Oftentimes in reality, the genius is in the position of the antihero. Neither the good guys nor the bad guys really trust him because his truth is universal. ~ Criss Jami
Anti Hero quotes by Criss Jami
Even the Westerns that I grew up with, the Sergio Leone's and all that, there was always a sort of anti-hero, a guy reluctant to shame even, to pick up the gun again because he wants to help other people, and he does, he uses his skills for that. ~ Antoine Fuqua
Anti Hero quotes by Antoine Fuqua
I started out a human being. But pretty much had all the humanity wrung out of me after passing the Bar and practicing law for ten years. Not sure what I am now. ~ Jeffrey Rasley
Anti Hero quotes by Jeffrey Rasley
The great thing about Burgess's work is the dichotomy of making the hero or anti-hero an immoral man. And that's what makes it interesting. Because, you know, you are sucked into kind of like this guy. ~ Malcolm McDowell
Anti Hero quotes by Malcolm McDowell
I know you don't want to see me because I'm "dangerous," "deranged," and "possibly the worst being ever created by Zeus - or anyone." But underneath this chiseled, bronzed exterior beats a heart of gold, probably. You'll never know the truth unless you come out of hiding and take another peek under my hood. ~ Gena Showalter
Anti Hero quotes by Gena Showalter
The anti-hero or hero usually has a journey or quest so they are interesting as you find out what's going to happen, what they are looking for. What are they trying to do? Sometimes what they do is heroic or comes with a price or sacrifice or maybe the way they do things isn't so great and that's when they become anti-heroes. But the journey of an anti-hero combined with a good story done well is always worthwhile. ~ Keanu Reeves
Anti Hero quotes by Keanu Reeves
I'm always attracted to anti-hero roles. ~ Peter Dinklage
Anti Hero quotes by Peter Dinklage
A lot of characters now on TV have moved into being anti-heroes, but I wanted to be the hero. ~ Kieran Bew
Anti Hero quotes by Kieran Bew
I don't believe in anti-heroes. Duke Wayne played a mean guy but never an anti-hero. ~ Joel McCrea
Anti Hero quotes by Joel McCrea
Perhaps some of the appeal of the dangerous-but-yummy paranormal anti-hero lies in his scorn for societal expectations. Yes, women have come a long way, but there are still some cultural stigmas more associated with women than men. ~ Jeaniene Frost
Anti Hero quotes by Jeaniene Frost
I'm often painted as the bad guy, and the artistic part of me wants to hand out the brush. ~ Criss Jami
Anti Hero quotes by Criss Jami
We lost faith in authority in the '50s, up to a point, and we spawned a lot of anti-heroes in movies, which were refreshing and open. But at this point, with the distrust that's there and the disillusionment with leadership that is so acute, we need some kind of a focus on taking the irony out and taking the anti-hero element away. ~ Brendan Gleeson
Anti Hero quotes by Brendan Gleeson
The Punisher: If there are no consequences to your mistakes...there are no reason not to make them... ~ Fred Van Lente
Anti Hero quotes by Fred Van Lente
I don't think the Hulk is a superhero. He's the first Marvel character who is a tragic monster. Really an anti-hero. ~ Ang Lee
Anti Hero quotes by Ang Lee
To spare Cloyce's victims further indignities to their memory, I must be a scourge. To prevent others from perhaps being infected by Cloyce's depravity by watching him at work, I must be a scourge. To prevent time management technology from falling into the hands of authorities who, if not already corrupt, would be corrupted by it, I must be a scourge.
Scourges aren't heroes.
I had never imagined myself to be a hero, but never had I imagined I would be this.
Scourges transgress against social and sacred order.
A scourge went into darker territory than that. A scourge was not compelled to kill by mental imbalance or emotional confusion or selfish desire. A scourge made a carefully reasoned decision to kill in numbers that exceeded what was absolutely necessary to ensure self-preservation and the defense of the innocent. Even if he killed for the right reason, he was in rebellion against social order and commanding authority.
