Of the contributions made during the essayist period three call for notice: Weismann deserves mention for his useful work in asking for the proof that "acquired characters" or, to speak more precisely, parental experience can really be transmitted to the offspring. The ocurrence of progressive adaptation by transmission of effects of use had seemed so natural to Darwin and his contemporaries that no proof of the physiological reality of the henomenon was thought necessary. Weismann's challenge revealed the utter inadequacy of the evidence on which the beliefs were based. They are doubtless isolated observations which may be interpreted as favouring the belief in these transmissions, but such meagre indications as exist are by general consent admitted to be too slight to be of much assistance in the attempt to understand how the more complex adaptive mechanisms arose. ~ William Bateson
August Weismann quotes by William Bateson
We do not draw conclusions with our eyes, but with our reasoning powers, and if the whole of the rest of living nature proclaims with one accord from all sides the evolution of the world of organisms, we cannot assume that the process stopped short of Man. But it follows also that the factors which brought about the development of Man from his Simian ancestry must be the same as those which have brought about the whole of evolution. ~ August Weismann
August Weismann quotes by August Weismann
Evidently neither cats nor dogs, nor other animals that listen to human music, were constituted for the appreciation of it, for it is not of the slightest use to them in the struggle for existence. Moreover, they and their organs of hearing were much older than man and his music. Their power of appreciating music is therefore an uncontemplated side-faculty of a hearing apparatus which has become on other grounds what we find it to be. So it is, I believe, with man. He has not acquired his musical hearing as such, but has received a highly developed organ of hearing by a process of selection, because it was necessary to him in the selective process ; and this organ of hearing happens also to be adapted to listening to music. ~ August Weismann
August Weismann quotes by August Weismann
Every individual alive today, even the very highest, is to be derived in an unbroken line from the first and lowest forms. ~ August Weismann
August Weismann quotes by August Weismann
The world has been evolved, not created: it has arisen little by little from a small beginning, and has increased through the activity of the elemental forces embodied in itself, and so has rather grown than come into being at an almighty word. ~ August Weismann
August Weismann quotes by August Weismann
To leave a message is another image.

