I learned about religion the way most children learned about sex, [in the schoolyard] ... They terrified me by telling me there was a dead man in the sky watching everything I did and I retaliated by explaining where babies came from. Some of their mothers phoned mine to complain, though I think I was more upset than they were: they didn't believe me but I believed them. ~ Margaret Atwood
Childhood Religion quotes by Margaret Atwood
Believing in religion is like believing that adulthood is the solution to childhood. ~ Adam Phillips
Childhood Religion quotes by Adam Phillips
This conference on religious education seems to your humble servant the last word in absurdity. We are told by a delightful 'expert' that we ought not really teach our children about God lest we rob them of the opportunity of making their own discovery of God, and lest we corrupt their young minds by our own superstitions. If we continue along these lines the day will come when some expert will advise us not to teach our children the English language, since we rob them thereby of the possibility of choosing the German, French or Japanese languages as possible alternatives. Don't these good people realize that they are reducing the principle of freedom to an absurdity? ~ Reinhold Niebuhr
Childhood Religion quotes by Reinhold Niebuhr
Youngsters deserve no opinions. ~ Carla H. Krueger
Childhood Religion quotes by Carla H. Krueger
In the places that call me out, I know I'll recover my wordless childhood trust in the largeness of life and its willingness to take me in. ~ Barbara Kingsolver
Childhood Religion quotes by Barbara Kingsolver
GINGER. He and I established the most wonderful rapport. I think he's infatuated with me; he kept grabbing my ass and telling me how different I am. I think he senses the rebel in me. I've always been in rebellion ever since I was a kid. I remember how whenever my father's tell me to pick my toys up I'd stamp my foot and say "No" twice before picking them up. Oh, I was a mean one. My latest rebellion is my childhood religion; I've just rebelled against that. I used to be High Episcopalian.
BONGI. What're you now?
GINGER. Low Epicsopalian. ~ Valerie Solanas
Childhood Religion quotes by Valerie Solanas
Religion is comparable to a childhood neurosis. ~ Sigmund Freud
Childhood Religion quotes by Sigmund Freud
Because Christianity is a religion of death, it could be treated with the utmost realism, and it could have its orgies, just likethe old religion of nature and life. ~ Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Schlegel
Childhood Religion quotes by Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Schlegel
For me, religion is like a rhinoceros: I don't have one, and I'd really prefer not to be trampled by yours. ~ Silas Sparkhammer
Childhood Religion quotes by Silas Sparkhammer
Yeah?" Stradlater said. That really interested him. About the booze hound running around the house naked, with Jane around. Stradlater was a very sexy bastard.
"She had a lousy childhood. I'm not kidding."
That didn't interest Stradlater, though. Only very sexy stuff interested him. ~ J.D. Salinger
Childhood Religion quotes by J.D. Salinger
Whereas once medieval Europe had adhered to a common Catholic religion, a common Latin language, and common well-spiced cuisine (at least, for the elite), the balkanization of the Christian world along national lines now meant that nations could no longer gather around the same table as easily as before. Even though it would take some years, the Europe-wide fashion for spices-as much as Latin-would be a casualty of Martin Luther's squabble with the bishop of Rome. ~ Michael Krondl
Childhood Religion quotes by Michael Krondl
My first and strongest memories about perfume come from childhood, from my mother, and they are a complex blend of her private and public selves. ~ Mary Gaitskill
Childhood Religion quotes by Mary Gaitskill
The patchwork religion is not of the least value with God. He requires the whole heart. ~ Ellen G. White
Childhood Religion quotes by Ellen G. White
My father moved out a week later. I hugged him at our front door and couldn't bear to watch him leave with so much luggage. ~ Alison Espach
Childhood Religion quotes by Alison Espach
In my experience ideology is a lot like religion; it's a belief system and most people cling to it long after it becomes clear that their ideology doesn't describe the real world. ~ Maureen F. McHugh
Childhood Religion quotes by Maureen F. McHugh
Science is experimental, moving forward step-by-step, making trial and learning through success and failure. Is not this also the way of religion, and especially of the Christian religion? The writings of those who preach the religion have from the very beginning insisted that it is to be proved by experience. If a man is drawn towards honour and courage and endurance, justice, mercy, and charity, let him follow the way of Christ and find out for himself. No findings in science hinder him in that way. ~ William Henry Bragg
Childhood Religion quotes by William Henry Bragg
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. John 1:12

Divine sonship is not something that we gain of ourselves. Only to those who receive Christ as their Saviour is given the power to become sons and daughters of God. The sinner cannot, by any power of his own, rid himself of sin. For the accomplishment of this result, he must look to a higher Power. John exclaimed, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." Christ alone has power to cleanse the heart. He who is seeking for forgiveness and acceptance can say only,--

"Nothing in my hand I bring;
Simply to Thy cross I cling."

