Q: Which party had wildest celebration and how did it play out?

1) The 1972 Dolphins Super Bowl watching party for the David Tyree catch?

2) The Jack Nicklaus day after Thanksgiving morning in 2009?

3) The NFL referee Monday night football watching party at Ed Hochuli's house for the Seattle/Green Bay game?
- Steve G., Salt Lake City

SG: Here's my theory on the day after Thanksgiving in 2009: I think Jack Nicklaus heard the news, went out and bought a bottle of 20-year-old Pappy Van Winkle, found an antique shotgun with 300 rounds of ammo, then drove to a secluded spot in the woods 25 miles away from any other human being. He got out of his car, started jumping around and screaming like he won the Super Bowl, did this for 20 solid minutes, then started swigging whiskey and shooting at things while whooping it up. Eventually, he drank the entire bottle, got back into his car and just started happily ramming into trees until the car stopped moving. Then he passed out in the driver's seat, woke up the next morning and walked home. Anyway, my answer is Jack Nicklaus. ~ Bill Simmons Grantland Mailbag Oct. 28 2012
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons Grantland Mailbag Oct. 28 2012
Our favorite teams bring people together, keep family members close, bond people from different generations. Some of the happiest moments of my life involve something that happened with one of my teams. Some of the best relationships I ever had were with Boston athletes that I never even met. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
I am old enough to remember every Red Sox season since 1975. Baseball is long. Baseball takes forever. It's day in, day out, for six solid months - seven if you're lucky. Winning is always fun. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
I want the 'Book of Basketball' to do well if only so I can shop an absolutely ridiculous topic for my next book: like, a book about basketball cards, or an unauthorized biography of A. J. Daulerio. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
Leaders thrive when they feel creatively empowered, when they trust the people around them, when their confidence is swelling. Leaders make mistakes when they lose that same confidence, when they're fretting about their power base, when they're reacting instead of acting. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
Comebacks Baseball and malaria keep coming back. GENE MAUCH The problem with being Comeback Player of the Year is it means you have to go somewhere before you can come back. BERT BLYLEVEN It was like watching a movie you've seen a hundred times, only they snuck in an alternate ending. BILL SIMMONS, on the Red Sox winning the 2004 World Series ~ Peter Handrinos
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Peter Handrinos
Truth be told, nobody thought Dell's direct business model would work, at least back in the early 90s. As Bill Sharpe, head of the advertising agency that held the Dell Canada account from 1996 to 2006, told me, "I had a business partner in California who said, we have a client, Dell. It sells computers over the phone, and ships them to you. I said, 'There's no way, who's gonna buy a computer over the phone? They're complicated. ~ Heather Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Heather Simmons
Brook Lopez had a better game than Deron Williams ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
But that's the thing about basketball: you don't play games on paper. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
Five days after the Tsarnaev brothers blew up Boston's most sacred event, and just 24 hours after one brother was killed and the other was caught, everyone decided that it was OK to play baseball at Fenway again. The game happened on a Saturday afternoon, preceded by an emotional ceremony and many prayers. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
I started my Twitter account for selfish reasons: I wanted to have a place to post updates on my book signing tour and stuff like that. I never realized that I'd have so much fun tweeting. It's become the deleted scenes for my DVD of columns and podcasts. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
Am I the next Bill Simmons? I don't think so. I haven't built a media property. He's the best at finding voices he likes and paying people money to work for him. ~ Katie Nolan
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Katie Nolan
You always hear that tragedies put sports in perspective, that they prove we shouldn't care this much about the successes and failures of a bunch of wealthy strangers. I'm going the other way - sometimes, sports put everything else in perspective. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
Coffee is the highlight of my day. After coffee everything is downhill. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
I think one of the great things about a football season is that you see teams play in all types of environments, and if you can't handle one of them, you probably don't deserve to win anyway. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
One of my favorite things about basketball is that you can't break it down into some sort of science that makes total sense. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
wasn't Lily; it was Craig Simmons, the landscaper. Holding a sweat-stained baseball cap in his hand, the fortyish-something sandy-haired man stood on the front porch, still wearing his work boots, faded jeans and stained T-shirt. "Hello, Ms. Boatman, I just got back from lunch, noticed your car in the back drive and wondered if you had a chance to look through your house. I wanted to make sure everything is all right." "Yes, we went through the house, and nothing seems to be missing." That wasn't entirely true. She had only been to the library and kitchen, but according to Walt, Adam and Bill left empty ~ Bobbi Ann Johnson Holmes
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bobbi Ann Johnson Holmes
I am not going to say I have never spoken with Bill Simmons because I have. I respect him greatly. ~ Katie Nolan
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Katie Nolan
If you don't agree with me, I have two words for you: shut the fuck up. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
I always wanted to create a site that was sports and pop culture. '30 for 30' had a big impact because I loved how that was about finding, empowering and working with these incredible directors, and I thought the same thing could work for writers. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
