Animals give me more pleasure through the viewfinder of a camera than they ever did in the crosshairs of a gunsight. ~ James Stewart
Abused Animals quotes by James Stewart
For animals that are overworked, underfed, and cruelly treated; for all wistful creatures in captivity that beat their wings against bars; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to death ... and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. ~ Albert Schweitzer
Abused Animals quotes by Albert Schweitzer
Donkeys are the most misunderstood and abused animals around the world. ~ Bonnie Jo Campbell
Abused Animals quotes by Bonnie Jo Campbell
Cruelty is one fashion statement we can all do without. ~ Rue McClanahan
Abused Animals quotes by Rue McClanahan
To meditate for world peace, to pray for a better world, and to work for social justice and environmental protection while continuing to purchase the flesh, milk, and eggs of horribly abused animals exposes a disconnect that is so fundamental that it renders our efforts absurd, hypocritical, and doomed to certain failure. ~ Will Tuttle
Abused Animals quotes by Will Tuttle
Those who nod sagely and quote the tragedy of the commons in relation to environmental problems from pollution of the atmosphere to poaching of national parks tend to forget that Garrett Hardin revised his conclusions many times over thirty years. He recognized, most importantly, that anarchy did not prevail on the common pastures of midieval England in the way he had described [in his 1968 essay in 'Science']. The commoners--usually a limited number of people with defined rights in law--organized themselves to ensure it did not. The pastures were protected from ruin by the tradition of 'stinting,' which limited each herdsman to a fixed number of animals. 'A managed commons, though it may have other defects, is not automatically subject to the tragic fate of the unmanaged commons,' wrote Hardin, though he was still clearly unhappy with commoning arrangements. As with all forms of socialism, of which he regarded commoning as an early kind, Hardin said the flaw in the system lay in the quality of the management. The problem was alays how to prevent the managers from furthering their own interests. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Who guards the guardians?

Hardin observed, crucially, that a successful managed common depended on limiting the numbers of commoners, limiting access, and having penalties that deterred.

None of Hardin's requirements for a successfully managed common is fulfilled by high-seas fishery regimes ~ Charles Clover
Abused Animals quotes by Charles Clover
Animals see the unobstructed world with their whole eyes. But our eyes, turned back upon themselves, encircle and seek to snare the world, setting traps for freedom. ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
Abused Animals quotes by Rainer Maria Rilke
When the logs in the fireplace crackle merrily, the corpse of a beech or oak is going up in flames. The paper in the book you are holding in your hands right now is made from the shavings of spruce, and birches were expressly felled (that is to say, killed) for this purpose. Does that sound over the top? I don't think so. For if we keep in mind all we have learned in the previous chapters, parallels can definitely be drawn to pigs and pork. Not to put too fine a point on it, we use living things killed for our purposes. Does that make our behavior reprehensible? Not necessarily. After all, we are also part of Nature, and we are made in such a way that we can survive only with the help of organic substances from other species. We share this necessity with all other animals. The real question is whether we help ourselves only to what we need from the forest ecosystem, and-analogous to our treatment of animals-whether we spare the trees unnecessary suffering when we do this.

