Consider a small child sitting on his mother's lap while she reads him a picture book. The picture book opens to a width that effectively places the child at the center of a closed circle - that of mother's body, arms, and the picture book ... That circle, so private and intimate, is a place apart form the demands and stresses of daily life, a sanctuary in and from which the child can explore the many worlds offered in picture books. Despite all of our society's technological advances, it still just takes one child, one book, and one reader, to create this unique space, to work this everyday magic. ~ Martha V. Parravano
A Place Apart quotes by Martha V. Parravano
Cows in India occupy the same position in society as women did in England before they got the vote. Woman was revered but not encouraged. Her life was one long obstacle race owing to the anxiety of man to put pedestals at her feet. While she was falling over the pedestals she was soothingly told that she must occupy a Place Apart - and indeed, so far Apart did her place prove to be that it was practically out of earshot. The cow in India finds her position equally lofty and tiresome. You practically never see a happy cow in India. ~ Stella Benson
A Place Apart quotes by Stella Benson
21. Revelation
WE make ourselves a place apart
Behind light words that tease and flout,
But oh, the agitated heart
Till someone find us really out.
'Tis pity if the case require
(Or so we say) that in the end
We speak the literal to inspire
The understanding of a friend.
But so with all, from babes that play
At hide-and-seek to God afar,
So all who hide too well away
Must speak and tell us where they are ~ Robert Frost
A Place Apart quotes by Robert Frost
I never yet feared those men who set a place apart in the middle of their cities where they gather to cheat one another and swear oaths which they break. ~ Herodotus
A Place Apart quotes by Herodotus
As for New York City, it is a place apart. There is not its match in any other country in the world. ~ Pearl S. Buck
A Place Apart quotes by Pearl S. Buck
Our Southside is a place apart: each piece of our living is a protest. ~ Lorraine Hansberry
A Place Apart quotes by Lorraine Hansberry
Once you begin reviewing judgment calls, which in basketball there are many, you put yourself on a very slippery slope in terms of what could be reviewed, and ultimately the number of reviews that could take place that would make it unwieldy. ~ Stu Jackson
A Place Apart quotes by Stu Jackson
People are shaped by their emotions. That which profoundly affects them has a place in their hearts. ~ Saim .A. Cheeda
A Place Apart quotes by Saim .A. Cheeda
I came to a terrifying place in my life where I knew I was hopeless. My only hope was to change ... or die. ~ Roy Nelson
A Place Apart quotes by Roy Nelson
My job is to make something happen in a space barely larger than the span of your hand, behind your eyes, distilled out of all that I have carried, from friends, from teachers, people met on planes, people I have only seen in my mind, every favorite book, until it meets and distills from you, the reader, something out of the everything it finds in you. All of this meets along the edge of a sentence like this one, as if the sentence is a fence, with you on one side and me on the other. When the writing works best, I feel like I could poke one of these words out of place and find the writer's eye there, looking through to me. ~ Alexander Chee
A Place Apart quotes by Alexander Chee
You think of me that way because you look at me and at what I do through the lens of your mundane understanding of the world. Mundane humans create distinctions between themselves, distinctions that seem ridiculous to any Shadowhunter. Their distinctions are based on race, religion, nation identity, any of a dozen more irrelevant markers, To mundanes they seem logical, for though mundanes connote see, understand, or acknowledge the demon worlds, still somewhere found buried in their ancient memories, they know that there are those that walk this earth and are other. That do not belong, that mean only harm and destruction. Since the demon threat is invisible to mundanes, they must assign the threat to others of their own kind. They place the face of their enemy onto the face of their neighbor, and thus are generations of misery assured. ~ Cassandra Clare
A Place Apart quotes by Cassandra Clare
