Counterproductive Types of Care and Caution

The same careful and cautious tendencies that can be helpful in some situations can become paralyzing in others. You might hold back from opportunities or get caught up in minutia while leaving bigger issues unattended. Very cautious tendencies can also cause people to hold back from attempting to form relationships - whether they be friendships or romantic, business, or collegial relationships. There's always some level of vulnerability that comes along with developing any type of close relationship. Therefore, in some cases, anxiety-based instincts to be self-protective can leave people feeling isolated and alone. Anxious people will sometimes avoid feeling vulnerable at all costs, even if it means feeling lonely or their isolation from peers thwarts their career success. ~ Alice Boyes
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Boyes
I knew what it was to yearn for a life so distant it seemed that it had never been anything more than a dream. ~ Alice Hoffman
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Hoffman
He beat me like he beat the children. Cept he don't never hardly beat them. He say, Celie, git the belt. The children be outside the room peeking through the cracks. It all I can do not to cry. I make myself wood. I say to myself, Celie, you a tree. That's how come I know trees fear man. ~ Alice Walker
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Walker
My mother has told so many times the unbelievable story of how, as a toddler, I would demand raw onions and eat them like apples, I think that, at this juncture, it is a story that just has to be believed. ~ Alice Dreger

And then, just when I know I can live content without Shug, just when Mr. ___ done ast me to marry him again, this time in the spirit as well as in the flesh, and just after I say, Naw, I still don't like frogs, but let's us be friends, Shug write me she's coming home. Now. Is this life or not? *I be so calm.* If she come, I be happy. If she don't I be content. And then I figure this the lesson I was suppose to learn. ~ Alice Walker
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Walker
If a mother respects both herself and her child from his very first day onward, she will never need to teach him respect for others. ~ Alice Miller
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Miller
When you are active, and you must know this so well, that the more you are active, the more you see, the more you go to see. You know, you are curious. One thing leads to another thing, and it gets deeper and deeper, too. And there's no end to it. ~ Alice Walker
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Walker
I like the Alice in Wonderland sculpture in Central Park. I love how it's been rained on forever and looks worn down by time. ~ Conor Oberst
Alice Kinnian quotes by Conor Oberst
To dare it; to get away with it, to enter on preposterous adventures in your own, but newly named, skin. ~ Alice Munro
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Munro
You're not really mad that I'm not having children.

In fact, I would probably love to one day.

You're mad that I'm expressing autonomy of choice.

You're mad that I'm considering other options.

You're mad that I don't view that as my ultimate potential.

You're mad that I dare be selfish enough to make choices based on my best interest, something women are not supposed to do.

You're mad that I consider it a choice, and that I, a woman, am exercising choice.

You're not mad that I'm not having babies.

You're mad because I'm acting like a man. ~ Alice Minium
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Minium
All experience is great providing you live through it.
If it kills you, you've gone too far. ~ Alice Neel

The lyrics about trying to fix someone you love pull me back in time. Even back then he wanted to fix me, when I didn't know I was broken. He's still trying. ~ Alice Feeney
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Feeney
It's not to be expected that an ox and an ass should worship at the crib. Animals are always doing the oddest things in the lives of the saints. It's all part of the poetry, the Alice-In-Wonderland side of religion. ~ Evelyn Waugh
Alice Kinnian quotes by Evelyn Waugh
Life is a journey one that much better traveled with a companion by our side. Sometimes, we lose our companions along the way and then the journey becomes unbearable. You see, human beings are designed for many things, but loneliness isn't one of them. ~ Mary Alice
Alice Kinnian quotes by Mary Alice
If you were to say to me that you needed a romantic and sentimental song in four hours, I would have that song written in four hours. ~ Alice Cooper
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Cooper

Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Munro
I haven't had an alcoholic drink in 22 years, but when I did drink I'd go for either Canadian whisky or Budweiser. Sometimes both. For a long time I used to think "Hey you, get off the floor!" was my name. ~ Alice Cooper
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Cooper
Alice insisted the accelerator had got stuck. She thought of herself as a good driver and hated the idea that anyone would think that the problem was her age. The body's decline creeps like a vine. Day to day, the changes can be imperceptible. You adapt. Then something happens that finally makes it clear that things are no longer the same. The falls didn't do it. The car accident didn't do it. Instead, it was a scam that did. Not long after the car accident, Alice ~ Atul Gawande
Alice Kinnian quotes by Atul Gawande
To have a basic ingredient that can be prepared a million different ways is a beautiful thing. ~ Alice Waters
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Waters

Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Dellal
You don't always have to be doing something. You can just be, and that's plenty. ~ Alice Walker
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Walker
I am here because I have to be here, as here I am supposed to be! All things should be, and usually are, found in their rightful places. Can you imagine how chaotic the world would be if nothing was in its correct place? ~ William O'Brien
Alice Kinnian quotes by William O'Brien
Conscientiousness

Not every anxious person is conscientious, but because you're reading a CBT-based self-help book, there's a good chance you're at least moderately high in conscientiousness - a personality trait associated with having a strong work ethic and a thorough, orderly approach to tasks. People high in conscientiousness often get particularly great results from learning cognitive behavioral principles and skills. Why? They tend to like the systematic nature of a cognitive behavioral approach. They do well because they work hard to understand themselves and are diligent in applying their learning to their lives. Anxious people sometimes underestimate how conscientious they are, so make sure you give yourself enough credit for your conscientiousness.
It's important to understand that conscientiousness is not the same thing as perfectionism. For example, perfectionists might spend so long trying to make something "just right" that they don't have any willpower left over for other important tasks. Perfectionism and conscientiousness tend to be associated with opposite outcomes. For example, in a study of older adults, perfectionism was associated with an increased risk or mortality. Conscientiousness was associated with a decreased risk. There are big advantages to reducing perfectionism but retaining your conscientiousness! ~ Alice Boyes
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Boyes
To be a femme fatale you don't have to be slinky and sensuous and disastrously beautiful, you just have to have the will to disturb. ~ Alice Munro
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Munro
As soon as you opened your mouth and said the word woman, you were beaten down with the argument that you were betraying the class struggle. There are many poignant writings in which feminists first write pages about their class standpoint before getting to their actual issue. What was then known as class warfare is today called anti-racism. The threat of being accused of racism gave birth to false tolerance. ~ Alice Schwarzer
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Schwarzer
If you put a real leaf and a silk leaf side by side, you'll see something of the difference between Homer's poetry and anyone else's. There seem to be real leaves still alive in the 'Iliad,' real animals, real people, real light attending everything. ~ Alice Oswald
Alice Kinnian quotes by Alice Oswald

And then the thrashing of the wind against the house and then what might have been a volley of pistol shots, and then a sound like something slowly spilling from a great height.