Who scourges will be scourged. In fulfilling this dark role in Roseland, I would bring about my own death.
Yet I knew I would not retreat from my decision. ~ Dean Koontz
Anti Hero quotes by Dean Koontz
If life is a movie most people would consider themselves the star of their own feature. Guys might imagine they're living some action adventure epic. Chicks maybe are in a rose-colored fantasy romance. And homosexuals are living la vida loca in a fabulous musical. Still others may take the indie approach and think of themselves as an anti-hero in a coming of age flick. Or a retro badass in an exploitation B movie. Or the cable man in a very steamy adult picture. Some people's lives are experimental student art films that don't make any sense. Some are screwball comedies. Others resemble a documentary, all serious and educational. A few lives achieve blockbuster status and are hailed as a tribute to the human spirit. Some gain a small following and enjoy cult status. And some never got off the ground due to insufficient funding. I don't know what my life is but I do know that I'm constantly squabbling with the director over creative control, throwing prima donna tantrums and pouting in my personal trailor when things don't go my way.

Much of our lives is spent on marketing. Make-up, exercise, dieting, clothes, hair, money, charm, attitude, the strut, the pose, the Blue Steel look. We're like walking billboards advertising ourselves. A sneak peek of upcoming attractions. Meanwhile our actual production is in disarray--we're over budget, doing poorly at private test screenings and focus groups, creatively stagnant, morale low. So we're endlessly tinkering, touching u ~ Tatsuya Ishida
Anti Hero quotes by Tatsuya Ishida
We're the villains you root for in the story. ~ Melissa De La Cruz
Anti Hero quotes by Melissa De La Cruz
The scenario where the sprawling anti-hero gets his comeuppance and the champion walks off into the sunset with his arm around the prize, usually a woman, is a pleasing one. This media personification of what a hero is all about used to be the common norm. Examining past events can confirm this convoluted outlook that sees the baddie being portrayed as some sort of evil manifestation sent to cause havoc by any means possible. ~ Stephen Richards
Anti Hero quotes by Stephen Richards
A novel requires a hero, and here there's a deliberate collection of all the traits for an anti-hero ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Anti Hero quotes by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
I steal from the rich to give to myself. ~ Robert Thier
Anti Hero quotes by Robert Thier
I don't know why I'm drawn to anti-heroes, but I certainly am. ~ Jason Reitman
Anti Hero quotes by Jason Reitman
We've had 20 years of mass murders throughout which I have repeatedly told CNN and our other media, if you don't want to propagate more mass murders, don't start the story with sirens blaring. Don't have photographs of the killer. Don't make this 24/7 coverage. Do everything you can not to make the body count the lead story, not to make the killer some kind of anti-hero. Do localize the story to the affected community and make it as boring as possible in every other market. Because every time we have intense saturation coverage of a mass murder, we expect to see one or two more within a week. ~ Park Dietz
Anti Hero quotes by Park Dietz
I think it's doubly important, now that we see so many people failing. When the norm is an anti-hero, there's a serious loss when you cannot portray a decent person on screen without it becoming slightly sentimental or feeling like it's unrealistic. ~ Brendan Gleeson
Anti Hero quotes by Brendan Gleeson
Even now, so many years later, all this is somehow a very evil memory. I have many evil memories now, but ... hadn't I better end my "Notes" here? I believe I made a mistake in beginning to write them, anyway I have felt ashamed all the time I've been writing this story; so it's hardly literature so much as a corrective punishment. Why, to tell long stories, showing how I have spoiled my life through morally rotting in my corner, through lack of fitting environment, through divorce from real life, and rankling spite in my underground world, would certainly not be interesting; a novel needs a hero, and all the traits for an anti-hero are expressly gathered together here, and what matters most, it all produces an unpleasant impression, for we are all divorced from life, we are all cripples, every one of us, more or less. We are so divorced from it that we feel at once a sort of loathing for real life, and so cannot bear to be reminded of it. Why, we have come almost to looking upon real life as an effort, almost as hard work, and we are all privately agreed that it is better in books. And why do we fuss and fume sometimes? Why are we perverse and ask for something else? We don't know what ourselves. It would be the worse for us if our petulant prayers were answered. Come, try, give any one of us, for instance, a little more independence, untie our hands, widen the spheres of our activity, relax the control and we ... yes, I assure you ... we should be begging to be under contro ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Anti Hero quotes by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Riley, you're the Devil, and I'd gladly sell you my soul, if you didn't already own it..." - Luc Wade ~ Bec McMaster
Anti Hero quotes by Bec McMaster
While gently pushing her towards the dressing room, Lazarus ventured, "Can I ask you something kind of personal?"