To be happily married, as I've been fortunate enough to be, is to be a partner in a conversation that can last a full adult life. To have a true friend is to be able to test your hypotheses against someone who's receptive, but who won't give ground forever, and then let your friend try his wares out on you. At its best, friendly conversation is about giving up all claims to property and priority and engaging in collaboration--so that, at least for the two of you, something like an improvised musical composition in two parts is taking place. You do some rhythm to his lead; he lays down a bass line when you want to run the thing out into space. You both wind up saying things and thinking things that, alone, you never could have. This kind of hybrid mixing, this collaborative creation, is greatly to be treasured: it's one of the best parts of life. ~ Mark Edmundson
A Place Apart quotes by Mark Edmundson
The world is a beautiful place,
you just don't see it all the time. ~ Phil Mitchell
A Place Apart quotes by Phil Mitchell
If I'm royalty, then where's my crown? Because I know of a small dark place I'd like to shove it right now. ~ Mara Valderran
A Place Apart quotes by Mara Valderran
...[She] was not nearly so intrusive. If she happened to observe the comings and goings of her friends out of the corner of her eye (which she could hardly fail to do, given the nature of her favorite sitting-place) and chanced to be able to remember when she had seen them and where they had been going, it was simply a tribute to her keen powers of observation and recall. Conscious spying was beneath her altogether. ~ Tom Holt
A Place Apart quotes by Tom Holt
That constant pacing to and fro, that never-ending restlessness, that incessant tread of feet wearing the rough stones smooth and glossy - is it not a wonder how the dwellers in narrows ways can bear to hear it! Think of a sick man in such a place as Saint Martin's Court, listening to the footsteps, and in the midst of pain and weariness obliged, despite himself (as though it were a task he must perform) to detect the child's step from the man's, the slipshod beggar from the booted exquisite, the lounging from the busy, the dull heel of the sauntering outcast from the quick tread of an expectant pleasure-seeker - think of the hum and noise always being present to his sense, and of the stream of life that will not stop, pouring on, on, on, through all his restless dreams, as if he were condemned to lie, dead but conscious, in a noisy churchyard, and had no hope of rest for centuries to come. ~ Charles Dickens
A Place Apart quotes by Charles Dickens
To run with the wolf was to run in the shadows, the dark ray of life, survival and instinct. A fierceness that was both proud and lonely, a tearing, a howling, a hunger and thirst. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst. A strength that would die fighting, kicking, screaming, that wouldn't stop until the last breath had been wrung from its body. The will to take one's place in the world. To say 'I am here.' To say 'I am. ~ O.R. Melling
A Place Apart quotes by O.R. Melling
... no place is more filled with imagined voices than a library. ~ Wayne C. Booth
A Place Apart quotes by Wayne C. Booth
I can't think why men would believe that it is a better world where something beautiful is destroyed and something broken left in its place. ~ Philippa Gregory
A Place Apart quotes by Philippa Gregory
I've been falsely accused of drawing too much from real life. But I am a petty thief - I take little things. And, I mean, I can hardly write 10 words before I start to make things up. I start to invent, because that's what I want to do. I'm running away to an invented place. ~ Lorrie Moore
A Place Apart quotes by Lorrie Moore
You're going to castrate them if they give me a sideways glance?"
He looked at the ground. "I'm not bringing you to the safest place and you're beautiful, so I needed to warn them."
"I'm beautiful?" I repeated trying not to smile.
"Don't let it go to your head, darling." He said holding his hand out for me.
"You're not too bad yourself."
"I know. I saw the way you stared at me when I took my shirt off." Hunter said. ~ Cassandra Giovanni
A Place Apart quotes by Cassandra Giovanni
When the time comes, everybody's got to end up where they belong. Only me, I didn't have a place to call my own. It's like musical chairs. ~ Haruki Murakami
A Place Apart quotes by Haruki Murakami
I have to kiss her again; I start with her lips. When I taste her on my tongue, I want more. I need more. Tugging on her bottom lip with mine elicits a soft groan of pleasure from her. I live in the sound of it.
