They came down from the avenue of the stars... they spoke the magical language of the stars in the heavens... Yes, their sign is our certainty that they came from the heavens... and when they come down from the heavens again they will create new order among their creation of long ago. ~ Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin
[Author's note:] When I decided to write this book, I worried that my privilege would make me blind to certain truths, that I would get things wrong, as I may well have. I worried that, as a non-immigrant and non-Mexican, I had no business writing a book set almost entirely in Mexico, set entirely among migrants. I wished someone slightly browner than me would write it. But then I thought, 'If you're a person who has the capacity to be a bridge, why not be a bridge?' So I began.

In the early days of my research, before I'd fully convinced myself that I should undertake the telling of this story, I was interviewing a very generous scholar, a remarkable woman who was chair of the Chicana and Chicano studies Department at San Diego State University. Her name is Norma Iglesias Prieto, and I mentioned my doubts to her. I told her I felt compelled, but unqualified, to write this book. She said, "Jeanine. We need as many voices as we can get, telling this story." Her encouragement sustained me for the next four years.

I was careful and deliberate in my research. I traveled extensively on both sides of the border and learned as much as I could about Mexico and migrants, about people living throughout the borderlands. The statistics in this book are all true, and though I changed some names, most of the places are real, too. But the characters, while representative of the folks I met during my travels, are fictional. ~ Jeanine Cummins
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Jeanine Cummins
Human reason is beautiful and invincible.
No bars, no barbed wire, no pulping of books,
No sentence of banishment can prevail against it.
It puts what should be above things as they are.
It does not know Jew from Greek nor slave from master. ~ Czeslaw Milosz
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Czeslaw Milosz
One not only wants to be understood when one writes, but also quite as certainly not to be understood. It is by no means an objection to a book when someone finds it unintelligible: perhaps this might just have been the intention of its author, perhaps he did not want to be understood by "anyone". A distinguished intellect and taste, when it wants to communicate its thoughts, always selects its hearers; by selecting them, it at the same time closes its barriers against "the others". It is there that all the more refined laws of style have their origin: they at the same time keep off, they create distance, they prevent "access" (intelligibility, as we have said,) while they open the ears of those who are acoustically related to them. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
Every reader, as he reads, is actually the reader of himself. The writer's work is only a kind of optical instrument he provides the reader so he can discern what he might never have seen in himself without this book. The reader's recognition in himself of what the book says is the proof of the book's truth. ~ Marcel Proust
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Marcel Proust
The idea for each of the stories in this book came in a moment of belief and was written in a burst of faith, happiness, and optimism. Those positive feelings have their dark analogues, however, and the fear of failure is a long way from the worst of them. The worst - for me, at least - is the gnawing speculation that I may have already said everything that I have to say, and am now only listening to the steady quacking of my own voice because the silence when it stops is just too spooky. ~ Stephen King
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Stephen King
You need to write your own book, the book of your heart and not chase the fads. It truly has to be the story you want to tell, it needs that fire, your fire in it. Then enjoy the time pre-publication. It is time to learn all you can about your craft and the industry. It isn't a race. Finally listen to your work. I have text to voice software that reads the books to me. Listening I can hear things that I would miss on the page. ~ Liz Fenwick
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Liz Fenwick
When you're old enough to write a book for children, by then you'll have become a grown up and have lost all your jokeyness. Unless you're an undeveloped adult and still have an enormous amount of childishness in you. ~ Roald Dahl
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Roald Dahl
With a few exceptions, the critics of children's books are remarkably lenient souls ... Most of us assume there is something goodin every child; the critics go from this to assume there is something good in every book written for a child. It is not a sound theory. ~ Katharine Sergeant Angell White
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Katharine Sergeant Angell White
When I was 12 years old, I read 'Nancy Drew' mysteries and biographies of Madame Curie and Florence Nightingale and books about girls who love horses or go to nursing school. I belonged to the Girl Scouts and got A's in school and rarely disobeyed my parents. I still kept a collection of Barbie dolls in my room, and I almost never spoke to boys. ~ Joyce Maynard
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Joyce Maynard
I think every professor and writer is in some way an exhibitionist because his or her normal activity is a theatrical one. When you give a lesson the situation is the same as writing a book. You have to capture the attention, the complicity of your audience. ~ Umberto Eco
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Umberto Eco
