Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
If I could do just one near perfect thing I'd be happy. They'd write it on my grave or when they scattered my ashes. On second thoughts, I'd rather hang around and be there with my best friend if she wants me. ~Belle and Sebastian "If She Wants Me ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
We said it from the beginning. No strings. No regrets. We lay, tangled in a web of sheets, Limbs and anemic light, And we passed promises back and forth like slippery stars. You told me you were recovering from A broken heart. I told you I was recovering from A broken life. Fair enough, we agreed and laughed. We wrote stories on our bodies. Middles and endings Etched onto our feet and the palms of our hands. Our hopes were lettered in black and silver On a background of stark white flesh. We traded words on our tongues like tiny drops of melted sugar. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton

In fact, I noticed everything about Alex. Like that his left nostril was slightly larger than his right nostril. And the way he ate a Kit Kat bar: chocolate first and then the layers of wafer separately. I could pick his one sneeze in a room full of sneezers. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton

Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
He looks at you like you're the only person in the room. Like he's trapped underwater and you're an oxygen tank. Like he's in anaphylactic shock and you're an EpiPen. ~ Autumn Doughton

Here's what I think: it's one thing to know that rejection is coming, and it's an entirely different thing when it arrives. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
Poetry and song lyrics might want us to believe that finding love is like uncovering buried treasure, but now I know the truth. There's no joy or celebration in love. There are no happy endings. There is simply me and her and a crushing pain. What's left after that? An entire life of mute should-haves and second-bests. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton

She's smiling at me, and she's just so fucking cute. I have to ask: "And the other side?"
Aimee shrugs. "Douchebags. ~ Autumn Doughton

Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
Maybe the problem with lying is that once you start faking it, it's impossible to tell where the make-believe you ends and the real you begins. It's hard to be who you are, but it's even harder to keep up the lie. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
Life is unpredictable and it doesn't follow a map. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton

Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
So let me get this straight," he says. "Death is the only destination and nothing else is real because it's not perfect or final?"
I roll my eyes. "Okay, Nietzsche. That's not exactly what I said."
"I just think people are always doing that."
"Doing what?"
"They're always asking themselves, 'Where am I going?' but they're never looking around and asking, 'Where am I?' Everything's about what's going to be next instead of noticing what's happening right now. But the now is the only thing that's actually real. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
If the question is: what's more mortifying than professing your love to a boy and having him turn and walk away from you? The answer is: professing your love to a boy, while standing in front of your friends, parents and a hundred strangers, and having him turn and walk away from you. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
I don't want to always look at things from a distance so that I can hold on to this idea that they're so perfect and flawless. I want to be close enough to see the cracks and all of the dark spaces. And if it's true that all of my tomorrows are really beginning right this minute, I know exactly how I want them to go. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
Pain doesn't really go away because someone kisses it better. Sadness doesn't recede because a person posts an inspiring quote on your Facebook wall. Grief doesn't sink into the shadows the moment the sun comes up. You can't sleep your way through misery. There are some hurts that become a part of you, like your blood or your eyes or your teeth. Those are the ones that need to be lived over and over again. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton

I think they look like little pieces of green confetti decorating the grey cement walk and that seems all wrong. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton

Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
And, you know, when all is said and done, it really is better to wind up feeling scared and stupid than not feel anything at all. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
If she wanted to, she could reach into my chest and rip my heart out of my body because it already belongs to her. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
Ending

I lied.
I wanted you from that moment.
I wanted you, wrapped in starlight and reflections,
To be tied up with strings.
And ropes.
And chains.
I wanted you hanging around my neck
Like a charm I could press to my heart and
Make three wishes on.

But I trapped the want
And the words inside my mouth.
I buried those secret things under my tongue,
Biting down until blood and bitterness
Filled my mouth
And poured down the back of my throat.

In the beginning, you said, there was only water.
But what about the end?