But the promise of sonship is made to all who "believe on his name." Every one who comes to Jesus in faith will receive pardon.

The religion of Christ transforms the heart. It makes the worldly-minded man heavenly-minded. Under its influence the selfish man becomes unselfish, because this is the character of Christ. The dishonest, scheming man becomes upright, so that it is second nature to him to do to others as he would have others do to him. The profligate is changed from impurity to purity. He forms correct habits; for the gospel of Christ has become to him a savor of life unto life.

God was to be manifest in Christ, "reconciling the world unto himself." Man had become so degraded by sin that it was impossible for him, in himself, to come into harm ~ Ellen G. White
Childhood Religion quotes by Ellen G. White
Nobody would seriously describe a tiny child as a Marxist child or an Anarchist child or a Post-modernist child. Yet children are routinely labelled with the religion of their parents. We need to encourage people to think carefully before labelling any child too young to know their own opinions and our adverts will help to do that. ~ Richard Dawkins
Childhood Religion quotes by Richard Dawkins
Since my earliest memory, I imagined I would be a chef one day. When other kids were watching Saturday morning cartoons or music videos on YouTube, I was watching Iron Chef,The Great British Baking Show, and old Anthony Bourdain shows and taking notes. Like, actual notes in the Notes app on my phone. I have long lists of ideas for recipes that I can modify or make my own. This self-appointed class is the only one I've ever studied well for.
I started playing around with the staples of the house: rice, beans, plantains, and chicken. But 'Buela let me expand to the different things I saw on TV. Soufflés, shepherd's pie, gizzards. When other kids were saving up their lunch money to buy the latest Jordans, I was saving up mine so I could buy the best ingredients. Fish we'd never heard of that I had to get from a special market down by Penn's Landing. Sausages that I watched Italian abuelitas in South Philly make by hand. I even saved up a whole month's worth of allowance when I was in seventh grade so I could make 'Buela a special birthday dinner of filet mignon. ~ Elizabeth Acevedo
Childhood Religion quotes by Elizabeth Acevedo
The minds of small children are more interested in clockwork trains, jumping in puddles and other important childhood endeavours. ~ Maxwell Grantly
Childhood Religion quotes by Maxwell Grantly
Either blasphemy is a victimless crime or its victim is powerful enough to take care of himself without any help from you. ~ Richard Dawkins
Childhood Religion quotes by Richard Dawkins
What a strange fellowship this is, the God seekers in every land, lifting their voices in the most disparate ways imaginable to the God of all life. How does it sound from above? Like bedlam, or do the strains blend in strange ethereal harmony? Does one faith carry the lead or do the parts share in counterpoint and antiphony where not in full throated chorus?
We cannot know. All we can do is to listen carefully and with full attention to each voice in turn as it addresses the divine. ~ Huston Smith
Childhood Religion quotes by Huston Smith
It is the ultimate religion, through which all humans neuropsychologically morph into Buddhas, or Enlightened Beings. ~ Abhijit Naskar
Childhood Religion quotes by Abhijit Naskar
When Julian ascended the throne, he declared his impatience to embrace and reward the Syrian sophist, who had preserved, in a degenerate age, the Grecian purity of taste, of manners and of religion. The emperor's prepossession was increased and justified by the discreet pride of his favourite. ~ Edward Gibbon
Childhood Religion quotes by Edward Gibbon
My honors thesis project was my first interactive exhibit, in which two facing chairs were activated by a motion sensor when the viewer walked by. One was a cofortable armchair of plush red velvet, with a dildo sticking out of a hole in the seat. When activated, the dildo moved up and down and a strobe light pulsed. The facing chair was hard and uncomfortable, with spikes protruding from the seat, and when the viewer walked by it a dog would bark. The juxtaposition of the two chairs was meant to represent how forces of repression censor the desire for liberation.