When our bodies fit together, like pieces falling into place, I'm nearly undone by it and by her eyes. They narrow and her forehead leans forward to rest against mine. Through her eyes, I can almost see inside her soul. That's where I long to be: centered near her soul, wedged between it and her heart. ~ Reed's POV ~ Amy A. Bartol
A Place Apart quotes by Amy A. Bartol
Istanbul is a vast place. There are very conservative neighbourhoods, there are places that are upper class, Westernised, consuming Western culture. ~ Orhan Pamuk
A Place Apart quotes by Orhan Pamuk
It is always a great pleasure, and surprise, when you happen on just the perfect place in which to plant some special treasure. ~ Margery Fish
A Place Apart quotes by Margery Fish
I wanted you to have a place where you felt safe enough to cry if I could not be with you. ~ Erin Morgenstern
A Place Apart quotes by Erin Morgenstern
Mystery fiction is, after all, a substitute for tranquilizers, strong drink, and bad, if diverting, companions. One slips into bed ... onto the train ... into the chair in the sickroom ... and is suddenly transported to a place where light fights dark and wins. When the story's over, one is left without a hangover, without remorse. Can any other opiate make that claim? ~ Mary Cantwell
A Place Apart quotes by Mary Cantwell
A poem is no place for an idea. ~ E.W. Howe
A Place Apart quotes by E.W. Howe
The heartland lies where the heart longs to be. Sometimes it takes a lifetime to find the true place to plant it. ~ Vera Nazarian
A Place Apart quotes by Vera Nazarian
That was what I'd always loved about reading, what had driven me to write in the first place. That feeling that a new world was being spun like a spiderweb around you and you couldn't move until the whole thing had revealed itself to you. ~ Emily Henry
A Place Apart quotes by Emily Henry
Our fellow-citizens, as they now realized, had never thought that our little town might be a place particularly chosen as one where rats die in the sun and concierges perish from peculiar illnesses. ~ Albert Camus
A Place Apart quotes by Albert Camus
Rosasharn, you're jest one person, an' they's a lot of other folks. You git to your proper place. I knowed people built theirself up with sin till they figgered they was big mean shucks in the sight a the Lord.
But, Ma
No. Jes' shut up an' git to work. You ain't big enough or mean enough to worry God much. An' I'm gonna give you the back a my han' if you don' stop this pickin' at yourself. ~ John Steinbeck
A Place Apart quotes by John Steinbeck
I've appeared in those kind of films and have great fun doing it, and I'm always up for a challenge. I think with things like Mission: Impossible and Star Trek, those things are such an ensemble, it's not like I'm Ethan Hunt. I'm Benji. I'm the guy that does the computer business. I know my place. ~ Simon Pegg
A Place Apart quotes by Simon Pegg
Nature, like Miamonides said, is mainly a good place to throw beer cans on Sunday afternoons. ~ Edward Abbey
A Place Apart quotes by Edward Abbey
If it's true there's a beginning to the universe, as modern cosmologists now agree, then this implies a cause that transcends the universe. If the laws of physics are fine-tuned to permit life, as contemporary physicists are discovering, then perhaps there's a designer who fine-tuned them. If there's information in the cell, as molecular biology shows, then this suggests intelligent design. To get life going in the first place would have required biological information; the implications point beyond the material realm to a prior intelligent cause. -Stephen C Meyer, PHD ~ Lee Strobel
A Place Apart quotes by Lee Strobel
The whole island was exactly what a kid growing up in some trailer park
say some dump like Tecumseh Lake, Georgia
would dream about. This kid would turn out all the lights in the trailer while her mom was at work. She'd lie down flat on her back, on the matted-down orange shag carpet in the living room. The carpet smelling like somebody stepped in a dog pile. The orange melted black in spots from cigarette burns. The ceiling was water-stained. she'd fold her arms across her chest, and she could picture life in this kind of place. It would be that time
late at night
when your ears reach out for any sound. When you can see more with your eyes closed than open. The fish skeleton. From the first time she held a crayon, that's what she'd draw. ~ Chuck Palahniuk
A Place Apart quotes by Chuck Palahniuk
Keefe smeared his blood across the smooth panel. But a metallic click echoed through the dark instead. A lock clicking into place. Lady Gisela stepped back, shaking her hair out of her eyes. "Finally done." The ~ Shannon Messenger
A Place Apart quotes by Shannon Messenger
On trial were two men, one in a plaid shirt, and the other with a long, ZZ Top-style beard. They looked intimated by the crowd that had turned out, even though Plaid Shirt stood six foot four. He was the main perpetrator, charged with animal cruelty. He had brought his young son along during the bear killing for which he was on trial.
The main reason the state managed to bring charges is that the hunters had made a videotape of their gruesome acts. The state trooper who confiscated the video couldn't even testify at the time of the trial, he was so emotionally overcome.
Then they showed the video in court, and I understood why. ZZ Top and Plaid Shirt cornered the bear cub. In order to preserve the integrity of the pelt, they attempted to kill the cub by stabbing it in the eyes.
