Song

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.

Sir Thomas Wyatt has been credited with introducing the Petrarchan sonnet into the English language. Wyatt's father had been one of Henry VII's Privy Councilors and remained a trusted adviser when Henry VIII came to the throne in 1509. Wyatt followed his father to court, but it seems the young poet may have fallen in love with the king's mistress, Anne Boleyn. Their acquaintance is certain, although whether or not the two actually shared a romantic relationship remains unknown. But in his poetry, Wyatt called his mistress Anna and there do seem to be correspondences. For instance, this poem might well have been written about the King's claim on Anne Boleyn: ~ Christina Rossetti
Anne Boleyn quotes by Christina Rossetti
To Jesus Christ I commend my soul; Lord Jesus, receive my soul. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
And thus I take my leave of the world and of you all, and I heartily desire you all to pray for me. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
The whore or the saint: these seemed to be the prototypes set up by the Church's historic misogyny. But was there no alternative model to follow?

Yes, for Anne had seen for herself that it was possible to be an independent thinker, set free from the pattern of sinful Eve or patient Griselda. She had been in the company of clever, strong-willed women like the Regent Margaret of Austria and Margaret of Navarre. The influence of evangelism had enabled women of character to take an alternative path, one that offered Anne Boleyn a different future. ~ Joanna Denny
Anne Boleyn quotes by Joanna Denny
I think you underestimate how closely I studied the life of Anne Boleyn. Don't be fooled by my Byzantine-loving exterior. ~ Dahlia Adler
Anne Boleyn quotes by Dahlia Adler
The Prince shall think you the most beautiful lady he's ever seen."
Alex replied wryly, "Let's hope that's not the case, Eliza. History teaches us that things never end well when royalty set their eyes on 'the most beautiful
lady' they've ever seen. Have a care; if you perform your tasks too well, I could be haunting the Tower of London without a head, alongside Anne Boleyn. ~ Sarah MacLean
Anne Boleyn quotes by Sarah MacLean
Anne Boleyn was a warrior forced to use the only tools available to a woman in her position at that time. She was bold and ambitious, and had she had a son, history would have been very different. ~ Lydia Leonard
Anne Boleyn quotes by Lydia Leonard
The story was certainly current at court, and in 1535 a Member of Parliament, Sir George Throckmorton, accused Henry to his face of 'meddling' with both Anne's mother and sister Mary.
'Never with the mother,' Henry said. ~ Alison Weir
Anne Boleyn quotes by Alison Weir
Why doesn't anyone tell you we all wind up married to Henry the VIII?...
...My dear Anne Boleyn,...the only way a woman can avoid waking up next to Henry is to model herself after his daughter Elizabeth and sleep next to no one at all. ~ Judith Claire Mitchell
Anne Boleyn quotes by Judith Claire Mitchell
I had a radio show at the local college and I got kicked off the air and banished forever for playing music from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Alice Cooper, and David Bowie because (quote-unquote) "They were gay." So, things have changed quite a bit. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
I took piano lessons when I was real little. And you know ... I hated it.
But by the time I was in junior high, I had some kind of knowledge of the keyboards. In my very early years I played keyboards and bass. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
In my small town, nothing really good happened too often and I thought, 'What am I doing here? I'm wasting my life.' ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
Seduce me. Write letters to me. And poems, I love poems. Ravish me with your words. Seduce me. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
If it ever lay in my power, I will work the Cardinal as much displeasure as he has done to me. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
My parents were very old school, as were my grandparents who went through the Great Depression and were a big influence on my life. So for them it was very important for me to have a college education and to pursue a normal job that would give me benefits and things like that.
So they were very, very much opposed to me being a musician. They were all pretty horrified. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
Ann Boleyn...a Renaissance Audrey Hepburn in a little black dress. ~ JoAnn Spears
Anne Boleyn quotes by JoAnn Spears
The Light in the Labyrinth is a beautifully written book, a gem. I savoured every word; words written with so much 'colour'. Even though I know the story of Queen Anne Boleyn, Dunn's perspective on her last days is missing in so many other books of the genre. Dunn gives grace to the history and an honest, and very compassionate look at Anne's last days. I cried in the end, shedding tears for the young Kate, Anne and her little Bess. I have not yet read a Tudor book that has moved me to tears, as this wonderful journey does. Dunn's dedication and research shines through in this unforgettable book, a book not just for young readers, but also for all." - Lara Salzano, avid Tudor reader. ~ Wendy J. Dunn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Wendy J. Dunn
