To pluck a flower means to take possession of it, and it also means to kill it. ~ Anthony Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Bloom
...one of our great spiritual guides, Theophan the Recluse, says: 'The awareness of God shall be with you as clearly as a toothache. ~ Anthony Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Bloom
In the life of Moses, in Hebrew folklore, there is a remarkable passage. Moses finds a shepherd in the desert. He spends the day with the shepherd and helps him milk his ewes, and at the end of the day he sees that the shepherd puts the best milk he has in a wooden bowl, which he places on a flat stone some distance away. So Moses asks him what it is for, and the shepherd replies 'This is God's milk.' Moses is puzzled and asks him what he means. The shepherd says 'I always take the best milk I possess, and I bring it as on offering to God.' Moses, who is far more sophisticated than the shepherd with his naive faith, asks, 'And does God drink it?' 'Yes,' replies the shepherd, 'He does.' Then Moses feels compelled to enlighten the poor shepherd and he explains that God, being pure spirit, does not drink milk. Yet the shepherd is sure that He does, and so they have a short argument, which ends with Moses telling the shepherd to hide behind the bushes to find out whether in fact God does come to drink the milk. Moses then goes out to pray in the desert. The shepherd hides, the night comes, and in the moonlight the shepherd sees a little fox that comes trotting from the desert, looks right, looks left and heads straight towards the milk, which he laps up, and disappears into the desert again. The next morning Moses finds the shepherd quite depressed and downcast. 'What's the matter?' he asks. The shepherd says 'You were right, God is pure spirit, and He doesn't want my milk.' Theophan the Recluse said, 'Most people are like a shaving of wood which is curled round its central emptiness. ~ Anthony Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Bloom
(Quoted in Dennis Okholm's Monk Habits for Everyday People) Settle down in your room at a moment when you have nothing else to do. Say "I am now with myself," and just sit with yourself. After an amazingly short time you will most likely feel bored. This teaches us one very useful thing. It gives us insight into the fact that if after ten minutes of being alone with ourselves we feel like that, it is no wonder that others should feel equally bored! Why is this so? It is so because we have so little to offer to our own selves as food for thought, for emotion and for life. If you watch your life carefully you will discover quite soon that we hardly ever live from within outwards; instead we respond to incitement, to excitement. In other words, we live by reflection, by reaction... We are completely empty, we do not act from within ourselves but accept as our life a life which is actually fed in from the outside; we are used to things happening which compel us to do other things. How seldom can we live simply by means of the depth and the richness we assume that there is within ourselves. ~ Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom) Of Sourozh
Anthony Bloom quotes by Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom) Of Sourozh
The realm of God is dangerous. You must enter into it and not just seek information about it ~ Archbishop Anthony Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Archbishop Anthony Bloom
Then at a certain moment they lose heart, and the storm that was outside comes inside -- the storm is within them too. Anguish, death no longer simply circle round, they come inside. And then they turn to Christ and do what we very often do with God: we look at God in time of stress and tragedy, and we are indignant that He is so peaceful. The story in the Gospel underlines it by saying that Christ was sleeping with His head on a pillow- the final insult. They are dying and He is comfortable. This is exactly what we feel about God so often. How dare He be blissful, how dare He be so comfortable when I am in trouble? And the disciples do exactly what we do so very often. Instead of coming to God and saying 'You are peace, you are the Lord, say a word and my servant will be healed, say a word and things will come right', they shake Him out of His sleep and say 'Don't you care that we are perishing?' In other words, 'If you can do nothing, at least don't sleep. If you can do nothing better, then at least die in anguish with us.' Christ reacts, He gets up and says 'Men of little faith!' and brushing them aside, He turns towards the storm and, projecting His inner stillness, His harmony and peace on the storm He says 'Be still, be quiet' and everything is quiet again. ~ Anthony Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Bloom
As long as we ourselves are real, as long as we are truly ourselves, God can be present and can do something with us. But the moment we try to be what we are not, there is nothing left to say or have; we become a fictitious personality, an unreal presence, and this unreal presence cannot be approached by God. ~ Anthony Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Bloom
The Gospel is a harsh document; the Gospel is ruthless and specific in what it says; the Gospel is not meant to be re-worded, watered down and brought to the level of either our understanding or our taste. The Gospel is proclaiming something which is beyond us and which is there to stretch our mind, to widen our heart beyond the bearable at times, to recondition all our life, to give us a world view which is simply the world upside-down and this we are not keen to accept. ~ Metropolitan Anthony Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Metropolitan Anthony Bloom
