After seizing state power, the victors have a powerful interest in moving the revolution out of the streets and into the museums and schoolbooks as quick as possible, lest the people decide to repeat the experience. ~ James C. Scott
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by James C. Scott
[On the eve of the French Revolution:]
It is impossible to imagine a more disorderly Assembly. They neither reason, examine, nor discuss. They clap those whom they approve and hiss those whom they disapprove. . . .

Everything almost is elective, and consequently no one obeys. It is an anarchy beyond conception, and they will be obliged to take back their chains for some time to come at least. And so much for that licentious spirit which they dignify with the name of "Love of Liberty." Their Literati, whose heads are turned by romantic notions picked up in books, and who are too lofty to look down upon that kind of man which really exists, and too wise to heed the dictates of common-sense and experience, have turned the heads of their countrymen, and they have run-a-muck at a Don Quixote constitution such as you are blessed with in Pennsylvania. I need say no more. You will judge of the effects of such a constitution upon people supremely depraved. ~ Gouverneur Morris
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Gouverneur Morris
What I always hate is when people call our movement a 'revolution'. For this to be a revolution, we would have to be opposing a standing government. Look around; there is no standing government. ~ Joe Reyes
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Joe Reyes
Maybe nostalgia is itself the problem. A Democrat I met in Macon during a conversation we had about the local enthusiasm for Trump told me that "people want to go back to Mayberry", the setting of the beloved old Andy Griffith Show. (As it happens, the actual model for Mayberry, Mount Airy, a bedraggled town in North Carolina, has gone all in on the Trump revolution, as the Washington Post recently reported.)

Maybe it's also true, as my liberal friends believe, that what people in this part of the country secretly long to go back to are the days when the Klan was riding high or when Quantrill was terrorizing the people of neighboring Kansas, or when Dred Scott was losing his famous court case. For sure, there is a streak of that ugly sentiment in the Trump phenomenon.

But I want to suggest something different: that the nostalgic urge does not necessarily have to be a reactionary one. There is nothing un-progressive about wanting your town to thrive, about recognizing that it isn't thriving today, about figuring out that the mid-century, liberal way worked better.

For me, at least, that is how nostalgia unfolds. When I drive around this part of the country, I always do so with a WPA guidebook in hand, the better to help me locate the architectural achievements of the Roosevelt years. I used to patronize a list of restaurants supposedly favored by Harry Truman (they are slowly disappearing).