But Anne, do you love him?" I asked curiously.
The curve of her hood hid all but the corner of her smile. "I am a fool to own it, but I am in a fever for his touch. ~ Philippa Gregory
Anne Boleyn quotes by Philippa Gregory
Anne Boleyn isn't a sympathetic character, but I like that she isn't a people pleaser. She's ambitious and manipulative, but she's honest. I'm biased, but I don't think a woman who has said 'no' to the King of England for six years would jump into bed with four of his best friends. She was a slick political mind. ~ Lydia Leonard
Anne Boleyn quotes by Lydia Leonard
The man behind the counter at the donut store had been somewhat less than courteous ever since I had prematurely tried to hypnotize him during my first month of practice. Now as I re-entered the donut store he fixed me with a chilly glare. I sauntered up to the counter, then I threw upon him my hypnotizingest glare. "You are getting sleep," I told him. "No, you are getting sleepy," he retorted, his hypnotic eyes boring into mine. The son-of-a-bitch had been studying hypnotism too! "You are a young Georage Washington, and you've been chopping down the cherry tree," I asserted, and he became the boy President. "I cannot tell a lie," he piped in a childish voice. But it didn't last, and he shook my control free. "You are Anne Boleyn," he said, and it was true! "Don't cut off my head!" I begged... ~ Michael Kupperman
Anne Boleyn quotes by Michael Kupperman
My new world is etched in diamonds and sealed in gold, drowning in pretension. ~ Dawn Ius
Anne Boleyn quotes by Dawn Ius
a royal bride could come to enjoy considerable power and influence, as did both Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. Yet such status and power emanated solely from her husband. She enjoyed no freedoms but those he permitted her. Without him, she was nothing. Queens ~ Alison Weir
Anne Boleyn quotes by Alison Weir
I didn't care whether or not it was acceptable to mainstream society to be in a rock band. This is what I wanted to do. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
Good Christian people, I am come hither to die, for according to the law, and by the law I am judged to die, and therefore I will speak nothing against it. I am come hither to accuse no man, nor to speak anything of that, whereof I am accused and condemned to die. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
While the portrait was originally owned by the Howards, as the earls of Arundel, it is unlikely that this family would have retained a portrait of their notorious ancestress for in the wake of her execution, as with Anne Boleyn, they hastily dissociated themselves from Katherine and almost certainly destroyed any images of the queen which they had once owned. ~ Conor Byrne
Anne Boleyn quotes by Conor Byrne
For I chase but one hind, he says, one strange deer timid and wild, and she leads me off the paths that other men have trod, and by myself into the depths of the wood. ~ Hilary Mantel
Anne Boleyn quotes by Hilary Mantel
Anne Boleyn is an intriguing character. She seems to appeal to modern-day women in a very potent way. Because she was such an independently opinionated and spirited young woman, which at the time was unheard of. ~ Natalie Dormer
Anne Boleyn quotes by Natalie Dormer
From a private gentlewoman you have made me first a marchioness, then a queen; and, as you can raise me no higher in the world, you are now sending me to be a saint in Heaven. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
Before anything else I was a woman who was capable of passion and who had a great need and a great desire for love. ~ Philippa Gregory
Anne Boleyn quotes by Philippa Gregory
I was a pretty lousy bass player. But the band I was in couldn't find a bass player in our small town and it was more important to have a bass than keyboards, so that's what I did. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
I was born to be your rival,' she [Anne] said simply. 'And you mine. We're sisters, aren't we? ~ Philippa Gregory
Anne Boleyn quotes by Philippa Gregory
In the first play, the crisis is Thomas More. In the second it's Anne Boleyn. In the third book, and the third play, it's crisis every day, an overlapping series of only just negotiable horrors. It's climbing and climbing. Then a sudden abrupt fall - within days. ~ Hilary Mantel
Anne Boleyn quotes by Hilary Mantel
Only during courtship might a woman briefly gain the upper hand, as both Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour did, but woe betide her if she did not quickly learn to conform once the wedding-ring was on her finger. The ~ Alison Weir
Anne Boleyn quotes by Alison Weir
Famously, Anne Boleyn was not a beauty: she was more about quirkiness and an innate sensuality, and there are a lot of references to her eyes. Which sends out a great message for women, because life is not about the aesthetic all the time. ~ Natalie Dormer