Given the books of a man, it is not difficult, I think, to detect therein the personality of the man, and the station in life to which he was born. ~ Richard Henry Stoddard
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Richard Henry Stoddard
Great collections of books are subject to certain accidents besides the damp, the worms, and the rats; one not less common is that of the borrowers, not to say a word of the purloiners ~ Isaac D'Israeli
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Isaac D'Israeli
So I be written in the Book of Love. I do not care about that Book Above. Erase my name, or write it as you will. So I be written in the Book of Love. ~ Omar Khayyam
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Omar Khayyam
He tries to go to life. So does every author except the very worst, but after all most of them live on predigested food. The incident or character may be from life, but the writer usually interprets it in terms of the last book he read. For instance, suppose he meets a sea captain and thinks he's an original character. The truth is that he sees the resemblance between the sea captain and the last sea captain Dana created, or who-ever creates sea captains, and therefore he knows how to set this sea captain on paper ~ F Scott Fitzgerald
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by F Scott Fitzgerald
Stay within the confines of your chosen topic. If you start to stray away from your topic and find an urge to showcase everything that you know, resist that urge. Remember that you are writing a book, not the book. ~ Gudjon Bergmann
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Gudjon Bergmann
Readers of novels are a strange folk, upon whose probable or even possible tastes no wise book-maker would ever venture to bet. ~ E. V. Lucas
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by E. V. Lucas
Don't just make a name for yourself on earth; let your name be written in the book of life in Heaven, the seat of the Sovereign God! ~ Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
Soon after he purchased me, Epps asked me if I could write and read, and on being informed that I had received some instruction in those branches of education, he assured me, with emphasis, if he ever caught me with a book, or with pen and ink, he would give me a hundred lashes. ~ Solomon Northup
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Solomon Northup
Fantasy has a better chance of lasting than a lot of other things. The Hobbit and the Narnia books, they seem to get handed down father to son, mother to daughter. Because they're set in a fantasy world, they can remain relevant. ~ Stephen King
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Stephen King
I had seen that look before, on the faces of tourists visiting the Texas Book Depository in Dallas where Lee Harvey Oswald took the shots at JFK. I took that tour and met some conspiracy buffs, all of us standing at the gunman's window and looking down to the spot where the motorcade passed. It's right there below the window, an easy shot at a slow-moving car. No mystery, just a kid and a rifle and a tragedy. They came looking for dark and terrible revelations and instead found out something even more dark and terrible: that their lives were trite and boring. ~ David Wong
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by David Wong
I'm so sorry. I don't think the etiquette manuals cover this sort of situation." He leaned in close, his lips all but grazing her neck, and inhaled. "Mmm. You smell good, too."
She nearly choked. Took a step backwards, until her back met cold stone. "Th-thank you."
"That's better. May I kiss you?" His finger dipped into her shirt collar, stroking the tender nape of her neck.
"I d-don't th-think that's a good idea."
"Why not? We're alone." His hands were at her waist.
Her lungs felt tight and much too small. "Wh-what if somebody comes in?"
He considered for a moment. "Well, I suppose they'll think I fancy grubby little boys. ~ Y.S. Lee
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Y.S. Lee
Some years ago, I wrote a book called the Emperor's New Mind and that book was describing a point of view I had about consciousness and why it was not something that comes about from complicated calculations. ~ Roger Penrose
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Roger Penrose
He pointed out to him the bearings of the coast, explained to him the variations of the compass, and taught him to read in that vast book opened over our heads which they call heaven, and where God writes in azure with letters of diamonds. ~ Alexandre Dumas
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Alexandre Dumas
I am often asked a stock question: 'Have you actually read all those books?' To this I have my answer ready: 'Is there anybody who has read all the books in his library?' That would be like claiming to enjoy the incredible luxury and good fortune of being able to accomplish everything in this life that one would wish. ~ Konstantinos Staikos
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Konstantinos Staikos
I'm not a fan of mysteries, so to prepare for this experience of writing a mystery I started reading the most successful ones in the market in 2012 ... And I realized I cannot write that kind of book. It's too gruesome, too violent, too dark; there's no redemption there. ~ Isabel Allende
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Isabel Allende
As the chapters took shape, a change came over her. It was the double-sided recognition that this book, the last that she would write, might achieve esteem and success equal to her great novel, but that its emotional heart would lie in her own unhappiness for having failed to find the one thing she wanted. For the first time she was a character in her own writing, and her frailties and mistakes were trapped on the page by the beauty and unsparing focus of her prose. Towards the end it was a battle to finish a page. The story was the story she had told herself for decades, deep within her own mind, and now as it grew, line by line, on the paper before her, she wrestled with each turn in the path all over again, as if it were still possible to change its course with the power of her words. ~ Frederick Weisel