Pulling her shirt over her head behind the curtain, and holding her hand out for the corset, she replied, "Anything for you, Laz."

"How are you still friends with him?"

"Can you hook this thing?" Holding the corset on her stomach, Lazarus peeked through the curtain, fingers deftly snapping the twenty hook-and-eye latches. "He saved my life. There are a million reasons to hate him, but there are a million and one reasons to forgive him for his faults."

Twisting to look in the mirror, adjusting her breasts in the tight silk, she continued, "He'll say the worst thing at the worst possible time, except every once in awhile, he says the one most perfect thing that just makes you want to cry from happiness. He knows the exact way you need to be touched at any moment, in any mood, like he's fucking telepathic. He'll make you want to scream when he ignores you, but then you find out he knows your favorite color, your favorite meal, what movie makes you cry and he can list every little thing in the entire world that you hate. And mostly? Well," Turning to face Lazarus and strike a pose, "I just can't fucking stop. ~ Shannon Noelle Long
Anti Hero quotes by Shannon Noelle Long
Why didn't you come to me last night?" she whispered.
The question took him by surprise and he wasn't prepared to provide her with an answer while he was caught by the sapphire of her eyes.
She lifted a finger to his face, and every muscle in him relaxed as she traced it over his cheek. It was as though his body was reminded of when she had healed him - that perfect moment when her eyes came back to him and after he had shared the memory of his weakest moment.
"It's not enough," she mumbled. "The time that you spend with me isn't enough, Malloron. I feel…" Her palm pressed against his cheek and Malloron didn't need to wait for her to continue, he could feel it in the bond. He simply drew her into his arms.
The moment their bodies touched, the bond trembled inside his chest, stirring deep within him, a strange hope blooming. He pulled her against him and began to purr for her, his deep satisfaction of touching and holding her saturating every single vibration that rocked through his chest. ~ Zoey Ellis
Anti Hero quotes by Zoey Ellis
Outcasts, callused from being in exile for too long, learn to thrive on being the hated; the attention and infamy of our actions fuel us to become antiheroes. Too often do we forget: we risk self-destruction if we fail to follow what we know is right; our talents too often become misplaced, misdirected, misguided from what could have been something wonderful. ~ Mike Norton
Anti Hero quotes by Mike Norton
Look, we're in the time of the anti-hero. ~ Dean Norris
Anti Hero quotes by Dean Norris
An anti-hero is just a villain you spend a lot of time with. ~ Matthew Catania
Anti Hero quotes by Matthew Catania
I don't play the role of a villain, really, but I like playing anti-hero kind of roles. I like characters where there's conflict, drama, and more personal investment than just being heroes. ~ Randeep Hooda
Anti Hero quotes by Randeep Hooda
Comic book fans have loved Wolverine, and all the 'X-Men' characters, for more than the action. I think that's what set it apart from many of the other comic books. In the case of Wolverine, when he appeared, he was a revolution really. He was the first anti-hero. ~ Hugh Jackman
Anti Hero quotes by Hugh Jackman
Lou Reed was a hero because he was an anti-hero. ~ Tom Stoppard
Anti Hero quotes by Tom Stoppard
A grim expression came over Syah's face. "The colt you speak of lost its mother during a storm. If this stallion was that colt, it is not just wild, it is insane. That horse will break your bones."
