One minute you're a happy fourteen-yearold - good at everything you try, popular, fun - the next you're a freak with wings ~ Cynthia Hand
Clara Gardner quotes by Cynthia Hand
Hey, Carrots," he says. ~ Cynthia Hand
Clara Gardner quotes by Cynthia Hand
It wasn't you're fault," I whisper. And then out of self-protection more than anything else, I bring the glory. I don't warn him or anything. I don't damp it down. I bring it. The room fills with light.
"This is what I am," I say, my hair ablaze around my head.
He squints at me. his jaw juts out a little in pure stubbornness. He stands his ground
"I know," he says.
I take a step towards him, close the space between us, put my glowing hand against his cheek. He starts to tremble. "This is what I am," I say again and my wings are out now.
His knees wobble, but he fights it. He puts his hand at my waist, turns me, pulls me closer, which surprises me.
"I can accept that," he whispers, and holds his breath, and leans in to kiss me
His lips brush mine for an instant, and an emotion like victory tears through him, but he pulls away and glances at the front door. Groans.
Christian is standing in the doorway.
"Wow," Tucker says, trying to grin. "You really know how to cramp a guy's style."
His legs give out. He falls to his knees.
My light blinks off. ~ Cynthia Hand
Clara Gardner quotes by Cynthia Hand
I can't leave you," he says hoarsely.
"I can't leave you either," I say, shaking my head. "I can't."
"Then don't," he says, and grabs me behind the neck and kisses me again, and the world is tilting, and everything goes black. ~ Cynthia Hand
Clara Gardner quotes by Cynthia Hand
I meant it, what I said in hell. You're my glory sword, you know that? My truth. ~ Cynthia Hand
Clara Gardner quotes by Cynthia Hand
I wanted to tell you that wherever I am, whatever happens, I'll always think of you, and the time we spent together, as my happiest time. I'd do it all over again, if I had the choice. No regrets. ~ Cynthia Hand
Clara Gardner quotes by Cynthia Hand
Nice tree, he says.
That boy has unexpected depth. ~ Cynthia Hand
Clara Gardner quotes by Cynthia Hand
Tucker snorts. "Sage is a fighter, it spreads over the land like wildfire, sucking up all the water, the nutrients in the earth, until everything else dies. It's a heart little plant, that I'll give it. But it's gray and ugly and ticks love to hide in it. You ever seen a tick?" He glances over at me. The look on my face must be pretty appalled because suddenly he gives and uncomfortable cough and says quietly, "Sage does have a nice smell. ~ Cynthia Hand
Clara Gardner quotes by Cynthia Hand
Hasta la vista, baby, he tells me, and I shake my head and smile at how adorably dorky he can be. His Spanish only comes from Arnold Schwarzenegger. ~ Cynthia Hand
Clara Gardner quotes by Cynthia Hand
Tucker: "Today we ran into a mama grizzly with two cubs at the ridge off Colter Bay and Clara sang to it to make it go away."
Mrs. Avery: You sang to it?
