Do you read them? Faulkner, Hemingway, Fitzgerald?"
"Only if I have to. I try to avoid old dead white men. ~ John Grisham
Camino Island quotes by John Grisham
I did write some code in Java once, but that was the island in Indonesia. ~ Richard Stallman
Camino Island quotes by Richard Stallman
The hill was a stony island in a sea of green. ~ George R R Martin
Camino Island quotes by George R R Martin
The dominant literary mode of the twentieth century has been the fantastic. This may appear a surprising claim, which would not have seemed even remotely
conceivable at the start of the century and which is bound to encounter fierce resistance even now. However, when the time comes to look back at the century, it seems very likely that future literary historians, detached from the squabbles of our present, will see as its most representative and distinctive works books like J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, and also George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm, William Golding's Lord of the Flies and The Inheritors, Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat's Cradle, Ursula Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed, Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot-49 and Gravity's Rainbow. The list could readily be extended, back to the late nineteenth century with H.G. Wells's The Island of Dr Moreau and The War of the Worlds, and up to writers currently active like Stephen R. Donaldson and George R.R. Martin. It could take in authors as different, not to say opposed, as Kingsley and Martin Amis, Anthony Burgess, Stephen King, Terry Pratchett, Don DeLillo, and Julian Barnes. By the end of the century, even authors deeply committed to the realist novel have often found themselves unable to resist the gravitational pull of the fantastic as a literary mode.

This is not the same, one should note, as fantasy as a literary genre – of the authors l ~ Tom Shippey
Camino Island quotes by Tom Shippey
The nuclear industry has this amazing record, even equipment from generations one and two. But nuclear mishaps tend to come in these big events - Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and now Fukushima - so it's more visible. ~ Bill Gates
Camino Island quotes by Bill Gates
One place that I looked at a lot from space and which looks alluring is New Zealand, especially the North Island. It's a big broad valley with a river flowing through it, and you can see the wine-making dryness of the land. ~ Chris Hadfield
Camino Island quotes by Chris Hadfield
Jason had attended debutante balls. Knew the drill. My crew would have to conduct research on YouTube. Jason was popular on the cotillion scene. My guys weren't even on the radar. Asking Jason would get Whitney off my back. Inviting only Morris Island boys might plummet her into a depression. ~ Kathy Reichs
Camino Island quotes by Kathy Reichs
Dominance contests are rare, if they exist at all. During my 13 summers observing the Ellesmere Island pack, I saw none. ~ L. David Mech
Camino Island quotes by L. David Mech
Donald Westlake's Parker novels are among the small number of books I read over and over. Forget all that crap you've been telling yourself about War and Peace and Proust-these are the books you'll want on that desert island. ~ Lawrence Block
Camino Island quotes by Lawrence Block
Mathematics catalogues everything that is not self-contradictory; within that vast inventory, physics is an island of structures rich enough to contain their own beholders. ~ Greg Egan
Camino Island quotes by Greg Egan
I came from a poor family in Coney Island. I learned to write by reading the 'Post.' This was my education. ~ Jerry Della Femina
Camino Island quotes by Jerry Della Femina
I can't really believe that it's over. "I'll speak for her." Every face turns to where Sean Kendrick stands a little apart from the crowd, his arms crossed. "This island runs on courage, not blood," he says. His face is turned towards me, but his eyes are on Eaton and his groups. In the hush after he speaks, I can hear my heart thudding in my ears. ~ Maggie Stiefvater
Camino Island quotes by Maggie Stiefvater
That something I cannot yet define completely but the feeling comes when you write well and truly of something and know impersonally you have written in that way and those who are paid to read it and report on it do not like the subject so they say it is all a fake, yet you know its value absolutely; or when you do something which people do not consider a serious occupation and yet you know, truly, that it is as important and has always been as important as all th things that are in fashion, and when, on the sea, you are alone with it and know that this Gulf Stream you are living with, knowing, learning about, and loving, has moved, as it moves, since before man and that it has gone by the shoreline of that long, beautiful, unhappy island since before Columbus sighted it and that the things you find out about it, and those that have always lived in it are permanent and of value because that stream will flow, as it has flowed, after the Indians, after the Spaniards, after the British, after the Americans and after all the Cubans and all the systems of governments, the richness, the poverty, the martyrdom, the sacrifice and the venality and the cruelty are all gone as the high-piled scow of garbage, bright-colored, white-flecked, ill-smelling, now tilted on its side, spills off its load into the blue water, turning it a pale green to a depth of four or five fathoms as the load spreads across the surface, the sinkable part going down and the flotsam of palm fronds, corks, bottle ~ Ernest Hemingway
Camino Island quotes by Ernest Hemingway
I think the water dictates how food will taste in a country. In England the apples taste unlike apples grown in any other place. England is an island, there's a lot of salt in the air and in the water. I think that has something to do with it. ~ Gael Garcia Bernal
Camino Island quotes by Gael Garcia Bernal
Want to know what I'm thinking about?" Gat asked. "Yes," I said. "No," said Johnny. "I'm wondering how we can say your granddad owns this island. Not legally but actually." "Please don't get started on the evils of the Pilgrims," moaned Johnny. "No. I'm asking, how can we say land belongs to anyone?" Gat waved at the sand, the ocean, the sky. Mirren shrugged. "People buy and sell land all the time." "Can't we talk about sex or murder?" asked Johnny. ~ E. Lockhart
Camino Island quotes by E. Lockhart
Nothing less than the fate of the planet is at stake ... No place on the planet can remain an island of affluence in a sea of misery. ~ Maurice Strong
Camino Island quotes by Maurice Strong
I see her first while the Mexicana 727 is barreling down to Cozumel Island. I come out of the can and lurch into her seat, saying "Sorry," at a double female blur. The near blur nods quietly. The younger one in the window seat goes on looking out. I continue down the aisle, registering nothing. Zero. I never would have looked at them or thought of them again.

