Thus Christian humanism is as indispensable to the Christian way of life as Christian ethics and a Christian sociology. ~ Christopher Dawson
Christian Humanism quotes by Christopher Dawson
In principle, to be sure, the Reformation idea of the universal priesthood of all believers meant that not only the clergy but also the laity, not only the theologian but also the magistrate, had the capacity to read, understand, and apply the teachings of the Bible. Yet one of the contributions of the sacred philology of the biblical humanists to the Reformation was an insistence that, in practice, often contradicted the notion of the universal priesthood: the Bible had to be understood on the basis of the authentic original text, written in Hebrew and Greek which, most of the time, only clergy and theologians could comprehend properly. Thus the scholarly authority of the Reformation clergy replaced the priestly authority of the medieval clergy. ~ Jaroslav Pelikan
Christian Humanism quotes by Jaroslav Pelikan
How many winds of doctrine we have known in recent decades, how many ideological currents, how many ways of thinking. The small boat of thought of many Christians has often been tossed about by these waves - thrown from one extreme to the other: from Marxism to liberalism, even to libertinism; from collectivism to radical individualism; from atheism to a vague religious mysticism; from agnosticism to syncretism, and so forth. Every day new sects are created and what Saint Paul says about human trickery comes true, with cunning which tries to draw those into error (cf Ephesians 4, 14). Having a clear Faith, based on the Creed of the Church, is often labeled today as a fundamentalism. Whereas, relativism, which is letting oneself be tossed and 'swept along by every wind of teaching', looks like the only attitude acceptable to today's standards. We are moving towards a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as certain and which has as its highest goal one's own ego and one's own desires. However, we have a different goal: the Son of God, true man. He is the measure of true humanism. Being an 'Adult' means having a faith which does not follow the waves of today's fashions or the latest novelties. A faith which is deeply rooted in friendship with Christ is adult and mature. It is this friendship which opens us up to all that is good and gives us the knowledge to judge true from false, and deceit from truth. ~ Benedict XVI
Christian Humanism quotes by Benedict XVI
what matters is not who initiated but how we responded thereafter. We both responded with affirming words and validating actions. We invested in the relationship equally, together giving and receiving. We kept communication open the whole way through. ~ Debra Fileta
Christian Humanism quotes by Debra Fileta
In consequence of the claims which God is always making on the world the Christian finds himself, by that very fact, involved in a state of permanent revolution. Even when the institutions, the laws, the reforms which he has advocated have been achieved, even if society be re-organized according to his suggestions, he still has to be in opposition, he still must exact more, for the claim of God is as infinite as His forgiveness. ~ Jacques Ellul
Christian Humanism quotes by Jacques Ellul
One difficulty follows another very fast - but God reigns, not chance. ~ Hudson Taylor
Christian Humanism quotes by Hudson Taylor
True Christians delight to read the Scriptures, because they tell them about their beloved Savior. ~ J.C. Ryle
Christian Humanism quotes by J.C. Ryle
You do not have to protect people's pocket books. They'll do a better job of that than you will. ~ Johnny Hunt
Christian Humanism quotes by Johnny Hunt
As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice.
Speeches ~ Adolf Hitler
Christian Humanism quotes by Adolf Hitler
The hinge of history is on the door of a Bethlehem stable. ~ Ralph Washington Sockman
Christian Humanism quotes by Ralph Washington Sockman
Older forms of indentured servanthood and the bond-service of biblical times had often been harsh, but Christian abolitionists concluded that race-based, life-long chattel slavery, established through kidnapping, could not be squared with biblical teaching either in the Old Testament or the New. ~ Timothy Keller
Christian Humanism quotes by Timothy Keller
Pastors do not know enough about every vocational field to know how the gospel influences work in that sector. Clergy and laypeople [must] sit down as equals - each with some knowledge the other does not have - to plan for Christian witness in public life. ~ Timothy J. Keller
Christian Humanism quotes by Timothy J. Keller
The Christian who does not feel that the Virgin Mary is his or her mother is an orphan. ~ Pope Francis
Christian Humanism quotes by Pope Francis
No true Christian can endure in battling unrighteousness unless his heart is aflame with new spiritual affections, or passions. "Mere knowledge is confessedly too weak. The affections alone remain to supply the deficiency."1 ~ John Piper
Christian Humanism quotes by John Piper
Though I believe in God, I don't believe in religion for everybody. Some people who are a little weak and don't want to shoulder any responsibility need Catholicism. For people at the other extreme, there is Christian Science ... I think a powerful conscience is worth all the religions put together. ~ Preston Sturges
Christian Humanism quotes by Preston Sturges
Joy is innermost peace. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Christian Humanism quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
Where are you going?"
"To get my Bible."
"Right now? You can't get your Bible out right now! I'm, I'm, we're just about to ... "
She'd never be able to go through with this if he got out his Bible. She wiped all humor from her face.
"I believe you. Proverbs 5:18. Rejoice, relish, and romp with your husband."
He chuckled. "I'm serious, Connie, and I won't have you feeling ashamed or unclean over anything we do in that bed, tonight or any other night."
"I won't. I feel unashamed and very clean. I promise. But please don't get out that Bible."
"What? Think you that God can't see us right now?"
Groaning, she slid off his lap and covered her face with her hands. He sunk to his knees in front of her, drawing her hands down.