That means it is okay to use wood as long as trees are allowed to live in a way that is appropriate to their species. And that means that they should be allowed to fulfill their social needs, to grow in a true forest environment on undisturbed ground, and to pass their knowledge on to the next generation. And at least some of them should be allowed to grow old with dignity and finally die a natural death. ~ Peter Wohlleben
Abused Animals quotes by Peter Wohlleben
She wanted to walk until her body and mind were exhausted. Her snug house felt like a distant goal, a place she had to achieve through enormous physical effort. ~ Nicci French
Abused Animals quotes by Nicci French
Humans can be fairly ridiculous animals. ~ Barbara Kingsolver
Abused Animals quotes by Barbara Kingsolver
Of all the animals on earth, none is so brutish as man when he seeks the delirium of coition. ~ Edward Dahlberg
Abused Animals quotes by Edward Dahlberg
It is an amiable part of human nature, that we should love our animals; it is even better to love them to the point of folly, than not to love them at all. ~ Stevie Smith
Abused Animals quotes by Stevie Smith
I have such a passion because I adore animals so much. ~ Lea Michele
Abused Animals quotes by Lea Michele
...[A]s you read opinions and history in school about 2004... I want you to know... that going to this war was right. No matter what you hear 20 years from now by elite media and historians, things get distorted... Just like Vietnam, I fear OIF (Operation Iraqi Freedom) will be abused in the same way. Just as you hear more about American soldiers in Vietnam raping women and children and shooting unarmed men, today the media is focused about this detainee debacle for two weeks solid, in contrast to American Soldiers being dragged in the streets and dismembered, which was covered for less than 72 hours. I am part of the Special Operations Forces elite... We are harder than anyone at these detention centers and let me tell you, we treat these guys with the utmost professionalism. We do not hit them, we don't humiliate them or cause them any bodily harm for the purpose of entertainment. As a Christian, one assumes great compassion... This is WAR and treated very seriously. People are being killed and it is our job to get information... The humanity in me wants me to warm them, tell them their family is okay, feed them, and even embrace them in a loving way... Most, even in my stature, feel the same way. This is the American Soldier. ~ Eric Blehm
Abused Animals quotes by Eric Blehm
To horses, everyday is a new day to survive. It's a natural instinct. They don't think of the past or the future, only the present. So in terms of trying to teach your horse or build a special bond, patience is the key to every stall's door. ~ Sheikha Hissa Hamdan Al Maktoum
Abused Animals quotes by Sheikha Hissa Hamdan Al Maktoum
It is painful to witness the death of the smallest of God's created beings, much more, one in which life is so vigorously maintained as the Whale! And when I saw this, the largest and most terrible of all created animals bleeding, quivering, dying a victim to the cunning of man, my feelings were indeed peculiar! ~ Nathaniel Philbrick
Abused Animals quotes by Nathaniel Philbrick
Many of us spend long minutes in the aisle of the drugstore mulling over what toothpaste to buy. Yet most of us don't spend any time at all thinking about what species of animal we eat and why. Our choices as consumers drive an industry that kills ten billion* animals per year in the United States alone. If we choose to support this industry and the best reason we can come up with is because it's the way things are, clearly something is amiss. ~ Melanie Joy
Abused Animals quotes by Melanie Joy
We imagine people as animals or gods. -But she was just a person, a girl. ~ John Green
Abused Animals quotes by John Green
It's commonly said that if slaughterhouses had clear glass walls, nobody would eat meat. I think people go out of their way to remain ignorant about how factory farm animals are treated. ~ Steve-O
Abused Animals quotes by Steve-O
Animals are our inferior brothers and sisters. They are not meant to be eaten, but must be treated with love. ~ Dharma Mittra
Abused Animals quotes by Dharma Mittra
Our inventions have long been ahead of us in terms of efficiency and sanity, productivity and predictability. Oh, how we've wished we could be manmade, too. What has been keeping us back, keeping us messy? The animal impediment, within and without. Eliminating these impediments, we will surely be catching up with our machines, resembling them more and more impeccably. ~ Amy Leach
Abused Animals quotes by Amy Leach
From the first day I met his daughter, all I could think about was snuffling up under that sweet dimity like some bad old bear, just crawling up into that honeycomb, nose twitching, and never come out of there till early spring. Think that's disgusting? Dammit, I do, too, but that's the way male animals are made. Those peculiar delights were created to entrap us, and anybody who disapproves can take it up with God.

