It was about time he opened his eyes to see just to whom he was speaking.
After several quick blinks, he managed to do just that, gazing up into a small, heart-shaped face. A pretty face. Not one of a curvy seductress or a cool-hearted courtesan, but a feminine, delicately featured face. He knew this face. He adored this face.
"Miss Charlotte Greene," he stated finally, taking a risk and raising his head to get a better look.
Sitting at his side, the white skirt of her thick night rail tucked around her legs, she smiled down at him with concerned eyes of deep blue. Gorgeous sapphire eyes often hidden behind the rims of small, round spectacles.
Truthfully, she happened to be the complete opposite of what he was usually attracted to. She was a bit too thin, too short, and too quiet for his tastes, which had always leaned toward the voluptuous, the tall, and the spirited. Normally, she wasn't one to stand out. And he rather suspected she preferred it that way.
However, while most young bucks readily discounted her merits and furtively joked about her quirky behavior behind her back, Rothbury had always sensed a subtle undercurrent of passion in her dark blue gaze. Unlike the "diamonds" of the ton and demimonde, who slinked across assembly rooms completely aware of their beauty and the power that accompanied it, Miss Greene moved like a woman who hadn't yet realized how utterly fetching she truly was. She clung to the walls, sometimes barely raising her e ~ Olivia Parker

Very good looking, with black hair and eyes, and lively complexion. ~ Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Bronte
We've learned that success does not come to the man who has no problems; if nothing goes wrong, the chances are nothing goes at all, for action brings problems as surely as planting potatoes brings bugs. The man of spirit goes after the bugs, he doesn't quit planting potatoes. ~ Charlotte Paul
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Paul
the right slit - and since ~ Brian Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by Brian Greene
All that matters is the way he's angling my face up to his, thumb and forefinger still on my jaw and my chin. It makes me think of someone taking a drink, only the drink in question is my lips. He wants to taste me there, and oh, that's exactly what it feels like.
He doesn't press his mouth to mine, too hard and too frantic. He just dips in, getting a little of me on his lips before going back for something deeper and sweeter. It's so much sweeter I could cry. I feel like I've been waiting for this for a thousand years, and, if his reaction is anything to go by, so has he. ~ Charlotte Stein
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Stein
Try as you may, you can never defy love. ~ Emery Lee
Charlotte Greene quotes by Emery Lee

Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Bronte
All the room darkened and my heart again sank; inexpressible sadness weighed it down ~ Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Bronte
I just want you to know me. ~ Charlotte Byrd
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Byrd
Everywhere you are, I will be. Everywhere you go, I will
go. I will follow you into your dreams, stay while you sleep,
watch while you eat."
That sinful bottom lip touched hers, then played with it,
brushing it, tugging on it, parting her mouth as if he had all
the time in the world to play and coax. "I will be the very air
you breathe. ~ Charlotte Featherstone
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Featherstone
Because of the power of television, I was visible to everybody all over the world. But there are many things in the theater that are more fulfilling and that I look forward to doing more. But really, I love it all: theater, film, television. ~ Charlotte Rae
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Rae
Woman, thou art a river, deep and wide, Of waters soft and sweet: Alas! I've never reached the other side; Though oft I've wet my feet! ~ William Batchelder Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by William Batchelder Greene