"I love you. You love me. We are man and wife. God is watching, Connie, and He is very, very pleased. ~ Deeanne Gist
Christian Humanism quotes by Deeanne Gist
A terrible secret, known only to the most powerful, threatens to undo three millennia of progress. The gods are not dead at all. They merely sleep. And they are being hunted. ~ Christian Warren Freed
Christian Humanism quotes by Christian Warren Freed
Why I love Jesus Christ; He saved me from my sins. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Christian Humanism quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
Of course, a Christian can revert to old habits and act unloving at times, but that is no longer their nature. Being unloving is not supposed to be our regular way of life. We are now partakers of the divine nature. As Christians, when we drift off center of the Father's love, we need to recognize our error and repent, coming back into the light. ~ Chad Kidd
Christian Humanism quotes by Chad Kidd
A Christian expects to go to Heaven on the virtue of another. ~ Aiden Wilson Tozer
Christian Humanism quotes by Aiden Wilson Tozer
The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life ~ Pope John Paul II
Christian Humanism quotes by Pope John Paul II
Truly Christian conduct is not predicated on whether I have the right to do something, but whether my conduct is helpful to those about me. ~ Gordon D. Fee
Christian Humanism quotes by Gordon D. Fee
I realized that my truest passion was for helping people change through faith in a higher power. That meant, for me, belonging to the church. Using my abilities to bring Christian doctrine to a postmodern world. ~ James McGreevey
Christian Humanism quotes by James McGreevey
We are committed to free access and free practice, to the members of the other two religions, to the holy shrines in Jerusalem. To the Muslims, to the Christians. ~ Yitzhak Rabin
Christian Humanism quotes by Yitzhak Rabin
I am an archaeologist of mature vintage. Rapid descents are not my specialty. I am the plodding type."
~ Grace Madison, PhD. ~ N.L.B. Horton
Christian Humanism quotes by N.L.B. Horton
In his law-fulfilling life, curse-bearing death, and death-defeating resurrection, Jesus has entirely accomplished for sinners what sinners could never in the least do for themselves. The banner under which the Christian lives reads, It is finished. ~ Tullian Tchividjian
Christian Humanism quotes by Tullian Tchividjian
I'm an actor I'm not a politician. I always kick myself when I talk too much about family, or personal things. ~ Christian Bale
Christian Humanism quotes by Christian Bale
Grace makes us inwardly RIGHT so we walk outwardly UPRIGHT ~ John Paul Warren
Christian Humanism quotes by John Paul Warren
(People) either overestimate Satan's influence and power, living with an inflated, erroneous perspective of his abilities. Or they underestimate him. They don't assign him any credit at all for the difficulties he's stirring up beneath the surface of our lives ... Satan is not God. And he is not God's counterpart or peer ... Satan is nothing but a copycat trying desperately to convince you he's more powerful than he actually is ... So even though he's given temporary clearance to strategize and antagonize, we don't need to pray from a position of fear or weakness against him ... But we can't expect to experience this power unless we're serious about joining the battle in prayer. ~ Priscilla Shirer
Christian Humanism quotes by Priscilla Shirer
But its exclusive character and irreconcileable hostility to the religious cults and ceremonies with which the whole social life of the city-state and the empire were inseparably connected at every turn, brought the Christians into inevitable conflict with the government and with public opinion. To the man in the street, the Christian was an anti-social atheist who would take no part in the public feasts and the games, which played such a large part in city life. To the authorities he was a passive rebel, who would neither take his share of municipal offices nor pay loyal homage to the Emperor. Hence the rise of persecution, and the driving of the Christians into an underground existence, as a proscribed sect. The Church grew under the shadow of the executioner's rods and axes, and every Christian lived in the peril of physical torture and death. The thought of martyrdom coloured the whole outlook of early Christianity. But it was not only a fear, it was also an ideal and a hope. For the martyr was the complete Christian, he was the champion and hero of the new society and its conflict with the old, and even the Christians who failed in the moment of the trial - the lapsi - looked on the martyrs as their saviours and protectors ~ Christopher Henry Dawson
Christian Humanism quotes by Christopher Henry Dawson
Two murders. One bridge. And the truth as elusive as the fog. ~ Abigail Wilson
Christian Humanism quotes by Abigail Wilson
A real Christian preaches with deeds and discussion, not accusations and condemnations. You should never listen to the person shouting the loudest in anything." ~ K.D. Worth, The Grim Life ~ K.D. Worth
Christian Humanism quotes by K.D. Worth
God is not only to be known in His blessed and incomprehensible being, for this is something which is reserved for His saints in the age to come. He is also known from the grandeur and beauty of His creatures, from His providence which governs the world day by day, from His righteousness and from wonders which He shows to His saints in each generation. ~ John Cassian
Christian Humanism quotes by John Cassian
Human beings by nature want happiness and do not want suffering. With that
feeling everyone tries to achieve happiness and tries to get rid of suffering, and everyone has the basic right to do this. In this way, all here are the same, whether rich or poor, educated or uneducated, Easterner or Westerner, believer or non-believer, and within believers whether Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and so on. Basically, from the viewpoint of real human value we are all the same. ~ Dalai Lama
Christian Humanism quotes by Dalai Lama
The world is looking, not for Christians who are perfect, but for Christians who are honest and who are willing to be honest with some of our contradictions and hypocrisy. ~ Shane Claiborne