The hardest achievement in acting - in my opinion, anyway - is nailing a role that absolutely nobody else could have played. Pacino owned Michael Corleone ... but DeNiro could have owned it as well. Who else, though, but Val Kilmer could have nailed Jim Morrison? Does anyone besides Will Ferrell pull off Ron Burgundy? ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
The NBA and NHL have different agendas: The NBA is much more protective of its players and its brand; the NHL has less to lose, and it's in their best interest to generate buzz any way they can. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
When I was in elementary school, we had the kid who threw chairs, the kid who stuttered, and the kid who went to the bathroom on himself ... but we never had the kid who came in one day and started shooting everyone. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
The best under-the-radar rivalry is Dodgers-Giants. I had no idea how deep that one was until I moved to California ... that one goes waaaaaaaaay back, and both sides absolutely detest each other. Fights in the stands, fights in the parking lot, the whole thing. It's every bit as bitter as Yankees-Red Sox without nearly the same hype. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
Gingrich is the "foremost intellectual" in the Republican party like Gene Simmons is the foremost intellectual in "Kiss". ~ Bill Maher
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Maher
Writing is like playing golf - you have to keep working at your swing. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
If you have a privately owned system, there's going to be monies leaving the community that will go towards shareholder dividends and high salaries. If you have a community owned, municipally owned facility, those extra resources are being reinvested in the community and they can be going to weatherization and other projects that are vested in the community. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
I pride myself as being a very supportive parent. I go to my daughter's soccer games. I hit most of them. I try to go to all of them. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
We don't realize how much the NFL is quietly drifting towards flag football. During the '80s, part of the defense's goal was to put the fear of God into offensive players ... that's fading away. ~ Bill Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Simmons
At a certain point, particularly in his third term, Mayor Bloomberg lost touch with the people he was serving. ~ Bill De Blasio
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill De Blasio
Inspiration starts somewhere. ~ Bill Gates
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Gates
Edison pressed on and designed a range of concrete furnishings - bureaus, cupboards, chairs, even a concrete piano - to go with his concrete houses. He promised that soon he would offer, for just $5, a double bed that would never wear out. The entire range was to be unveiled at a cement industry show in New York in 1912. In the event, when the show opened, the Edison stand was bare. No one from the Edison company ever offered an explanation. It was the last anyone ever heard of concrete furniture. As far as is known, Edison never discussed the matter. A ~ Bill Bryson
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Bryson
Bill Clinton was friendly and charming with just about everyone besides Hillary. He always seemed to want to give his company extra time. He was very generous that way. Like him or not, share his political ideas or not, find yourself in the same room with him, and you are hooked. You can't help but like him. But that was not Hillary. She was clearly all business, 24/7. Her private leadership style was based on pure fear and loathing - and I never saw her that turn off. Even in the president's presence, Mrs. Clinton operated at far greater than arm's length - a cheerless grifter always on her scheming way to someone or something else more important than the person directly in front of her. ~ Gary J. Byrne
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Gary J. Byrne
I think girls hate each other, no doesn't always mean no, you have to lie to stay married, women's sports are boring and the Olympics are gay. ~ Bill Maher
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Maher
When you've spent thirty years entering rooms filled with strangers you feel less pressure than when you've had only half that number of years of experience. You know what the room and the people in it probably hold for you and you go looking for it. If it's not there, you sense it earlier and leave to go about your business. You just know more about what is, what isn't, and how little time there is to learn the difference. ~ Dan Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Dan Simmons
Nothing had ever been so welcome by its absence. ~ Dan Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Dan Simmons
If you don't change your schedule, you'll be the same person you've always been. ~ Bill Hybels
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Hybels
Books ... were merely nodes in a near-infinite matrix of information that exists in four dimensions, evolving toward the idea of the concept of the approximation of the shadow of Truth vertically through time as well as longitudinally through knowledge. ~ Dan Simmons
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Dan Simmons
You only go around once, and you've got to grab for all the gusto you can. ~ Bill George
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill George
We went from rotten sinners to born-again saints in a single moment when we accepted salvation. Once the blood of Jesus has wiped out sin, you can't get any cleaner. That doesn't mean we can avoid the hurdles and issues that come with changing your life and renewing your mind. Maturity is a process. But as my associate Kris says, "You are not a sinner; you are a saint. It doesn't mean that you can't sin; it just means that you are no longer a professional." That's the story of your life. ~ Bill Johnson
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Johnson
The Republicans released their 'Pledge to America.' It's 21 pages of phony charts and bad ideas. Sarah Palin got a copy, and she said, 'How am I supposed to fit all this crap on my hand? ~ Bill Maher
Bill Simmons Mailbag quotes by Bill Maher
Harness the Power of Accelerated Failure - the faster you fail, the faster you succeed. ~ Bill Bonner