I closed my eyes and lay flat
With my back to the ocean
And my face to the sky.
I lifted my hands and caught ribbons of wind
Underneath my fingernails.
I rode the water for so long,
I forgot what my skin felt like when it was dry. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
Maybe the truth is that all I've ever wanted is to be good for somebody else. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
Happiness isn't something that you plan for. It comes knocking unexpectedly, just like opportunity. And it's up to you to answer the door and invite it inside. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
Her. One word. A simple pronoun that seems like an entire vocabulary. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
You're the bright spot in my day. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
You, Cole. I like you. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
Every couple of days I have to remind myself that I'm really okay. And it's not the pretend kind of okay. It's the kind that you feel from the inside out. It's the kind of okay that has me thinking about outfits and coffee first thing in the morning, and homework that's due later this week, and that I need to call Jodi back, and what Cole's abs look like when he flexes. It's the kind of okay that makes life a zillion times more bearable and also has me waiting for the other shoe to drop. I ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
And on the bad days I'm not even sure that I exist anymore. Today is a bad day. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
Then I wake up. And, it's not the purple- hued light of the house at three in the morning that has woken me, or the sound of Payton stumbling into the bathroom. It's a hand.
A single hand.
So innocuous.
I feel it before my eyes blink open. A slight weight on my hip. A current of electricity running through me, reshaping the air that I breathe. It takes only a second for me to process what it is, to rearrange the spaces in my head around the feel of his fingers on my body. ~ Autumn Doughton
Autumn Doughton quotes by Autumn Doughton
It is typical of Oxford, I said, to start the new year in autumn. ~ Evelyn Waugh
Autumn Doughton quotes by Evelyn Waugh
Women's words are as light as the doomed leaves whirling in autumn, Easily swept by the wind, easily drowned by the wave. ~ Ovid
Autumn Doughton quotes by Ovid
You young romantics find your "soul" in the strangest places. ~ Emilie Autumn
Autumn Doughton quotes by Emilie Autumn
Yes, Halloween excites me. That whole time of year, autumn, I find exhilarating. A passionate season. The others are so bland. In the fall, you see opportunities for change. Real change. Possibilities present themselves. None of the renewal and redemption cliches of spring. No. Something darker and more primal and more important than that. ~ Alice LaPlante
Autumn Doughton quotes by Alice LaPlante
It almost seems as if autumn were the true creator, more creative than the spring, which is too even-toned, more creative when it comes with its will-to-change and shatters the much too ready-made, self-satisfied and really almost bourgeois-complacent image of summer. ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
Autumn Doughton quotes by Rainer Maria Rilke
It is not seen as insane when a fighter, under an attack that will inevitable lead to his death, chooses to take his own life first. In fact, this act has been encouraged for centuries, and is accepted even now as an honorable reason to do the deed. How is it any different when you are under attack by your own mind? ~ Emilie Autumn
Autumn Doughton quotes by Emilie Autumn
You wanna be friends?"
Click click. Was that so impossible? Was he so mad, suddenly disliked her so much again, that he didn't want to be in the same building? "Yes."
"Friends like before or after we had sex on the floor?"
Her thumb stopped. "Before."
"Not interested."
"Why?"
"Because I don't want to be your friend."
"Oh." She swallowed her disappointment. It might be for the best, but she suddenly didn't want what was for the best. She didn't want to hate Sam and have Sam hate her. What choice did she have? "Okay."
"I want to be your lover. I can't pretend I don't want more. I want to be with you, Autumn. I want to get you naked and throw your legs over my shoulders"
She dropped the pen.
"I want to leave a mark on the inside of your thigh. ~ Rachel Gibson
Autumn Doughton quotes by Rachel Gibson
What a simple thing death is, just as simple as the falling of an autumn leaf. ~ Vincent Van Gogh
Autumn Doughton quotes by Vincent Van Gogh
Autumn! The greatest show of all the times! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Autumn Doughton quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
When the days become longer and there is more sunshine, the grass becomes fresh and, consequently, we feel very happy. On the other hand, in autumn, one leaf falls down and another leaf falls down. The beautiful plants become as if dead and we do not feel very happy. Why? I think it is because deep down our human nature likes construction, and does not like destruction. Naturally, every action which is destructive is against human nature. Constructiveness is the human way. Therefore, I think that in terms of basic human feeling, violence is not good. Non-violence is the only way. ~ Dalai Lama
Autumn Doughton quotes by Dalai Lama
Sure, Manda knew that the tree wasn't actually dead. Mrs. Evans, her teacher, taught her that some trees lose their leaves in the wintertime making them look dead, when they were only sleeping.

