In trying to explain this linkage, I was inspired by a traditional African tool that has three legs and a basin to sit on. To me the three legs represent three critical pillars of just and stable societies. The first leg stands for democratic space, where rights are respected, whether they are human rights, women's rights, children's rights, or environmental rights. The second represents sustainable and equitable management and resources. And the third stands for cultures of peace that are deliberately cultivated within communities and nations. The basin, or seat, represents society and its prospects for development. Unless all three legs are in place, supporting the seat, no society can thrive. Neither can its citizens develop their skills and creativity. When one leg is missing, the seat is unstable; when two legs are missing, it is impossible to keep any state alive; and when no legs are available, the state is as good as a failed state. No development can take place in such a state either. Instead, conflict ensues. ~ Wangari Maathai
Childrens Rights quotes by Wangari Maathai
If this were a courageous country,
it would ask Gloria to lead it
since she is sane and funny and beautiful and smart
and the National Leaders we've always had
are not.
When I listen to her talk about women's rights
children's rights
men's rights
I think of the long line of Americans
who should have been president, but weren't.
Imagine Crazy Horse as president. Sojourner Truth.
John Brown. Harriet Tubman. Black Elk or Geronimo.
Imagine President Martin Luther King confronting
the youthful "Oppie" Oppenheimer. Imagine President
Malcolm X going after the Klan. Imagine President Stevie
Wonder dealing with the "Truly Needy."
Imagine President Shirley Chisholm, Ron Dellums, or
Sweet Honey in the Rock
dealing with Anything.
It is imagining to make us weep with frustration,
as we languish under real estate dealers, killers,
and bad actors. ~ Alice Walker
Childrens Rights quotes by Alice Walker
We create our work for children not because they're "cute," but because they're human beings, deserving of respect. ~ Mo Willems
Childrens Rights quotes by Mo Willems
I researched children's rights, divorce law, and parental kidnapping. Millions of children and parents are touched by the inadequacy of the legal system to deal with the human heart. ~ Amity Gaige
Childrens Rights quotes by Amity Gaige
So today, we call upon the world leaders to change their strategic policies in favor of peace and prosperity. We call upon the world leaders that all of these deals must protect women and children's rights. A deal that goes against the rights of women is unacceptable. ~ Malala Yousafzai
Childrens Rights quotes by Malala Yousafzai
There are people in this country who will argue that because of the demise of morals in general, and Sunday school in particular, kids today are losing their innocence before they should, that because of cartoons and Ken Starr and curricula about their classmates who have two mommies, youth learn too soon about sex and death. Well, like practically everyone else in the Western world who came of age since Gutenberg, I lost my innocence the old-time-religion way, by reading the nursery rhyme of fornication that is the Old Testament and the fairy tale bloodbath that is the New. Job taught me Hey! Life's not fair! Lot's wife taught me that I'm probably going to come across a few weird sleazy things I won't be able to resist looking into. And the book of Revelation taught me to live in the moment, if only because the future's so grim.

Being a fundamentalist means going straight to the source. I was asked to not only read the Bible, but to memorize Bible verses. If it wasn't for the easy access to the sordid Word of God I might have had an innocent childhood. Instead, I was a worrywart before my time, shivering in constant fear of a god who, from what I could tell, huffed and puffed around the cosmos looking like my dad did when my sister refused to take her vitamins that one time.

God wasn't exactly a children's rights advocate. The first thing a child reading the Bible notices is that you're supposed to honor your mother and father but they're not necessaril ~ Sarah Vowell
Childrens Rights quotes by Sarah Vowell
I wrote a song called "Stinky Sodomite." It isn't a pop song, a historical song, or a song condemning homosexuality. Rather, it is a children's song that teaches them how to count. In fact, the only time the words "Stinky Sodomite" appear in the song is in the title. Other tracks on the educational CD include "The Ratio of Fellatio," "Thomas Jefferson's Johnson," and "It's Never Too Early to Ask Your Father About His First Erection. ~ Jarod Kintz
Childrens Rights quotes by Jarod Kintz
Remember: the ratings system is a voluntary infringement of First Amendment rights, an uneasy bargain between the needs of parents, the needs of artists, and the needs of large media corporations to make profits. Any time we chip away at the First Amendment, we should at least do it with some reverence. ~ Marshall Herskovitz
Childrens Rights quotes by Marshall Herskovitz
Preschoolers sound much brighter and more knowledgeable than they really are, which is why so many parents and grandparents are sosure their progeny are gifted and super-bright. Because children's questions sound so mature and sophisticated, we are tempted to answer them at a level of abstraction far beyond the child's level of comprehension. That is a temptation we should resist. ~ David Elkind
Childrens Rights quotes by David Elkind
The most important journey of our lives is doing good for the world, especially working for the upliftment of human conditions, human values, human dignity and human rights. ~ Amit Ray
Childrens Rights quotes by Amit Ray
Eritrean people are strong and caring. And despite all that we had been through we were brimming with optimism. Our country was on the verge of huge change. ~ Abeba Habtu
Childrens Rights quotes by Abeba Habtu
I pull over a colored guy who's driving, probably stoned, with his kids in the car! I smell marijuana! Out of the blue, this scumbag tells me he's got a gun and a license to carry. Why does he tell me that? Does he plan to shoot me?
"Show me your hands, I tell him. He ignores me, Brenda! He reaches down into his pocket. Is he reaching for the gun? Why won't he show me his hands? He's not 'the black guy' or 'the white guy,' dammit! He's the guy with the fucking gun! ~ Mark M. Bello
Childrens Rights quotes by Mark M. Bello
I was never allowed to read the popular American children's books of my day because, as my mother said, the children spoke bad English without the author's knowing it. ~ Edith Wharton
Childrens Rights quotes by Edith Wharton
The accusation against the Church for being either right or left wing tells you more about the contemporary political assumptions than about the political inclination of Catholicism. The Church will seem both "right wing" (in promoting the traditional family, opposing abortion, euthanasia, embryonic research, etc.) and "left wing" (in advocating the rights of minorities, social justice, active state support for the poorest, etc.), depending on the political bias of the one accusing .The same bias afflicts Catholics. There are pro-life Catholics who think Catholic social teaching is "socialist," and pro-social-justice Catholics who think pro-life causes are right wing.

