiful, more kind, more understanding, more loving. Each time you get up, you're more inclusive. More people can stand under your umbrella. ~ Maya Angelou
Defeats quotes by Maya Angelou
Delays, disappointments and defeats cause quitters to give up in resignation; losers, to give in the frustration; winners, to come through with determination. ~ William Arthur Ward
Defeats quotes by William Arthur Ward
defeat the defeat before the defeat defeats you ~ Sandi Fellman
Defeats quotes by Sandi Fellman
The defeats which many small Red areas have suffered have been due either to the absence of the requisite objective conditions or to subjective mistakes in tactics. ~ Mao Zedong