Sleeping or not, the big tree was dead to Manda. ~ Julie B. Campbell
Autumn Doughton quotes by Julie B. Campbell
The gray-green stretch of sandy grass,Indefinitely desolate;A sea of lead, a sky of slate;Already autumn in the air, alas! One stark monotony of stone,The long hotel, acutely white,Against the after-sunset lightWithers gray-green, and takes the grass's tone. ~ Arthur Symons
Autumn Doughton quotes by Arthur Symons
To think that the affairs of this life always remain in the same state is a vain presumption; indeed they all seem to be perpetually changing and moving in a circular course. Spring is followed by summer, summer by autumn, and autumn by winter, which is again followed by spring, and so time continues its everlasting round. But the life of man is ever racing to its end, swifter than time itself, without hope of renewal, unless in the next that is limitless and infinite. ~ Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
Autumn Doughton quotes by Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
I am a leaf
Out of a thousand lines
&
There are no waiting eyes
At the foot of the time ~ Kristian Goldmund Aumann
Autumn Doughton quotes by Kristian Goldmund Aumann
Peer of gods he seemeth to me, the blissful
Man who sits and gazes at thee before him,
Close beside thee sits, and in silence hears thee
Silverly speaking,
Laughing love's low laughter. Oh this, this only
Stirs the troubled heart in my breast to tremble!
For should I but see thee a little moment,
Straight is my voice hushed;
Yea, my tongue is broken, and through and through me
'Neath the flesh impalpable fire runs tingling;
Nothing see mine eyes, and a noise of roaring
Waves in my ears sounds;
Sweat runs down in rivers, a tremor seizes
All my limbs, and paler than grass in autumn,
Caught by pains of menacing death, I falter,
Lost in the love trance. ~ Sappho
Autumn Doughton quotes by Sappho
Autumn brings the falling of leaves and cool days. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Autumn Doughton quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
The Prologue

When the autumn breeze blows and stirs up a sense of adventure, I find myself wishing that I could embark on a grand quest full of danger, a journey to an unknown world. A quest of epic proportions that ends in a glorious blaze of heroics before I return home to resume the life that I had left behind for a time. This is only the wishful musings of a normal girl bored with the way things are. Then again, it might not be.

My story begins much like any other, but don't be deceived! This story is nothing like any other you have ever read - or heard, as the case may be. At least, I don't think it is. But who am I to say such a thing? You must read it and decide for yourself.