There were friends all over London who would welcome his eagerly to their homes, who would throw open their guest rooms and their fridges, eager to condole and to help. The price of all of those comfortable beds and home-cooked meals, however, would be to sit at kitchen tables, once the clean-pajamaed children were in bed, and relive the filthy final battle with Charlotte, submitting to the outraged sympathy and pity of his friends' girlfriends and wives. To this he preferred grim solitude, a Pot Noodle and a sleeping bag. ~ Robert Galbraith
Charlotte Greene quotes by Robert Galbraith
I am not going out under human guidance, subject to the defective laws and erring control of my feeble fellow-worms; my king, my lawgiver, my captain, is the All-perfect; it seems strange to me that all round me do not burn to enlist under the same banner--to join in the same enterprise. ~ Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Bronte
When our emotions are engaged, we often have trouble seeing things as they are. ~ Robert Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by Robert Greene
And it is madness in all women to let a secret love kindle within them, which, if unreturned and unknown, must devour the life that feeds it ... ~ Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Bronte
But my love had no intentions: it knew the future. All one could do was try to make the future less hard, to break the future gently when it came. ~ Graham Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by Graham Greene
There are times when a lover longs to be also a father and a brother: he is jealous of the years he hasn't shared. ~ Graham Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by Graham Greene
Let us inquire what glory there was in an omnipotent being torturing forever a puny little creature who could in no way defend himself? Would it be to the glory of a man to fry ants? ~ Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Sometimes I see myself reflected too closely in other men for comfort, and then I have an enormous wish to believe in the saints, in heroic virtue. ~ Graham Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by Graham Greene
We honor them for their functional powers, even while we dishonor them by our use of it; we honor them for their carefully enforced virtue, even while we show by our own conduct how little we think of that virtue; we value them, sincerely, for the perverted maternal activities which make our wives the most comfortable of servants, bound to us for life with the wages wholly at our own decision, their whole business, outside of the temporary duties of such motherhood as they may achieve, to meet our needs in every way. ~ Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Sometimes I half fall asleep when I am sitting alone and fancy things that have never happened. ~ Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Bronte
If no resistances or obstacles face you, you must create them. No seduction can proceed without them. ~ Robert Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by Robert Greene
I shook my head. "The men in green all forsook England a hundred years ago," said I, speaking as seriously as he had done. "And not even in Hay Lane, or the fields about it, could you find a trace of them. I don't think either summer or harvest, or winter moon, will ever shine on their revels more." Mrs. Fairfax had dropped her ~ Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Bronte
Tell me one thing. Has Rider Sinclair done something to hurt you in any way? If he has,I'll shoot that man!"
Willow was taken aback by Miriam's vehemence. "No,no," she hastily assured. "He might have hurt my feelings some but that's all."
"I noticed he wasn't being very gentlemanly, but I overlooked it because I thought perhaps he was still showing his temper over the Scofield incident."
"You're probably right. But, Miriam, this ain't, er,isn't about Sinclair, not entirely anyway. It's about me." Willow's smile was sad. "Being a man would be easier and a hell of a lot more fun but I ain't built right. So, I want you to teach me how to look and act like a fine and proper lady. You will, won't you?"
Merry chuckles bubbled and rolled out of Miriam. "Oh, Willow!" More chuckles. "I know I shouldn't laugh right now, but I can't help myself. You say the most awful things!"
Willow didn't know if she should be insulted or not, but since it was Miriam laughing at her, she gave her the benefit of the doubt. "I know my wanting to be a real lady is funny, but not that funny."
