Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
Let us not imagine that we obscure the glory of the Son by the great praise we lavish on the Mother; for the more she is honored, the greater is the glory of her Son. There can be no doubt that whatever we say in praise of the Mother gives equal praise to the Son. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
What we love we shall grow to resemble. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
The peacemakers shall be called the sons of God, who came to make peace between God and man. What then shall the sowers of discord be called, but the children of the devil? And what must they look for but their father's portion? ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux

Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
I have ascended to the highest in me, and look, the Word is towering above that. I have descended to explore my lowest depths, and I found Him deeper still. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
Ingratitude is the soul's enemy ... Ingratitude is a burning wind that dries up the source of love, the dew of mercy, the streams of grace. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
You wish me to tell you why and how God should be loved. My answer is that God himself is the reason he is to be loved. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux

Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
Grace is necessary to salvation, free will equally so - but grace in order to give salvation, free will in order to receive it. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
The man who is wise, therefore, will see his life as more like a reservoir than a canal. The canal simultaneously pours out what it receives; the reservoir retains the water till it is filled, then discharges the overflow without loss to itself ... Today there are many in the Church who act like canals, the reservoirs are far too rare ... You too must learn to await this fullness before pouring out your gifts, do not try to be more generous than God. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
Jesus to me is honey in the mouth, music in the ear, a song in the heart, ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux

Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
We taste Thee, O Thou Living Bread,
And long to feast upon Thee still:
We drink of Thee, the Fountainhead
And thirst our souls from Thee to fill. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
True penance consists in regretting without ceasing the faults of the past, and in firmly resolving to never again commit that which is so deplorable. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
O wretched slaves of Mammon, you cannot glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ while you trust in treasures laid up on earth: you cannot taste and see how gracious the Lord is, while you are hungering for gold. If you have not rejoiced at the thought of His coming, that day will be indeed a day of wrath to you. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux

Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
In his greediness, he counts all that he has clutched as nothing in comparison with what is beyond his grasp, and loses all pleasure in his actual possessions by longing after what he has not, yet covets. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
Do what Jesus says, ... what he commands through his ministers who are in the Church [see 1 Cor 6:4]. Be subject to his vicars, your leaders, not only those who are gentle and kind, but even those who are overbearing [see 1 Pt 2:18]. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
For Abelard, the death of Christ on the Cross did not, strictly speaking, redeem man: it only offered him an example of supreme humility, charity, and self-sacrifice. Bernard asserts, against Abelard, that Christ became man precisely in order to redeem mankind from sin, deliver man from the power of the devil, and to become, instead of fallen Adam, the new head of a redeemed and sanctified human race. Jesus, says Saint Bernard, not only taught us justice but gave us justice. He not only showed us His love by dying for us on the Cross, but by the effects of His death He really and objectively causes His charity to exist and act in our hearts. In, doing so, He actually destroys sin in our souls and communicates to us a new life which is totally supernatural and divine. The effect of our redemption is therefore a complete and literal regeneration of those souls to whom its fruits are applied. Without this dogmatic basis the whole mystical theology of Saint Bernard would be incomprehensible. The purpose of all his mystical and ascetic teaching is to show us how to co-operate with the action of divine grace so that our redemption and regeneration may not remain a dead letter but may actually influence all our conduct and find expression in every part of our lives ~ Thomas Merton
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Thomas Merton
It is so that these impious ones wander in a circle, longing after something to gratify their yearnings, yet madly rejecting that which alone can bring them to their desired end, not by exhaustion but by attainment. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
Action and contemplation are ... ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
It is no great thing to be humble when you are brought low; but to be humble when you are praised is a great and rare attainment. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
Love is alone sufficient by itself, it pleases by itself and for it's own sake. It is itself a merit, and itself it's own recompense. It seeks neither cause, nor consequences beyond itself. It is its own fruit, its own object and usefulness. I love because I love you, I love that I may love. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
To them that long for the presence of the living God, the thought of Him is sweetest itself: but there is no satiety, rather an ever-increasing appetite... ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux

Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
From the best bliss that earth imparts, we turn unfilled to Thee again. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
After the dedication, Eleanor saw Bernard privately, probably at her own request. He came prepared to offer more spiritual comfort, thinking that she too might be suffering qualms of conscience over Vitry, but he was surprised to learn that she was not. Nevertheless, several matters were indeed troubling her, not the least the problems of her sister. She asked him to use his influence with the Pope to have the excommunication on Raoul and Petronilla lifted and their marriage recognised by the Church. In return, she would persuade Louis to make peace with Theobald of Champagne and recognise Pierre de la Chatre as Archbishop of Bourges.

Bernard was appalled at her brazen candour. In his opinion, these affairs were no business of a twenty-two-year-old woman. He was, in fact, terrified of women and their possible effects on him. An adolescent, first experiencing physical desire for a young girl, he had been so filled with self-disgust that he had jumped into a freezing cold pond & remained there until his erection subsided. He strongly disapproved of his sister, who had married a rich man; because she enjoyed her wealth, he thought of her as a whore, spawned by Satan to lure her husband from the paths of righteousness, and refused to have anything to do with her. Nor would he allow his monks any contact with their female relatives.

