During our glorious year of 1974–5, while I was dithering over gravitational waves, and Stephen was leading our merged group in black hole research, Stephen himself had an insight even more radical than his discovery of Hawking radiation. The great majority of theoretical physicists find this conclusion abhorrent. They are highly sceptical. And so, for forty-four years they have struggled with this so-called information-loss paradox. It is a struggle well worth the effort and anguish that have gone into it, since this paradox is a powerful key for understanding the quantum gravity laws. There are spaces of perfect nothing that they call black holes.
Nothing's impossible- that's what you think I'm trying to say.
But I'm not.
There are things that are impossible - unimaginable even- and here they are: That I broke you.
Betrayed you.
Said I'd given up on you. Sent you flying to a park in a thunderstorm.
That I've been wrong about you all along- saw something in your face each time you faded to your past, when the opposite was true.
That all this time you've been lost and that I won't get a second chance to find you.
Amelia your name is a song. It's a name you can't say without smiling or crying, without casting both shadows and light. But there are too many places to hide or get lost in a name like Amelia.
So this is me shouting that name. They say nobody ever escapes from a black hole. They don't know the strength in my Amelia. The strength in your grip when you want to stay out dancing- the strength in your wicked smile.

Ahmity reached out and created a ball of light in his hand sending it down past Jack and into the cave. He called out to Jack, "It will move as you command."

Jack frowned feeling a bit ridiculous talking to a ball of light and said, "Go three feet inside the cave and hover." The ball floated quickly to the cave entrance and past the rushing water to hover just inside the cave entrance. "Move further in another 5 feet."

There was a large shadow to the right. "Move right 10 feet." Jack commanded and the ball floated into a side tunnel and disappeared. Jack said, "Return to Ahmity."

The ball slowly accompanied Jack back up the cliff. When he reached the top Ahmity helped him up over the edge and waited for his report. Jack wiped the sweat from his forehead and said, "I could see a tunnel in the side of the cave about 10 feet inside the entrance. It's large enough for the trolls pass through."

Ahmity shook his head and said, "If the trolls traveled back to the Netherworld from here then it's possible the beasts escaped the same way."

Jack sighed and glanced back at the school then said, "Well there's no way to know for sure unless we take a short trip down a black hole."

Whenever I look at the night sky, I think about those dogs. Wearing these hand-stitched spacesuits, bright orange, with their paws sticking out. Big fishbowl helmets. How… crazy. Floating out and out into space. How bewildered they must have been, dying from oxygen deprivation. For what? They would have happily spent their days rummaging through trashcans.

For all anyone knows these dogs are still out there. Two dead mongrels in a satellite. Two dog skeletons in silly spacesuits. Gleaming dog skulls inside fishbowl helmets. They'll spin through the universe until they burn up in the atmosphere of an uncharted planet.