- 'The Women Men Don't See' (opening) ~ James Tiptree Jr.
Camino Island quotes by James Tiptree Jr.
Be an island unto yourself. Take refuge in yourself and not in anything else. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Camino Island quotes by Thich Nhat Hanh
Tell Crabby Abby he's going to sit on the naughty chair if he sinks one more island, Astrid said, catching her ball. ~ Jennifer Donnelly
Camino Island quotes by Jennifer Donnelly
Or she may find out what is at the end of the harbor road ... that wandering, twisting road like a nice red snake, that leads, so Elizabeth thinks, to the end of the world. Perhaps the Island of Happiness is there. ~ L.M. Montgomery
Camino Island quotes by L.M. Montgomery
I was a young kid from Long Island who wanted to do something large with her life, so I can relate to that. ~ Edie Falco
Camino Island quotes by Edie Falco
We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on? ~ John W. Vessey, Jr.
Camino Island quotes by John W. Vessey, Jr.
A woman's a different thing entirely. Who knows where a woman begins and ends? Listen, mistress, I have roots, I have roots deeper than this island.
Deeper than the sea, older than the raising of the lands. I go back into the dark. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Camino Island quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
Every night, millions of Americans spend their free hours watching television rather than engaging in any form of social interaction. What are they watching? In recent years we have seen reality television become the most popular form of television programming. To discover the nature of our current "reality," we might consider examples such as Survivor, the series that helped spawn the reality TV revolution. Every week tens of millions of viewers watched as a group of ordinary people stranded in some isolated place struggled to meet various challenges and endure harsh conditions. Ah, one might think, here we will see people working cooperatively, like our ancient ancestors, working cooperatively in order to "win"! But the "reality" was very different. The conditions of the game were arranged so that, yes, they had to work cooperatively, but the alliances by nature were only temporary and conditional, as the contestants plotted and schemed against one another to win the game and walk off with the Grand Prize: a million dollars! The objective was to banish contestants one by one from the deserted island through a group vote, eliminating every other contestant until only a lone individual remained - the "sole survivor." The end game was the ultimate American fantasy in our Age of Individualism: to be left completely alone, sitting on a mountain of cash!

While Survivor was an overt example of our individualistic orientation, it certainly was not unique in its glorifi ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Camino Island quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
I think the Caribbean countries face rising oceans and they face increase in the severity of hurricanes. This is something that is very, very scary to all of us. The island states in the world represent - I remember this number - one-half of 1 percent of the carbon emissions in the world. And they will - some of them will disappear. ~ Steven Chu
Camino Island quotes by Steven Chu
His mouth opens. From inside him comes a slow stream, without breath, without interruption. It flows up through his body and out upon me; it passes through the cabin, through the wreck; washing the cliffs and shores of the island, it runs northward and southward to the ends of the earth. Soft and cold, dark and unending, it beats against my eyelids, against the skin of my face. ~ J.M. Coetzee
Camino Island quotes by J.M. Coetzee
I've got a place in Portugal, which I like very much, but I've just been working in Malaysia for five weeks. My family had a chance to come over and we really loved it, particularly the island of Pangkor. ~ Ian Rush
Camino Island quotes by Ian Rush
It wouldn't bother me in the least if all the dogs in the world weere placed in a large sack and taken to some distant island - Greenland springs attractively to mind - where they could romp around and sniff each other's anuses to their hearts' content and would never bother or terrorize me again. The only kind of dog I would excuse from this roundup is poodles. Poodles I would shoot.
