Discussion of theology is not for everyone, I tell you, not for everyone-it is no such inexpensive or effortless pursuit. We're told in Psalms 46:10, to "be still," or to "cease striving," and know that He is God. Some people are familiar with this verse but not the larger context, which is that of someone looking over the remains of a battlefield. The original Hebrew is suggestive of stopping the fight, letting go, and relaxing.

I sense my own place in the rhythm of the seasons, from seed time to harvest, the falling leaves and the stillness of winter. It is only through silent awareness that our physical and mental nature can change. This change is completely spontaneous. If we make an effort to change we do no more than shift our attention from one level, from one thing, to another. We remain in a vicious circle. This only transfers energy from one point to another.