It was absolutely gut-wrenching to watch. The bear struggled for its life, but Plaid Shirt kept thrusting his knife, moving back as the animal twisted frantically away, then moving forward to stab again. The bear cub screamed, and it sounded eerily as though the bear was actually crying "Mama," over and over. Plaid Shirt and ZZ Top sat unfazed in court. The bear screamed, "Mama, mama, mama." From my place in the gallery, I watched as a towering man in a police uniform burst into tears and walked out of the courtroom. At the end of the video, Plaid Shirt brought his nine-year-old son over to stand triumphantly next to the dead bear cub.
"Clearly, you deserve jail," the judge told Pla ~ Terri Irwin
A Place Apart quotes by Terri Irwin
Raylene bit her bottom lip, but she couldn't break the connection, not that she wanted to. "Do you really have to keep addressing me as Miss Capri, even out here?"
He nodded, but didn't hesitate to add, "The only place I can call you by your first name is in the privacy of a cabin."
Raylene's eyes widened considerably, as she considered what her heart and mind collided to reply. With a nervous swallow, her voice became little. "Then I think we should proceed to your cabin, First Officer John Drake. ~ Derek Hart
A Place Apart quotes by Derek Hart
His face. Fenton was never one to like a slow day. The look was enough to tell Barnaby that something big had just come down. "Hutch?" "Hmmm?" Fenton went on, breathlessly. "The Broadbent place was robbed. I got one of the sons on the phone now." Hutch Barnaby didn't move a muscle. "Robbed of what?" "Everything." Fenton's black eyes glittered with relish. Barnaby sipped his coffee, sipped again, and then lowered his chair to the floor with a small clunk. Damn. As Barnaby and Fenton drove out the Old Santa Fe Trail, Fenton talked about the robbery. The collection, he'd heard, was worth half a billion. If the truth were anything close to that, Fenton said, it would be front-page-New-York-Times. He, Fenton, on the front page of the Times. Can you imagine ~ Douglas Preston
A Place Apart quotes by Douglas Preston
I can explain myself: If you want to be safe, walk in the middle of the street. I'm not joking. You've been told to look both ways before crossing the street, and the sidewalk is your friend, right? Wrong. I've spent years walking sidewalks at night. I've looked around me when it was dark, when there were men following me, creeping out of alleyways, attempting to goad me into speaking to them and shouting obscenities at me when I wouldn't, and I suddenly realised that the only place left to go was the middle of street. But why would I risk it? Because the odds are in my favour. In the States, someone is killed in a car accident on average every 12.5 minutes, while someone is raped on average every 2.5 minutes. Even when factoring in that, one, I am generously including ALL car-related accidents and not just those involving accidents, and two, that the vast majorities of rapes still go unreported […] And, thus, this is now the way I live my life: out in the open, in the middle of everything, because the middle of the street is actually the safest place to walk. ~ Emilie Autumn
A Place Apart quotes by Emilie Autumn
I had gotten to a place where I truly believed everything I was called: 'not sexy,' 'not funny,' 'too intense,' desperate.' All those labels they gave me, I took them because there wasn't a trace of my true self left. ~ Naomi Watts
A Place Apart quotes by Naomi Watts
I bent down over my neighborhood, taking in the people there. At first, they'd just seemed arranged the same way they were everywhere else: in random formations, some in groups, some alone. Then, though, I saw the single figure at the back of my house, walking away from the back door. And another person, a girl, running through the side yard, where the hedge would have been, while someone else, with a badge and flashlight followed. There were three people under the basketball goal, one lying prone on the ground.

I took a breath, then moved in closer. Two people were seated on the curb between Dave's and my houses: a few inches away two more walked up the narrow alley to Luna Blu's back door. A couple stood in the driveway, facing each other. And in that empty building, the old hotel, a tiny set of cellar doors had been added, flung open, a figure standing before them. Whether they were about to go down, or just coming up, was unclear, and the cellar itself was a dark square. But I knew what was down below.

He'd put me everywhere. Every single place I'd been, with him or without, from the first time we'd met to the last conversation. It was all there, laid out as carefully, as real as the buildings and streets around it. I swallowed, hard, then reached forward, touching the girl running through the hedge. Not Liz Sweet. Not anyone, at that moment, not yet. But on her way to someone. To me. ~ Sarah Dessen
A Place Apart quotes by Sarah Dessen
Our silver van was like a magic carriage. Every time I got into it, it carried me to a place I'd never been before. At that moment, we were without a doubt the greatest travelers in the world. And I was the world's greatest traveling cat. ~ Hiro Arikawa