And these days, as I pass Trump sign after ~ Thomas Frank
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Thomas Frank
The needs of the state and the needs of its people are not one and the same. They are, more often than not, as separate as could be. ~ J. W. Barlament
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by J. W. Barlament
Anarchy has the flexibility to overcome many of the traditional problems of activism by focusing on revolution not as another cause but as a philosophy of living. This philosophy is as concrete as a brick being thrown through a window or flowers growing in the garden. By making our daily lives revolutionary, we destroy the artificial separation between activism and everyday life. Why settle for comrades and fellow activists when we can have friends and lovers? ~ Curious George Brigade
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Curious George Brigade
The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all. ~ G.K. Chesterton
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by G.K. Chesterton
Where wages command labor, as in the non-slaveholding States, there necessarily takes place between labor and capital a conflict, which leads, in process of time, to disorder, anarchy, and revolution if not counteracted by some appropriate and strong constitutional provision. Such is not the case in the slaveholding States. ~ John C. Calhoun
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by John C. Calhoun
Anarchy is like custard cooking over a flame; it has to be constantly stirred or it sticks and gets heavy, like government. ~ Tom Robbins
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Tom Robbins
This revolution will be noted. It will be successful and above all, it will be in words. ~ Moonshine Noire
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Moonshine Noire
We must institute a coup d'etat, a third revolution, which must beat down anarchy. Dissolve the Paris Commune and destroy its sections! Dissolve the clubs, which preach disorder and equality! Close the Jacobin Club and seal up its papers! ... The triumvirate of Robespierre, Danton and Marat, all the 'levellers', all the anarchists. Then a new Convention will be elected. ~ Jacques Pierre Brissot
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Jacques Pierre Brissot
I closed the gulf of anarchy and brought order out of chaos. I rewarded merit regardless of birth or wealth, wherever I found it. I abolished feudalism and restored equality to all regardless of religion and before the law. I fought the decrepit monarchies of the Old Regime because the alternative was the destruction of all this. I purified the Revolution. ~ Napoleon Bonaparte
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Napoleon Bonaparte
A revolution is a military thing; it has all the military virtues; one of which is that it comes to an end. Two parties fight with deadly weapons, but under certain rules of arbitrary honor; the party that wins becomes the government and proceeds to govern. The aim of civil war, like the aim of all war, is peace… They do not create revolution; what they do create is anarchy; and the difference between these is not a question of violence, but a question of fruitfulness and finality. Revolution of its nature produces government; anarchy only produces more anarchy. Men may have what opinions they please about the beheading of King Charles or King Louis, but they cannot deny that Bradshaw and Cromwell ruled, that Carnot and Napoleon governed. Someone conquered; something occurred. You can only knock off the King's head once. But you can knock off the King's hat any number of times. Destruction is finite, obstruction is infinite: so long as rebellion takes the form of mere disorder (instead of an attempt to enforce a new order) there is no logical end to it; it can feed on itself and renew itself forever. ~ G.K. Chesterton
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by G.K. Chesterton
The Orange Revolution was a powerful example of democracy around the world. The people of Ukraine are continuing to shape their own future. ~ Scott McClellan
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Scott McClellan
CAMILLE DESMOULINS: For the establishment of liberty and the safety of the nation, one day of anarchy will do more than ten years of National Assemblies. ~ Hilary Mantel
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Hilary Mantel
No longer an innocent newborn, Elizabeth can tease, joke, and play make-believe because a gap has opened between what she knows to be so and what she pretends or imagines. More than any other quality, this gap is what distinguishes our species, enabling us to deceive one another and ourselves, but also enabling us to see beyond the way things happen to be, to envision alternatives, to make art and science and revolution, to invent things new under the sun. ~ Scott Russell Sanders
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Scott Russell Sanders
The voices of actual communities are alive in a way no theory could every be even if, for now, it takes the form of tiny acts of resistance. Who doesn't cheat on taxes, avoid cops, or skip class? These acts themselves may not be revolutionary, but they begin to unravel the control from above. Anarchist approaches must be relevant to everyday experiences and flexible enough to address struggles in different situations and contexts. If we can achieve this, then we may thrive in the world after the dinosaurs. We might even be fortunate enough to be in one of the communities that have a hand in toppling them. ~ Curious George Brigade
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Curious George Brigade
You see, revolution sounds like something that happens, like turning on the light switch, but actually it's moving a large obstacle, and a lot of folks' efforts to push it in one direction or the other have to combine. ~ Gil Scott-Heron
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Gil Scott-Heron
Nowadays myths can be practically momentary: transmitted throughout the world by 24-hour news and the internet, they spread virally, entering the minds of tens and hundreds of millions of people in minutes or hours. Are these true myths, or mass-manufactured fantasies? At times they can be both. In recent years images of resistance to tyranny have been relayed around the world by mass media, many of them captured on mobile phones by the resisters themselves. The myths of revolution that moved the resisters were reinforced, for a time, by the media that make the news. But myths survive for only as long as they are enacted by those who accept them. As popular uprisings go through their normal sequence of rebellion, anarchy and renewed ~ John N. Gray