"No,no." Miriam laughed, gasping for breath. "No that, the part about you're not being built right. ~ Charlotte McPherren
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte McPherren
But I shall like my battle. This sort of day puts one in mood for it. Plenty of wood in the shed, jam and potatoes and apples in the cellar, hay and oats and Cressy in the barn. Pooh - what is winter? ~ Anne Bosworth Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by Anne Bosworth Greene
You're under no obligation to be who people think you are. Change, grow, rearrange yourself. Free and beautiful things always bloom and spark with no holding back. ~ Charlotte Eriksson
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Eriksson
What I felt that night, and what I did, I no more expected to feel and do, than to be lifted in a trance to the seventh heaven. Cold, reluctant, apprehensive, I had accepted a part to please another: ere long, warming, becoming interested, taking courage, I acted to please myself. ~ Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Bronte
Don't cling so tenaciously to ties of the flesh; save your constancy and ardour for an adequate cause; forbear to waste them on trite transient objects. ~ Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Bronte
All I wanted was my art and the chance to be the creator of my own world, my own reality. ~ Charlotte Eriksson
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Eriksson
A big group of daily friends or a white painted house with bills and mirrors, are not a necessity to me - but an intelligent conversation while sharing another coffee, is. ~ Charlotte Eriksson
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Eriksson
Ill-Success failed to crush us: the mere effort to succeed had given a wonderful zest to existence; it must be pursued. ~ Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Bronte
I believe that creature is a changeling: she is a perfect cabinet of oddities. ~ Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Bronte
I want to remember to notice the wonders of each day, in each moment, no matter where I am under any circumstance. ~ Charlotte Eriksson
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Eriksson
A Georgia peach, a real Georgia peach, a backyard great-grandmother's orchard peach, is as thickly furred as a sweater, and so fluent and sweet that once you bite through the flannel, it brings tears to your eyes. ~ Melissa Fay Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by Melissa Fay Greene
Scions of old families who've hit the skids do like to flaunt their illustrious ancestors.... ~ Charlotte MacLeod
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte MacLeod
Can't nobody make us do a thang once we git hard against it. And if anybody don't like that, you don't have to explain a thang to'm. All you got to say is, 'I'm Charlotte Simmons, and I don't hold with thangs like 'at.' And they'll respect you for that. ~ Tom Wolfe
Charlotte Greene quotes by Tom Wolfe
If it be true that God and man are in one image or likeness (and the affirmation that they are so is not unplausible) then it is the duty of man to bring out into its full splendor that Divine Image which is latent, on one side, in the complexity of his own nature. ~ William Batchelder Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by William Batchelder Greene
Power rarely ends up in the hands of those who start a revolution, or even those who further it; power sticks to those who bring it to a conclusion ~ Robert Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by Robert Greene
But Elizabeth was not formed for ill-humour; and though every prospect of her own was destroyed for the evening, it could not dwell long on her spirits; and having told all her griefs to Charlotte Lucas, whom she had not seen for a week, she was soon able to make a voluntary transition to the oddities of her cousin, and to point him out to her particular notice. The first two dances, however, brought a return of distress; they were dances of mortification. Mr. Collins, awkward ~ Jane Austen
Charlotte Greene quotes by Jane Austen
One of the biggest mistakes women make in business is that they aren't friendly enough. ~ Charlotte Beers
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Beers
You are lovely, brilliant, witty ... the incredible words which would relieve her of any need to repay him or refuse his gifts; loveliness and wit were priced higher than any gift he offered, while if a girl were loved, even old women of hard experience would admit her right to take and never give. ~ Graham Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by Graham Greene
How all my brain was in tumult, and all my heart in insurrection! Yet in what darkness, what dense ignorance, was the mental battle fought! ~ Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Bronte
There, on the far side of of the Atlantic, would be Maine, but despite the shared ocean, her island and this one were worlds apart. Where Inishmaan was gray and brown, its fragile man-made soil supporting only the hardiest of low-growing plants, the fertile Quinnipeague invited tall pines in droves, not to mention vegetables, flowers, and improbable, irrepressible herbs. Lifting her head, eyes closed now, she breathed in the damp Irish air and the bit of wood smoke that drifted on the cold ocean wind. Quinnipeague smelled of wood smoke, too, since early mornings there could be chilly, even in summer. But the wood smoke would clear by noon, giving way to the smell of lavender, balsam, and grass. If the winds were from the west, there would be fry smells from the Chowder House; if from the south, the earthiness of the clam flats; if from the northeast, the purity of sweet salt air. ~ Barbara Delinsky
Charlotte Greene quotes by Barbara Delinsky
Everyone gets the feeling that they know you and they know your life, and I felt really embarrassed by that. ~ Charlotte Gainsbourg
Charlotte Greene quotes by Charlotte Gainsbourg
When we benefit from CT scanners, M.R.I. devices, pacemakers and arterial stents, we can immediately appreciate how science affects the quality of our lives. ~ Brian Greene
Charlotte Greene quotes by Brian Greene
The thought of retirement set his nerves twitching and straining: he always prayed that death would come first. ~ Graham Greene