In their wondrous capacity of knowing the Lord's mind, churchly folks will tell you that He would purely hate to hear such dirty talk. My idea is, He wouldn't mind it half so much as they would have us think, because even according to their own queer creed, we are God's handiwork, created in His image, lust, piss, shit, and all. Without that magnificent Almighty lust that we mere mortals dare to call a sin, there wouldn't be any more mortals, and God's grand design for the human race, if He exists and if He ever had one, would turn to dust, and dust unto dust, forever and amen. Other creatures would step up and take over, realizing that man was too weak and foolish to properly reproduce himself. I nominate hogs to inherit the Earth, because hogs love to eat any old damned thing God sets in front of them, and they're ever so grateful for God's green earth even when it's all rain and mud, and they just plain adore to feed and fuck and frolic and fulfill God's holy plan. For all we know, it's hogs which are created in God's image, who's to say? ~ Peter Matthiessen
Abused Animals quotes by Peter Matthiessen
In the mass of people, vegetative and animal functions dominate. Their energy of intelligence is so feeble and inconstant that it is constantly overpowered by bodily appetite and passion.Such persons are not truly ends in themselves, for only reason constitutes a final end. Like plants, animals and physical tools, they are means, appliances, for the attaining of ends beyond themselves, although unlike them they have enough intelligence to exercise a certain discretion in the execution of the tasks committed to them. Thus by nature, and not merely by social convention, there are those who are slaves - that is, means for the ends of others. ~ John Dewey
Abused Animals quotes by John Dewey
My animals are a really important part of my life. ~ Lisa Scottoline
Abused Animals quotes by Lisa Scottoline
Any object, whether animate or inanimate, will have a size. Airplanes, boats, or musical string instruments vary in size just like animals and plants, and in all cases, their size and their material construction are totally different matters even though they affect one another. ~ John Tyler Bonner
Abused Animals quotes by John Tyler Bonner
We are all here on this planet, as it were, as tourists. None of us can live here forever. The longest we might live is a hundred years. So while we are here we should try to have a good heart and to make something positive and useful of our lives. Whether we live just a few years or a whole century, it would be truly regrettable and sad if we were to spend that time aggravating the problems that afflict other people, animals, and the environment. The most important things is to be a good human being. ~ Dalai Lama
Abused Animals quotes by Dalai Lama
Emile Saint-Blague had been a lively, versatile painter in his youth, but he had abused his energy by painting too many pictures; so that in what might have been the ripe period of his art he had nothing left but ideas. A man who has nothing left but ideas may be of great service to his friends, but he is of no use at all to himself. Emile was certainly an inspiration to his friends. ~ Laura Riding
Abused Animals quotes by Laura Riding
Undressing her was an act of recklessness, a kind of vandalism, like releasing a zoo full of animals, or blowing up a dam. ~ Michael Chabon
Abused Animals quotes by Michael Chabon
The immediate issue here is whether the Pooh animals realise they constitute a de facto nudist colony. ~ Frederick C. Crews
Abused Animals quotes by Frederick C. Crews
The only consistency in the way humans think about animals is inconsistency. ~ Hal Herzog
Abused Animals quotes by Hal Herzog
A good breeder or experienced rescue agency wants you to prove that you'll be a capable caretaker. The interrogation and screening can be annoying, but it's also a sign that you're on the right track. A breeder ought to know if you work long hours away from home, have a fenced yard, have kids or other animals, or if you have access to parks. ~ Jon Katz
Abused Animals quotes by Jon Katz
Of women, the most we can say, not being Frenchmen, is that they are burrowing animals. ~ Lawrence Durrell
Abused Animals quotes by Lawrence Durrell
One does not have to be Witted to know the companionship of a beast, and to know that the friendship of an animal is every bit as rich and complicated as that of a man or woman. ~ Robin Hobb
Abused Animals quotes by Robin Hobb
it was a chicken-and-egg conundrum: were they animals because they were in jail . . . or were they in jail because they were animals? ~ Jodi Picoult
Abused Animals quotes by Jodi Picoult
But Talin was scared of him. She had told him that to his face, and the sharp knife of it was still buried in his heart. The man wasn't sure he wanted to chance another rejection. Keeping the animal's instincts in check, he finally stepped out of the shadows. "Do you want to be held, Talin?" Her damp eyes widened at the blunt question, then she nodded in a little jerking motion. Something in him quieted, waiting. "Then come here." A pause during which the entire forest seemed to freeze, the night creatures aware of the leopard's tense watchfulness.

