My inspiration for writing music is like Don McLean did when he did "American Pie" or "Vincent". Lorraine Hansberry with "A Raisin in the Sun". Like Shakespeare when he does his thing, like deep stories, raw human needs.

I'm trying to think of a good analogy. It's like, you've got the Vietnam War, and because you had reporters showing us pictures of the war at home, that's what made the war end, or that shit would have lasted longer. If no one knew what was going on we would have thought they were just dying valiantly in some beautiful way. But because we saw the horror, that's what made us stop the war.

So I thought, that's what I'm going to do as an artist, as a rapper. I'm gonna show the most graphic details of what I see in my community and hopefully they'll stop it quick.

I've seen all of that-- the crack babies, what we had to go through, losing everything, being poor, and getting beat down. All of that. Being the person I am, I said no no no no. I'm changing this. ~ Tupac Shakur
African America quotes by Tupac Shakur
The function of the university is not simply to teach breadwinning, or to furnish teachers for the public schools, or to be a centre of polite society; it is, above all, to be the organ of that fine adjustment between real life and the growing knowledge of life, an adjustment which forms the secret of civilization. ~ W.E.B. Du Bois
African America quotes by W.E.B. Du Bois
Musical practice is too young an art in America to warrant a search for men with a conductor's gift. ~ Anton Seidl
African America quotes by Anton Seidl
If you go into a bar in most places in America and even say the word poetry, you'll probably get beaten up. But poetry is a really strong, beautiful form to me, and a lot of innovation in language comes from poetry. ~ Jim Jarmusch
African America quotes by Jim Jarmusch
And let me tell you, you boys of America, that there is no higher inspiration to any man to be a good man, a good citizen, and a good son, brother, or father, than the knowledge that you come from honest blood. ~ John Sergeant Wise
African America quotes by John Sergeant Wise
Peking welcomed me with tremendous parades and gun salutes. The people with me are proud of me, proud that our downtrodden country has taken its place among the great nations. And now, people of America, I ask you, why didn't Eisenhower accord me the same respect? ~ Sukarno
African America quotes by Sukarno
I think that in America there is a new movement of underground movies that wants to kick the ass of independent films that they think whine too much. ~ John Waters
African America quotes by John Waters
You may have heard that America doesn't have enough scientists and is in danger of "falling behind" (whatever that means) because of it. Tell this to an academic scientist and watch her laugh. For the last thirty years, the amount of the U.S. annual budget that goes to non-defense related research has been frozen. From a purely budgetary perspective, we don't have too few scientists, we've got far too many, and we keep graduating more each year. America may say that it values science, but it sure as hell doesn't want to pay for it. Within environmental science in particular, we see the crippling effects that come from having been resource-hobbled for decades: degrading farmland, species extinction, progressive deforestation... The list goes on and on. ~ Hope Jahren
African America quotes by Hope Jahren
I used often to go to America during Prohibition, and there was far more drunkenness there then than before; the prohibition of pornography has much the same effect. ~ Bertrand Russell
African America quotes by Bertrand Russell
Superfund was passed with the good intention of cleaning up America's toxic waste sites. ~ Fred Thompson
African America quotes by Fred Thompson
The Islamic people, the Arabs, were the ones who captured Africans, put them in slavery, and sent them to America as slaves. Why would the people in America want to embrace the religion of slavers. ~ Pat Robertson
African America quotes by Pat Robertson
You see few people here in America who really care very much about living a Christian life in a democratic world. ~ Clare Boothe Luce
African America quotes by Clare Boothe Luce
The world is starving for American leadership. But America has an anti-war president, ~ John Boehner
African America quotes by John Boehner
The Church in contemporary America does not need more strategies, steps, or keys to the Christian life. The Church needs truth, and more specifically, the great foundational truths of historical Christianity. ~ Charles Leiter
African America quotes by Charles Leiter
The first time I was asked whether women can "have it all" was at the Miss America pageant. I said no. I didn't mean that women shouldn't fully pursue their dreams, only that we need to be honest with ourselves. ~ Gretchen Carlson
African America quotes by Gretchen Carlson
Europe historically was populated by two types of people. The first type all followed the rules, worked together, and kept order. The second type all liked to go their own way, take risks, and test boundaries. Then one day, the second group all got on a boat and sailed to America. ~ Timothy P. Carney
African America quotes by Timothy P. Carney
There remains a problem with race in America because of the church's failure to understand the issues from a biblical perspective."

"Rather than being called into a different community by Scripture, we see our broken communities as justified by Scripture."

"Rather than challenge the worldly status quo, religious groups perpetuate stereotypes, sectarianism, and schisms when accepting ethnic denominational identities- inverting Pentecost by reading in multiple languages unrecognized by listeners and offering separate worship services according to musical preference."