"And that will be a worthy end, a prince struck down by such a noble steed."
Fasime pushed himself off the support of the fence, but Oman grabbed his arm.
"It's not worth it, Brother."
"I can tame him."
"What will we tell Mother and Father if he kills you?" Oman questioned.
"Tell them I gave my life with pride. Do not punish him if he kills me. Release him back into the wild, and my spirit will ride him into the mist. ~ D.M. Raver
Anti Hero quotes by D.M. Raver
Don't kid yourself. Keep the baby - I have no other advice for you. Children are the best thing in the world. ~ Elvira Baryakina
Anti Hero quotes by Elvira Baryakina
Heroes didn't leap tall buildings or stop bullets with an outstretched hand; they didn't wear boots and capes. They bled, and they bruised, and their superpowers were as simple as listening, or loving. Heroes were ordinary people who knew that even if their own lives were impossibly knotted, they could untangle someone else's. And maybe that one act could lead someone to rescue you right back. ~ Jodi Picoult
Anti Hero quotes by Jodi Picoult
Love is not nonsense. It is everything. For without love what is a man? Just an empty shell. – Sir Lindsay Crawford (fellow knight/friend of hero, Troye de Valois) ~ Catherine March
Anti Hero quotes by Catherine March
Love is the most powerful motivator in the world. It spurs mortals to greatness. Their noblest and bravest acts are done for love. ~ Rick Riordan
Anti Hero quotes by Rick Riordan
Whereas Micah was the leader and Henri was the professor, Jacques was the class clown. Mischievous and full of life, he was always playing pranks yet narrowly escaping getting caught by teachers and other authorities. And though he was no more Jewish than Henri, he, too, was very fond of the Kahn family and their Jewish friends. He abhorred the Nazi goose-steppers and the ugly anti-Semitism of the times. In Avi's and Jacob's eyes, these three young men were ideal recruits for the Resistance. They proved to be fast studies, hard workers, and exceedingly brave. ~ Joel C. Rosenberg
Anti Hero quotes by Joel C. Rosenberg
Lives of great men all remind us greatness takes no easy way. ~ Yip Harburg
Anti Hero quotes by Yip Harburg
Peace is the virtue of civilization. War is its crime. ~ Victor Hugo
Anti Hero quotes by Victor Hugo
I've never been a great enthusiast about how I look and I am very ... when I was young I had a real anti-talent for inventing myself as unappealing - craven and unremarkable. ~ Bill Nighy
Anti Hero quotes by Bill Nighy
Don't be a hero, young man. There's no percentage in it. ~ Raymond Chandler
Anti Hero quotes by Raymond Chandler
Women worry too much about how they smell or taste. I assure you, I love to taste a woman's primal essence on my tongue." Something melted inside her. He liked it? "Really? You're not just being polite, are you, Sir?" "No, kitten, when it comes to sex, I don't have a polite bone in my body. ~ Kallypso Masters
Anti Hero quotes by Kallypso Masters
There are indeed 'values' in the Harry Potter series, but they're confused with anti-values. Potterworld is a scrambled moral universe. There are Christian symbols in the series, but the author misappropriates them, mutates them, and integrates them into a supposedly larger and broader system where evil symbols are dominant. ~ Michael O'Brien
Anti Hero quotes by Michael O'Brien
The first casualty when war comes is truth. ~ Hiram Johnson
Anti Hero quotes by Hiram Johnson
All of my films are based on personal experiences and beliefs. Many of my heroes are my spokespeople - and some are not! ~ Michel Ocelot
Anti Hero quotes by Michel Ocelot
We're living in an acquisitive capitalist society that is fundamentally anti-family and fundamentally uncomfortable with just enjoying being human. We'd rather shop than live, acquire than love and stare into a screen than hold each other. ~ Frank Schaeffer
Anti Hero quotes by Frank Schaeffer
This idea that Canada's racial injustices are not as bad as they could be, this notion of Slavery Lite, of Racism Lite, of what my friend calls the "toy version of racism" is a very Canadian way of saying: remember what we could do to you if we wanted to. Passive-aggressive racism is central to Canada's national mythology and identity. ~ Desmond Cole
Anti Hero quotes by Desmond Cole
Yes. I think the anti-Wal-Mart is Costco, which pays much better and has much better health benefits and which is profitable and offers low prices. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Anti Hero quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
The ruinous deeds of the ravaging foe

(Beowulf)

The best-known long text in Old English is the epic poem Beowulf. Beowulf himself is a classic hero, who comes from afar. He has defeated the mortal enemy of the area - the monster Grendel - and has thus made the territory safe for its people. The people and the setting are both Germanic. The poem recalls a shared heroic past, somewhere in the general consciousness of the audience who would hear it.