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by John N. Gray
Free markets are the real people's revolution. ~ Jeffrey Tucker
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Jeffrey Tucker
If a given idea has been held in the human mind for many generations, as almost all our common ideas have, it takes sincere and continued effort to remove it; and if it is one of the oldest we have in stock, one of the big, common, unquestioned world ideas, vast is the labor of those who seek to change it. ~ Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
The time which passes over our heads so imperceptibly makes the same gradual change in habits, manners and character, as in personal appearance. At the revolution of every five years we find ourselves another and yet the same;
there is a change of views, and no less of the light in which we regard them; a change of motives as well as of action. ~ Walter Scott
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Walter Scott
The intelligence suffers today automatically in consequence of the attack on all authority, advantage, or privilege. These things are not done away with, it is needless to say, but numerous scapegoats are made of the less politically powerful, to satisfy the egalitarian rage awakened. ~ Wyndham Lewis
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Wyndham Lewis
The Revolutionaries of all times have not known that anarchy, being the conflict of Lusts and the fatal reign of Violence, substitutes might for right, and paves the way ever for the rule of the most audaciously criminal. ~ Gareth Knight
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Gareth Knight
Anarchy is the sure consequence of tyranny; for no power that is not limited by laws can ever be protected by them. ~ John Milton
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by John Milton
If the bonus army conquered Washington the lawyer had a boat hidden in the Sacramento River, and he was going to row upstream for a few months and then come back because they always needed lawyers after a revolution to straighten out all the legal side. ~ F Scott Fitzgerald
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by F Scott Fitzgerald
If I can't dance to it, it's not my revolution. ~ Emma Goldman
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Emma Goldman
We don't need unity in theory, we need solidarity in practice. ~ Curious George Brigade
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Curious George Brigade
Militaries torture children to 'keep people safe' and corporations destroy the environment to 'give you jobs'. ~ Heather Marsh
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Heather Marsh
We're still in the first minutes of the first day of the Internet revolution. ~ Scott Cook
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Scott Cook
One of the few things my father says when he's had a few that I agree with is that kids don't have much balls in this generation. Some of them are trying to start the revolution by bombing U.S. government washrooms, but none of them are throwing Molotov cocktails at the Pentagon. ~ Stephen King
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Stephen King
Take one famous example: arguments about property destruction after Seattle. Most of these, I think, were really arguments about capitalism. Those who decried window-breaking did so mainly because they wished to appeal to middle-class consumers to move towards global exchange-style green consumerism, and to ally with labor bureaucracies and social democrats abroad. This was not a path designed to provoke a direct confrontation with capitalism, and most of those who urged us to take this route were at least skeptical about the possibility that capitalism could ever really be defeated. Many were in fact in favor of capitalism, if in a significantly humanized form. Those who did break windows, on the other hand, didn't care if they offended suburban homeowners, because they did not figure that suburban homeowners were likely to ever become a significant element in any future revolutionary anticapitalist coalition. They were trying, in effect, to hijack the media to send a message that the system was vulnerable -- hoping to inspire similar insurrectionary acts on the part of those who might be considering entering a genuinely revolutionary alliance; alienated teenagers, oppressed people of color, undocumented workers, rank-and-file laborers impatient with union bureaucrats, the homeless, the unemployed, the criminalized, the radically discontent. If a militant anticapitalist movement was to begin, in America, it would have to start with people like these: people who don't need to ~ David Graeber
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by David Graeber
Even some of the greatest technology-led revolutions, or allegedly technology-led, really were only made possible because of trends already present. ~ Scott Cook
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Scott Cook
Basically, if you're not a utopianist, you're a schmuck. ~ Jonathan Feldman
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Jonathan Feldman
If you listen to 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,' by Gil Scott-Heron, that album is dripping with rage. ~ Henry Rollins
Anarchy Revolution Scott quotes by Henry Rollins
If the politicization of art and education represents one large part of the counterculture's legacy, the coarsening of feeling and sensibility is another. No phenomenon has done more to advance this coarsening than rock music. It is impossible to exaggerate the importance of rock music to the agenda of the cultural revolution. It is also impossible to overstate its soul-deadening destructiveness. The most reviled part of Allan Bloom's book The Closing of the American Mind was his chapter criticizing the effects of rock. But Bloom was right in insisting that rock music is a potent weapon in the arsenal of emotional anarchy. The triumph of rock was not only an aesthetic disaster of giant proportions: it was also a moral disaster whose effects are nearly impossible to calculate precisely because they are so pervasive. ~ Roger Kimball