"Ultimately, our aim is to draw attention to the biblical narrative from which comes to the strength for the long road of reconciliation. ~ Joy Moore
African America quotes by Joy Moore
For many years, I believed racism in America was dead and that opportunity existed for all. My beliefs were shaken when the Rodney King officers were acquitted. ~ John Hope Bryant
African America quotes by John Hope Bryant
Of events had lately come to the English Crown and People, from a congress of British subjects in America: which, strange to relate, have proved more important to the human race than any communications yet received through any of the chickens of the ~ Charles Dickens
African America quotes by Charles Dickens
The Superfund legislation set up a system of insurance premiums collected from the chemical industry to clean up toxic wastes. This new program may prove to be as far-reaching and important as any accomplishment of my administration. The reduction of the threat to America's health and safety from thousands of toxic-waste sites will continue to be an urgent but bitterly fought issue-another example for the conflict between the public welfare and the profits of a few private despoilers of our nation's environment. ~ Jimmy Carter
African America quotes by Jimmy Carter
The fetters of tyranny were not stricken from America for the sake of Americans alone. ~ Orson F. Whitney
African America quotes by Orson F. Whitney
One of the biggest things I understood in a program like that was that it allowed more young African American scholars to do field research in the Caribbean and in Africa than had ever happened before in the history of the country and since. ~ Bernice Johnson Reagon
African America quotes by Bernice Johnson Reagon
America needed recovery, not revenge. The hate had to be drained and the healing begun. ~ Gerald R. Ford
African America quotes by Gerald R. Ford
Life is going to give you just what you put in it. Put your whole heart in everything you do, and pray, then you can wait. ~ Maya Angelou
African America quotes by Maya Angelou
Chicago is great! It's like the heart of America. It's the center and it's a beautiful city. ~ Michael Sucsy
African America quotes by Michael Sucsy
'Rugged individualism' has meant all the 'individualism' for the masters, while the people are regimented into a slave caste to serve a handful of self-seeking 'supermen.' America is perhaps the best representative of this kind of individualism, in whose name political tyranny and social oppression are defended and held up as virtues; while every aspiration and attempt of man to gain freedom and social opportunity to live is denounced as 'un-American' and evil in the name of that same individuality. ~ Emma Goldman
African America quotes by Emma Goldman
For far too long, America has been without a comprehensive energy plan, and today consumers are paying the price - literally - at the pump and in their heating bills. ~ Chris Chocola
African America quotes by Chris Chocola
In America, people of a certain age ask, 'Where were you when Kennedy was shot?' In my house you were more likely to be asked, 'Where were you when you first read 'The Catcher In The Rye?' ~ Marisha Pessl
African America quotes by Marisha Pessl
Henceforth, the United States may have to determine how to cope with regional coalitions that seek to push America out of Eurasia, thereby threatening America's status as a global power. ~ Zbigniew Brzezinski
African America quotes by Zbigniew Brzezinski
I rememeber one time we were getting ready to go to South America and everything was packed up and in the car ready to go and I hid and I was crying because I really did not want to go, I wanted to play. I did not want to go. ~ Michael Jackson
African America quotes by Michael Jackson
You can't reach America's youth with off the mark radio ads or insulting television commercials ~ Steve Rifkind
African America quotes by Steve Rifkind

My non American viewers. Who understand that the world does not consist solely of a single nation sailing across an infinite sea of migrant workers. Will no doubt have heard that the waters surrounding Brisbane got tired of waiting for people to hit the beach and decided to bring the party to us. ~ Yahtzee Croshaw
African America quotes by Yahtzee Croshaw

African America quotes by W.E.B. Du Bois
Universities are the most anti-Israel mainstream institutions in America. And Westerns journalists nearly always use militant or gunman to describe Islamist terrorists. For Reuters, BBC, the Associated Press, CNN, and nearly all newspapers, it violates moral neutrality to label even a man attempting to smash a bomb-laden car into a nightclub a terrorist. ~ Dennis Prager
African America quotes by Dennis Prager
And sometimes people don't realize that 90 percent of the persistent poverty counties are located in rural America. ~ Tom Vilsack
African America quotes by Tom Vilsack
I like going there for golf. America is one vast golf course today. ~ King Edward VIII
African America quotes by King Edward VIII
The North American situation, while different from the Brazilian one, reflects a similar complexity and ambiguity in the relationship between race and ethnicity. Whereas Brazilians have a great number of terms used to designate people of varying pigmentation, the 'one-drop principle' prevalent in the USA entails that people are either black or white, and that 'a single drop of black blood' (sic) contaminates an otherwise pale person and makes him or her black. Conversely, ethnic identity in the USA is, as mentioned above, not necessarily correlated with 'race'. At the same time, African- American identities are associated ~ Thomas Hylland Eriksen
African America quotes by Thomas Hylland Eriksen
The main reason I did 'Captain America' was because I wanted to get out of my own head and stop taking my work so seriously. ~ Hayley Atwell
African America quotes by Hayley Atwell
