Mum just laughed gleefully at his mounting frustration, like the villainous matriarch in a Roald Dahl story. I suspect a TV guide would describe her idea of comedy as 'dark', or, at very best, 'alternative'. ~ Matthew Crow
Alternative Humour quotes by Matthew Crow
I moved out of my head office and went out of my mind. ~ Benny Bellamacina
Alternative Humour quotes by Benny Bellamacina
He eased back and murmured, "You taste so damn sweet. Like maple syrup."
"And you taste like stolen bacon. ~ Lorelei James
Alternative Humour quotes by Lorelei James
Failure to recognize the historical specificity of the bourgeois conception of rights and duties leads to serious errors. It is for this reason that Marx registers...a vigorous indictment of the anarchist Proudhon... Proudhon in effect took the specifics of bourgeois legal and economic relations and treated them as universal and foundational for the development of an alternative, socially just economic system. From Marx's standpoint, this is no alternative at all since it merely re-inscribes bourgeois conceptions of value in a supposedly new form of society. This problem is still with us, not only because of the contemporary anarchist revival of interest in Proudhon's ideas but also because of the rise of a more broad-based liberal human rights politics as a supposed antidote to the social and political ills of contemporary capitalism. Marx's critique of Proudhon is directly applicable to this contemporary politics. The UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 is a foundational document for a bourgeois, market-based individualism and as such cannot provide a basis for a thoroughgoing critique of liberal or neoliberal capitalism. Whether it is politically useful to insist that the capitalist political order live up to its own foundational principles is one thing, but to imagine that this politics can lead to a radical displacement of a capitalist mode of production is, in Marx's view, a serious error. ~ David Harvey
Alternative Humour quotes by David Harvey
How many of us have read history, and shook our heads and puffed our chest, and said, "If I were alive during that period, I would never have done those things to those people!" Yet here we are, doing those things to those people. ~ Brian Huskie
Alternative Humour quotes by Brian Huskie
Tucker: "Today we ran into a mama grizzly with two cubs at the ridge off Colter Bay and Clara sang to it to make it go away."
Mrs. Avery: You sang to it?
Tucker: Her singing is that bad. ~ Cynthia Hand
Alternative Humour quotes by Cynthia Hand
Even from far away, I could see people being chased by hellhounds, burned at the stake, forced to run naked through cactus patches or listen to opera music. ~ Rick Riordan
Alternative Humour quotes by Rick Riordan
Padre Blazon was almost shouting by this time, and I had to hush him. People in the restaurant were staring, and one or two of the ladies of devout appearance were heaving their bosoms indignantly. He swept the room with the wild eyes of a conspirator in a melodrama and dropped his voice to a hiss. Fragments of food, ejected from his mouth by this jet, flew about the table. [p.201] ~ Robertson Davies
Alternative Humour quotes by Robertson Davies
Opposites attract but only to torture each other. ~ Judy Balan
Alternative Humour quotes by Judy Balan
Give a man a fish
and a kettle,
and he may never feel its HIS kettle of fish.
Teach a man to fish around for his OWN kettle,
and that's when you get
a tasty home-made fish soup
that everyone can enjoy! ~ Cameron Semmens
Alternative Humour quotes by Cameron Semmens
But we don't have an example of a democratic society existing in a socialist economy - which is the only real alternative to capitalism in the modern world. ~ Peter L. Berger
Alternative Humour quotes by Peter L. Berger

Alternative Humour quotes by Lt General Brian Horrocks

Alternative Humour quotes by Saul Alinsky
Letting the religious right teach ID in schools is like letting the Marines teach poetry in advanced combat training. As a scientist, I see these the relevancy between the two sets to be equal. If Kansas is going to mess up like this, the least it can do is not be hypocritical and allow equal time for other alternative "theories" like FSMism, which is by far the tastier choice. ~ Julian Simon
Alternative Humour quotes by Julian Simon

Alternative Humour quotes by Sophie Kerr
Our mandate in Habitat for Humanity is to work diligently to help bring into being graceful communities, towns, and cities. his is so important because the alternative is disgraceful. Alternative Humour quotes by Millard Fuller

Alternative Humour quotes by Frances Murray
Do you think you wear a mask?'

