The origin of brain disease is in many cases predominantly dietary. Although several factors play into the genesis and progression of brain disorders, to a large extent numerous neurological afflictions often reflect the mistake of consuming too many carbs and too few healthy fats. ~ David Perlmutter
Brain Disease quotes by David Perlmutter
Maybe if we love ourselves healthy we will all heal? ~ Nikki Rowe
Brain Disease quotes by Nikki Rowe
Depression, we are told over and over again, is a brain disease, a chemical imbalance that can be adjusted by antidepressant medication. In an informational brochure issued to inform the public about depression, the US National Institute for Mental Health tells people that 'depressive illnesses are disorders of the brain' and adds that 'important neurotransmitters - chemicals that brain cells use to communicate - appear to be out of balance'. This view is so widespread that it was even proffered by the editors of PLoS [Public Library of Science] Medicine in their summary that accompanied our article. 'Depression,' they wrote, 'is a serious medical illness caused by imbalances in the brain chemicals that regulate mood', and they went on to say that antidepressants are supposed to work by correcting these imbalances.
The editors wrote their comment on chemical imbalances as if it were an established fact, and this is also how it is presented by drug companies. Actually, it is not. Instead, even its proponents have to admit that it is a controversial hypothesis that has not yet been proven. Not only is the chemical-imbalance hypothesis unproven, but I will argue that it is about as close as a theory gets in science to being dis-proven by the evidence. ~ Irving Kirsch
Brain Disease quotes by Irving Kirsch
It has been said that a disease becomes most acutely critical when the brain is affected. For it is the brain that is constantly directing the siege against all disease forces. The spirit of national selfishness is that brain disease of a people which shows itself in red eyes and clenched fists, in violence of talk and movements, all the while shattering its natural restorative powers. But the power of self-sacrifice, together with the moral faculty of sympathy and co-operation, is the guiding spirit of social vitality. ~ Rabindranath Tagore
Brain Disease quotes by Rabindranath Tagore
Football is entertainment in which the audience is expected to delight in gladiatorial action that a growing portion of the audience knows may cause the players degenerative brain disease. ~ George Will
Brain Disease quotes by George Will
We live in a culture that is much happier talking about organic brain disease than about psychic illness because the former suggests that something that is physically wrong in a brain is wholly unrelated to that person's upbringing or experiences in the world, but that is not necessarily true. ~ Siri Hustvedt
Brain Disease quotes by Siri Hustvedt
Bruce Miller, a neurologist at the University of California, San Francisco, studies elderly patients with a relatively common form of brain disease called frontotemporal dementia, or FTD. He's found that in some cases where the FTD is localized on the left side of the brain, people who had never picked up a paintbrush or an instrument can develop extraordinary artistic and musical abilities at the very end of their lives. As their other cognitive skills fade away, they become narrow savants. ~ Joshua Foer
Brain Disease quotes by Joshua Foer
Vertigo, it was thought at the time, could only be caused by a disease of the cerebellum. He observed this kind of patient for years and saw absolutely no symptoms of brain disease. ~ Robert Barany
Brain Disease quotes by Robert Barany
The brain-disease model overlooks four fundamental truths: (1) our capacity to destroy one another is matched by our capacity to heal one another. Restoring relationships and community is central to restoring well-being; (2) language gives us the power to change ourselves and others by communicating our experiences, helping us to define what we know, and finding a common sense of meaning; (3) we have the ability to regulate our own physiology, including some of the so-called involuntary functions of the body and brain, through such basic activities as breathing, moving, and touching; and (4) we can change social conditions to create environments in which children and adults can feel safe and where they can thrive. ~ Bessel A. Van Der Kolk
Brain Disease quotes by Bessel A. Van Der Kolk
Addiction is a brain disease. This is not a moral failing. This is not about bad people who are choosing to continue to use drugs because they lack willpower. ~ Michael Botticelli
Brain Disease quotes by Michael Botticelli
Parkinson's is described as a progressive idiopathic neurodegenerative disorder, a brain disease that will worsen with time for which no cause has as yet been identified. ~ David Perlmutter
Brain Disease quotes by David Perlmutter
The increased rate of brain disease in the NFL population is caused by the way the game is played within the rules. ~ Steve Gleason
Brain Disease quotes by Steve Gleason
It's something of a sacrilege nowadays to speak of insanity as anything but the chemical brain disease that on one level it is. But there were moments with my daughter when I had the distressed sense of being in the presence of a rare force of nature, such as a great blizzard or flood: destructive, but in its way astounding too. (4) ~ Michael Greenberg
Brain Disease quotes by Michael Greenberg
Faith is invulnerability, it feeds on stubbornness, self motivation and an endless stream of will. His body is mortal, but the spirit of faith cannot be killed. Faith is oxygen that feeds the brain, helping him to think sensibly. ~ Musin Almat Zhumabekovich
Brain Disease quotes by Musin Almat Zhumabekovich
A nation which fails to adequately remember salient points of
its own history, is like a person with Alzheimer's. And that can be a
