I mean most girls are so dumb and all. After you neck them for a while, you can really watch them losing their brains. You take a girl when she really gets passionate, she just hasn't any brains. -Holden Caulfield ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
She's quite intelligent, in my stupidity. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
is he crazy?" --Harcourt-Brace editor on Holden Caulfield ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
I guess I'm just not the film femme fatale type. I giggle too much. I have freckles and a turned-up nose, and I walk like an athlete. ~ Joan Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Joan Caulfield
Now, 75 years later in an abundant society where people have laptops, cell phones, iPods, and minds like empty rooms, I still plod along with books. Instant information is not for me. I prefer to search library stacks because when I work to learn something, I remember it. And, Oprah, can you imagine curling up in bed to read a computer? Weeping for Anna Karenina and being terrified by Hannibal Lecter, entering the heart of darkness with Mistah Kurtz, having Holden Caulfield ring you up - some things should happen on soft pages, not cold metal. ~ Harper Lee
Caulfield quotes by Harper Lee
In what must surely be considered one of the great lost scripts of history (or a Saturday Night Live sketch), Chase brought his usual sensibility to a trial run, having Kevin discover The Catcher in the Rye and start smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee, and conversing with the shade of Holden Caulfield. ~ Brett Martin
Caulfield quotes by Brett Martin
Im a ridiculous sci-fi fan. In fact, I admit it freely; my manager is horrified. I just recently bought seasons two through five of Star Trek: The Next Generation on DVD. And Ive watched all the episodes, half on the plane and a few of them as I was going to sleep last night. Theres something about sci-fi thats comforting. ~ Emma Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Emma Caulfield
Lots of talk lately about the GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL that seems to be exclusively masculine. And how many of the characters in the GENIUS BOOKS are likable? Is Holden Caulfield likable? Is Meursault in The Stranger? Is Henry Miller? Is any character in any of these system novels particularly likable? Aren't they usually loathsome but human, etc., loathsome and neurotic and obsessed? In my memory, all the characters in Jonathan Franzen are total douchebags (I know, I know, I'm not supposed to use that, feminine imagery, whatever, but it is SO satisfying to say and think). How about female characters in the genius books? Was Madame Bovary likable? Was Anna Karenina? Is Daisy Buchanan likable? Is Daisy Miller? Is it the specific way in which supposed readers HATE unlikable female characters (who are too depressed, too crazy, too vain, too self-involved, too bored, too boring), that mirrors the specific way in which people HATE unlikable girls and women for the same qualities? We do not allow, really, the notion of the antiheroine, as penned by women, because we confuse the autobiographical, and we pass judgment on the female author for her terrible self-involved and indulgent life. We do not hate Scott Fitzgerald in "The Crack-Up" or Georges Bataille in Guilty for being drunken and totally wading in their own pathos, but Jean Rhys is too much of a victim. ~ Kate Zambreno
Caulfield quotes by Kate Zambreno
Money always ends up making you blue. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
It's the hipsters," David said. "It's retro. They need a place to convene and argue whether Holden Caulfield was deep or just a spoiled brat. ~ T.J. Klune
Caulfield quotes by T.J. Klune
If a body catch a body coming through the rye. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
I remember realizing, when I did Little Women [1994], that that was the only time girls that age were being written about. It was always boys - from David Copperfield to Lord of the Flies to Holden Caulfield. There were never young women going through adolescence or teen years; there were only little girls. ~ Winona Ryder
Caulfield quotes by Winona Ryder
Before 'Grease 2', I was called the next Richard Gere, then after 'Grease 2', nobody would touch me. ~ Maxwell Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Maxwell Caulfield
What I really felt like, though, was committing suicide. I felt like jumping out the window. I probably would've done it, too, if I'd been sure somebody'd cover me up as soon as I landed. I didn't want a bunch of stupid rubbernecks looking at me when I was all gory. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