Tucker: Her singing is that bad. ~ Cynthia Hand
Clara Gardner quotes by Cynthia Hand
In 1933, it was in Franklin Roosevelt's political interest to tell Americans the greatest danger was "fear itself." Seventy years later, it was in George W. Bush's political interest to do the opposite: The White House got the support it needed for invading Iraq by stoking public fears of terrorism and connecting those fears to Iraq. ~ Daniel Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by Daniel Gardner
Though we run across exceptions, philosophical novels where explanation holds interest, the temptation to explain is one that should almost always be resisted. A good writer can get anything at all across through action and dialogue, and if he can think of no powerful reason to do otherwise, he should probably leave explanation to his reviewers and critics. The writer should especially avoid comment on what his characters are feeling, or at very least should be sure he understands the common objection summed up in the old saw Show, don't tell. ~ John Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by John Gardner
I am one wing and you are equally the other ~ Clara Ng
Clara Gardner quotes by Clara Ng
You have got to own your days and live them, each one of them, every one of them, or else the years go by and none of them belong to you. ~ Herb Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by Herb Gardner
I like what I like and not what I'm supposed to like because of mass rating. And I very much dislike the things I don't like. ~ Erle Stanley Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by Erle Stanley Gardner
Dr. Clara Immerwahr Haber committed suicide the same night. ~ Richard Rhodes
Clara Gardner quotes by Richard Rhodes
One exemplary act may affect one life, or even millions of lives. All those who set standards for themselves, who strengthen the bonds of community, who do their work creditably and accept individual responsibility, are building the common future. ~ John W. Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by John W. Gardner
At 6:15 she was standing on her front porch watering gardenias and watching another line of thunderstorms split and go around her. The same thing happened almost every day. Some days they came so close all she could smell was the rain. The wind whipped up dust from the fields until it drove like buckshot into the shuddering mesquites, and Clara Nell started to pray. 'Jesus,' she whispered. 'Jesus, Jesus....' But the only thing that came out of the sky was her topsoil. Every day the wind took a little more, and it hadn't rained in almost a year. ~ Andrew Geyer
Clara Gardner quotes by Andrew Geyer
The real key to Jack's [Nicklaus] success was his fantastic ability to score. His drives sometimes went into the rough, but he could plow the ball out of the tallest grass and get it on the green; bad lies simply didn't affect him as they did the others. Jack also got tremendous height with his one-iron and two-iron, which meant that he could stop them better than his rivals. ~ Gardner Dickinson
Clara Gardner quotes by Gardner Dickinson
We must grapple with [the] national ideology [of fascism] explicitly. We still hold to the words "the proletarian has no fatherland," because everything that could make a fatherland into a fatherland is extracted by capitalist exploitation, up to and including the very light of the sun. In spite of this, the proletariat is connected to the material and cultural wealth which is the product of many generations, and which it alone can transfer to coming generations. That is why the proletariat will create its fatherland through its own efforts, by constructing its government and constituting itself as a nation. ~ Clara Zetkin
Clara Gardner quotes by Clara Zetkin
That's what is most satisfying, is having overcome that pain. Pain that is so intense that when you finish, it feels like you're going to die. That's what I wanted, and that's what I got. ~ Clara Hughes
Clara Gardner quotes by Clara Hughes
Her skin smelled of autumn and the wind.
Don't Jacob ...
But it was too late. Clara didn't flinch as he pulled her close. He grabbed her hair, kissed her mouth, and he felt her heart beating as fast as his own.
... Let her go, Jacob. But he kissed her again, and it was his name she whispered, not Will's. ~ Cornelia Funke
Clara Gardner quotes by Cornelia Funke
It's a law of the universe that 87 percent of all people in all professions are incompetent. ~ John Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by John Gardner
Clara: My heart doesn't belong to me anymore. It belongs to Tucker. ~ Cynthia Hand
Clara Gardner quotes by Cynthia Hand
Never be angry with something that can't get angry with you. ~ Jack Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by Jack Gardner
I want to remember it all, the good times and the bad times, the late nights, the boozing, the dancing into dawns, and all the great and not-so-great people I met and loved in those years ... ~ Ava Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by Ava Gardner
my lovers had only ever tended to their own needs. I didn't know that romance and sex were different creatures - one of the soul, one of the body. I had no idea that two souls can feel as if they are joined in one body, as it were, no matter the shape of the bodies involved. Clara ~ Kelly Gardiner
Clara Gardner quotes by Kelly Gardiner
But you knew what would happen. Why would you choose to walk right into a situation where you know the person is going to be hurtful? It kills me to see you do that, and you do it all the time. It's like a form of insanity. - Peter Morrow
You call it insanity, I call it optimism. - Clara Morrow ~ Louise Penny
Clara Gardner quotes by Louise Penny