In that same exhibition, I showed a handmade box in the shape of a cross, decorated with a beautiful painting of the Holy Trinity. The viewer was encouraged to open the box, where they would find a dildo wrapped in the American flag and nailed to a cross-- this was meant to symbolize the hypocrisy and repression that is hidden under the attractive facade of organized religion. The dildo was surrounded by pages from the Bible, which were themselves surrounded by images of the sickness and starvation caused by the embargo in Iraq, a comment on the effects of imposing one culture and religion on another. ~ Wafaa Bilal
Childhood Religion quotes by Wafaa Bilal
Freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom. Freedom opens the windows of the soul so that man can discover his most profound beliefs and commune with God. Freedom and religion endure together, or perish alone. ~ Mitt Romney
Childhood Religion quotes by Mitt Romney
Religion is as necessary to reason as reason is to religion. The one cannot exist without the other. A reasoning being would lose his reason, in attempting to account for the great phenomena of nature, had he not a Supreme Being to refer to; and well has it been said, that if there had been no God, mankind would have been obliged to imagine one. ~ George Washington
Childhood Religion quotes by George Washington
I had never been into society; for me the world was the enclosure of the college and the seminary. I had a vague knowledge that there was a something
called woman, but I never dwelt upon the subject; I was absolutely innocent. I saw my infirm old mother only twice a year; that was the extent of my connection with the outside world. ~ Theophile Gautier
Childhood Religion quotes by Theophile Gautier
When misfortunes happen to such as dissent from us in matters of religion, we call them judgments; when to those of our own sect, we call them trials; when to persons neither way distinguished, we are content to attribute them to the settled course of things. ~ William Shenstone
Childhood Religion quotes by William Shenstone
Your boyfriend has some real trust issues," Morpheus baits. "Shut up. He had a rough childhood." "He should be grateful he had one at all. ~ A.G. Howard
Childhood Religion quotes by A.G. Howard
Getting a new version of the answer every day, Artyom was unable to compel himself to believe what was true, because the next day another, no less precise and comprehensive one, might arise. Whom should he believe? And in what? ... Any faith served man only as a crutch supporting him. ... He understood why man needs this support. Without it, life would have become empty, like an abandoned tunnel. ~ Dmitry Glukhovsky
Childhood Religion quotes by Dmitry Glukhovsky
Man to the last is but a froward child;
So eager for the future, come what may,
And to the present so insensible. ~ Samuel Rogers
Childhood Religion quotes by Samuel Rogers
One could not imagine a process more open to the elephantine logic of the Bible-smasher than this: that the sun should be created after the sunlight. The conception that lies at the back of the phrase is indeed profoundly antagonistic to much of the modern point of view. To many modern people it would sound like saying that foliage existed before the first leaf ; it would sound like saying that childhood existed before a baby was born. The idea is, as I have said, alien to most modern thought, and like many other ideas which are alien to most modern thought, it is a very subtle and a very sound idea. Whatever be the meaning of the passage in the actual primeval poem, there is a very real metaphysical meaning in the idea that light existed before the sun and stars. It is not barbaric; it is rather Platonic. The idea existed before any of the machinery which made manifest the idea. Justice existed when there was no need of judges, and mercy existed before any man was oppressed.