I felt so lonesome, all of a sudden. I almost wished I was dead. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
When Mr. Caulfield was riding Stayner, his friend and pet horse, to work that morning, he passed the gas station. He was glad that he didn't have to worry about gas prices, like most people, because he didn't have a car. Instead, he just had to worry about getting odd looks from people who weren't used to seeing him ride a horse into town. At least, that was usually all that he had to worry about, but today was different. ~ Jesse Haubert
Caulfield quotes by Jesse Haubert
I find that when I'm ready for something to end, I transition quickly. But when something ends before its time, I find it hard to move on. ~ Emma Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Emma Caulfield
I think talking about one's love life is always ... It's a Pandora's box, best kept in journals. ~ Emma Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Emma Caulfield
I'd never seen that look on another face before, had never identified it in another person. I'd only met with it in fiction. But everyone falls in love with Holden Caulfield when they're sixteen. They read Catcher in the Rye and don't feel so alone. ~ Tiffanie DeBartolo
Caulfield quotes by Tiffanie DeBartolo
Beautiful prairies, bordered by lofty hills sparsely scattered with timber, stretch around. The massive fronds of the Pinus Ponderosa replace the elegant leaflets of the Cedar, no longer found save rarely, perchance, in some deep dell moistened by a purling streamlet. Groves of aspen appear here and there. The Balsam Poplar shows itself at intervals only, along the streams. The white racemes of the Service-berry flower, and the chaste flowers of the Mock Orange, load the air with their fragrance. Every copse re-echoes with the low drumming of the ruffed Grouse; the trees resound with the muffled booming of the Cock of the Woods. The Pheasant shirrs past; the scrannel-pipe of the larger Crane -- ever a watchful sentinel -- grates harshly on the ear; and the shrill whistle of the Curlew as it soars aloft aides the general concert of the re-opined year. I speak still of Spring; for the impressions of that jocum season are ever the most vivid, and naturally recur with the greatest force in after years. -- Alexander Caulfield Anderson describing the new brigade trail between Lac la Hache and Kamloops. ~ Nancy Marguerite Anderson
Caulfield quotes by Nancy Marguerite Anderson
In Catcher in the Rye, the protagonist Holden Caulfield mentions reading books that make him wish he could be friends with the author and be able to call him on the phone and so forth. I would consider a literary work that made someone feel this way a success. Furthermore, it's the only kind of success in literature that means anything to me. ~ Thomas Ligotti
Caulfield quotes by Thomas Ligotti
We love having the freedom that we have with the web; I mean, we don't have to answer to anybody. We have complete creative control; we don't have to worry about FCC regulations. ~ Emma Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Emma Caulfield
I hit adolescence only to discover my autobiography had already been written; plagiarized, in fact, by a man named J.D. Salinger who, in appropriating to himself my inner mass of pain and confusion, had given me the unlikely name of Holden Caulfield. ~ Stephen Metcalf
Caulfield quotes by Stephen Metcalf
He knew he was sounding a little Holden Caulfield-esque calling everyone a phony, but he really did think everyone was a phony. ~ Sarah Mlynowski
Caulfield quotes by Sarah Mlynowski
the sentence im reading is terrific ... ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
Holden Caulfield is the best character in literature, period. ~ Josh Hutcherson
Caulfield quotes by Josh Hutcherson
What happened to your lip?" Ravenna said to him. "It looks sore."
Miss Feather's fingers darted to her mouth.
"Thank you for your kind concern, Miss Caulfield." His eyes were very dark blue and still rimmed with the longest lashed Ravenna had ever seen on a man. Beauty and virility and confidence and sheer privileged arrogance combined to remarkable effect. No wonder these silly girls stared. "It was bitten," he said.
"Oh, dear." Lady Penelope pouted sweetly. "That must have been alarming."
"Not terribly. I have been bitten by cats before." The corner of his mouth twitched. "This one," he said, turning his dark, laughing gaze upon Ravenna, "was otherwise charming."

-Ravenna, Vitor, & Lady Penelope ~ Katharine Ashe
Caulfield quotes by Katharine Ashe
I want to be William Shakespeare and Galileo and Robert Frost. I want to be Sappho. I want to be Jane Austen. I want to be Holden Caulfield and Marilyn Monroe and Joan of Arc. I'm sad to think they came before me in history, they made their mark without me.
But they were there.