It starts with a mention of 'olden days', looking back, as many stories do, to an indefinite past ('once upon a time'), in which fact blends with fiction to make the tale. But the hero is a mortal man, and images of foreboding and doom prepare the way for a tragic outcome. He will be betrayed, and civil war will follow. Contrasts between splendour and destruction, success and failure, honour and betrayal, emerge in a story which contains a great many of the elements of future literature. Power, and the battles to achieve and hold on to power, are a main theme of literature in every culture - as is the theme of transience and mortality.
................
Beowulf can be read in many ways: as myth; as territorial history of the Baltic kingdoms in which it is set; as forward-looking reassurance. Questions of history, time and humanity are at the heart of it: it moves between past, present, and hope for the future, and shows its origins in oral tradition. It is full of human speech and sonorous images, ~ Ronald Carter
Anti Hero quotes by Ronald Carter
Julian Assange is certainly no hero. The man behind WikiLeaks issued threats as if he were Dr. No bent on ending civilization as we know it. We will find him, lock him up, and throw away the key. But give the man credit; for a week the truth was laid bare. ~ Martin Cruz Smith
Anti Hero quotes by Martin Cruz Smith
If we think of the novel and the epic ... The difference lies in the fact that the important thing about the epic is a hero
a man who is a pattern for all men. While, as Mencken pointed out, the essence of most novels lies in the breaking down of a man, in the degeneration of character. ~ Jorge Luis Borges
Anti Hero quotes by Jorge Luis Borges
He promptly forgot all about being the hero of a coward's nightmare, ~ Don Carpenter
Anti Hero quotes by Don Carpenter
I didn't ask to be a hero, but I guess I have become one in the Christian community. So I accept it. But if I'm wrong about this, I guess I'll become a bum. ~ Hal Lindsey
Anti Hero quotes by Hal Lindsey
Bree crossed her arms over her protruding belly. "I'm fine. No one has shot at me in the last twenty four hours, and my family is talking to me again. Things are looking up."
He grimaced at the mention of her family. "How fortunate for you."
Bree narrowed her eyes at him, picking up on the derogatory tone. "Well, you should know all about the importance of family. You'd do anything for yours, right? Bernardo says jump, you ask 'how high?' "
Alessandro felt a sick twist of guilt in his chest, "Well, congratulations, Brianna. You've worked very hard for the title of O'Reiley doormat. I hope it's all you've ever wanted. I hope you're happy."
"Blissfully," Bree shot back and turned on her heel, leaving him there filled with anger and regret. ~ E. Jamie
Anti Hero quotes by E. Jamie
I'm an anti-industrial kind of guy. ~ Robert M. Parker, Jr.
Anti Hero quotes by Robert M. Parker, Jr.