The whole difference between construction and creation is exactly this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists, as the mother can love the unborn child. In creative art the essence of a book exists before the book or before even the details or main features of the book; the author enjoys it and lives in it with a kind of prophetic rapture. He wishes to write a comic story before he has thought of a single comic inciden ~ G.K. Chesterton
Childhood Religion quotes by G.K. Chesterton
Once a Buddha, always a Buddha, Sam. Dust off some of your old parables. You have about fifteen minutes.'
Sam held out his hand. Give me some tobacco and a paper. ~ Roger Zelazny
Childhood Religion quotes by Roger Zelazny
Applying good sense to religion and religion to life. This is the field in which I design to labor ~ Theodore Parker
Childhood Religion quotes by Theodore Parker
Remember, if you don't sin, then Jesus died for nothing ~ Ricky Gervais
Childhood Religion quotes by Ricky Gervais
I remember the pain I felt, and wonder why a man who was such an accomplished liar had to tell the truth that day. ~ Toni Maguire
Childhood Religion quotes by Toni Maguire
The more a religion makes a person feel guilty and insecure, the harder the person works for the religion. ~ Darrel Ray
Childhood Religion quotes by Darrel Ray
He lives century after century, and the test I set for him he has passed. ~ Meera
Childhood Religion quotes by Meera
I am opposed to the idea of a child growing up with two gay parents. A child needs a mother and a father. I could not imagine my childhood without my mother. I also believe that it is cruel to take a baby away from its mother. ~ Stefano Gabbana
Childhood Religion quotes by Stefano Gabbana
If religion is not all encompassing, and does not factor in freedom of thought and speech, it is bound to become reductionist eventually - An absolute reductionism can result into its disintegration also, as a possibility. ~ Sandeep Sahajpal
Childhood Religion quotes by Sandeep Sahajpal
I will give you all happiness
because you gave me
happiness to live for.
Religious Leader Petra Cecilia Maria Hermans
Religion of Blue Circle ~ Petra Hermans
Childhood Religion quotes by Petra Hermans
We have become a nation ruled by fear. Since the end of the Second World War, various political leaders have fostered fear in the American people
fear of communism, fear of terrorism, fear of immigrants, fear of people based on race and religion, fear of gays and lesbians in love who just want to get married and fear of people who are somehow different. It is fear that allows political leaders to manipulate us all and distort our national priorities. ~ Mike Gravel
Childhood Religion quotes by Mike Gravel
I glanced at the contents of what I was photocopying. They were the rules of the golf club of which Mister Saito was a member. I started to laugh.
The next minute I felt more like crying, thinking about all the innocent trees that my superior was wasting to chastise me. I imagined the forests of the Japan of my childhood - maples, cedars, and ginkgoes - felled for the sole purpose of punishing a creature as insignificant as myself. I remembered, again, that Fubuki's family name meant forest. ~ Amelie Nothomb
Childhood Religion quotes by Amelie Nothomb
Funnel

The family story tells, and it was told true,
of my great-grandfather who begat eight
genius children and bought twelve almost-new
grand pianos. He left a considerable estate
when he died. The children honored their
separate arts; two became moderately famous,
three married and fattened their delicate share
of wealth and brilliance. The sixth one was
a concert pianist. She had a notable career
and wore cropped hair and walked like a man,
or so I heard when prying a childhood car
into the hushed talk of the straight Maine clan.
One died a pinafore child, she stays her five
years forever. And here is one that wrote-
I sort his odd books and wonder his once alive
words and scratch out my short marginal notes
and finger my accounts.
back from that great-grandfather I have come
to tidy a country graveyard for his sake,
to chat with the custodian under a yearly sun
and touch a ghost sound where it lies awake.
I like best to think of that Bunyan man
slapping his thighs and trading the yankee sale
for one dozen grand pianos. it fit his plan
of culture to do it big. On this same scale
he built seven arking houses and they still stand.
One, five stories up, straight up like a square
box, still dominates its coastal edge of land.
It is rented cheap in the summer musted air
to sneaker-footed families who pad through
its ro ~ Anne Sexton
Childhood Religion quotes by Anne Sexton
For most people, religion is nothing more than a substitute for a malfunctioning brain. If people need religion, ignore them and maybe they will ignore you, and you can go on with your life. It wasn't until I was beginning to do Star Trek that the subject of religion arose. What brought it up was that people were saying that I would have a chaplain on board the Enterprise. I replied, No, we don't. ~ Gene Roddenberry
Childhood Religion quotes by Gene Roddenberry
In writing this, I am not being political, but am rather pointing out the deeply divided condition of the nation. Divisions range from politics to religion to race. Not since the Civil War have we seen so many fractures in so many places at such deep levels. We are no longer "one nation" and no longer does our nation regard itself to be "under God" in any effective sense. The bad news is that we are beyond healing. Certain trends have been allowed to go too far unchecked and we now live with a shattered national consciousness, a downgraded consciousness of morality and a broken sense of who we are as a people. ~ R. Loren Sandford
Childhood Religion quotes by R. Loren Sandford
Adults spend their lives unwinding their childhood. ~ Matthew Dicks
Childhood Religion quotes by Matthew Dicks
i am my religion. my belief is love. god is within [self]. ~ The Nyghtlie Poet
Childhood Religion quotes by The Nyghtlie Poet
The world is polarizing over religion. It is getting both more religious and less religious at the same time. ~ Timothy Keller
Childhood Religion quotes by Timothy Keller
I have no regrets. Everything that happens to me was divinely ordered. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Childhood Religion quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
It is a great disgrace to religion, to imagine that it is an enemy to mirth and cheerfulness, and a severe exacter of pensive looks and solemn faces. ~ Walter Scott