They happened. ~ Brenna Yovanoff
Caulfield quotes by Brenna Yovanoff
Jane Gallagher had wanted to know what time it was, but for some reason Holden Caulfield hadn't wanted Stradlater to tell her. When Stradlater refused to tell Holden Caulfieldwhether or not he had told Jane Gallagher what time it was, Holden Caulfield became enraged and attacked him in a fit or horological savagery, possibly because he was mentally ill and hated anyone byt him knowing what time it was ~ Frank Portman
Caulfield quotes by Frank Portman
He once told Allie and I that if he'd had to shoot anybody, he wouldn't've known which direction to shoot in. He said the Army was practically as full of bastards as the Nazis were. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
J. D. Salinger's Holden Caulfield is a literary descendant of Huck Finn: more educated and sophisticated, the son of affluent New Yorkers, but like Huck a youthful runaway from a world of adult hypocrisy, venality and, to use one of his own favourite words, phoniness. What particularly appals Holden is the eagerness of his peers to adopt that corrupt grownup behaviour. ~ David Lodge
Caulfield quotes by David Lodge
So the Trustees of Ohio State were right in 1956 when they canned the English instructor for assigning Catcher in the Rye to his freshman class. They knew there is no qualitative difference between the kid who thinks it's funny to fart in chapel, and Che Guevara. They knew then Holden Caulfield would found SDS. ~ E.L. Doctorow
Caulfield quotes by E.L. Doctorow
Holden Caulfield is the embodiment of what we mean by the phrase "young adult" – too young to be a grown-up, but too wise to the world to be completely innocent. He's caught in the in-between, and that in-between is what all young adult authors write about. ~ David Levithan
Caulfield quotes by David Levithan
Miss Caulfield, I beg your forgiveness." His voice was low and his gaze seemed to seek hers quite closely. "I intended you no harm, in truth. Still, I was unpardonably dishonorable to assail you and then tease you and then rescue you and then tease you yet again. Can you forgive me, or will those eyes like stars stare with accusation at me throughout the remaining weeks of this fete?"

-Vitor ~ Katharine Ashe
Caulfield quotes by Katharine Ashe
Books allow you to open doors, and chapters allow you to explore ~ Joe Caulfield I Think
Caulfield quotes by Joe Caulfield I Think
Holden Caulfield people are the bane of my existence. ~ Autumn Doughton
Caulfield quotes by Autumn Doughton
Now ... in an abundant society where people have laptops, cell phones, ipods and minds like empty rooms, I still plod along with books. ~ Harper Lee
Caulfield quotes by Harper Lee
There isn't a nightclub in the world that you can sit in for a long time unless you can at least buy some liquor and get drunk. Or unless you're with some girl that really knocks you out. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
I am Holden Caulfield, only less reckless, and more attractive. ~ Ben Brooks
Caulfield quotes by Ben Brooks
For a while now I've had this feeling that there's something that I'm supposed to be doing or something that I'm supposed to contribute. I don't know what that is yet, but it's been plaguing me - like I've missed my calling somehow. ~ Emma Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Emma Caulfield
I don't even like old cars. I mean, they don't even interest me at all. I'd rather have a goddam horse. A horse is at least human ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
the heart of the novel. Holden in New York where he has something close to a nervous breakdown. Caulfield narrates the story to us ~ Jonathan Coupland
Caulfield quotes by Jonathan Coupland
What I mean is, lots of time you don't know what interests you most till you start talking about something that doesn't interest you most. I mean you can't help it sometimes. What I think is, you're supposed to leave somebody alone if he's at least being interesting and he's getting all excited about something. I like it when somebody gets excited about something. It's nice. ~ J.D. Sallinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Sallinger
I definitely gravitate towards quality genre projects and genre of any kind whether it's science fiction, horror or really anything. I'm just drawn to quality. I don't think 'Darkness Falls' is horror; there isn't any gore by any stretch of the imagination. ~ Emma Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Emma Caulfield
I was trying to feel some kind of good-bye. I mean I've left schools and places I didn't even know I was leaving them. I hate that. I don't care if it's a sad good-bye or a bad good-bye, but when I leave a place I like to know I'm leaving it. If you don't you feel even worse. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
I'm a huge science fiction fan. ~ Emma Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Emma Caulfield