Amen
God ~ Petra Hermans
August Weismann quotes by Petra Hermans
The producers and I first talked about the Big Fish musical, right before we did the first test screening of the movie. I said, "I think there's a Broadway musical here." And really, from that day, we started figuring out how we would do it. ~ John August
August Weismann quotes by John August
August briefly tried that on for size. Wondered if he longed for summer because summer made it so much easier to breathe. ~ Catherine Ryan Hyde
August Weismann quotes by Catherine Ryan Hyde
August for the people and their favourite islands. Daily the steamers sidle up to meet The effusive welcome of the pier. ~ W. H. Auden
August Weismann quotes by W. H. Auden
He is the greatest,' " he finally continued, " 'whose strength carries up the most hearts by the attraction of his own.' Without further ado, this year I am very proud to award the Henry Ward Beecher medal to the student whose quiet strength has carried up the most hearts. "So will August Pullman please come up here to receive this award? ~ R.J. Palacio
August Weismann quotes by R.J. Palacio
I think that's the core of black aesthetics: the ability to improvise. That is what has enabled our [black people's] survival. ~ August Wilson
August Weismann quotes by August Wilson
And I wondered how it would feel to be in Heaven and not have my face matter anymore. Just like how it never, ever mattered to Daisy. ~ R.J. Palacio
August Weismann quotes by R.J. Palacio
We're not even supposed to have a break in August if we have not passed the appropriations bills. It's in the House rules. ~ Dan Webster
August Weismann quotes by Dan Webster
I've been sober for two-and-a-half years, My children are happy. In August, my wife and I will celebrate our fifteenth wedding anniversary. My band is back together with a sold-out tour. ~ Trey Anastasio
August Weismann quotes by Trey Anastasio
Thrown from the garden, she searches for true love. but she needs an heir. ~ Suzanne Stroh
August Weismann quotes by Suzanne Stroh
Justice, like liberty and coercion, is a concept which, for the sake of clarity, ought to be confined to the deliberate treatment of men by other men. ~ Friedrich August Von Hayek
August Weismann quotes by Friedrich August Von Hayek
I'm interested in creating a space through color contrasts, rather than by simple shadows of light and dark. ~ August Macke
August Weismann quotes by August Macke
The road is a strange place. Shuffling along, I looked up and you were there walking across the grass toward my truck on an August day. In retrospect, it seems inevitable - it could not have been any other way
a case of what I call the high probability of the improbable ~ Robert James Waller
August Weismann quotes by Robert James Waller
It hadn't occurred to me that my mother would die. Until she was dying, the thought had never entered my mind. She was monolithic and insurmountable, the keeper of my life. She would grow old and still work in the garden. This image was fixed in my mind, like one of the memories from her childhood that I made her explain so intricately that I remembered it as if it were mine. She would be old and beautiful like the black-and-white photo of Georgia O'Keeffe I'd once sent her. I held fast to this image for the first couple of weeks after we left the Mayo Clinic, and then, once she was admitted to the hospice wing of the hospital in Duluth, that image unfurled, gave way to the others, more modest and true. I imagined my mother in October; I wrote the scene in my mind. And then the one of my mother in August and another in May. Each day that passed, another month peeled away. ~ Cheryl Strayed
August Weismann quotes by Cheryl Strayed
I used to think in my Russian-novel days, that I would cherish a lover who managed through thick and thin, snow and sleet, to have a bunch of Parma violets on my breakfast tray each morning
also rain or shine, Christmas or August, and onward into complete Neverland. Later, I shifted my dream plan
a split of cold champagne one half hour before the tray! Violets, sparkling wine, and trays themselves were as nonexistent as the lover(s), of course, but once again, Why not? ~ Mary Francis Kennedy Fisher
August Weismann quotes by Mary Francis Kennedy Fisher
I really love fan art, which I get sent a lot of. I really, really get a lot of. I get a kick out of it. ~ J. August Richards
August Weismann quotes by J. August Richards
What happened, of course, was that I was writing a play set in the 1940's that was supposed to be somehow representative of black American life, and I didn't have any women in there. And I knew that wasn't going to work. ~ August Wilson
August Weismann quotes by August Wilson
I think we will have a boy baby and he will be born on the 20th of August. Everyone else has a girl baby and at times I don't believe I should mind having a little Phyllis Dawn but Dearest wants a boy and I do. ~ Dawn Powell
August Weismann quotes by Dawn Powell
I always used to watch 'The Daily Show,' and there were all these comedic geniuses there. I didn't know if I was going to be hired full time or not. At the beginning, I was sort of hired as a part time, on and off guy. When I first got hired - it was August 2006 - and I was working on and off, and they'd call me whenever. ~ Aasif Mandvi
August Weismann quotes by Aasif Mandvi
Woodstock happened in August 1969, long before the Internet and mobile phones made it possible to communicate instantly with anyone, anywhere. It was a time when we weren't able to witness world events or the horrors of war live on 24-hour news channels. ~ Richie Havens
August Weismann quotes by Richie Havens
Their crew for 'Arrow' is just one of the most wonderful crews that I've worked with. I know that actors say that all the time, and it sounds like trash coming out of my own mouth, but it's so true. ~ J. August Richards
August Weismann quotes by J. August Richards
I've talked to Bruce about it. He'll have kittens, and Hiro will have penguins, and August will completely throw a fit, but I've made up my mind. It's up to you ~ Lili St. Crow
August Weismann quotes by Lili St. Crow
Because I keep it real and reality is a ruthless bitch. Plus I wanna make money – you cool with that?" - Gable ~ J.M. August
August Weismann quotes by J.M. August
You should have held me tight. You should have grabbed me and held on. ~ August Wilson
August Weismann quotes by August Wilson
That smell of freshly cut grass makes me think of Friday night football in high school. The smell of popcorn and cigar smoke reminds me of the stadium. The cutting of the grass reminds me of the August practice. ~ Garth Brooks
August Weismann quotes by Garth Brooks
But I have sinuous shells of pearly hue Within, and they that lustre have imbibed In the sun's palace-porch, where when unyoked chariot-wheel stands midway in the wave: Shake one, and it awakens; then apply Its polisht lips to your attentive ear, And it remembers its august abodes, And murmurs as the ocean murmurs there. ~ Walter Savage Landor
August Weismann quotes by Walter Savage Landor
American banks may have been unable to supply adequate loans, but the Rothschild consortium in Britain was both able and willing. It was during this time that the Rothschilds were consolidating their new industrial holdings in the United States through their agent, August Belmont. Derek Wilson tells us: "They owned or had major shareholdings in Central American ironworks, North American canal construction companies, and a multiplicity of other concerns. They became the major importers of bullion from the newly discovered goldfields". ~ G. Edward Griffin
August Weismann quotes by G. Edward Griffin
I believe in the American theatre. I believe in its power to inform about the human condition, its power to heal ... its power to uncover the truths we wrestle from uncertain and sometimes unyielding realities. ~ August Wilson
August Weismann quotes by August Wilson
It was August 5th in 1971. The vortex of summer. Joshua looked unwaveringly at Meredith Hurley. She looked back with kindness, and smiled softly as she looked back, feeling a connection that was invisible to the naked eye, yet magnetic and manifested in both of their hearts. ~ Keira D. Skye
August Weismann quotes by Keira D. Skye
Sleep, honey. We can play later." And if she hadn't seen it with her own tired eyes, she never would've believed it. Like the snuffing of a candle, he was asleep in seconds. Burning red hot one moment, a ghost of dissipating smoke the next.