So. Here it is. I hope you enjoy the ride - or the read, rather. ~ Annie Riley
Autumn Doughton quotes by Annie Riley
Now this was clearly one of the greatest improvements on the education system since time began and I was greatly looking forward to being enrolled but Aunt Penn said that I didn't have to do much of anything until autumn term, which didn't start until September, and by that time no one was going to school anyway due to the You Know What. ~ Meg Rosoff
Autumn Doughton quotes by Meg Rosoff
She was practically an invalid ever after I could remember her, but used what strength she had in lavish care upon me and my sister, who was three years younger. There was a touch of mysticism and poetry in her nature which made her love to gaze at the purple sunsets and watch the evening stars. Whatever was grand and beautiful in form and color attracted her. It seemed as though the rich green tints of the foliage and the blossoms of the flowers came for her in the springtime, and in the autumn it was for her that the mountain sides were struck with crimson and with gold. ~ Calvin Coolidge
Autumn Doughton quotes by Calvin Coolidge
Although leaves remained on the beeches and the sunshine was warm, there was a sense of growing emptiness over the wide space of the down. The flowers were sparser. Here and there a yellow tormentil showed in the grass, a late harebell or a few shreds of purple bloom on a brown, crisping tuft of self-heal. But most of the plants still to be seen were in seed. Along the edge of the wood a sheet of wild clematis showed like a patch of smoke, all its sweet-smelling flowers turned to old man's beard. The songs of the insects were fewer and intermittent. Great stretches of the long grass, once the teeming jungle of summer, were almost deserted, with only a hurrying beetle or a torpid spider left out of all the myriads of August. The gnats still danced in the bright air, but the swifts that had swooped for them were gone and instead of their screaming cries in the sky, the twittering of a robin sounded from the top of a spindle tree. The fields below the hill were all cleared. One had already been plowed and the polished edges of the furrows caught the light with a dull glint, conspicuous from the ridge above. The sky, too, was void, with a thin clarity like that of water. In July the still blue, thick as cream, had seemed close above the green trees, but now the blue was high and rare, the sun slipped sooner to the west and, once there, foretold a touch of frost, sinking slow and big and drowsy, crimson as the rose hips that covered the briar. As the wind freshened from the south, ~ Richard Adams
Autumn Doughton quotes by Richard Adams
When an atheist enjoys the cool breeze of a sunny autumn day as he writes his treatise saying God doesn't exist, the ultimate source of his pleasure remains God. God is the author of the universe itself - including the powers of rational thought the atheist misuses to argue against God. David ~ Randy Alcorn
Autumn Doughton quotes by Randy Alcorn
The last word went like a bullet to my heart. My arm lost all sensation of the hand that grasped it. I never moved and never spoke. The sharp autumn breeze that scattered the dead leaves at our feet, came as cold to me, on a sudden, as if my own mad hopes were dead leaves, too, whirled away by the wind like the rest. Hopes! Betrothed, or not betrothed, she was equally far from me. Would other men have remembered that in my place? Not if they loved her as I did. ~ Wilkie Collins
Autumn Doughton quotes by Wilkie Collins
I belong to clever words and bedtime stories
even a good riddle or two
I belong to the sound of music
and dance to my own rhythm
I belong to the sunlight on a chilly autumn day
when the world awaits a new beginning
I belong by the shore under a star-filled sky
with the ocean caressing my feet
I belong everywhere.
And anyway I please. ~ M.J. Abraham
Autumn Doughton quotes by M.J. Abraham
Autumn! The greatest show of all times! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Autumn Doughton quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
Look at the four-spaced year
That imitates four seasons of our lives;
First Spring, that delicate season, bright with flowers,
Quickening, yet shy, and like a milk-fed child,
Its way unsteady while the countryman
Delights in promise of another year.
Green meadows wake to bloom, frail shoots and grasses,
And then Spring turns to Summer's hardiness,
The boy to manhood. There's no time of year
Of greater richness, warmth, and love of living,
New strength untried. And after Summer, Autumn,
First flushes gone, the temperate season here
Midway between quick youth and growing age,
And grey hair glinting when the head turns toward us,
Then senile Winter, bald or with white hair,
Terror in palsy as he walks alone. ~ Ovid
Autumn Doughton quotes by Ovid
Autumn imagined the girl, with long dark hair in plaits and a red cape, running through the wood and stopping because she hears something: soft paws crushing damp moss, an animal breathing. She runs on. She's frightened. She knows what will happen is inevitable. All the while the wolf is keeping pace with her, watching her, its pink tongue lolling over its sharp, white teeth. Waiting for its chance. ~ Sanjida Kay
Autumn Doughton quotes by Sanjida Kay
It is autumn, mid-October, and the greens of our first encounter with this land have dressed up in fancy costume, orange, scarlet, yellow, to welcome us. It is almost too much to take in, all the beauty. ~ Robin Black
Autumn Doughton quotes by Robin Black
My mother was taught the ch'an concept of happiness, which was to find satisfaction in small things. i was taught to appreciate the fresh air in the morning, the colour of leaves turning red in autumn and the water's smoothness when i soaked my hands in the basin. ~ Anchee Min
Autumn Doughton quotes by Anchee Min
Autumn is full of leave-taking. ~ Mary Webb
Autumn Doughton quotes by Mary Webb
For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together. For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad. ~ Edwin Way Teale
Autumn Doughton quotes by Edwin Way Teale
What crannies of untouched perception can you explore? What autumn was it that the moon entered your life? When was it that you picked blueberries at their quintessential moment? How long did you wait for your first true bike? Who are your angels? What are you thinking of? Not thinking of? What are you looking at? Not looking at? ~ Natalie Goldberg
Autumn Doughton quotes by Natalie Goldberg
A human life has seasons much as the earth has seasons, each time with its own particular beauty and power. And gift. By focusing on springtime and summer, we have turned the natural process of life into a process of loss rather than a process of celebration and appreciation. Life is neither linear nor stagnant. It is movement from mystery to mystery. Just as a year includes autumn and winter, life includes death, not as an opposite but as an integral part of the way life is made. ~ Rachel Naomi Remen
Autumn Doughton quotes by Rachel Naomi Remen
The dinner-hour is the summer of the day: full of sunshine, I grant; but not like the mellow autumn of supper. ~ Herman Melville
Autumn Doughton quotes by Herman Melville