So often when we say 'I love you' we say it with a huge 'I' and a small 'you'. We use love as a conjunction instead of it being a verb implying action. It's no good just gazing out into open space hoping to see the Lord; instead we have to look closely at our neighbour, someone whom God has willed into existence, someone whom God has died for. Everyone we meet has a aright to exist, because he has value in himself, and we are not used to this. The acceptance of otherness is a danger to us, it threatens us. To recognise the other's right to be himself might mean recognising his right to kill me. But if we set a limit to this right to exist, it's no right at all. Love is difficult. Christ was crucified because he taught a kind of love which is a terror for men, a love which demands total surrender: it spells death. ~ Anthony Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Bloom
PLEASE and THANK YOU...two polite phrases which are slowly disappearing from our vocabulary. ~ Anthony T. Hincks
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony T. Hincks
I, personally, think there is a really danger of taking food too seriously. Food should be part of the bigger picture. ~ Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Bourdain
Ah, 6655321, think on the divine suffering. Meditate on that, my boy.' And all the time he had this rich manny von of Scotch on him, and then he went off to his little cantora to peet some more. So I read all about the scourging and the crowning with thorns and then the cross veshch and all that cal, and I viddied better that there was something in it. While the stereo played bits of lovely Bach I closed my glazzies and viddied myself helping in and even taking charge of the tolchocking and the nailing in, being dressed in a like toga that was the heighth of Roman fashion. So being in Staja 84F was not all that wasted, and the Governor himself was very pleased to hear that I had taken to like Religion, and that was where I had my hopes. ~ Anthony Burgess
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Burgess

Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony T. Hincks
With 'Brick' there was the Dashiell Hammett influence, and with 'Brothers Bloom' there was a really strong Fellini influence - both those movies wore that on their sleeve. ~ Rian Johnson
Anthony Bloom quotes by Rian Johnson
Our most cultural state is one of total certainty - which is the reason those of us who are most certain are those who are most out of touch with nature (i.e., reality). ~ Anthony Marais
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Marais
He was saddled with the equally serious military – indeed, also civilian – handicap of chronic inability to be obsequious to superiors in rank, particularly when he found them uncongenial. ~ Anthony Powell

Thus, flexibility, as displayed by water, is a sign of life. Rigidity, its opposite, is an indicator of death. ~ Anthony Lawlor
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Lawlor
What the immune system of man has in its advanced development is what we call immunological memory, so that once it sees something for the first time, when it sees it the second or the third time, it can respond against it in a way that's much more accelerated than when it sees it for the first time. ~ Anthony Fauci
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Fauci
That's what happens if you don't address the darkness in you. You become repressed and depressed and suicidal. ~ Anthony Hopkins
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Hopkins
People think getting a new partner is like getting a new car. ~ Orlando Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Orlando Bloom
Earthly riches are like the reed. Its roots are sunk in the swamp, and its exterior is fair to behold; but inside it is hollow. If a man leans on such a reed, it will snap off and pierce his soul. ~ Anthony Of Padua
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Of Padua
Simplicity is, as simple as you make it. ~ Anthony Liccione
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Liccione
Bloom where you are planted. ~ Lynda Cheldelin Fell
Anthony Bloom quotes by Lynda Cheldelin Fell
It's mad because as a woman, you carry the baby for nine months, so you're very conscious that you have a little one inside you. But for a guy, it's suddenly, there's a baby there. ~ Orlando Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Orlando Bloom
Those who have the bullets also have the bandages. ~ Anthony Marra
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Marra
Our connections to the Oneness of the Universe/God are both physical/atomic matter and nonphysical spiritual/energy. What we can see and measure we consider physical reality, composed of atomic matter. What we cannot always see but can experience or measure the effects of, we consider nonphysical, spiritual reality, composed of energy. ~ Russell Anthony Gibbs
Anthony Bloom quotes by Russell Anthony Gibbs
Listen -

You are not a lonesome freeway with a history
of accidents, or the damaged record of
every pair of palms that tried to unravel you. You are
not a regret, not a letdown. Here you are, living
like a scarlet war - no part of you wants to be
real. This is when you need to open like a bud
to the arms that hold you, even if you prefer to run
from the sun into the shadowy sirens that call
your name like a prayer.