Hope inventoried his unguarded face, softer and so much younger in sleep, his enviably long lashes hiding the ever present jadedness. Fatigue pulled at her and she fought it, forcing her eyes open when they drifted shut.

"I'm not gonna fall in love with you, Beck. I'm gonna leave you in August."

She whispered the vow to a man in deep sleep. To a room cast in shadow. To a house steeped in tradition. To a woman mired in denial.

Sleep took her quickly, quicker than she wanted, and with it came the mocking sound of her surely spoken promise, echoing in her dreams like a school yard taunt. ~ Jodi Watters
August Weismann quotes by Jodi Watters
January?
The month is dumb.
It is fraudulent.
It does not cleanse itself.
The hens lay blood-stained eggs.
Do not lend your bread to anyone
lest it nevermore rise.
Do not eat lentils or your hair will fall out.

Do not rely on February
except when your cat has kittens,
throbbing into the snow.
Do not use knives and forks
unless there is a thaw,
like the yawn of a baby.
The sun in this month
begets a headache
like an angel slapping you in the face.

Earthquakes mean March.
The dragon will move,
and the earth will open like a wound.
There will be great rain or snow
so save some coal for your uncle.
The sun of this month cures all.
Therefore, old women say:
Let the sun of March shine on my daughter,
but let the sun of February shine on my daughter-in-law.
However, if you go to a party
dressed as the anti-Christ
you will be frozen to death by morning.

During the rainstorms of April
the oyster rises from the sea
and opens its shell -
rain enters it -
when it sinks the raindrops
become the pearl.
So take a picnic,
open your body,
and give birth to pearls.

June and July?
These are the months
we call Boiling Water.
There is sweat on the cat but the grape
marries herself to the sun.