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Frederick Weisel
I had many books and I had dreams of all kinds. Dreams in which were in a certain sense, how to say, easy to make because the near future was always extremely threatening. ~ Benoit Mandelbrot
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Benoit Mandelbrot
There's something about each of my books that I'm really proud of, and there's something about each of my books that I cringe over. ~ Margaret Haddix
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Margaret Haddix
Life is paradoxical, but I believe that I could also be the same person I am today, if life would have cut me with happiness instead of pain. ~ Haidji
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Haidji
My mother says that reading is thinking,' Sofia said. 'Not that we read and then we think, but rather that we think something and then we read it in a book as if it were written by us, although it's not written by us. Rather, someone in another country, in another place, in the past, writes it like a thought that hasn't been thought yet, until, by chance, always by chance, we find the book that clearly expresses what had been, confusingly, not yet thought by us. Not every book, of course, but certain books are destined for us, certain books seem like objects of our own thoughts. A book for each one of us. To find it, there must be a series of accidentally interrelated events, until in the end you see the light you're looking for, without even knowing you were looking for it… ~ Ricardo Piglia
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Ricardo Piglia
I sent the first half of the dissertation to Rudolf Bultmann [major figures of early 20th century biblical studies and a prominent voice in liberal Christianity] as a courtesy with an invitation to respond to any points in my analysis and critique if he wished. I was speechless when I received a long letter from Bultmann, who had diligently examined the details of my arguments. His letter became a featured part of the publication in 1964 by Westminster Press of Radical Obedience: The Ethics of Rudolf Bultmann: With a Response by Rudolf Bultmann.
That book, more than any other , launched my career as a serious theologian. But it also led to my reputation as a situation ethicist, ironically just about the time I was beginning to disavow situation ethics. ~ Thomas C. Oden
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Thomas C. Oden
- This, she said, is a book. It is one of our ways of codifying and keeping human knowledge. When it cannot be kept in a person's head, this is one method of keeping it safe. It is a good way of moving ideas from one head to another, as it only requires one person's time to do it, and not two. ~ Jesse Ball
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Jesse Ball
While burnout obviously has something to do with stress, overdoing things, not being centred, and not listening to yourself or your body, one of the deepest contributors to burnout, I believe, is the deep disappointment of not living up to your true calling, which is to help. ~ Jenn Bruer
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Jenn Bruer
There are scores of books offering 'solutions' to sprawl. Their authors would do well to read this book. ~ Witold Rybczynski
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Witold Rybczynski
Charlotte: Giordano is terribly afraid Gwyneth will get everything wrong tomorrow that she can get wrong.
Gideon: Pass the olive oil, please.
Charlotte: Politics and history are a closed book to Gwyneth. She can't even remember names - they go in at one ear and straight out of the other. She can't help it, her brain doesn't have the capacity. It's stuffed with the names of boy bands and long, long cast lists of actors in soppy romantic films.
Raphael: Gwyneth is your time-traveling cousin, right? I saw her yesterday in school. Isn't she the one with long dark hair and blue eyes?
Charlotte: Yes, and that birthmark on her temple, the one that looks like a little banana.
Gideon: Like a little crescent moon.
Raphael: What's that friend of hers called? The blonde with freckles? Lily?
Charlotte: Lesley Hay. Rather brighter than Gwyneth, but she's a wonderful example of the way people get to look like their dogs. Hers is a shaggy golden retriever crossbreed called Bertie.
Raphael: That's cute!
Charlotte: You like dogs?
Raphael: Especially golden retriever crossbreeds with freckles.
Charlotte: I see. Well, you can try your luck. You won't find it particularly difficult. Lesley gets through even more boys than Gwyneth.
Gideon: Really? How many . . . er, boyfriends has Gwyneth had?
Charlotte: Oh, my God! This is kind of embarrassing. I don't want to speak ill of her, it's just that she's not very discriminating. Particula ~ Kerstin Gier
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Kerstin Gier
She tried to smile warmly but wondered if she looked "fakey," something Ariel sometimes accused her of. Ariel had said. "It's like you're trying to be happy out of a book." Millie owned several books about trying to be happy. ~ Lorrie Moore
Chilam Balam Book Of Tizimin quotes by Lorrie Moore
When I first told people I was writing a book, some would say that was interesting, but others thought it was some holiday project and I would lose interest. I think my parents thought the same thing, and they were surprised when I kept going. I'm not sure I thought I would keep going, but then it became a big part of my life. ~ Alexandra Adornetto