Anne Boleyn quotes by Natalie Dormer
Katherine of Aragon was a staunch but misguided woman of principle; Anne Boleyn an ambitious adventuress with a penchant for vengeance; Jane Seymour a strong-minded matriarch in the making; Anne of Cleves a good-humoured woman who jumped at the chance of independence; Katherine Howard an empty-headed wanton; and Katherine Parr a godly matron who was nevertheless all too human when it came to a handsome rogue. ~ Alison Weir
Anne Boleyn quotes by Alison Weir
Her unusual dark hair and sultry eyes made her stand out--- Anne Boleyn was Tudor England's Angelina Jolie amid a sea of Reese Witherspoons. ~ Kris Waldherr
Anne Boleyn quotes by Kris Waldherr
People ask me if I think Anne Boleyn was a feminist ... but she wasn't striking out on behalf of women, and she wasn't particularly keen on them. ~ Lydia Leonard
Anne Boleyn quotes by Lydia Leonard
I shall be dark and French and fashionable and difficult. And you shall be sweet and open and English and fair. What a pair we shall be! What man can resist us? ~ Philippa Gregory
Anne Boleyn quotes by Philippa Gregory
Going out on the road as a 14- or 15-year old and playing clubs with 20-year old guys was just not acceptable. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
He raised an eyebrow. "Where did you get this? Is our Anne Boleyn suddenly from Mars?" He chuckled. "I always thought she hailed from Wiltshire."
Luce's mind raced to catch up. She was playing Anne Boleyn? She'd never read this play, but Daniel's costume suggested he was playing the king, Henry VIII.
"Mr. Shakespeare-ah,Will-thought it would look good-"
"Oh,Will did?" Daniel smirked, bot believing her at all but seeming not to care. It was strange to feel that she could do or say almost anything and Daniel would still find it charming. "You're a little bit mad, aren't you, Lucinda?"
"I-well-"
He brushed her cheek with the back of his finger. "I adore you."
"I adore you, too." The words tumbled from her mouth, feeling so real and so true after the last few stammering lies. It was like letting out a long-held breath. "I've been thinking, thinking a lot,and I wanted to tell you that-that-"
"Yes?"
"The truth is that what I feel for you is...deeper than adoration." She pressed her hands over his heart. "I trust you. I trust your love. I know how strong it is,and how beautiful." Luce knew that she couldn't come right out and say what she really meant-she was supposed to be a different version of herself, and the other times, when Daniel had figured out who she was, where she'd come from,he'd clammed up immediately and told her to leave. But maybe if she chose her words carefully, Daniel would understand. "It may seem like sometimes I-I forgot wha ~ Lauren Kate
Anne Boleyn quotes by Lauren Kate
grudge who grudge ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
Remember me when you do pray that hope doth lead from day to day. ~ Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Boleyn
Romeo was cute ... "
"Cute?" Alessandro rolled his eyes. "What kind of man is cute?"
" ... and an excellent dancer ... "
"Romeo had feet of lead! He said so himself!"
" ... but most importantly," I concluded, "he had nice hands! ~ Anne Fortier
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Fortier
A church without symbols, a church without baptism or communion where only the real things mattered and where the atonement must be as real as the sin itself, where for instance if you broke a playmate's toy in anger you must go home immediately and fetch a toy of your own, of as good or better quality, and give it to that playmate for keeps and then announce your error at Public Amending on Sunday. ~ Anne Tyler
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Tyler
'The Others' books take place in an alternate Earth where the Earth natives have been the dominant predators throughout the world's history, and humans are nowhere near the top of the food chain. But humans are clever and resilient, if not always wise, and have made some bargains with the Others in order to survive. ~ Anne Bishop
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Bishop
All of them. Fated to love in vain. ~ Anne Rouen
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Rouen
I don't think you have time to waste not writing because you are afraid you won't be good at it. ~ Anne Lamott
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Lamott
Diana: "Gilbert told Charlie Sloan that you were the smartest girl in school, right in front of Josie."
Anne: "He did?"
Diana: "He told Charlie being smart was better than being good looking."
Anne: "I should have known he meant to insult me. ~ L.M. Montgomery
Anne Boleyn quotes by L.M. Montgomery
I have been overwhelmed by the response that I have received on the doorstep during this campaign. ~ Anne Campbell
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Campbell
All I ever wanted since I arrived here on earth are the same things I needed as a baby, to go from cold to warm, lonely to held, the vessel to the giver, empty to full. ~ Anne Lamott