Hesitate in August.
Be shy.
Let your toes tremble ~ Anne Sexton THE SERMON OF THE TWELVE ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
August Weismann quotes by Anne Sexton THE SERMON OF THE TWELVE ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I feel like my life experience is that of an outsider. Let me explain: my parents are from Panama, and they moved to the United States the year after I was born. They moved into an all-white neighborhood, where the previous black family had a cross burned on their lawn. ~ J. August Richards
August Weismann quotes by J. August Richards
Competition means decentralized planning by many separate persons. ~ Friedrich August Von Hayek
August Weismann quotes by Friedrich August Von Hayek
I absolutely love working with David Boreanaz, and Charisma Carpenter I completely adore - she teaches me to dance. ~ J. August Richards
August Weismann quotes by J. August Richards
Marvel makes you feel like 'Iron Man' will show up at your front door to kill you if you say the wrong thing. ~ J. August Richards
August Weismann quotes by J. August Richards
My first app was released in July or August of 2008. It was a 'fingermill' - a treadmill for your fingers. My level of programming was quite basic to begin with, so it was more gimmicky to start with. Day one it was up there, I had 79 pounds worth of revenue. ~ Nick D'Aloisio
August Weismann quotes by Nick D'Aloisio
Further in Summer than the Birds Pathetic from the Grass A minor Nation celebrates Its unobtrusive Mass. No Ordinance be seen So gradual the Grace A pensive Custom it becomes Enlarging Loneliness. Antiquest felt at Noon When August burning low Arise this spectral Canticle Repose to typify Remit as yet no Grace No Furrow on the Glow Yet a Druidic Difference Enhances Nature now. ~ Emily Dickinson
August Weismann quotes by Emily Dickinson
August used to be a sad month for me. As the days went on, the thought of school starting weighed heavily upon my young frame. That, coupled with the oppressive heat and humidity of my native Washington, D.C., only seemed to heighten the misery. ~ Henry Rollins
August Weismann quotes by Henry Rollins
Pure photography allows us to create portraits which render their subjects with absolute truth, truth both physical and psychological. That is the principal which provided my starting point, once I had said to myself that if we can create portraits of subjects that are true, we thereby in effect create a mirror of the times in which those subjects live. ~ August Sander
August Weismann quotes by August Sander
A general flat minimum-wage law for all industry is permissible, but I do not think that it is a particularly wise method of achieving the end. I know much better methods of providing a minimum for everybody. But once you turn from laying down a general minimum for all industry to decreeing particular and different minimum for different industries, then, of course, you make the price mechanism inoperative, because it is no longer the price mechanism which will guide people between industries and trades. ~ Friedrich August Von Hayek
August Weismann quotes by Friedrich August Von Hayek
It is a historical error for those who were not there to just refer to August 28th as 'I Have a Dream' speech day. That is a real disservice to those who were there. It was a sad day. It was not a celebration environment. ~ Jesse Jackson
August Weismann quotes by Jesse Jackson
Unlike proportionality, progression provides no principle which tells us what the relative burden of different persons ought to be the argument based on the presumed justice of progression provides no limitation, as has often been admitted by its supporters, before all incomes above a certain figure are confiscated, and those below left untaxed. ~ Friedrich August Von Hayek
August Weismann quotes by Friedrich August Von Hayek
Human reason can neither predict nor deliberately shape its own future. Its advances consist in finding out where it has been wrong. ~ Friedrich August Von Hayek
August Weismann quotes by Friedrich August Von Hayek
In August most of Europe goes on holiday. ~ Tony Visconti
August Weismann quotes by Tony Visconti
Why do Britons keep stabbing each other in August? Why do seaside hotels burn down in August? Why do children disappear in August, examinations get easier and Heathrow become the world's worst airport? The answer lies not in reality but in appearance. News editors abhor a vacuum. Half an hour of airtime and 10 pages of news must be filled each day, whatever the weather. ~ Simon Jenkins
August Weismann quotes by Simon Jenkins
There were nights for instance, especially in August, where the view of the full moon from the top of the Acropolis hill or from a high terrace could steal your breath away. The moon would slide over the clouds like a seducing princess dressed in her finest silvery silk. And the sky would be full of stars that trembled feebly, like servants that bowed before her. During those nights under the light of the August full moon, the city of Athens would become an enchanted kingdom that slept lazily under the sweet light of its ethereal mistress. ~ Effrosyni Moschoudi
August Weismann quotes by Effrosyni Moschoudi
I prefer silence. Then you can hear thoughts and see into the past.
In silence you can't hide anything ... as you can in words. ~ August Strindberg
August Weismann quotes by August Strindberg
But then a peculiar thing happened. I became extraordinarily affected by the summer afternoons in the laboratory. The August sunlight came streaming in the great dusty fanlights and lay in yellow bars across the room. The old building ticked and creaked in the heat. Outside we could hear the cries of summer students playing touch football. In the course of an afternoon the yellow sunlight moved across old group pictures of the biology faculty. I became bewitched by the presence of the building; for minutes at a stretch I sat on the floor and watched the motes rise and fall in the sunlight. I called Harry's attention to the presence but he shrugged and went on with his work. He was absolutely unaffected by the singularities of time and place. His abode was anywhere. It was all the same to him whether he catheterized a pig at four o'clock in the afternoon in New Orleans or at midnight in Transylvania. He was actually like one of those scientists in the movies who don't care about anything but the problem in their heads - now here is a fellow who does have a "flair for research" and will be heard from. Yet I do not envy him. I would not change places with him if he discovered the cause and cure of cancer. For he is no more aware of the mystery which surrounds him than a fish is aware of the water it swims in. He could do research for a thousand years and never have an inkling of it. ~ Walker Percy