To my mind, the only possible pet is a cow. Cows love you. They are harmless, they look nice, they don't need a box to crap in, they keep the grass down, and they are so trusting and stupid that you can't help but lose your heart to them. Where I live in Yorkshire, there's a herd of cows down the lane. You can stand by the wall at any hour of the day or night, and after a minute the cows will all waddle over and stand with you, much too stupid to know what to do next, but happy just to be with you. They will stand there all day, as far as I can tell, possibly till the end of time. They will listen to your problems and never ask a thing in return. They will be your friends forever. And when you get tired of the, you can kill them and eat them. Perfect. ~ Bill Bryson
Camino Island quotes by Bill Bryson
It's this place. Whatever darkness came to the island, it's here to stay. Stick around long enough and it gets inside your skin, into your cells, like an infection. ~ Hunter Shea
Camino Island quotes by Hunter Shea
The writing of solid, instructive stuff fortified by facts and figures is easy enough. There is no trouble in writing a scientific treatise on the folk-lore of Central China, or a statistical enquiry into the declining population of Prince Edward Island. But to write something out of one's own mind, worth reading for its own sake, is an arduous contrivance only to be achieved in fortunate moments, few and far in between. Personally, I would sooner have written Alice in Wonderland than the whole Encyclopedia Britannica. ~ Stephen Leacock
Camino Island quotes by Stephen Leacock
What happened on that tiny island off the coast of Cuba called Flowering Cay at times seems like a half-remembered dream, one of those groggy remembrances that you're never quite certain you didn't just imagine. Other times I can recall it with such clarity it is as if it happened yesterday. Sitting in front of my typewriter as the palms sway gently at the urging of the trade winds, I almost wish I could forget everything. But then I think of Faith. ~ Bobby Underwood
Camino Island quotes by Bobby Underwood
Along the western coast of the Sahara desert, about half way between the Canary Islands and the Cape Verde Islands, lays a sand spit called Cape Barba's. In 1441, ships attached to Estêvão da Gama's fleet were sent by Prince Henry to explore the coastline south of Cape Barba's, which, five years earlier, was the farthest point reached by any of Prince Henry's captains. Although there are some conflicting stories regarding the discoveries of the mid-Atlantic islands, it is safe to assume that in 1501 João da Nova discovered Ascension Island. The desolate island remained deserted until it was rediscovered two years later on Ascension Day by Alfonso de Albuquerque. He was also the first European to discover the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. ~ Hank Bracker
Camino Island quotes by Hank Bracker
after we cleared the tunnel at Treasure Island, a panicky ~ James Patterson
Camino Island quotes by James Patterson
Long Island is a mess anyway! No one will miss it. ~ Rick Riordan
Camino Island quotes by Rick Riordan
Best of an island is once you get there - you can't go any farther ... you've come to the end of things ... ~ Agatha Christie
Camino Island quotes by Agatha Christie
Logan didn't know what he'd been expecting to see- maybe some ground-up powder or specially aged cocoa beans from an exotic island. Instead, he saw their faces, full of anticipation, staring back up at him. ~ Wendy Mass
Camino Island quotes by Wendy Mass
It must always have been God's day on that low, drowsy island, Edna thought. They ~ Kate Chopin
Camino Island quotes by Kate Chopin
When I had no books and had to learn everything I needed off by heart, and when I had to hide what books I had, I promised myself a library filled with the best editions I could afford. I have it now. Books bought out of books. A red room with deep chairs and a fireplace lit. Books of every kind, but no paperbacks, and certain shelves where First Editions are. This is not my study, where there are plenty of paperbacks, it is a contemplative island cut off from busyness, set outside of time. ~ Jeanette Winterson
Camino Island quotes by Jeanette Winterson
Listening to the bell I feel the afflictions in me begin to dissolve. My mind becomes calm, my body relaxed, and a smile is born on my lips. Following the sound of the bell, my breath guides me back to the safe island of mindfulness. In the garden of my heart, the flower of peace blooms beautifully. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Camino Island quotes by Thich Nhat Hanh
By their victory, the 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine Divisions and other units of the Fifth Amphibious Corps have made an accounting to their country which only history will be able to value fully. Among the Americans who served on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue. ~ Chester W. Nimitz
Camino Island quotes by Chester W. Nimitz
Supernatural gift, but it was a matter as much of his limitations as of his strengths. He could see human society in ways that most businessmen could not, because he was not very much a part of it. And consciously or not, by retiring to his floating island, he preserved this precious limitation. ~ Michael Lewis
Camino Island quotes by Michael Lewis
I grew up in the Bay Area until 1976, then I pretty much went all the way through primary and high school on Bainbridge, though like anybody who grows up on an island, I ran the first chance I got. ~ Jonathan Evison