'I'm wearing one right now.' Valentino smiled softly. 'We both are.'

'It's a sad thought.'

'Yes,' he said. 'But sometimes I wonder about the alternative. Imagine if we had no secrets, no respite from the truth. What if everything was laid bare the moment we introduced ourselves? ~ Catherine Doyle
Alternative Humour quotes by Catherine Doyle

Alternative Humour quotes by Charon Lloyd-Roberts
I don't like this vision that Turkey is successful because it is as successful as the western powers in economic terms. But I do think they are trying to find a new space in the multi-polar world, and this is what I am advocating. I don't think that Muslims have an alternative model. ~ Tariq Ramadan
Alternative Humour quotes by Tariq Ramadan
I suppose it's impossible to say that they will not invent anything else, because they might," said Zubria. "And, of course, if one thought of something that they might invent, one would have thought of it oneself, therefore one would be the inventor of what one thought of, and they would not be, which would make one an inventor, like them. ~ Philip Dodd
Alternative Humour quotes by Philip Dodd
How do we exorcise one of the Jinn?"
He shrugged. "You got Yellow Pages?"
"Seriously?"
Jai snorted. "Yes, Ari. There are Aissawa Exorcists in the Yellow Pages."
Huffing, Ari walked away from him. "You really need to work on intonation when you use sarcasm. That way people will know when you're being an asshole."
"And you need to work on your gullibility."
"Well, I was under the impression you have no sense of humour so forgive me for believing everything you say."
"Well that should be fun."
"See!" she threw over her shoulder. "No intonation. ~ Samantha Young
Alternative Humour quotes by Samantha Young

In my time first cousins did not meet like strangers. But we are learning modesty from the Americans, and old English ways are too gross for us. ~ J. Sheridan Le Fanu
Alternative Humour quotes by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
You have very Grace Kelly-like tendencies about you. I hear Grace Kelly had a filthy mouth too," he added.