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Lamott
And what if you don't come?"
"I will. No matter what happens."
"I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way,'" she murmured. ~ Anne Stuart
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Stuart
She left me, offended at my want of sympathy, and thinking, no doubt, that I envied her. I did not - at least, I firmly believed I did not. ~ Anne Bronte
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Bronte
I was right not to be afraid of any thief but myself, who will end by leaving me nothing. ~ Katherine Anne Porter
Anne Boleyn quotes by Katherine Anne Porter
I don't think you ever think of a big city as sweet or community, but there are cities that I think of as charming and particular and interesting cities. I live in one now, Charleston. ~ Anne Rivers Siddons
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Rivers Siddons
You are the son of the Lord God! She said. That's why you can kill and bring back to life, that's why you can heal a blind man as Joseph saw you do, that's why you can pray for snow and there will be snow, that's why you can dispute with your uncle Cleopas when he forgets you're a boy, that's why you make sparrows from clay and bring them to life. Keep your power inside you. Guard it until your Father in Heaven shows you the time to use it. If he's made you a child, then he's made you a child to grow in wisdom as well as in everything else. ~ Anne Rice
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Rice
Hope the play will be a success and that the message which it contains will, through you, reach as many people as possible and awaken in them a sense of responsibility to humanity. ~ Anne Frank
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Frank
I sing everywhere. I have a very patient husband. He says he doesn't mind. But we've only been married a year and a half! ~ Anne Hathaway
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Hathaway
Who had taken a violent fancy to me, mistaking me for something vastly better than I was. ~ Anne Bronte
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Bronte
This is a specific person, do you understand? Not just some patient. I want to make sure you realize that. ~ Anne Tyler
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Tyler
Idea that all the beats are wildly liberal and progressive is ridiculous. You have people thinking for themselves and having certain affinities because of their upbringing and who their family are, their own people who were close to them who fought in these wars and so on. It's complicated. But they had that ability to continue the conversation. ~ Anne Waldman
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Waldman
I do not grieve for him as a wife, as Anne Devereux has grieved for her husband William Herbert. She promised him she would never remarry, she swore she would go to her grave hoping to meet him in heaven. I suppose they were in some sort of love, thought married by contract. I suppose they found some sort of passion in their marriage. It is rare but not impossible. I do hope that they have no given my son ideas about loving his wife; a man who is to be king can marry only for advantage. A woman of sense would marry only for the improvement of her family. Only a lustful fool dreams every night of a marriage of love. ~ Philippa Gregory
Anne Boleyn quotes by Philippa Gregory
I try very hard not to take work home, but it can be tricky. Sometimes it feels as if you are wearing your costume underneath your own clothes! I suppose things are always ticking away in the back of your mind. ~ Anne-Marie Duff
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne-Marie Duff
This is a hard planet, and we're a vulnerable species. And all I can do is pray: Help. When ~ Anne Lamott
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Lamott
Thank God he killed the guy. Oh, now, wait a minute. What kind of a prayer was that! ~ Anne Rice
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Rice
Marilla!" Anne sat down on Marilla's gingham lap, took Marilla's lined face between her hands, and looked gravely and tenderly into Marilla's eyes. "I'm not a bit changed - not really. I'm only just pruned down and branched out. The real me - back here - is just the same. It won't make a bit of difference where I go or how much I change outwardly; at heart I shall always be your little Anne, who will love you and Matthew and dear Green Gables more and better every day of her life. ~ L.M. Montgomery
Anne Boleyn quotes by L.M. Montgomery
Caught between the tongue and the taste. ~ Anne Carson
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Carson
Eventually I want to be a full-time mother who works occasionally - and being an actor you have that freedom. ~ Carrie-Anne Moss
Anne Boleyn quotes by Carrie-Anne Moss
I pass off a few more résumés and jet away from her and that cinnamon smell, reserving the last paper in my hand so I can finish reading it. "Whoa - hello. What's this?" I mumble, staring at the paper. "Jess Jordan's How to be Normal Checklist, by Kika Jordan? Who's Kika?" I laugh.