social disease of a most destructive nature. ~ S.M. Sigerson
Brain Disease quotes by S.M. Sigerson
The object of my researches is the brain. The cranium is only a faithful cast of the external surface of the brain, and is consequently but a minor part of the principal object. ~ Franz Joseph Gall
Brain Disease quotes by Franz Joseph Gall
If you ask me, the hypothetical zenith of gaming technology is direct neural interface - no body to hamper you and your brain is in whatever you want it to be in. Plus it leads to existential uncertainty, which could be entertaining. ~ Yahtzee Croshaw
Brain Disease quotes by Yahtzee Croshaw
A man who is morally clean, other things being equal, has in every instance, greater agility, greater capacity, and greater endurance by far than the man who is not. While the latter is wasting his creative energies in useless pleasures, as well as in disease producing habits, the former is turning all of his creative energy into ability and genius, and the result is evident. ~ Christian D. Larson
Brain Disease quotes by Christian D. Larson
When I wasn't internally grumbling about my physical state, I found my mind playing and replaying scraps of songs and jingles in an eternal, nonsensical loop, as if there were a mix-tape radio station in my head. Up against the silence, my brain answered back with fragmented lines from tunes I'd heard over the course of my life - bits from songs I loved and clear renditions of jingles from commercials that almost drove me mad. ~ Cheryl Strayed
Brain Disease quotes by Cheryl Strayed
Six times their weight (an acceleration of 6-g). Most riders, unless they were off-duty astronauts or high-performance pilots wearing g-suits, would be rendered unconscious by this force. There would be no oxygen supply getting through to the brain at all. Typically, fairground rides with child riders aim to keep accelerations below 2-g, and those for adults experience at most 4-g. ~ Anonymous
Brain Disease quotes by Anonymous
In kindergarten we all stand before a choice - Do we accept the accepted to be accepted or do we stay logical and keep thinking? ~ L.H.
Brain Disease quotes by L.H.
I do know people and there are people in my family who have had Alzheimer's and dementia, and I appreciate the importance of communication and having contact with them. Communicating is an interesting thing with a condition like that. Sometimes it's difficult to communicate. If the brain becomes atrophied or certain channels of the brain become atrophied, then contact is what becomes really important. ~ Elliott Gould
Brain Disease quotes by Elliott Gould
Research has found that loss of bone density may be an even better predictor of death from atherosclerotic disease than cholesterol levels. ~ Atul Gawande
Brain Disease quotes by Atul Gawande
The lancet fluke (Dicrocoelium) infects the brain of ants by taking control and driving them to climb to the top of a blade of grass where they can be eaten by a cow. The ingested fluke then lays eggs in the cow gut. Eventually, the eggs exit the cow, and hungry snails eat the dung (and fluke eggs). The fluke enters the snail's digestive gland and gets excreted in sticky slime full of a seething mass of flukes to be drunk by ants as a source of moisture. ~ Darrel Ray
Brain Disease quotes by Darrel Ray
Subtle brain differences often cause people like me to respond differently - strangely even - to common life situations. Most of us have a hard time with social situations; some of us feel downright crippled. We get frustrated because we're so good at some things, while being completely inept at others. There's just no balance. It's a very difficult way to live, because our strengths seem to contrast so sharply with our weaknesses. "You read so well, and you're so smart! I can't believe you can't do what I told you. You must be faking!" I heard that a lot as a kid. ~ John Elder Robison
Brain Disease quotes by John Elder Robison
I snatched my gaze away from hers and tugged at the collar of my shirt. I wanted to know how she could talk with such authority on the subject. I wanted to know what evil she'd seen, but I wanted even more to escape the narrow store aisle. Warning bells pealed in my brain. 'She's crazy. Don't get involved. ~ Katherine Fleet
Brain Disease quotes by Katherine Fleet
If left untreated, Lyme disease can be crippling, yet it is a difficult illness to contract: a tick needs to attach itself to your body for at least twenty-four hours. Even then, two weeks worth of commonly prescribed antibiotics will kill the bacterium. ~ Michael Specter
Brain Disease quotes by Michael Specter
I was on a lit path, a raging firestorm for him – all of him. My body ached for it. I had found the antidote to my disease, and in those forced images of false memories, I found my salvation, a cure from myself, to what I would eventually become. ~ Carlyle Labuschagne
Brain Disease quotes by Carlyle Labuschagne
A tired operator and an energized monitor create a problematic imbalance in the mind. As the monitor searches for forbidden content, it continuously brings to mind what it is searching for. Neuroscientists have shown that the brain is constantly processing the forbidden content just outside of conscious awareness. The result: You become primed to think, feel, or do whatever you are trying to avoid. ~ Kelly McGonigal
Brain Disease quotes by Kelly McGonigal
Talking is the disease of age. ~ Ben Jonson
Brain Disease quotes by Ben Jonson
I sometimes imagine there is a clerk behind a desk situated between the brain and the mouth. It is his job to examine utterances on their way out, and stamp them with approval or send them back for reconsideration. If such a clerk exists, mine must be very harried and overworked; and on occasion he puts his head down on the desk in despair, letting things pass without so much as a second glance. Suhail ~ Marie Brennan
Brain Disease quotes by Marie Brennan
"I could use the fresh air. I think that put my brain to sleep."