The Church will always be accused of "interfering" or trying to "impose" its view when the critic disagrees with its stance; but the same critic will say nothing when the Church has intervened politically on a matter with which he or she agrees. And if the Church has stayed silent, the critic will accuse it of "failing to speak out." Put another way, people are against the Church "interfering" in what they would much rather have left alone; and in favor of "interfering" in what they believe should be changed.

Why and when does the Church speak out on political questions? The answer is rarely and cautiously, and almost always because it is a matter which touches on the Gospel, on core freedoms and rights (such as the right to life, or to religious freedom), or on core principles of Catholic ~ Austen Ivereigh
Childrens Rights quotes by Austen Ivereigh
Science in its truest form is and will always remain compatible with human rights and equality. ~ Abhijit Naskar
Childrens Rights quotes by Abhijit Naskar
We measure the success of schools not by the kinds of human beings they promote but by whatever increases in reading scores they chalk up. We have allowed quantitative standards, so central to the adult economic system, to become the principal yardstick for our definition of our children's worth. ~ Kenneth Keniston
Childrens Rights quotes by Kenneth Keniston
I believe we should work to end all racism in American society and staunchly defend the inherent rights of every person. ~ Rand Paul
Childrens Rights quotes by Rand Paul
Freedom is not an abstaction, nor is a little of it enough. A little more is not enough either. Having less, being less, empoverished in freedom and rights, women then invariably have less self-respect: less self-respect than any human being needs to live a brave and honest life. ~ Andrea Dworkin
Childrens Rights quotes by Andrea Dworkin
It is because the human experience is universal that human rights are universal. ~ Hillary Clinton
Childrens Rights quotes by Hillary Clinton
Tyrannies have long lists of rights. What they do not have is structural restraints on the power of government. ~ Antonin Scalia
Childrens Rights quotes by Antonin Scalia
The dissolution of society bids fair to become the termination of a career of which property is the end and aim, because such a career contains the elements of self-destruction. Democracy in government, brotherhood in society, equality in rights and privileges, and universal education, foreshadow the next higher plane of society to which experience, intelligence and knowledge are steadily tending. ~ Lewis Henry Morgan
Childrens Rights quotes by Lewis Henry Morgan
If you have the tendency to repress your anger, you have lost touch with an important part of yourself. Getting angry is a way to gain back that part of yourself by asserting your rights, expressing your displeasure with a situation, and letting others know how you wish to be treated. It can motivate you to make needed changes in a relationship or other areas of your life. Finally it can let others know that you expect to be respected and treated fairly. ~ Beverly Engel
Childrens Rights quotes by Beverly Engel
You 'ain't found out yet we're women-folks, Nanny Penn," said she. "You 'ain't seen enough of men-folks yet to. One of these days you'll find it out, an' then you'll know that we know only what men-folks think we do, so far as any use of it goes, an' how we'd ought to reckon men-folks in with Providence an' not complain of what they do any more than we do of the weather. ~ Mary Wilkins Freeman
Childrens Rights quotes by Mary Wilkins Freeman
Shout out to the noisemakers. Our world needs your voices.