The way her face has turned whiter than the ice at the sports complex, I think this paper is no joke.

"Kika's my little sister. Hand that over!"

Do the right thing. Like she said, this is private information. None of my business.

Only, it could possibly be my business.

Indirectly. Not her fault…not mine…

Jess's eyes have turned wild, exposed. "She made the list for me - as a joke. It's revenge. Last week I made her one on personal hygiene called: How NOT to Repel All Mankind. ~ Anne Eliot
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Eliot
Far below were the limestone flats they called the Flaggy Shore; grey rocks under a grey sky, and there were days when the sea was a glittering grey and your eyes could not tell if it was dusk or dawn, your eyes were always adjusting. It was like the rocks took the light and hid it away. And that was the thing about Boolavaun, it was a place that made itself hard to see. ~ Anne Enright
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Enright
She might have forgotten names and faces and people and events, but she hadn't forgotten emotions. ~ Anne Stuart
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Stuart
The biggest mistake she'd seen several women make, was going into a relationship thinking she could change the man. ~ Melody Anne
Anne Boleyn quotes by Melody Anne
I wish I had more time to write. ~ Jayne Anne Phillips
Anne Boleyn quotes by Jayne Anne Phillips
Forgiveness doesn't work that way. You may want to forgive, but you can't do it yet. Forgiving someone can take weeks, months, years. Sometimes it takes a lifetime. ~ Anne Bishop
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Bishop
But suicides have a special language.
Like carpenters they want to know which tools.
They never ask why build.
Twice I have so simply declared myself,
have possessed the enemy, eaten the enemy,
have taken on his craft, his magic. ~ Anne Sexton
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Sexton
A light wind swept over the corn, and all nature laughed in the sunshine. ~ Anne Bronte
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Bronte
Necessity breeds solution. ~ Anne McCaffrey
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne McCaffrey
Woman must come of age by herself. This is the essence of "coming of age" -to learn how to stand alone. ~ Anne Morrow Lindbergh
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Morrow Lindbergh
I write because I want to have more than one life. ~ Anne Tyler
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Tyler
I'm always honest, whether I'm in the limelight or not. ~ Anne Heche
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Heche
Think of a fine painter attempting to capture an inner vision, beginning with one corner of the canvas, painting what she thinks should be there, not quite pulling it off, covering it over with white paint, and trying again, each time finding out what her painting isn't, until she finally finds out what it is. And when you finally do find out what one corner of your vision is; you're off and running. ~ Anne Lamott
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Lamott
He didn't know where I lived, because I think he feared, in his heart of hearts, that I didn't trust him, that my work had slowly eroded the love for him which I felt.
But I did trust him ... I did love him. I didn't love anyone in the world but him. I just didn't want anyone to know where I lived. ~ Anne Rice
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Rice
If you're not someone who has a natural and effortless love for yourself, it's hard to let go of your desire to please other people, and that's really not an ingredient for a happy life. ~ Anne Hathaway
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Hathaway
Evil is maybe lying to God.
Or better, lying to love. ~ Anne Sexton
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Sexton
Take time to play! Ask for what you want. Laugh. Live loudly. Be avid. Learn a new thing. Be Yourself! ~ Mary Anne Radmacher
Anne Boleyn quotes by Mary Anne Radmacher
It seemed at momemts, When I sat alone in the dark stateroom, that the sky had come down to meet the sea and some great secert was to be revealed. ~ Anne Rice
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Rice
I do love the beginning of the summer hols,' said Julian. They always seem to stretch out ahead for ages and ages.'
'They go so nice and slowly at first,' said Anne, his little sister. 'Then they start to gallop. ~ Enid Blyton
Anne Boleyn quotes by Enid Blyton
While autism's embodied pathology is understood to be certain, its etiological origins remain unknown. Because of this unknown origin, all bodies are understood as potentially disordered. The mother, who was not so long ago under surveillance and scrutiny, must now adopt the paternalistic position of surveiller - she must watch her children and look for bodily manifestations or signs of disorder and seek biomedical intervention. This, of course, does not free the mother completely from being herself an object of scrutiny. ~ Anne McGuire
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne McGuire
I wonder. If I had you wear that mask today, Anne, would you find the courage to tell me what is troubling you?"
Anne would very much have liked to confide in her father, but where in the world would she begin?
He leaned over and whispered in her ear. "I will tell you a secret, my dear. All of my children are shy. They have simply learned the art of wearing masks. ~ Lena Coakley
Anne Boleyn quotes by Lena Coakley
If you want to feel loving, I coached myself, do something loving. This is basic soul care. ~ Anne Lamott
Anne Boleyn quotes by Anne Lamott
Alas, the world turned out so very different from the noble battleground she had led me to expect. The stakes were puny, the people gray and gutless; my Amazon arts were futile here. ~ Anne Fortier