Repeat after me - you are a vessel of roses, and
you wont always be in bloom, but I promise that
the frost never stays for long. I promise that the
light will find you. ~ Bianca Sparacino
Anthony Bloom quotes by Bianca Sparacino
I try to very hard to avoid a situation where I would be eating cat or dog; I've managed to gracefully avoid that. It's hypocritical of me and an arbitrary line, but one that I have managed to avoid crossing. ~ Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Bourdain
At present I answer about 100 letters a month, and read 300 emails. ~ Piers Anthony
Anthony Bloom quotes by Piers Anthony
Children are often called our greatest resource, as if they were deposits of tin. But a child is not (just as an adult is not) a lever in an economic machine, a vehicle for commerce, a revenue source for the all-powerful state. He is a human being, made in the image and likeness of God - made, that is, for goodness and truth and beauty. ~ Anthony Esolen
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Esolen
I'd love to work with Sir Anthony Hopkins, but if that doesn't happen, I'd sneak on to a film set and watch him at work. He is a compelling actor. ~ Marc Warren
Anthony Bloom quotes by Marc Warren
Elves are like trees, grounded and focused from the trunk down but graceful and agile on top. ~ Orlando Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Orlando Bloom
As well, there's the age-old syndrome common to fans of musicians with passionate and discerning cult followings. When the objects of adulation are crass enough to become popular, they quickly become a case of "used to be good. ~ Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Bourdain
But you are not under a system similar to that by which the Jews were obliged to pay tithes to the priests. If there were any such rule laid down in the Gospel, it would destroy the beauty of spontaneous giving and take away all the bloom from the fruit of your liberality! There is no law to tell me what I should give my father on his birthday. There is no rule laid down in any law book to decide what present a husband should give to his wife, nor what token of affection we should bestow upon others whom we love. No, the gift must be a free one, or it has lost all its sweetness. ~ Charles Spurgeon
Anthony Bloom quotes by Charles Spurgeon
You need to be buried deep in the dirt before you can find your bloom. ~ Roz Inga
Anthony Bloom quotes by Roz Inga
Being referred to as a hunk or a heartthrob makes me nervous, but it's flattering. But I'm more interested in being an actor than a heartthrob. ~ Orlando Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Orlando Bloom
Alexander speaks. Anthony, I'm going to tell you something. In 1941, when I met your mother, she had turned seventeen and was working at the Kirov factory, the largest weapons production facility in the Soviet Union. Do you know what she wore? A ratty brown cardigan that belonged to her grandmother. It was tattered and patched and two sizes too big for her. Even though it was June, she wore her much larger sister's black skirt that was scratchy wool. The skirt came down to her shins. Her too-big thick black cotton stockings bunched up around her brown work boots. Her hands were covered in black grime she couldn't scrub off. She smelled of gasoline and nitrocellulose because she had been making bombs and flamethrowers all day. And still I came every day to walk her home. ~ Paullina Simons
Anthony Bloom quotes by Paullina Simons
Focus your mind and you can create whatever you want. Sometimes, just believe and let the Universe work out the details. It may deliver the results in ways you could not have imagined. ~ Russell Anthony Gibbs
Anthony Bloom quotes by Russell Anthony Gibbs
The eggs taste like clouds. Like spun gold. ~ Anthony Doerr
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Doerr
The window glows. The slow sandy light of dawn permeates the room. Everything transient and aching; everything tentative. To be here, in this room, high in this house, out of the cellar, with her: it is like medicine. ~ Anthony Doerr
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Doerr
Every human being has the right to be rich in mind, body and spirit. They need to live a life that is comforting, productive and continuous. They do not need to compete to reach this level of success but to take it in their strides and to relish the opportunity to pluck from The Universe its opulence. ~ Anthony Pan
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Pan
What had Miss Finch said, all those years ago? That there were no do-overs, no comebacks? That once someone was gone, they were gone forever. Dead flowers didn't bloom, and they didn't grow. ~ Alexandra Bracken
Anthony Bloom quotes by Alexandra Bracken
The fact that I was a junkie for a long time is only one slice of my own personal pie, which is made up of a lot of different slices. ~ Anthony Kiedis
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Kiedis
Most right-wing person I know! ~ Howard Bloom
Anthony Bloom quotes by Howard Bloom
I peddle my wares as fast as I pedal my bicycle and petal my flowers, and that's why my sales growth seems so slow. But given time, my brand will be in full bloom. ~ Jarod Kintz
Anthony Bloom quotes by Jarod Kintz
Since woman's rights have come up a young woman is better able to fight her own battle. ~ Anthony Trollope
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Trollope
Rather than turning the page, it's much easier to just throw the book away. ~ Anthony Liccione
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Liccione
There is a sense in which a painted stick is a stick in bloom. This stick points to the hidden face of God. Sometimes it points to you. ~ Tom Robbins
Anthony Bloom quotes by Tom Robbins
Sure, my uncle killed himself playing Russian Roulette. But I choose to remember him as a great Russian Roulette player. ~ Anthony Jeselnik
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Jeselnik
True greatness is the most ready to recognize and most willing to obey those simple outward laws which have been sanctioned by the experience of mankind. ~ James Anthony Froude
Anthony Bloom quotes by James Anthony Froude
silent desperation of everything they never said - gaps and absences in every conversation, the past circumscribing the present, the future hemming in the past. ~ Anthony Doerr
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Doerr
Maybe the Sea of Flames never existed at all, maybe curses aren't real, maybe her father is right: Earth is all magma and continental crust and ocean. Gravity and time. Stones are just stones and rain is just rain and misfortune is just bad ~ Anthony Doerr
Anthony Bloom quotes by Anthony Doerr
Children raised by the Double-Minded parent will often grow up having codependent tendencies, seeking acceptance from others, being unrealistic in their view of "self," and feeling insecure. They are confused about what it means to follow Christ, and might avoid their parents in adulthood. ~ Michelle Anthony
Anthony Bloom quotes by Michelle Anthony
I wouldn't want to compare myself to David Byrne whom I consider a genius, but what I think what we have in common is that he's also a guy who is very interested in the world and who has a lot of passions beyond singing and playing guitar. ~ Anthony Bourdain