"Oh, God, Clay." Suddenly her arms were wrapped around his back, her cheek pressed against the white cotton of his T-shirt.

Hardly daring to breathe, he closed his own arms around her feminine warmth, blindingly aware of every inch of her pressed into him, every spot of wetness soaking through his T-shirt. She was so small, so damn soft, her humanity apparent in the delicacy of her skin, the lightness of her bones. The Psy might be fragile in comparison to changelings, but they had powers of the mind to compensate. Humans had the same fragility but none of the psychic abilities. A wave of protectiveness washed over him. "Shh, Tally." He used the nickname because, at this moment, he knew her. She had always had a heart too big for her body, a heart that felt such pain for others while ignoring its own. "I'll find your lost one."

She shook her head against him. "It's too late. Three bodies already. ~ Nalini Singh
Abused Animals quotes by Nalini Singh
On the day of the hunt I came to know in the slick center of my bones this one thing: all animals kill to survive, and we are animals. ~ Barbara Kingsolver
Abused Animals quotes by Barbara Kingsolver
I had lived my entire life up until I began working at Westwind relatively corpse-free. Now I had access to scores of them - stacked in the crematory freezer. They forced me to face my own death and the deaths of those I loved. No matter how much technology may become our master, it takes only a human corpse to toss the anchor off that boat and pull us back down to the firm knowledge that we are glorified animals that eat and shit and are doomed to die. We are all just future corpses. ~ Caitlin Doughty
Abused Animals quotes by Caitlin Doughty
For actors in Hollywood, it's very straightforward. We're well-paid animals in a zoo. ~ Robin Wright
Abused Animals quotes by Robin Wright
People liked to eat veal until they saw pictures of these darling little animals with brown eyes. Veal calves been raised the same way for centuries. ~ Julia Child
Abused Animals quotes by Julia Child
The one thing I find the least romantic is taking a horse and carriage ride. I can't express enough how unhappy these horses are and how much pain and suffering they go through each day. Please do not ride [in horse-drawn carriages]. Take a beautiful walk together with your loved ones instead of bringing more pain to these beautiful animals. ~ Lea Michele
Abused Animals quotes by Lea Michele
The prospect of a world that contains neither humans nor Z's is not so terrifying. Nature will take its world back. Animals will frolic and fight. There will be no lord of the manor, which is not such a bad thing, because it seems to me that people have done a pretty poor job of guiding the biosphere for the last few thousand years. ~ John Green
Abused Animals quotes by John Green
My father rebelled ferociously against his conservative upbringing where his father physically abused him. ~ Anthony Kiedis
Abused Animals quotes by Anthony Kiedis
Thomas argued that if these strange animals were truly extinct, it implied poor planning on God's part, threatening the ideal of God's perfection, therefore, such creatures must still be alive in remote places on earth. I argued that even God should be allowed to change his mind. Why should God's perfection be based on having an unchanging ~ Sue Monk Kidd
Abused Animals quotes by Sue Monk Kidd
It's important to talk about it. You raise awareness. But you can also prevent it (child abuse) by not letting it be a secret. ~ Chris Witty
Abused Animals quotes by Chris Witty
A large animal needs a large area. If you protect that area, you're also protecting thousands of other plants and animals. You're saving all these species that future generations will want - you're saving the world for your children and your children's children ... The destruction of species is final. If you lose a species, you lose the genes, you lose all the potential drugs and potential foods that could be useful to the next generations. The ecosystems will not function as they have. ~ George Schaller
