If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have paradise in a few years. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
Turing attended Wittgenstein's lectures on the philosophy of mathematics in Cambridge in 1939 and disagreed strongly with a line of argument that Wittgenstein was pursuing which wanted to allow contradictions to exist in mathematical systems. Wittgenstein argues that he can see why people don't like contradictions outside of mathematics but cannot see what harm they do inside mathematics. Turing is exasperated and points out that such contradictions inside mathematics will lead to disasters outside mathematics: bridges will fall down. Only if there are no applications will the consequences of contradictions be innocuous. Turing eventually gave up attending these lectures. His despair is understandable. The inclusion of just one contradiction (like 0 = 1) in an axiomatic system allows any statement about the objects in the system to be proved true (and also proved false). When Bertrand Russel pointed this out in a lecture he was once challenged by a heckler demanding that he show how the questioner could be proved to be the Pope if 2 + 2 = 5. Russel replied immediately that 'if twice 2 is 5, then 4 is 5, subtract 3; then 1 = 2. But you and the Pope are 2; therefore you and the Pope are 1'! A contradictory statement is the ultimate Trojan horse. ~ John D. Barrow
Bertrand Russel quotes by John D. Barrow
When I met you, Peri, I thought this girl doesn't know it but she carries the three passion of Bertrand Russel: the longing for love, the search for knowledge and unbearable compassion for the suffering of mankind. ~ Elif Shafak
Bertrand Russel quotes by Elif Shafak
What was exciting in the Victorian Age, would leave a man of franker epoch quite unmoved. The more prudes restrict the permissible degree of sexual appeal, the less is required to make such an appeal effective. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
Freedom in education has many aspects. There is first of all freedom to learn or not to learn. Then there is freedom as to what to learn. And in later education there is freedom of opinion. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
We have in fact, two kinds of morality, side by side: one which we preach, but do not practice, and another which we practice, but seldom preach. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
Every proposition which we can understand must be composed wholly of constituents with which we are acquainted. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
Do you think that, if you were granted omnipotence and omniscience and millions of years in which to perfect your world, you could produce nothing better than the Ku Klux Klan or the Fascists? ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
The greatest challenge to any thinker is stating the problem in a way that will allow a solution. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
Many a marriage hardly differs from prostitution, except being harder to escape from. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
Frege has the merit of ... finding a third assertion by recognising the world of logic which is neither mental nor physical. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
Some of the deepest truths are simple, when seen in the clearest light, and it takes a lucid intellect to grasp them so thoroughly that their simplicity can be brought into that light and offered to all, not just the privileged few. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
The use of self control is like the use of brakes on train. It is useful when you find yourself in wrong direction but merely harmful when the direction is right ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
The difficulty is old, but none the less real. An omnipotent being who created a world containing evil not due to sin must Himself be at least partially evil. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
Life is nothing but a competition to be the criminal rather than the victim. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
Reason may be a small force, but it is constant, and works always in one direction, while the forces of unreason destroy one another in futile strife. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
The word conscience covers as a matter of fact several different feelings; the simplest of these is the fear of being found out. You, reader, have, I am sure, lived a completely blameless life, but if you will ask some one who has at some time acted in a manner for which he would be punished if it became known, you will find that when discovery seemed imminent, the person in question repented of his crime. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
You may kill an artist or a thinker, but you cannot acquire his art or his thought. You may put a man do death because he loves his fellow-men, but you will not by so doing acquire the love which made his happiness. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
I read Zuleika Dobson with pleasure. It represents the Oxford that the two World Wars have destroyed with a charm that is not likely to be reproduced anywhere in the world for the next thousand years. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
Dread of disaster makes everybody act in the very way that increases the disaster. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
And in contrast to the Communist revolution in Russia and the Communist attempts at revolution in Germany from 1918 through 1923, Hitler's were virtually bloodless."
-- Hitler: Beyond Evil and Tyranny, p. 44 ~ Russel H.S. Stolfi
Bertrand Russel quotes by Russel H.S. Stolfi
In his school, Bertrand Russell thought it was better if they had the sex, so they could give their undivided attention to mathematics, which was the main thing. ~ Paul Goodman
Bertrand Russel quotes by Paul Goodman
Reason is a harmonising, controlling force rather than a creative one. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
Superstorm Sandy inflicted havoc and heartache throughout the Northeast, hitting the Big Apple and its surrounding coastal towns hard. ~ Russel Honore
Bertrand Russel quotes by Russel Honore
Much of the most important evils that mankind have to consider are those which they inflict upon each other through stupidity or malevolence or both. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
RUSSEL. When he grows up I want to be able to point to him and say: "There goes my son -- the man". I want to live in a masculine culture.
BONGI. That's a contradiction in terms. ~ Valerie Solanas
Bertrand Russel quotes by Valerie Solanas
Insight, untested and unsupported, is an uncertain guarantee of the truth. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
While I wanted to think everything false, it must necessarily be that I who thought was something; and remarking that this truth, I think, therefore I am, was so solid and so certain that all the most extravagant suppositions of the sceptics were incapable of upsetting it, I judged that I could receive it without scruple as the first principle of the philosophy that I sought. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
A stable social system is necessary, but every stable system hitherto devised has hampered the development of exceptional artistic or intellectual merit. How much murder and anarchy are we prepared to endure for the sake of great achievements such as those of the Renaissance? ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
The object of education ought not to be to make all men think alike, but to make each think in the way which is the fullest expression of his own. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
The typical Westerner wishes to be the cause of as many changes as possible in his environment; the typical Chinaman wishes to enjoy as much and as delicately as possible. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
The cities, which had been the bearers of culture, were especially hard hit; substantial citizens, in large numbers, fled to escape the tax-collector. It was not till after the death of Plotinus that order was re-established and the Empire temporarily saved by the vigorous measures of Diocletian and Constantine. Of all this there is no mention in the works of Plotinus. He turned aside from the spectacle of ruin and misery in the actual world, to contemplate an eternal world of goodness and beauty. In this he was in harmony with all the most serious men of his age. To all of them, Christians and pagans alike, the world of practical affairs seemed to offer no hope, and only the Other World seemed worthy of allegiance. To the Christian, the Other World was the Kingdom of ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
What vanity needs for its satisfaction is glory, and it's easy to have glory without power. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
Descartes, the father of modern philosophy ... would never-so he assures us-have been led to construct his philosophy if he had had only one teacher, for then he would have believed what he had been told; but, finding that his professors disagreed with each other, he was forced to conclude that no existing doctrine was certain. ~ Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russel quotes by Bertrand Russell
The free intellect is the chief engine of human progress. ~ Bertrand Russell