Make noise for justice.
Make noise for inclusion.
Make noise for empathy.
Make noise for our planet.
Make noise for civil rights.
Make noise for women's rights.
Make noise for compassion.
Make noise for LOVE. ~ Scott Stabile
Childrens Rights quotes by Scott Stabile
If people concentrated on their responsibilities, others would have their rights. ~ Stuart Briscoe
Childrens Rights quotes by Stuart Briscoe
I don't think about politics," Rabbit says. "That's one of my Goddam precious American rights, not to think about politics. ~ John Updike
Childrens Rights quotes by John Updike
We, gays, can get married in Canada. We let heterosexuals too, but that was a huge thing, we had to have a referendum and a vote, it's crazy! But then we were like, if they want to get married.. that's cool. That's gonna destroy their relationships, but.. Heterosexuals deserve the same rights as homosexuals. ~ Tegan Quin
Childrens Rights quotes by Tegan Quin
Certainly Apple has improved enormously. At the beginning, the sampling rate was an issue for me, but a bigger argument was over digital rights, which I had. ~ Gail Zappa
Childrens Rights quotes by Gail Zappa
Without shedding of blood there is no anything ... Everything, it seems to me, has to be purchased by self-sacrifice. Our race has marked every step of its painful ascent with blood. And now torrents of it must flow again ... I don't think the war has been sent as a punishment for sin. I think it is the price humanity must pay for some blessing - some advance great enough to be worth the price which we may not live to see but which our children's children will inherit. ~ L.M. Montgomery
Childrens Rights quotes by L.M. Montgomery
A good way to take a baby step into the world of animal rights is to make a list of small things you can do to help your issue and work your way up to the big things. Make a promise to do one thing on your list each month. ~ Jenna Morasca
Childrens Rights quotes by Jenna Morasca
Any home where there is love constitutes a family and all families should have the same legal rights, including the right to marry and have or adopt children. Why shouldn't gay people be able to live as open and freely as everybody else? ~ Elizabeth Taylor
Childrens Rights quotes by Elizabeth Taylor
After the First World War, Germany was trying to build a democracy. Then when the Reichstag, the legislature, was burned down in 1933, this was seen as such an emergency that human rights had to be suspended. The attack on the World Trade Towers has allowed Bush and his gang to do anything. What are we to do now? I say when there's a code red, we should all run around like chickens with our heads cut off. I don't feel that we are in any great danger. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Childrens Rights quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
What good are those wings if you can't use them to fly? ~ Jamie A. Triplin
Childrens Rights quotes by Jamie A. Triplin
To protect the right of expression is the central part of an artist's activity ... In China many essential rights are lacking, and I wanted to remind people of this. ~ Ai Weiwei
Childrens Rights quotes by Ai Weiwei
But those who are incapable of
pitying animals are, as a matter of fact, incapable of pitying men.
A physician who would cut a living rabbit in pieces
laying bare
the nerves, denuding them with knives, pulling them out with
forceps
would not hesitate to try experiments with men and women
for the gratification of his curiosity. ~ Robert G. Ingersoll
Childrens Rights quotes by Robert G. Ingersoll
The student who elects to risk it all - which is nothing - to establish an online video rental service that delivers $5,000 per month in income from a small niche of Blu-ray aficionados, a two-hour-per-week side project that allows him to work full-time as an animal rights lobbyist. ~ Timothy Ferriss
Childrens Rights quotes by Timothy Ferriss
I have tried to fight the impulse, the attraction, but my defenses crumble every time I see him. Since my divorce from Hank I'm practically love-starved. ~ Martha Lemasters
Childrens Rights quotes by Martha Lemasters
A private dance, without sitting down to supper, was pronounced an infamous fraud upon the rights of men and women; and Mrs. Weston must not speak of it again. ~ Jane Austen
Childrens Rights quotes by Jane Austen
One mode of anti-frontier and anti-self-reliance propaganda is contemporary hysteria about gun control – a part of the materialistic determinism of the hour. To the superficial minds of "Liberals," collectivists, Marxians, et al., instruments are supposed to act upon man, and men (no longer self-reliant) merely to be acted upon: to them, murder lies in the gun and not in the soul of man. So they think that to deprive men of guns would prevent man from murder!

"What the Power Boys – the insiders – behind the gun controls really want, of course, is not to control guns but to control us. They want registration so that they can confiscate; they want to confiscate so that they will have power and we shall be powerless – even as we live today upon a wild frontier demanding ever more self-reliance.

"On the old frontier, men had to rely upon themselves and had to be armed until there were sound laws and until law-enforcement officers could enforce the laws. Today laws against thieves, muggers, thugs, rapist, arsonists, looters, murderers (thanks largely to the "Liberal" majority on the Supreme Court) are diluted almost to the point of abolition; the Marshal Dillons of the world, thanks to the same Court, are disarmed or emasculated, they are told to respect the "rights" of thieves, muggers, thugs, rapists, arsonists, looters, muggers, above the right of good citizens to be secure from such felons.

"Good citizens, deprived of the processes of the law o ~ Edward Merrill Root
Childrens Rights quotes by Edward Merrill Root
The justice system in the West has a lot of problems," Poe said, "but at least there are rules. You have basic rights as the accused. You have your day in court. You don't have any rights when you're accused on the Internet. And the consequences are worse. It's worldwide forever. ~ Jon Ronson
Childrens Rights quotes by Jon Ronson
Factual information alone isn't sufficient to guide you through life's labyrinthine tests. You need and deserve regular deliveries of uncanny revelation. One of your inalienable rights as a human being should therefore be to receive a mysteriously useful omen every day of your life. ~ Rob Brezsny