Now there stood before him the young, worldly, and disturbingly beautiful Queen of France, intent upon meddling in matte ~ Alison Weir
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Alison Weir
The great self-limitation practiced by man for ten centuries yielded, between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, the whole flower of the so-called "Renaissance." The root, usually, does not resemble the fruit in appearance, but there is an undeniable connection between the root's strength and juiciness and the beauty and taste of the fruit. The Middle Ages, it seems, have nothing in common with the Renaissance and are opposite to it in every way; nonetheless, all the abundance and ebullience of human energies during the Renaissance were based not at all on the supposedly "renascent" classical world, nor on the imitated Plato and Virgil, nor on manuscripts torn from the basements of old monasteries, but precisely on those monasteries, on those stern Franciscians and cruel Dominicans, on Saints Bonaventure, Anselm of Canterbury, and Bernard of Clairvaux. The Middle Ages were a great repository of human energies: in the medieval man's asceticism, self-abnegation, and contempt for his own beauty, his own energies, and his own mind, these energies, this heart, and this mind were stored up until the right time. The Renaissance was the epoch of the discovery of this trove: the thin layer of soil covering it was suddenly thrown aside, and to the amazement of following centuries dazzling, incalculable treasures glittered there; yesterday's pauper and wretched beggar, who only knew how to stand on crossroads and bellow psalms in an inharmonious voice, suddenly started to bloom w ~ Vasily Rozanov
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Vasily Rozanov
It was love that motivated His self-emptying, that led Him to become a little lower than angels, to be subject to parents, to bow His head beneath the Baptist's hands, to endure the weakness of the flesh, and to submit to death even upon the cross ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
From whom but the Devil did this advice come under which you are acting? Those who are urging you to repeat your former wrongdoings against an innocent person are seeking in this not your honour but their own convenience. They are clearly the enemies of your crown and the disturbers of your realm. ~ Alison Weir
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Alison Weir
Let us then cast ourselves at the feet of this good Mother, and embracing them let us not depart until she blesses us, and accepts us for her children. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux

Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
There are some who wish to learn for no other reason than that they may be looked upon as learned, which is ridiculous vanity ... Others desire to learn that they may morally instruct others, that is love. And, lastly, there are some who wish to learn that they may be themselves edified; and that is prudence. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux

Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux, Saint
There can have been no doubt in Eleanor's mind as to what was expected of her as a wife. In her day, women were supposed to be chaste both inside and outside marriage, virginity and celibacy being highly prized states. When it came to fornication, women were usually apportioned the blame, because they were the descendants of Eve, who had tempted Adam in the Garden of Eden, with such dire consequences. Women, the Church taught, were the weaker vessel, the gateway to the Devil, and therefore the source of all lechery. St. Bernard of Clairvaux wrote: "To live with a woman without danger is more difficult than raising the dead to life." Noblewomen, he felt, were the most dangerous so fall. Women were therefore kept firmly in their place in order to prevent them from luring men away from the paths of righteousness.

Promiscuity--and its often inevitable consequence, illicit pregnancy--brought great shame upon a woman and her family, and was punishable by fines, social ostracism, and even, in the case of aristocratic and royal women, execution. Unmarried women who indulged in fornication devalued themselves on the marriage market. In England, women who were sexually experienced were not permitted to accuse men of rape in the King's court. Female adultery was seen as a particularly serious offence, since it jeopardized the laws of inheritance.

Men, however, often indulged in casual sex and adultery with impunity. Because the virtue of high-born women was jealo ~ Alison Weir

Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
We must know, then, what we are, and that it is not of ourselves that we are what we are. Unless we know this thoroughly, either we shall not glory at all, or our glorying will be vain. Finally, it is written, "If thou know not, go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock" (Song of Solomon. 1:8). And this is right. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux

I remind you, my dear friends, of what I said when I was with you: do not receive any outside or unknown preacher, unless he be sent by your bishop or preaches with the permission of the pope. If then you are wise, you will show yourself rather as a reservoir than as a canal. For a canal spreads abroad water as it receives it, but a reservoir waits until it is filled before overflowing, and thus communicates, without loss to itself, its superabundant water. In the Church at the present day, we have many canals, few reservoirs. ~ Bernard Of Clairvaux

Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by Bernard Of Clairvaux
HIGGINS [sitting down beside her] Rubbish! you shall marry an ambassador. You shall marry the Governor-General of India or the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, or somebody who wants a deputy-queen. I'm not going to have my masterpiece thrown away on Freddy.

LIZA. You think I like you to say that. But I haven't forgot what you said a minute ago; and I won't be coaxed round as if I was a baby or a puppy. If I can't have kindness, I'll have independence.

HIGGINS. Independence? That's middle class blasphemy. We are all dependent on one another, every soul of us on earth.

LIZA [rising determinedly] I'll let you see whether I'm dependent on you. If you can preach, I can teach. I'll go and be a teacher.

HIGGINS. What'll you teach, in heaven's name?

LIZA. What you taught me. I'll teach phonetics.

HIGGINS. Ha! Ha! Ha! ~ George Bernard Shaw
Bernard Of Clairvaux quotes by George Bernard Shaw
I've never really seen myself as one of the premier guys. I work hard and strive to be one of the best at my position, but never do I tell myself, "I'm one of the best guys." I'm just excited that Vita Coco invited me to be a part of their team with guys like Lynch and Jones. Any time you can be mentioned with guys like Jones and Lynch it's an honor. ~ Giovani Bernard