His friend laughed. 'You missed your calling, Freddie,' he said. 'You should have been one of the aforementioned clergy. Is this what marriage does to you? One shudders at the very idea. ~ Mary Balogh
Clara Gardner quotes by Mary Balogh
From all we have said about plotting in general it should be evident that even in those modern plots in which events happen by laws not immediately visible, as when, for instance, the tattooed man in the circus reveals in the course of a whimsical conversation that he has on his chest a tattoo of the little girl now looking at him, a child he has never before seen, or as when, in Isak Dinesen, a decorous old nun turns abruptly into a monkey
there must be some rational or poetically persuasive basis. ~ John Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by John Gardner
What we want ... is for students to get more interested in things, more involved in them, more engaged in wanting to know; to have projects that they can get excited about and work on over long periods of time, to be stimulated to find things out on their own. ~ Howard Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by Howard Gardner
If I were to speak of war, it would not be to show you the glories of conquering armies but the mischief and misery they strew in their tracks; and how, while they marched on with tread of iron and plumes proudly tossing in the breeze, some one must follow closely in their steps, crouching to the earth, toiling in the rain and darkness, shelterless themselves, with no thought of pride or glory, fame or praise, or reward; hearts breaking with pity, faces bathed in tears and hands in blood. This is the side which history never shows. ~ Clara Barton
Clara Gardner quotes by Clara Barton
I know what's in your mind. I know everything. That's what makes me so sick and old and tired. ~ John Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by John Gardner
All laws are an attempt to domesticate the natural ferocity of the species. ~ John W. Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by John W. Gardner
Ava Gardner was the most beautiful woman in the world, and it's wonderful that she didn't cut up her face. She addressed aging by picking up her chin and receiving the light in a better way. And she looked like a woman. She never tried to look like a girl. ~ Sharon Stone
Clara Gardner quotes by Sharon Stone
You learn at your best when you have something you care about and can get pleasure in being engaged in. ~ Howard Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by Howard Gardner
Hollywood - that's a place where love is viewed both pragmatically and philosophically in the saying, 'Tis better to have loved and divorced than never to have had any publicity at all. ~ Ava Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by Ava Gardner
I knew when I left to go to start my career, you don't want to get in front of a band and say, uh, give me "Stardust" without saying D-flat. ~ Carl Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by Carl Gardner
And," Kay adds as her final touch, "Christian Prescott is my boyfriend."
I dislike her already. ~ Cynthia Hand
Clara Gardner quotes by Cynthia Hand
Clara was that rare combination: she was sensible and sensitive. ~ Louise Penny
Clara Gardner quotes by Louise Penny
I am mad with joy.
At least I think it's joy. Strangers have come, and it's a whole new game. I kiss the ice on the frozen creeks, I press my ear to it, honoring the water that rattles below, for by water they came: the icebergs parted as if gently pushed back by enormous hands, and the ship sailed through, sea-eager, foamy-necked, white sails, riding the swan-road, flying like a bird! O happy Grendel! Fifteen glorious heroes, proud in their battle dress, fat as cows! ~ John Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by John Gardner
Storybook happiness involves every form of pleasant thumb-twiddling; true happiness involves the full use of one's powers and talents. ~ John W. Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by John W. Gardner
Much education today is monumentally ineffective. All too often we are giving young people cut flowers when we should be teaching them to grow their own plants. ~ John W. Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by John W. Gardner
Be confident in who you are, regardless of what you don't have. The more confident you are, the more open you become to share your fears and challenges with your partner. ~ E'yen A. Gardner
Clara Gardner quotes by E'yen A. Gardner
I don't think I'm entirely on board with the 'do what you truly want to do' school of thought. Not without a little more nuance. There has to be an anchor in the wide-open space. Otherwise, 'doing what you truly want' isn't an authentic attempt at exploration -- it's just another hyper-individualistic credo masquerading as something grand. I mean we're all gung ho about pursuing personal freedom, but why do we want it? If we never constructively apply it to something beyond ourselves, and if it doesn't deepen our sense of connection and humanity, then what's the point? ~ Clara Bensen
Clara Gardner quotes by Clara Bensen
You'll need a chaperone. I have no doubt that Great-Aunt Clara would stay at the terrace with you, or perhaps - "

"I'll invite old Mrs. Smedley from the village," Livia said. "She's from a respectable family, and she would enjoy a trip to London."

Aline frowned. "Dearest, Mrs. Smedley is hard of hearing, and as blind as a bat. A less effective chaperone I couldn't imagine."

"Precisely," Livia said, with such satisfaction that Aline couldn't help laughing. ~ Lisa Kleypas
Clara Gardner quotes by Lisa Kleypas
Fame and fortune does not mean anything if you don't have a happy home. ~ Ava Gardner