She pointed at the text as if it was a piece of rotten meat.
"Physics?" I said. "You must need a more advanced text."
"No, it's just boring."
I picked the book up and double checked the title, to make sure I hadn't misidentified the subject.
"Boring?" I said. "How can physics be ... ?"
I looked up to see she'd already left the room. Simon pointed at the text, grinned and faked a yawn.
"Hold on," I said, striding after her. "Physics is not boring. Maybe you just need me to explain it better. Chloe? Chloe!" ~ Kelley Armstrong
Brain Disease quotes by Kelley Armstrong
To tell you the truth, I'm shocked, as I travel across this country, at how little people know or don't want to know about HIV/AIDS. There are a lot of people who don't know that HIV is one thing and AIDS is another. Those people just think it's one big old alphabet of a disease. ~ Sheryl Lee Ralph
Brain Disease quotes by Sheryl Lee Ralph
Even though my brain was a mess, what kept my soul whole was the warmth of the hands holding mine on both sides ~ Won-pyung Sohn
Brain Disease quotes by Won-pyung Sohn
A disastrous flaw in our design is that the heart always defies the brain. ~ Piper Payne
Brain Disease quotes by Piper Payne
Each of us is on our own trajectory – steered by our genes and our experiences – and as a result every brain has a different internal life. Brains are as unique as snowflakes. ~ David Eagleman
Brain Disease quotes by David Eagleman
Hopefully people can see my music is tethered to my brain. ~ John Mayer
Brain Disease quotes by John Mayer
The reward centers of the brain
where the pleasure of those high-calorie foods registers
also respond to other substances that bring about pleasure ... But those reward centers also respond to other gratifying things, like watching a sunset or experiencing a loving touch ... So while you may not be able to change the wiring in your brain, you can "feed" those reward centers other pleasures ... Biology isn't destiny when you have effective strategies ... ~ Bob Greene
Brain Disease quotes by Bob Greene
So much for a great opening speech, that sucker done tucked tail and is hiding in the deepest part of my brain, sucking its thumb. ~ Brandy Nacole
Brain Disease quotes by Brandy Nacole
Kathel opened his eyes as the wood he was touching went up in flames. He then realized he was still holding Mahgen's hand. He released it immediately, completely thrown by the fact that he had no brain.
-Madison Thorne Grey, Sustenance ~ Madison Thorne Grey
Brain Disease quotes by Madison Thorne Grey
She could ask for anything, she thought dizzily, anything
an end to pain or world hunger or disease, or for peace on earth. But then again, perhaps these things weren't in the power of angels to grant, or they would already have been granted. And perhaps people were supposed to find these things for themselves. ~ Cassandra Clare
Brain Disease quotes by Cassandra Clare
I wanted to cry. I wanted to hide. I wanted to drink. I wanted to... wrap my arms around him and never let go. My pulse felt erratic, and my thoughts jumbled around in my brain. I felt like a hyperactive, bipolar schizophrenic on crack. ~ Sibylla Matilde
Brain Disease quotes by Sibylla Matilde
With the advent of digital imaging I made the transition from trying to figure out how to do things to creating objects, characters and the whole cloth. It kind of freed up the analytical part of my brain and I had the opportunity to use more of the creative side of my brain for how things interact with light and integrate into stories. ~ John Dykstra