Whereas, to preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them; nor does it follow from this, that all promiscuously must go into actual service on every occasion. The mind that aims at a select militia, must be influenced by a truly anti-republican principle; and when we see many men disposed to practice upon it, whenever they can prevail, no wonder true republicans are for carefully guarding against it. ~ Richard Henry Lee
Anti Hero quotes by Richard Henry Lee
But there were some things I believed in. Some things I had faith in. And faith isn't about perfect attendance to services, or how much money you put on the little plate. It isn't about going skyclad to the Holy Rites, or meditating each day upon the divine.
Faith is about what you do. It's about aspiring to be better and nobler and kinder than you are. It's about making sacrifices for the good of others - even when there's not going to be anyone telling you what a hero you are. ~ Jim Butcher
Anti Hero quotes by Jim Butcher
When he pulled away, he smiled kindly at me. I felt so good, I'll admit I teared up a little. I guess until that moment I hadn't allowed myself to realize just how terrified I had been the last few days.
"Dad-"
"Shhh," he said. "No hero is above fear, Percy. And you have risen above every hero. Not even Hercules- ~ Rick Riordan
Anti Hero quotes by Rick Riordan
So what are you supposed to do with it?"
He eyed her incredulously. "For real? It's called a butt plug. What do you think you're supposed to do with it?"
She scratched her nose and nodded, trying not to let the apprehension show. "Okay. I'll do it. But if it hurts, just let me know and I'll take it out, stat. Don't be a hero."
He gaped at her and shook his head. "Aw, no. Sweetie. That's not for me. ~ Christine Bell
Anti Hero quotes by Christine Bell
Twenty thousand troops drawn from several countries, including Japan, marched to Beijing to relieve the siege and loot the city. Among the British contingent was a north Indian soldier, Gadhadar Singh, who felt sympathetic to the anti-Western cause of the Boxers even though he believed that their bad tactics had 'blanketed their entire country and polity in dust.' His first sight of China was the landscape near Beijing, of famished Chinese with skeletal bodies in abandoned or destroyed villages, over whose broken buildings flew the flags of China's joint despoilers- France, Russia and Japan. River waters had become a 'cocktail of blood, flesh, bones and fat.' Singh particularly blamed the Russian and French soldiers for the mass killings, arson and rape inflicted on the Chinese. Some of the soldiers tortured their victims purely for fun. 'All these sportsmen,' Singh noted, 'belonged to what where called "civilized nations". ~ Pankaj Mishra
Anti Hero quotes by Pankaj Mishra
You carry the hopes of humanity into the realm of the eternal. Monsters never die. They are reborn from the chaos and barbarism that is always bubbling underneath civilization, the very stuff that makes Kronos stronger. They must be defeated again and again, kept at bay. Heroes embody that struggle. You fight the battles humanity must win, every generation, in order to stay human. ~ Rick Riordan
Anti Hero quotes by Rick Riordan
Charms and oaths and guardian spirits were all the product of a need for something to believe in because people didn't believe in themselves, a need to let problems resolve on their own rather than confront them. People were predominantly fearful of disruption, even of the things they found overbearing, even as they attempted to wish them away. It was why they invented heroes. It was why the world suffered through long periods of stagnation between innovations. Because rather than change the things that needed change, people preferred to cower and wait until a hero arrived to do it for them. Assuming by that point it was not already too late. ~ Sean DeLauder
Anti Hero quotes by Sean DeLauder
O beautiful for spacious skies, ... O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine, Til all success be nobleness And every gain divine! ~ Katharine Lee Bates
Anti Hero quotes by Katharine Lee Bates
The point is, not how long you live, but how nobly you live. ~ Seneca The Younger
Anti Hero quotes by Seneca The Younger
The Byronic hero, incapable of love, or capable only of an impossible love, suffers endlessly. He is solitary, languid, his condition exhausts him. If he wants to feel alive, it must be in the terrible exaltation of a brief and destructive action. ~ Albert Camus
Anti Hero quotes by Albert Camus