"You know, if you would shut up once in a while you'd be damn near perfect."
"But I'd be a silent panty ripper, which I think is a lot creepier than the angry-boss panty ripper. ~ Christina Lauren
Alternative Humour quotes by Christina Lauren
The futility of everything that comes to us from the media is the inescapable consequence of the absolute inability of that particular stage to remain silent. Music, commercial breaks, news flashes, adverts, news broadcasts, movies, presenters - there is no alternative but to fill the screen; otherwise there would be an irremediable void ... That's why the slightest technical hitch, the slightest slip on the part of the presenter becomes so exciting, for it reveals the depth of the emptiness squinting out at us through this little window. ~ Jean Baudrillard
Alternative Humour quotes by Jean Baudrillard
It is not clear who will bring to the Whitehouse those useful commodities of vivid language, a sense of history and most important - a sense of humour, but Johnson himself will provide many other attributes. He is effective precisely because he is so determined, industrious, personal and even humourless, particularly in dealing with Congress. ( ... ) Kennedy had a detached and even donnish willingness to grant a merit in the other fellow's argument. Johnson is not so inclined to retreat and grants nothing in an argument, not even equal time. Ask not what you have done for Lyndon Johnson, but what you have done for him lately. This may not be the most attractive quality of the new administration but it works. The lovers of style are not too happy with the new administration, but the lovers of substance are not complaining. ~ Robert A. Caro
Alternative Humour quotes by Robert A. Caro
Oh, help!" said Pooh. "I'd better go back."
"Oh, bother!" said Pooh. "I shall have to go on."
"I can't do either!" said Pooh. "Oh, help and bother! ~ Milne, A. A.
Alternative Humour quotes by Milne, A. A.
When Christian teaching fails to connect beauty to the blessing of creation, an alternative account of beauty may develop. In some cases, beauty is appropriated and affirmed as a tool for witness to the gospel. The mistake here is subtle: rather than celebrating beauty as an aspect of the blessing of creation and thus an essential part of the good news of creation and its redemption, beauty becomes merely instrumental to Christian witness. ~ Jonathan R. Wilson
Alternative Humour quotes by Jonathan R. Wilson
Skinny jeans were only good if you had skinny genes. ~ Matt Dunn
Alternative Humour quotes by Matt Dunn
My dear friend, there are two things in this world about which no one can be sure: whether or not one is being deceived by a woman and whether or not a Communist is sincere. ~ Maurice Dekobra
Alternative Humour quotes by Maurice Dekobra
His pretence to profound and obscure scholarship, his blundering ventures in stilted and laboured pseudo-humour, and his often vitriolic outbursts of critical prejudice must all be recognised and forgiven. Beyond and above them, and dwarfing them to insignificance, was a master's vision of the terror that stalks about and within us, and the worm that writhes and slavers in the hideously close abyss. Penetrating to every festering horror in the gaily painted mockery called existence, and in the solemn masquerade called human thought and feelings that vision had power to project itself in blackly magical crystallisations and transmutations; till there bloomed in the sterile America of the 'thirties and 'forties such a moon-nourished garden of gorgeous poison fungi as not even the nether slope of Saturn might boast. ~ H.P. Lovecraft
Alternative Humour quotes by H.P. Lovecraft
So you're a Shadowhunter,' Nate said. 'De Quincey told me that you lot were monsters.'
'Was that before or after he tried to eat you?' Will inquired. ~ Cassandra Clare
Alternative Humour quotes by Cassandra Clare
Johnson! Have I committed any illegal actions?'
Johnson checked his watch. 'Not within the last three minutes, sir. ~ Genevieve Cogman
Alternative Humour quotes by Genevieve Cogman
If he were a man of strong mind, it only gave him fits; but a person of mere average intellect it usually sent mad. ~ Jerome K. Jerome
Alternative Humour quotes by Jerome K. Jerome
When I was fourteen, I had a massive poster on my wall of a giant pop-art mouth advertising a Swiss exhibition of abstract art. My friends and family mocked my pretention, but I loved that poster and the hope it offered of an exciting world of thought beyond the boundaries of stifling Solihull. But one day the poster fell off the wall and the dog pissed all over it, ruining it for ever, while my mother laughed. That poster is what the Alternative Comedy dream meant to me - the possibility of a better world. And now it is covered in dog's piss. ~ Stewart Lee
Alternative Humour quotes by Stewart Lee
You can't draw lines in the sand like that. Humour's a tsunami that doesn't care about your little lines. ~ S.A. Tawks
Alternative Humour quotes by S.A. Tawks
Not understanding the process of a spontaneously-ordered economy goes hand-in-hand with not understanding the creation of resources and wealth. And when a person does not understand the creation of resources and wealth, the only intellectual alternative is to believe that increasing wealth must be at the cost of someone else. This belief that our good fortune must be an exploitation of others may be the taproot of false prophecy about doom that our evil ways must bring upon us. ~ Julian Simon
Alternative Humour quotes by Julian Simon
I'm definitely responsible for the image that I put out there. But it does become frustrating, because I don't want 'sexy' to be my defining characteristic. I'd love for my ambition and will and intellect and sense of humour to define me as well. ~ Eva Mendes
Alternative Humour quotes by Eva Mendes
Where are the deputies?'
'On their way up to the first-aid post.'
'What happened to them?'
'I did. ~ Lee Child
Alternative Humour quotes by Lee Child
Misery, thy name is Mudslide ~ Molly Harper
Alternative Humour quotes by Molly Harper
I did not realize that when money becomes a core value, then education drives towards utility or that the life of the mind will not be counted as good unless it produces measurable results. That public services will no longer be important. That an alternative life to getting and spending will become very difficult as cheap housing disappears. That when communities are destroyed only misery and intolerance are left. ~ Jeanette Winterson
Alternative Humour quotes by Jeanette Winterson
As for Phileas Fogg, it seemed just as if the typhoon were a part of his programme ~ Jules Verne