I've never considered stand-up. Luckily I'm given great lines to say. I'm not sure how great my timing would be if I actually had to come up with my own jokes. ~ Emma Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Emma Caulfield
It was that kind of a crazy afternoon, terrifically cold, and no sun out or anything, and you felt like you were disappearing every time you crossed a road. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
Girlchild ... unfolds a compelling, layered narrative told by a protagonist with a voice so fresh, original, and funny you'll be in awe. This novel rocks ... In Girlchild Tupelo Hassman has created a character you'll never forget. Rory Dawn Hendrix of the Calle has as precocious and endearing a voice as Holden Caulfield of Central Park. When you finish this novel, your sorrow at turning the last page will be eased by your excitement at what this sassy, talented author will do next. ~ Mameve Medwed
Caulfield quotes by Mameve Medwed
And I realize I've been betrayed by the two vices that fiction promised me I'd adore. Sal Paradise held up bottles of booze like a housewife in a detergent commercial. Holden Caulfield reached for his cigarettes like an act of faith. Even Huckleberry Finn tapped on his pipe with relief and satisfaction. If sex turns out to be this bad, I'm never reading again. ~ Craig Silvey
Caulfield quotes by Craig Silvey
I don't even like old cars. I'd rather have a goddam horse. A horse is at least human, for God's sake. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
I am beyond thrilled to be hitting the road with 'Singin' in the Rain.' As a huge fan of the original movie, the chance to bring this story to life on stage is something I couldn't pass up, and it'll be great visiting some of the beautiful theatres on the tour; some I've been to previously; some are going to be a brand new experience for me. ~ Maxwell Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Maxwell Caulfield
I think my worst nightmare is standing up in front of a group of people. ~ Emma Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Emma Caulfield
That's something that annoys the hell out of me- I mean if somebody says the coffee's all ready and it isn't ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
We're far more defined by our mistakes than the things that we succeed at. ~ Emma Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Emma Caulfield
He hated it when you called him a moron. All morons hate it when you call them a moron ~ Jerome Salinger
Caulfield quotes by Jerome Salinger
That digression business got on my nerves. I don't now. The trouble with me is, I like it when somebody digresses. It's more interesting and all ... lots of time you don't know what interests you most till you start talking about something that doesn't interest you most ... I like it when somebody gets excited about something. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
Suspicion prickled at Ravenna. "Who is to say you are not the murderer, and now that you know I have useful information you won't dispatch me too?"
"None but me."
She glanced into the darkness where the butler had disappeared, then back at the tall, dark man who had subdued her quite effectively in a stable the previous night. "This is the part where you pull out the bloodstained dagger, isn't it?"
"Why wouldn't I have done it earlier, before Monsieur Brazil knew of your involvement?"
"No doubt you only thought of it at this moment."
"It seems I am carelessly shortsighted."
"It does."
"Miss Caulfield?"
"You are not the murderer?"
"Go to bed."

-Ravenna & Vitor ~ Katharine Ashe
Caulfield quotes by Katharine Ashe
Don't tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody."

- Holden Caulfield

Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger

Caulfield quotes by Emma Caulfield
The best advice is to take it easy, respect speed limits and do not try to make up time lost in the tailbacks on the open road. ~ Emma Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Emma Caulfield
There isn't a single business where anybody feels secure. ~ Maxwell Caulfield
Caulfield quotes by Maxwell Caulfield
Certain things, they should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and just leave them alone. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
Girls. Jesus Christ. They can drive you crazy. - Holden Caulfield ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
We're all Holden Caulfield at fifteen, but when we grow up we want to be Atticus Finch ~ Shaun David Hutchinson
Caulfield quotes by Shaun David Hutchinson
If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. ~ J.D. Salinger
Caulfield quotes by J.D. Salinger
No matter how successful you get in Hollywood, you cannot rest. Your new movie doesn't open well; they're looking for the next person to replace you; it's always something. You never have true peace. ~ Emma Caulfield
